The resource classification methodologies have always been a topic of research and debate. There are both traditional and Geostatistical methods used in practice. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for resource classification. Therefore, some practitioners have adapted the methodologies to suit the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they are comfortable with. Another reason for the existence of varying classification methodologies is the lack of an easy and established way to measure the confidence in the estimates. Therefore, their classification becomes a subject of debate. In this paper, a new approach is offered to classify the resources using a "Resource Classification Index." The approach using this index takes into account the local variation, the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance measures. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to demonstrate how this new index can be used to classify the resources. The results from this approach are compared to those from two popular classification methodologies.

Experiments were conducted on magnesium monocrystals in order to collect quantitative information on the mechanisms which limit the rate of basal slip. Using critical shear stress and creep data, activation energies for creep at low aid at high temperatures were derived. The activation energy at low temperatures is the same as that for jog formation and the activation energy at high temperatures agrees with that for climb. COTTRELL has suggested that at low temperatures, the expansion of dislocation loops under stresses near the yield strength is limited by the rate at____ which the expanding loops can cut the "forest" of dislocations passing through the glide planes.' On the basis of this mechanism, seeger2 has derived expressions for low-temperature creep and for the relation of flow stress of single crystals to temperature. Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

Solid Energy New Zealand operates the Stockton Opencast Coal Mine, a unique deposit consisting of high quality hard coking and thermal coals. Stockton's uniqueness includes high variability of the shipment specifications, strict quality constraints, minimal stockpiling capacity in the coal transport chain and the variability of coal quality both vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The process of resource proving and modelling results in a high level of understanding of the deposit to allow detailed planning to be undertaken. The use of computer aided mine planning tools is an important component of the mine planning at Stockton. Detailed planning is implemented in the field through selective mining practices and monitoring to minimise dilution and maximise recovery of the coal resource. The quality variability in the coal, the æjust in timeÆ approach of the coal transport chain and markedly varying quality specifications from shipment to shipment requires a large coal inventory and the mine to be driven by quality constraints rather than material movement capacities.

Prevent collisions between large mine-haulage trucks and smaller vehicles parked in areas not visible to the haulage-truck operator, Approach Two electronic systems were developed to detect the presence of vehicles in the blind areas of a parked haulage truck. The systems can warn haulage truck operators of presence of vehicles that are blocked from view. The systems do not apply for trucks in travel. How It Works The systems use electronic transmitting techniques-one system is based on low-frequency radio waves and the other on very-high-frequency radio waves. Each system requires that a signal transmitter be mounted on the smaller vehicle to be detected. Continuous signals from this transmitter are sensed by receiving antennas mounted on the right front and rear of the large haulage truck. Upon receiving a signal, the receiver energizes warning lights and a buzzer in the cab of the haulage truck, alerting the operator to a possible collision hazard. Detection distance is adjustable, depending upon the size of the haulage truck, but a minimum of 30 feet was the design goal.

A lyometallurgical process for extracting copper from an ore containing chrysocolla by leaching it with a kerosene solution containing LM 63 in the presence of small amounts of aqueous ammonia is described. The experimental results indicate that 70 to 75 percent of the copper can be extracted from the ore using an ammonia content that is about one-fourth the stoichiomeaic quantity required to leach copper in an aqueous leaching system. The rate of copper extraction was found to be a function of particle size, ammonia concentration and temperature. The large quantity of physically adsorbed water together with ammonia in the pores of chrysocolla provides a mechanism for the transport of copper to the external surface of the particles where it is complexed by the LM molecules and transferred into the organic phase. When size reduction accompanies leaching, the extraction process was found to proceed when only "trace" quantities of ammonia are present in the system. The kinetics of the extraction process appear to be controlled by a mixed (reaction and diffusion) mechanism.

Electrochemical investigations of the flotation of sulphide minerals are re- viewed. Flotation with thiol collectors is interpreted in terms of a "mixed poten- tial" model in which the process leading to hydrophobicity is the anodic oxidation of the collector at the mineral surface and this is driven by the cathodic reduc- tion of oxygen. Electrochemical studies have identified the products of anodic oxidation as chemisorbed collector, metal collector compounds, and dithiolates; the products formed in each situation depend on the collector used, the mineral under study, and the pretreatment of the mineral surface. Investigations on galena, pyrite, and chalcocite are discussed. Electrochemical and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been used to determine the products of surface oxi- dation of sulphide minerals in order to elucidate the mechanism of collectorless flotation. The mixed potential mechanism allows consideration to be made of the ways in which flotation of sulphides with thiols can be inhibited. Examples of depressant action are presented. The relevance of electrochemical investi- gations to practical flotation is Discussed.

Fluid inclusions have been studied since the mid-1800s. In 1858, the famous English geologist H. C. Sorby, stated that ". . . there is no necessary connection between the size of an object and the value of a fact, and that, though the objects [inclusions] ... are minute, the conclusions to be derived from the facts are great."' This statement philosophically emphasizes why fluid inclusions should be studied. Fluid inclusions supply the economic geologist with "hard" data on the chemical environment and mechanisms of transport for ore fluids. Such studies enable geologists to understand more about their complex nature. The information that can be obtained from fluid inclusions is as follows: 1) Fluid inclusion "filling temperatures" measured with the microscope heating stage, reflect the hotness of an ore fluid at the time of its entrapment and are one of the most accurate methods of geologic thermometry. 2) Ore fluid densities indicate the extent to which ground water becomes mixed with ore fluids. The paper outlines the development of"a process for removal of iron oxides from ilmenite, thereby upgrading the TiO2 content of Western Australian ilmenites, from 55 to approximately 90 per cent. In the first stage, the iron oxides are reduced with solid carbon (coal) to metallic iron. Experimental reduc- tions were carried out in crucibles,, a fluidised bed and a small pilot plant rotary kiln. The reduced'ilmenite is,then agitated in aerated water, in the presence of catalysts, so that the iron "rusts" away from the ilmenite'grains and the precipitated iron oxide is easily separable by decantation. The influence of variables on the rates. of reduction and oxidation are discussed, The oxidation rate was exam- ined for both - the' physical oxygen-transfer characteristics and electrochemically by reference to Peurbaix diagrams, which plot redox potential against solution 'PH, The upgraded ilmenite is expected to be an attractive material. for pigment -manufacture,, and the iron oxide has prospects of being a marketable by-product. A five-year effort by the ASTM subcommittee E10.14 on uranium resource evaluation has culminated in the approval of E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources (ASTM Standard E901-82, April 1983). The standard classification was prepared with participation of representatives from the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Interior's Geological Survey and Bureau Mines, utilities, and consultants. The classification a resource is based on level of knowledge and the economic producibility of the resource at a given time. Alphanumeric identifiers are used rather than words to avoid confusion with existing terms, definitions, and classifications. An example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that remain infixing the classification a given uranium resource include uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

Neodymium was electrowon into a Mg-Cd molten cathode at 650 °C from NdC1,-KC1 electrolyte. With the chloride system, neodymium was deposited into the molten alloy cathode until the neodymium concentration reached 20 wt pct. The alloy was then vacuum melted to remove the Mg and Cd. The current efficiency exceeded 80 pct under optimum conditions and the purity of the metal was 99.9 pct after vacuum melting. As an alternative approach, neodymium was electrowon at 1,030 °C from Nd,O, dissolved in a molten fluoride eleotrolyte. With the oxide-fluoride electrolyte, the metal was electrowon in a molten state with current efficiencies up to 60 pct. The purity of the metal was 99.8 pct with oxygen and carbon as major impurities. A number of problems were encountered including anode effect, low oxide solubility in the electrolyte, high neodymium metal solubility in the electrolyte, and reactivity of the metal with the cell materials. Approaches to improved cell, operation and prospects for commercial adoption of the electrolytic production of neodymium metal are discussed.

A wide-ranging series of experiments has been carried out on value minerals (sphalerite, smithsonite and hematite) and gangue minerals (quartz and calcite) to assess the properties of various commercially available vegetable and synthetic tannins as dispersants for these minerals in a finely ground state (<5 microns). Experiments to determine the dispersing power of each reagents on every mineral have been performed through sedimentation tests run first in water and afterwards in the presence of a collector having specific action on the mineral concerned. The tests have been extended to a wide range of dispersant concentrations, maintaining the pH and collector concentrations at the levels known to be the best for the flotation of the various minerals. By comparing the results obtained on each mineral, conclusions have been drawn on the possibility of using different classes of vegetable and synthetic tannins in the selective flotation of fine particles. These results have been related to the structure of the tanning compounds and to the surface properties of the minerals.

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

The nature of business in a free enterprise system is to maximise the return on an investment i.e. to maximise the wealth of the shareholders. This is normally achieved within constraints dictated by many agencies, one of which is the health and welfare of the employees. In the mining industry considerable effort has been expended in improvements in this field, however, the major problem still confronting the practicing ventilation or environmental engineer is the determination of what standards he should design for, which satisfy both the economic and health requirement s. Normally the basic health requirements are satisfied by the minimum standards defined in regulations and codes of practice. These are, however, based on an acceptance of a certain risk or lower production potential. A prime function of the ventilation engineer is therefore to financially justify and implement improvements to both standards and systems. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the basis and techniques of providing this financial justification. Changes in existing methods to achieve the same standards but at lower costs are also covered.

The coal lands that the Nemacolin mine is to develop embrace over 8400 acres; the tract is oblong and its eastern edge is along the Monon-gahela river. As shown in Fig. 1, the mine is divided into two parts (the North mine and the South mine) by a 150-ft. barrier, which however, is cut through at intervals by haulageways. Each part is fed from seven main entries—a loaded track, an empty, a manway, and four return air courses. The loaded tracks converge at the shaft bottom but the empty roads maintain their identity throughout their length. With three intakes and four returns on either side, there is ample room for expansion of air and every facility for ventilating is provided. The four south air courses converge into two, crossing the shaft bottom, and then into one at the south side of the air shaft. Sustainable development is a principle for the way we should act in the present. It ensures also options for the future to achieve a balance between social, economic and ecology development. The efficiency of raw material utilisation is being enhanced through technological developments, starting from extraction through all the following stages of the value creation chain. The use of domestically produced resources helps to assure the technological know-how. Additional indicators being collected and published by individual companies are questionable in countries with a tightly regulated legal framework such as in Germany, but make sense in developing and threshold countries. Sustainability in terms of efficient use of raw materials will manifest itself at the next stages of the value creation chain. Examples for efficiency improvement can be found in the steel, the power generation and agriculture industries. The approval procedures for German mining operations entail an internationally extremely strict assessment of the potential impact on the environment. All the mining activities include remediation and recultivation where the practise in Germany has become model character by international levels.

Better quality at lower cost is today&apos;s formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel&apos;s Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

WITH the acquisition of the Nichols Copper Company &apos; and the development of the large Copper Products manufacturing and selling organization, the Phelps Dodge Corporation had attained two of its important goals. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. The challenge to the zinc industry is shifting from maximum metal recoveries to the environmentally safe processing of the ore concentrates. The main source of solid residues from hydrometallurgical zinc processing is the iron content of the concentrates. Unfortunately iron precipitates from leach liquors contain various compounds which cause them to be considered as environmentally unsafe, unless they have been cleaned in subsequent process steps. This calls for separating the iron from hydrometallurgical processing as early as possible. For this purpose a process has been designed to eliminate the iron directly after neutral leaching the calcine. This is being done by direct smelting the neutral leach residue with a cyclone/top blowing unit. The zinc is recovered from the neutral leach residue as a metal oxide to be recycled to the zinc process. The iron is converted to a slag, which is resistant to atmospheric attack. Key data of the integrated hydro-/pyrometallurgical process are presented as derived from pilot plant tests by cyclone smelting and top blowing the slag.

An experimental study on interparticle breakage of three iron ores was carried out by compressive stressing of particle-bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing were five narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.2~3.2 mm respectively and a wide size fraction of 0/4.0 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 360 MPa. The results show that the energy absorption of the particle bed increases linearly with the pressure; the increase of the product fineness with the pressure declines as the pressure goes up; and the product size distributions resulting from interparticle breakage of different narrow size fractions have no self-similarity. Using data obtained from the piston-die compressive stressing test, the suitability of a previously-developed material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for these ores. It is shown that the particle-bed compression test conducted with piston-die device in lab-scale may provide a cost-effective way of studying and modelling size-reduction of ore materials by interparticle breakage.
