The Mount Olivet Road Drop Shaft (MOR-DS) support of excavation (SOE) is a circular unreinforced concrete shaft with an inside diameter of a 30.5 ft (9.3 m) and depth of 120.5 ft (36.7 m), constructed using slurry wall methods. The SOE for the adjacent Mount Olivet Road Approach Channel (MOR-AC) and Mount Olivet Road Ventilation Vault (MOR-VV) near surface structures (NSS) consists of lean mix concrete walls and cement-bentonite walls, respectively, both constructed using slurry wall techniques and reinforced with embedded soldier piles. NSS SOE required multiple levels of preloaded internal bracing, with excavation depths of up to 75 ft (22.9 m). The original design construction sequence for the shaft and NSS SOE required that the MOR-DS be constructed in its entirety and backfilled to ground surface prior to excavation of the adjacent NSS SOE. After installation of the drop shaft and NSS SOE an accelerated construction sequence was implemented requiring the analysis of the excavation support systems to determine if the excavations could be open concurrently without adversely impacting the partially constructed permanent MOR-DS structure. The MOR-DS was analyzed using the finite element analysis (FEA) software, MIDAS GTS, to demonstrate that the unbalanced loads applied to the MOR-DS composite structure due to the revised sequence would not exceed the strength and serviceability requirements per ACI-350 or superseded by the more stringent project requirements. The results of the FEA were used to set limits for geotechnical instrumentation consisting of strain gauges located on the brace levels of the NSS SOE. A comparison of the SOE design hand calculations, FEA model results and instrumentation data is presented.

The detailed researches of a broad circle of problems connected to development of the electric pulse method destruction materials (EPD) of a various nature and area of use are executed. The electrical and power characteristics of process, physical fundamentals of selectivity of a breakdown and destruction are investigated, the device of electric pulse (EP) disaggregation and ?omminution of materials are developed, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated. Due to its technological advantages, the EPD could have a great potential in minerals mining and processing technologies. Low specific power and weight-and-size characteristics of EP installations based on the existing out-of-date electric equipment are at present the main reasons hindering the effective application of the method in mining and processing technologies. The main studies carried out in Russia in the field of electro technical equipment development for EP technology are presented. The pulse capacitors service life affects greatly the economic efficiency of the process because the capacitors cost accounts for a considerable, and in some cases, the most part of the operational costs. Determined and analyzed in the study are the ways which could significantly improve the specific characteristics of high voltage pulse generators (VPG), such as to use of high-frequency voltage transformation to develop a charger; to use pulse transformers (PT) with iron magnetic circuits made of materials characterized by high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as to use special ways which could produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for EP devices, and a further strategy of the EP technologies development and application has been suggested on this base. "INTRODUCTION Iron ore containing titanium was first used in blast furnaces over a century ago. It is well known that TiO2 is a slag-forming material that will increase the amount of slag produced by the usual gangue materials, silica and alumina. Increase in the volume of slag due to the presence of TiO2 and a lack of information concerning its effect on the properties of the slag have prevented the general use of titaniferous ore. Also rather com¬mon belief among furnace operators that the bottom of the furnace builds up when ores containing TiO2 are smelted has militated against the use of titaniferous ore. This building up of the hearth has been attributed to the formation of copper-colored crystals of titanium cyanonitride, which have been observed in the salamanders of blast furnaces. Until recently the availability of nontitaniferous iron ore has left little incentive to use ore containing titanium.The presence of vanadium in certain deposits of titaniferous magnetite in New York State has created new interest in problems connected with the use of titanium-bearing ore. It appears that most of the vanadium in this ore can be recovered in pig iron, which can be blown in a converter to produce a slag containing vanadium in amounts suitable for the production of ferrovanadium.The Titanium Division of the National Lead Co. recently erected a largo mill to treat ore from Sanford Hill, in Essex County, New York, about 50 miles west of Port Henry. The ore deposit was acquired from the MacIntyre Iron Co. and is often referred to as Sanford ore. It is one of the largest deposits of Iron-bearing material to be found east of the Lake Superior region and is being mined by open-pit methods."

The original bulk air cooling system at this particular mine made use of two water chilling refrigeration machines to produce peak cooling of approximately 12 MWR with a downcast air temperature of about 7°C; however, as the shaft is not used for transporting personnel, the opportunity existed to supply more cooling to the mine by lowering the downcast air temperature. An ice storage facility has been constructed and provides a range of opportunities in operating the system: colder air temperature sent to the shaft, enabled by using near-zero degree water produced by melting ice to cool the air; electricity time-of-use management, by shifting electricity usage out of peak tariff periods; and increased peak cooling capacity, by melting ice while chilling water. Ice is created in the storage facility at night while the ambient air temperature is low and then melted to produce cold water when required by the cooling process. An ice dam was constructed and serpentine stainless steel coils installed where the ice is produced; one of the refrigeration machines was converted to chill a glycol solution to subzero temperatures to create the ice on the coils; a plate heat exchanger was installed to allow the glycol chiller to act as a water chiller as well; and a third spray stage was added to the bulk air cooler to utilise the near-zero water. This paper describes the thermodynamic design, construction and performance assessment of the new system, which is unique, novel and represents the state-of-the-art of this type of cooling system and energy management.CITATION:Branch, A R, Wilson, R W and Pooe, T S, 2015. In 2011 the forecasted world demand for iron ore continues to grow, and during this time Australia is looked upon as a reliable supplier of high quality ore. The expansion of the current Australian mines is unlikely to meet the forecast demand. New mines are therefore being actively explored for and when discovered, are quickly being developed into mines in order to meet the world’s hunger for steel.The Solomon Project area is a large new iron ore discovery, located in the central Hamersley Ranges of the Pilbara province in Western Australia. The first Fortescue exploration drill holes commenced on the project in 2007 and to date three billion tonnes (Bt) of iron ore have been defi ned within the project area. Fortescue is fast-tracking the development of the ‘Solomon Stage 1’ project, with rail and mine construction commencing during 2011, and ore to be railed to Fortescue’s existing shipping operations at Port Hedland commencing in 2012. At a designed production rate of 60 Mt/a, the Solomon operation will be one of the biggest production centres of iron ore in the Pilbara.Deposit types include the three dominant mineralisation styles of the Pilbara province, being bedded iron deposits (BID), Channel iron deposits (CID) and detrital iron deposits (DID). All these mineralisation styles are present in large concentrations within the Solomon project area, and when mined will produce two product streams. These are a single product of CID, and a combined product from a blend of BID and DID material.This paper defines the geological characteristics of the Solomon iron deposits as recognised through the exploration and development of this vast resource over the three years since exploration commenced on the project.

INTRODUCTION Generations of tunneling engineers had to fight not only against bursting rock and squeezing ground but also against the destroying power of water. Intrusion of groundwater into the tunnel opening affects the stability of the tunnel support system, reduces the safety of the traffic inside the tunnel, induces corrosion of installed equipment, and provides for creeping currents at electric facilities. Aware of these problems, engineers of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and their consultants opened the way for a new approach in sealing a tunnel. It was made possible by accepting a new method of tunnel construction scarcely applied in the U.S. before. This new technique, the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), provided the basis for the successful installation of a PVC-membrane between two separated shells of tunnel lining, and the carefully directed drainage of groundwater. Beside of the economic benefits already attained by applying the NATM for tunnel construction, the Authority now saves millions of dollars otherwise necessary to maintain the tunnel during its lifetime (Garrett, 1986; Setzer, 1986). But there is a large number of leaking tunnels built according to conventional methods, some of them facing severe problems jeopardizing the safe utilization of these structures. Recently developed methods indicate that even those tunnels can be rehabilitated without extensive costs by draining and sealing them afterwards. A road tunnel in the Austrian Alps provides the scene for a major attempt to convert one of those leaking tunnels into a dry structure.

Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

The effect of superficial gas rate distribution (Jg profile) on down-the-bank metallurgical response was tested in the rougher-scavenger bank (eight 10-m3 tank cells, 4 roughers and 4 scavengers) at Highland Valley Copper Mine's Cu/Mo separation circuit. Three Jg profiles were tested: (a) as found (i.e., typical practice), (b) increasing decreasing (i.e., increasing from cell 1 to 4 and decreasing from cell 5 to 8), and (c) decreasing-increasing (i.e., decreasing from cell 1 to 4 and increasing from cell 5 to 8). The Jg profile approach proved to be of considerable value. Profile (b) gave the best metallurgical results, i.e., the highest down-the-bank grade/recovery (increase in grade at constant recovery was approx. 3-4% compared to the as found case) and the most efficient Cu/Mo separation (cumulative Cu recovery was reduced by almost half - approx. from 20% to 12%, at 99% Mo recovery). The success of the evaluation prompted the implementation of profile (b). Detailed gas dispersion characterization tests (Jg and Db (bubble size)) showed significant discrepancies between the Jg measured directly (using the McGill University sensor) and the Jg calculated from field instrument readings (volumetric gas flowmeter) and machine dimensions (cell cross-sectional area). Tests were designed to reveal the source of disagreement. It was observed that a significant number of bubbles were not able to float (i.e., they were entrained with the tailings), the evidence appearing to be a significant number of very small bubbles (approx. 200-300 µm) which did not have sufficient buoyancy to rise. Consequently, rather than relying on the field instrument, the evaluation depended on the McGill University Jg sensor, which collects bubbles in a tube near the pulp-froth interface, thus providing significance to the data as the measurements were obtained from bubbles that almost certainly floated.

A REVIEW of the steps which have been made to increase knowledge in the field of ferrous physical metallurgy during the closing period of World War II brings both pleasure and disappointment. Contributions of great value have been made, to be sure. However, due partly to the stress of the times, researchers in this field have been in the main directing their attention toward the short-range problems involved in the development and production of materiel for war. Furthermore, publication of the results of a great number of studies has had to be delayed. Much of the German work may, indeed, be lost entirely, owing to the efficiency of our bombers, which managed to account for most of the famous Kaiser Wilhelm Institut of Dusseldorf, not to mention the other large laboratories and manufacturing plants throughout that country. It would seem safe to assume, however, that fundamental research in Germany had been forced to give way to the shallow, but more pressing, engineering problems of a country trying to avoid defeat. In Russia the picture has been clouded by the limitations imposed upon comunication; but this much does seem clear: Russia alone among the great nations of the world has maintained her long-range view and has continued to foster research of the most fundamental type. English workers; on the other hand, appear to have been able only to meet the demands of the pressing problems of war, and their studies have been of the short-range variety. That metallurgical research of any sort should have continued in France during this chaotic period in her history would seem impossible, but, amazingly, a small handful of scientists did manage to carry on their work, and it is to be hoped that more will be heard from them in the future.

The current climate in the mining industry is allowing mining companies to further broaden their views and investigate technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations. Furthermore, underground mine environments will become more demanding for mining equipment and personnel as orebodies become deeper in weaker ground conditions with more extreme environmental conditions. Loading and hauling can represent significant components of the production cycle of an underground mine and automation of these activities can offer considerable benefits. Sandvik has accumulated a long history and experience in loading and hauling automation in underground mining. Since the late 1980s Sandvik has actively participated in several major research and development automation programs leading to the commencement of the development of an integrated system for semiautomated loading in 1999. Development work was later conducted to expand the capabilities of the system for automated hauling during 2001 and the AutoMine« system became commercially available. The first delivery of the AutoMine« system was completed in August 2004 in South America, where the system continues to operate in a full-scale production environment and is being expanded as the production area enlarges. Further systems have been delivered and are operational in North America, Africa and Europe. This paper focuses on the AutoMine« system deployed in Block 4 at De Beers Finsch Mine in South Africa. An overview of the mine and the process used to acquire the system and the key drivers which led to the selection of an automated solution are described. An overview of the initial system installation, subsequent expansions and future plans are presented. This is followed by a summary of the implementation and operational experiences associated with automated underground operations. The paper concludes by summarising the benefits that have been realised.

"In recent years, DEM (discrete element method) softwares, along with 3D laser measuring equipment, have become powerful tools to describe mill charge behavior, as well as forces acting on the liners of SAG mills. With the aim of contributing to streamline this application of the advanced technologies ME Elecmetal and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ, proposed a new approach to improve the design of mill liners using elements from mechanistic modeling of grinding. The paper presents a methodology for continuous improvement of liner design, which uses information from the DEM collision energy spectra in the mill discriminated for the different components (ore and steel balls), as well as information on the breakage properties of the ore being ground. From these it proposes the concept of "effective collisions", which corresponds to the collisions that are of sufficient magnitude to cause breakage, thus allowing to discriminate from impacts that do not cause breakage either in a first impact or after repeated loading. It also tracks the collision of steel balls against the shell in order to assess their potential damage to the liners. An industrial case study is presented of a 38’ diameter SAG mill, which was experiencing challenges associated to liner breakage and low efficiency with the old liner design. Through a modification of the liner design, simulations demonstrated the potential benefit associated to reduction in ultraprojection and improvement in mill capacity. Implementation of the new design in the SAG mill was carried out, resulting in increase in daily throughput from 6 to 12%. Further, the time spent in liner change was reduced by 47% given the reduction in the numbers of parts. This operation also benefited from having no stops due to unplanned shutdowns to replace broken tiles. These demonstrate the benefit of coupling advanced computational tools to sound engineering principles in continuous improvement of liners."

AT the present time the Climax Molybdenum Co. is the largest molybdenum producer in the world and the operator of the largest underground mine in North America. It has grown steadily and rapidly since its beginning in 1917. Only 250,000 lb of MoS2 were produced during the first year from 1917 to 1918 when the company was formed. Operations were suspended shortly thereafter because of the lack of a market and knowledge of the uses of molybdenum. During World War I it was used as a substitute for some rare metals and for minor chemical purposes. After 5 years of intensive research and sales promotion, Climax metallurgists succeeded in finding proper applications for the newly discovered metal and the mine was reopened in 1924. Demand for molybdenum increased gradually and in 1930, 3.5 million lb of MoS2 were produced. In the meantime, research work for additional uses of molybdenum continued until it had established itself as one of the most important alloying elements in producing high quality steels. After the start of World War 11, from January 1942 to October 1953, 43 million tons of molybdenum ore were mined and 484 million lb of MoS2 were produced. Climax mine is located in Colorado, 100 miles southwest of Denver and 12 miles northeast of Leadville on the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. The principal mine workings range from 11,170 to 12,000 ft in elevation. Topographically, it lies in the base of a large cirque that is surrounded by Mt. Bartlett to the north, Clinton Peak and McNamee Peak to the east and Ceresco Ridge to the south. This cirque opens to the west and to the Ten Mile Valley.

"INTRODUCTION Typically waterproofing of conventionally excavated tunnels has been done by installing pre-fabricated sheet membranes between the primary temporary support lining and the secondary permanent inner lining. The membrane acts as a separation or sliding layer between the linings, which is often desirable. The geotextile installed behind the sheet membrane provides the required drainage and protection of the system. The design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of waterproofing sheet membranes. Since primary and secondary linings are separated from each other, forming a double-shell lining system. In that case the secondary lining must be designed for all permanent loads, although the sprayed concrete primary lining continues resists ground and water loads for a long time after construction. Significant progress has been made in sprayed concrete technology over the last two decades, with advanced admixtures, as well as the improved application technology using spraying robots. The development of new admixtures like superplasticizers based on poly-carboxylates, alkali free accelerators and silica fume, enables designers to use permanent sprayed concrete linings (SCL) increasingly for long-term service life. When designed and applied correctly, sprayed concrete can be considered as permanent. The use of spray applied membranes has seen increased use over the last decade in some countries, and demonstrated functionality and cost-effectiveness in several situations. This paper describes the use of the sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345, an EVA polymer based product, and the practical experiences from several projects. SPRAY APPLIED WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES The sprayed waterproofing membrane is polymer based and has been especially developed for underground structures. The membrane is applied between primary and secondary concrete linings and develops high bond strength on both sides to the concrete (doubled-bonded)."

"The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

"The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

"A locked cycle flotation test was done on a sample from the ovoid portion of the Voisey 's Bay copper-nickel sulphide ore. The chemical conditions for this test were generated by prior independent testing. In this test work the time in each of the five separation stages was optimized prior to executing the locked cycle test. A numerical simulation of the continuous circuit material balance was done prior to the locked cycle test. The test results were not fully satisfactory because the flotation of pyrrhotite in the bulk rougher and cleaner stages was not consistent. The preliminary indication was that the samples had oxidized to varying degrees during storage.INTRODUCTIONINCO has performed batch laboratory flotation testing on ore from Voisey's Bay which is a mixture of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Earlier, Lakefield Research was contracted by Diamond Field Resources to test the ""flotability"" of the ore, which included a pilot plant trial. INCO's J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory has repeated many of the batch tests that Lakefield did to verify their results. Based on their own work, INCO has modified the circuit proposed by Lakefield Research. The modified circuit is based on batch test work, but no locked cycle test (LCT) was done. It is believed that this circuit will produce a copper concentrate at 29-30% copper and a primary nickel concentrate at 15-20% with recoveries of 80% or above.For several years the University of Toronto has been working with INCO to provide ""hands on"" experience for undergraduate students as an Industrial Research Project (IRP). This year, the objective for IRP was to optimize the time for each of the five separation stages for the Voisey's Bay ore then to numerically and experimentally simulate the material balance for a continuous circuit."

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. With increase of cover depth, dynamic incidents, such as large gateroad convergences and coal bursts, are frequently encountered when mining deep longwall panels. It would be more adverse due to large inclination of the coal bed. Because of the shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC) sliding downhill, toppling of shields, disconnection of AFC to the stage loader are related to it. Tangshan coal mine is a typical deep, inclined coal mine situated in the east of China. The split-level longwall panel layout is being adopted for mitigating problems above, where tailgate entries of longwall panels are driven below gob edge and along the floor, while headgate entries are driven along the roof. Wire mesh and steel sets have been used empirically for support for tailgates for about a decade, which reduces the tunneling speed. In view of this fact, the paper serves to investigate the proper adjustment of the tailgate locations and to analyze the resulting stress and yield conditions according to support strategy. First, field measurements and observations were carried out. Stress data distributed within surrounding rock mass were obtained, especially within the roof since the roof consists of only a coal sheet with a thickness of 2–4 m. Roof pressure of the tailgate represents the pressure at the gob edge since it is below the gob edge. The convergence data were also collected. Numerical modelling using FLAC3D™ was conducted and validated by side abutment stress data. The double-yield constitutive model was used to simulate the gob. The finalized tailgate layout and design were determined through comparison of three scenarios. The research in this paper can help engineers choose the proper tailgate layout and support strategies for coal mines that are going to adopt a split-level longwall panel layout for mining deep, inclined longwall panels.

The hope is expressed, however, that the paper will be of additional assistance, and of particular help in introducing sound maintenance principles to those who are moving into this field of operation for the first time.Hoist RopesWITH a multi-rope friction winder system, structural upset within the hoist rope's cross section can occur if the ropes slip in the drum treads. This upset will usually appear at either end of the rope at the tangent point of the drum or deflection sheave with the respective conveyance in the normal uppermost position. This slipping action on the drum causes the outer cover of a Full Locked Coil or the strands of a stranded rope to shift, leading to structural upset. The result very often means that the ropes have to be withdrawn from service before completing their maximum service potential.The cause of any rope slipping in its tread can be associated with a discrepancy in tension of that rope between one side of the drum and the other."

THIS paper discusses what mining reports should contain when presented to the California State Corporation Department, to accompany applications for the sale of stock to the general public, but the principles involved apply to mine financing everywhere. Such reports should 'be as clear and concise as possible, endeavoring to tell the truth in as few words as necessary. Should the engineer be aware that his report is to be used in connection with the sale of stock to the general public, he should consider the public as his client as well as the person who actually employs him. It is always required that the engineer be favorably known and of recognized standing. The following points should be given careful attention : 1. A legal description and location of the property. 2. Transportation conditions, and how they may be expected to affect the operating costs. 3. A brief history of the property, its production record as to tonnage, grade, and character of the ore should be given. Should the property have suspended operations for any reason, this should be given. Any details of former operating costs should be given, especially as to how any improvement could be made, due to better methods which might be employed.' 4. The main geological features and whether they are such as to lead the engineer to believe that the mine may possibly 'be exhausted or the ore of such grade as to be no longer profitable. If he considers them favorable, he should give his reasons for the belief that further development work may produce profitable results. A map showing these features should be submitted, and it is not necessary that such map be highly colored or contain any more than the essential matters. 5.
