The fluid mapper, a model relatively new to the petroleum industry, was used to study the effect of various mobility ratios on the areal sweepout efficiency for two typical spacing patterns. The experiments indicated the areal sweepout for the five-spot pattern varied from 51.8 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.093 to 89.1 per cent for a ratio of 24.4. In the direct line-drive pattern, the areal sweepout varied from 58.7 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.089 to 92.0 per cent at a ratio of 24.8. The fluid mapper may prove useful to determine quickly the effective areal sweepout for any well spacing. INTRODUCTION The effect of the mobility ratio on the areal sweepout efficiency during primary depletion of a water drive reservoir and during secondary recovery operations has recently become more widely recognized The mobility ratio, M, is defined as: _ kjp (displaced fluid) k/u (displacing fluid) where k = effective permeability u = viscosity When the displacing fluid is miscible with the displaced fluid, the permeabilities are equal and the mobility ratio may be expressed as a ratio of viscosities: u (displacing fluid) u (displaced fluid) The mathematical analysis for calculating the areal sweepout efficiency with mobility ratio other than unity is quite tedious.5,11 An experimental method by using a potentiometric model2 in a step-wise manner and in using an X-ray shadowgraph model3,12 with continuous fluid flow has been published. Several types of models have been used to study oil and gas reservoir performance. These models may be classified as physical, electrolytic, potentiometric, X-ray shadowgraph, and fluid mapper. The X-ray shadowgraph and fluid mapper are models relatively new to petroleum engineering and have not been used extensively for specific applications. The theory of the fluid mapper indicates it may be adapted to a study of areal sweepout efficiencies for various mobility ratios as well as other complex problems in petroleum engineering. The use of the model and results obtained when using displacing and displaced fluids of equal densities but different viscosities are discussed. FLUID MAPPER DEVELOPMENT H. S. Hele-ShawV eveloped a fluid mapper model based on the hydrodynamic theory. This theory is that in the steady flow of a viscous fluid between horizontal parallel plates spaced a very small distance apart, the effect of viscous shear is of such magnitude in the vertical plane that the motion in the horizontal plane is practically undisbrted streamline flow. Techniques developed by Hele-Shaw were not expanded and no additional developments in fluid mapper models were forthcoming until A. D. Moore, University of Michigan, published a series of papers starting in 1949, which describe the construction of a flexible and inexpensive model'h nd the fluid mapper technique for the solution of certain problems.' To /neet the need for a subsurface flowmeter capable of measuring low rates of flow, a new type flowmeter has been built and tested in the field. This instrument is self-contairzed, can be run on a wire measuritzg line, and may be run through 2-in tubing. It consists of a rotameter flow-measuring assembly used in conjuncfion with a conventional subsurface instrument clock and chart. Integral with the tool is an inflatable packer which, by effecting a seal between casing and tool, diverts all fluid through the metering assembly. Packers of different size adapt the tool to different sizes of casing or liner. The flowmeter is capable of measuring rates of flow as low as 4 BID. The flowmeter has been run experimentally in seven wells. It has yielded satisfactory resrrlts in five of the wells, and in the other two it failed to operate because of loose sand in the hole. INTRODUCTION One of the oldest problems facing the producing branch of the petroleum industry is the location of depths of entry of fluid into a wellbore and the determination of the amount of fluid entering at each depth. This problem is often encountered in oil and gas wells completed in single producing horizons as well as in multiple pays; it is a common problem in oil wells which produce excessive volumes of gas. Several subsurface instruments designed to detect and meter flow in the producing interval of wells have been described in the literature.1,2,3,4 Most of these, however, were apparently intended for use in wells producing at relatively high rates of flow, and consequently lack sensitivity to low flow rates. Because of this and of other possible disadvantages inherent in these instruments, development of the subsurface flowmeter described in this report was undertaken. DESIGN OF FLOWME'I'ER Design Requirements In considering the requirements for a flowmeter that would not be subject to the limitations of devices existing at the time work was started, attention was first given to the size of the tool. Such an instrument should be of sufficiently small diameter that it could be lowered readily in 2-in tubing in a producing well. The flowmeter should contain a recording unit so that it might be run on a wire measuring line with conventional reeling equipment. It should not be too long to be accommodated by a portable lubricator of the type used for running conventional subsurface instruments. The metering mechanism of the flowmeter should not be affected appreciably by the viscosity or density of the flowing fluid. Such an instrument should record flow rates in the range from less than 10 B/D to over 100 B/D. To achieve this, a packer should he provided to divert through the instrument all fluid flow in the wellbore. This packer should be of such nature that in the event of excessive flow the fluid would bypass the instrument instead of forcing it up the wellhore. At the Mount Isa mine, Mount Isa, Qld., Australia, sublevel open-stope mining is used for copper ore while both sublevel open-stope and cut-and-fill methods are used for the silver-lead-zinc ores. Production in 1979¬80 was 4 730 000 t (5,200,000 st) copper ore and 2 590 000 t (2,850,000 st) of lead ore. The deepest mine level currently is 960 m below the surface. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The mine is located in the valley of the Leichhardt River in Lower Proterozoic sediments of the Mount Isa group. The regional strike of the sediments is north¬south and they have a persistent westerly dip of about 1.1 rad (65°). In the mine area, the Mount Isa group comprises a sequence of alternating bands of dolomitic shales and siltstones some 3.2 km (2 miles) in width. It is bounded on the east by greenstones and quartzose sediments of the Eastern Creek volcanics, and on the west by the Mount Isa fault, west of which occur schists and other metamorphic rocks. The ore bodies as currently known at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart shale, a formation of thinly bedded pyritic, dolomitic, and volcanic shales some 1070 m (3500 ft) thick. Towards the top of the Mount Isa group sediments, copper and silver-lead-zinc ore bod¬ies occur as contiguous but discrete entities and are mined and treated separately (see Figs. I and 2). Argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor associated sulfides occur in distinct concordant bands throughout the Urquhart shales. Wherever these bands are grouped together in sufficient density they constitute silver-lead-zinc ore bodies with widths varying up to 36.6 m (120 ft). Other mineralized bands are common in intervening beds. Individual ore bodies persist for many hundreds of meters concordant with the strike and dip of the enclosing shales. Intersections of these beds with fold axes provide local zones of enrichment but otherwise the mineral content of the ore bodies varies only slightly throughout the extent of the dip and strike. Chalcopyrite is the only important primary copper mineral. It occurs in association with pyrite and pyrrhotite as disseminated flocks and as vein fillings throughout irregularly shaped zones of folded, brecciated, and re¬crystallized Urquhart shale. These zones, which are lo¬cally termed "silica-dolomite" bodies, are broadly transgressive to the shale bedding and confine all significant copper mineralization to the virtual exclusion of silver¬lead-zinc mineralization. In some areas, the downward percolation of acidic water through faults and shears has caused extensive leaching of the coarse-grained carbon¬ates to depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft), but most of the silica-dolomite remains unleached and the ground is competent. The majority of lead ore being mined is north of the main shaft pillar (R62, U62) area. A detailed study of a number of methods of relative permea-abilitv measurement has been made in a search for the tech-niqrle most suited to routine analysis of cores taken from reservoir rock. It has been found from tests run on the same samples of core material by a number of techniques that the Penn State, Hassler, Hafford, and dispersed feed techniques all yield results which are felt to be reliable. Conditions under which the faster single core dynamic technique may be used are described. Further work on the calculation of relative permeabilities to oil from data obtained by the gas drive method is needed before this latter rapid method can be utilized. Correlations between theoretical studies and experimental results have been obtained in studies of the boundary effect. pressure distribution in two-phase flow, and gas expansion effects. Previous conclusions that the effects of the outflow boundary could be made negligibly small have been substantiated. Results of experimentally determined oil and gas pressure distributions along a core sample during flow are presented. Further studies of the effects of rate of flow in the measurement of relative permeability-saturation relations have shown that results are independent of the rate of flow as long as the flow rate is below the point where inertial effects commence. An analysis of the effects of a severalfold expansion of gas along the flow path indicates that while saturation gradients are induced in the test sample, the errors caused by this phenomenon in relative permeability measurements are small. INTRODUCTION Many pages of literature have been devoted to pointing out the need for relative permeability-saturation relations in reservoir engineering. One of the most attractive ways of obtaining this information is by the analysis of samples of core material taken from the formation in question, and again literature has described man); methods for obtaining these data. It is the purpose of this paper to present the work that has been done in the study of some of these published methods together with some other methods that have been recently developed in this laboratory. Also, a study of some of the factors that influence the laburatory determination of relative permeability-saturation relations is presented. FACTORS WHICH AFFECT LABORATORY STUDY OF FLUID FLOW THROUGH RESERVOIR ROCK To determine relative permeability-saturation relations of samples of reservoir rock in the laboratory, it is important to know what factors affect these measurements in order that the magnitude of these effects can be ascertained and steps then can be taken to eliminate or, in some cases, to minimize them. The factors that have been investigated are the boundary effect, the effect of gas expansion. and the rate effect. Boundary Effect In laboratory experiments in which two immiscible fluids are flowed through a porous medium, there exists a discontinuity of capillary properties at the outflow face. THE wall-building properties of salt-water drilling muds can be improved markedly by the addition of: (I) natural gums, such as tragacanth, karaya, and ghatti; (2) seaweeds, such as Irish moss; or (3) gelatinized starch. Results of laboratory tests have been confirmed by field trials. For drilling operations in which the mud becomes contaminated by salt, either through penetrating salt-bearing rocks or by addition of sea water to the mud, the added cost resulting from the use of one of the substances listed above is more than offset by freedom from stuck drill pipe and ease in running casing. INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for many years that oil production might be seriously hampered by infiltration of water from the drilling mud.1-4 As knowledge of the mechanism of the wall-building process advanced, methods were developed for evaluating the filtration characteristics of muds.5-11 The wall-building properties of fresh-water muds are commonly regulated by the addition of bentonitic clays, or of agents to promote the dispersion of the natural mud solids. When strata bearing soluble salts are encountered in the course of drilling, the salts are incorporated in the mud; the clay solids are flocculated and water loss is increased tremendously. Methods generally used in controlling filtration of fresh-water muds are no longer applicable. The problem of reducing water loss from salt-water muds is not confined to any particular area, but is acute in parts of West Texas. Salt beds several hundred feet thick must be penetrated before the oil-bearing formation is reached. Since the formation drilled does not provide mud-making material, it is necessary to use large quantities of commercial clays, and even the best commercial clay does not afford relief from the problem of high filtration. A laboratory study has been made of methods of improving the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds, and some of the methods have been used in field practice. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS Procedure Inasmuch as the immediate object of the investigation was the development of means of improving the wall-building properties of muds used in West Texas, an attempt was made to employ muds in the laboratory study comparable to those in field use. Samples of muds used in drilling the producing formations in six wells were secured. The properties of these samples are summarized in Table I, which lists the densities, viscosities, filtrations, and analyses of the filtrates for calcium, chloride, and sulphate. Viscosity was measured in the Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester' at a pressure of 10o lb. per sq. in. Filtration rates are considerably higher than those of usual fresh-water muds, which amount to about 20 c.c. in 30 min. Water loss was so rapid in samples 4, 5 and 6 that filtration was complete in less than 10 min. and the values for 30 min. were extrapolated from the rates at shorter

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important clean energy, which has been explored worldwide in recent decades. Supercritical CO2 acts as fracturing fluid for shale gas production. The safety monitoring is essential to prevent any kinds of leakage from the reservoir as the supercritical CO2 physically stored hundred kilometres underground. Seismic tomography is an imaging technique that uses induced seismic waves to create three dimensional images of the subsurface. It is an effective monitoring method to evaluate the caprock integrity in the carbon dioxide sequestration storage (CCS). In this experimental research, a simulated uniaxial compressive load is applied on a granite sample to analyze the stress redistribution for long-term in-situ caprock integrity during CO2 injection. The induced seismic waves are recorded and seismic events are traced based on the Geiger algorithm. The frequency of seismic events correlates with the caprock failure evolution. The acquired seismic data is divided into four regimes based on the frequency of seismic events and the failure process to examine the failure evolution. Furthermore, the travel time and distance is plotted to analyze the variation of velocity. Finally, the double difference tomography (TomoDD) algorithm using arrival time is adopted to recalculate the locations of seismic events and velocity structure in each regime. The results indicate that the passive seismic system can map the caprock stress distribution and allow for imaging of the caprock integrity. TomoDD exhibits sound improvements to relocate seismic events both in relative and absolute locations as well as to characterize the local velocity structure. The study further reveals that seismic monitoring along with TomoDD could evaluate the caprock failure accurately in the CCS.Introduction To reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) has been suggested to as a means of continuing to use fossil fuel resources while offsetting their negative environmental impacts (Eiken et al 2011). A positive CCS project should retain 99% of the injected supercritical CO2 (pressure is greater than 7.38 MPa and temperature is above 31.04? and a density is of about 700 kg/m3) over at least 100 years (Davidson et al 2005). As large quantities of supercritical carbon dioxide are being injected into full scale storage projects, caprock stress is redistributing and the leakage could occur anywhere over a wide storage area (Hou et al 2012). Acoustic waves are emitted from the caprock, as it fractures due to the CO2 injection, which can be detected by passive seismic sensors (Shitashima et al 2013). Tomography techniques are advantageous for imaging the integrity of the caprock in the CCS projects. Velocity tomography uses waves to model entities based on the arrival time of waves (Westman et al 2001, Westman 2004, Luxbacher et al 2008). Seismic tomography is a data inference technique that exploits information contained in seismic records to constrain 2D or 3D models of the Earth's interior. It generally requires the solution of a large inverse problem to obtain a heterogeneous seismic model that is consistent with field observations (Kudryavtsev et al 2012)."

This paper presents a reservoir engineering analysis of the performance data for a waterflooding project in the Johnson Lease, South Ward field. This type of engineering analysis adds to the knowledge of the mechanics of water flooding. This study reveals that in general (a) high ultimate areal sweep-out efficiencies (95 to 100 per cent) can be expected, and (b) cross-flow among strata of different permeabilities during the fill-up phase can have an important influence on the behavior and should be dealt with in studying reservoirs for water flooding. The analysis further showed that the recovery predictions based on what was considered a consistent interpretation of core data and logs were low because little contribution was assumed from the low permeability, oil-bearing sand sections which have apparently yielded considerable waterflood oil. This project has yielded in excess of 2 1/2 times as much oil by water flooding as by primary depletion. These very favorable results were achieved without the use of any special injection well completion techniques. However, all of the low permeability material war included in the section open to injection despite its poor estimated primary yield. LEASE PERFORMANCE HISTORY The South Ward field lies in the southeast corner of Ward County near the southern tip of the tremendous Yates trend. Deposition of sand bodies along the seashore reefs during the latter part of the Permian period established what have turned out to be ideal conditions to form a great number of independent productive sands. Probably, these reservoirs in Ward and Winkler counties are providing operators with some of the nation's richest sources of secondary oil reserves through the use of waterflooding techniques. In South Ward field water has been very successfully used to flood oil from the Bennett sand occurring at a depth of about 2,300 to 2,400 ft. About 150 ft above the Bennett sand reservoir, the Grand Falls sand produced gas from a large cap extending over most of the field. The Atlantic Refining Co.'s 320-acre W. D. Johnson lease (Fig. 1) is on the northwest edge of the structure with only gas cap apparently present in the Grand Falls sand. The Bennett sand under this lease is oil productive, however, having a gross sand thickness averaging about 80 ft with a net of 18 ft of fairly clean, highly permeable sand, and about 36 ft of oil-bearing sand with low permeability and high water saturation. The lower permeability sand is interbedded with numerous layers of lime, shale, and anhydrite. Radioactivity logs from 12 wells and cores from two, examples of which are shown in Fig. 2, reveal that the total Bennett sand pore volume is about 71,000 bbl/acre. The estimated initial water saturation averages 41 per cent in the 54 ft of sand considered to contain oil; thus, also considering an estimated 18 per cent oil shrinkage, the lease originally contained about 34,000 bbl of oil per acre. Original pressure was probably about 1,400 psig. PVT correlations indicate that the reservoir fluid was originally saturated with gas. INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. IN general, fatty acids or their alkali salts do not cause clean quartz to float. However, the presence of multivalent ions, such as the alkaline-earth metal ions and heavy-metal ions, can activate quartz and thus make it respond to soap flotation. The mechanism of activation and soap flotation of quartz has been studied.1-4 The problem was attacked by making flotation tests rather than by careful adsorption measurements on suspensions of ground quartz in solutions containing the activator and the collector. Attempts have been made to determine the adsorption of barium ion and calcium ion on quartz. The results have only qualitative value as the analytical methods were not adequately precise. Artificial radioactivity and progress in radioactivity detection have introduced a new analytical tool, which can have a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than that of other methods.5-6 In the experimental work described in this paper the radioactive tracers, barium 140 and carbon 14, were employed. Lauric acid was synthesized, having a radioactive carbon atom and was used with Ba140 to study the adsorption of barium and laurate ions from aqueous solution on ground quartz. Flotation tests, using the vacuum flotation technique,4 were run in conjunction with the adsorption experiments. The object of this investigation was to understand better the reaction mechanism of barium activation and soap flotation of quartz. Methods and Materials Quartz Sample Preparation: Lumps of hand picked quartz, washed free of stains, were reduced in size to -20 mesh in laboratory crushers. The product was boiled in concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the abraded iron. The cleaned product then was ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, using siliceous pebbles, to pass through a 200 mesh screen. The ground product was deslimed by sedimentation at 37 microns. This -200 mesh +400 mesh material was subjected again to boiling with concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by washing with distilled water and further desliming. The cycle was repeated until no trace of iron could be detected in the wash liquor. During the final washing, the pH of the wash water was checked to insure the complete removal of the acid from the mineral. The quartz then' was rinsed with conductivity water. The resulting product was dried in a drying oven and stored in mason jars. The impurities (spectrographic) were as follows: Al, 0.01 to 0.001 pct; Li, Mg, Mn,, Na, each less than 0.001 pct; Fe and Cu not detected. The specific surface of the quartz sample was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.7 The average of two measurements was 881 sq cm per g. The calculated specific surface for 37/74 micron quartz particles, using a surface factor of 1.96,8 is 900 sq cm per g. This is in good agreement with the measured value of 881 sq cm per g. Beta-Counting Method: The radioactive isotope of barium used in the experimental work was barium 140. It has a sufficiently long half-life, 12.8 days, emits high-energy beta particles (up to 1.0

The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

"Micropiles are small diameter cast insitu reinforced grouted piles and it has been effectively used in many applications of ground improvement. It increases the load carrying capacity of soil and reduces the settlement. It is also used in strengthening existing foundations. In this study, the effect of Solid and Hollow micropiles on the load carrying capacity of footing resting on sand is studied. The effects of solid Micropiles are investigated by conducting experimental model studies. The parameters involved in this study include the position of pile, pile length and pile spacing. Load test was carried out on a model footing resting on sand with solid and hollow micropiles. Load test trail is repeated for footing on Micropiles with varying lengths of 10, 20, and 30 times the diameter and spacing equal to 5, 4, 3, 2 times the diameter. The load-settlement behavior of each case is compared. Optimum length and optimum spacing of both the solid micropile and hollow micropile are determined. It is also observed that the effect of micropiles in the peripheral of footing resists lateral displacement of soil underneath the footing. The micropile beyond significant depth becomes redundant.INTRODUCTIONA micropile is a small diameter (less than 300 mm) drilled and grouted pile that is typically reinforced - FHWA-NHI 2005 (Federal Highway Administration-National Highway Institution). It is constructed by drilling a borehole, placing a steel reinforcing element into the borehole and grouting it. Hollow micropiles are typically reinforced by solid central bar that occupies about onethird of the hole volume. The grout is placed by gravity, under pressure methods or by a combination of both (post grouting). Thus, micropiles can be considered as small drilled-shafts that are specially drilled and grouted.Historically, micropiles have been introduced in Italy as a foundation system mainly for retrofitting and underpinning of structures that had sustained damage during World War II and access for conventional piling equipment was not possible (Bruce, 1988). The second generation of micropiles is a pressure grouted piles with a central mono all thread bar (with diameter up to 89 mm). They are installed by using either an open or cased hole drilling method.A new generation of micropiles, termed Grout injection bore micropiles (IBOR), was developed in the 1980s. The IBOR, currently named hollow bar micropiles, utilizes a continuous all-threaded hollow steel bar as the drilling and grouting conduit, which allows drilling and grouting simultaneously without the need of a casing during drilling. A sacrificial (lost) bit with openings that allow for pressure grouting of the hole is threaded onto the end of the hollow bar and is left in place following drilling. A drilling fluid (air, water, or grout) is introduced through the hollow bar and allows the spoils to flush from the borehole opening. Upon reaching the required depth, neat cement grout is then injected under high pressure into the drilled hole to fill the annulus between the bar and the soil from the bottom to the top. Due to the grouting method employed, the shape of the hollow bar micropile is expected to have a bulb shape with an enlarged base."

INTRODUCTION The Climax Mine is a property of Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of AMAX Inc. Climax is located in the central part of the Colorado Mineral Belt on the west slope of the Tenmile Range, Lake County, Colorado at 3,425' m. above sea level. Climax Mine, the largest single producer of molybdenum in the free world, has been a cornerstone of mining in the State of Colorado for many years. Before molybdenum was known, the early hunters of gold and silver laid their hands on the outcrops of the Climax deposit and left it as low quality lead or graphite without much value. Today, 44,000 TPD of ore is extracted from the heart of Bartlett Mountain. The molybdenum, separated from the ore, is vital for mankind, being used for everything from fertilizer to fine components of aerospace ships, because of its valuable physical and chemical properties. The operations at Climax have never remained static. Constant demand for the "gray gold", and technological advancements, have converted Climax into an "open book of technology", where learning the still-hidden secrets of mining is a continuing process. (All figures related to tons are metric tons) BRIEF HISTORY The mine produced its first molybdenum ore in 1918. It was shut down in 1919, resumed production in 1924, and has been in continuous production since that time. During World War 11, a peak of 20,000 tons per day was reached, then tonnage dropped from 1945 to 1950. Since 1951, production has been in- creasing, reaching a peak of 46,000 tons per day during the month of June, 1980. Early mining used shrinkage stoping. Block caving using the grizzly system was introduced in the early 1930's. Caving methods were improved through empirical studies of rock behavior and by trial and error, evolving a very efficient mining method by the late 1940's. This form of continuous retreat panel caving, with small modifications, is still used today, and has made the Climax Mine one of the biggest underground mines in the world. The Climax Mine, synonymous with molybdenum, was essentially an underground mine until 1973 when the open pit was introduced. Since then, both mining methods have operated successfully. Current production is 60% from underground, and the remaining from the open pit. Climax has been in continuous operation for 56 years, and as of December 31, 1980, more than 386 million tons of ore have been mined. The orebody is not fully defined, and at the present mining rate, the known life span of the mine will be to the year 2020. GEOLOGY The Climax deposit is a large low-grade porphyry molybdenum deposit somewhat similar to porphyry copper deposits, with a well- mineralized quartz molybdenum stock work sys- tem. It lies within the pre-Cambrian granites and schists and the Tertiary Climax porphyry. The age of mineralization is thought to be mid-Tertiary and is characterized by fracture filling and replacement through silicification. The main economic mineral is molybdenum, with pyrite, cassiterite and wolframite as by-products. Fluorite and topaz also occur, but are not recovered at this

Residual lattice strai?zs were produced in 2024 aluminum and ingot iron by uniaxial tensile deformation. These strains were rneasured on the original surface and ulith depth below the surface. The strains conformed approximately to those from a macroscopic stress distribution but they were not truly macroscopic in nature. The exact mechanism which apparently causes the coherently difi9,acting region of each grain to behave as if macroscopically stressed was not determined. MACROSCOPIC stresses in metals produce strains in the lattice which result in X-ray line broadening and line displacements. The latter effect can be utilized in a technique for determining stresses in metals as first shown by Lester and born.' Subsequent advances in technique have enabled the X-ray method of stress measurement to be satisfactorily applied to many problems involving residual stresses of a macroscopic nature, such as those due to welding, grinding, shot-peening, and so forth. In the case of stresses such as those described above, the correlation of X-ray- and mechanically determined data has been generally good. However, plastically extended polycrystalline metals have sometimes been reported2 to show line displacements upon release of the applied tensile load, yet the nature or origin of the residual lattice strains, rls, producing these displacements has never been clear. As will be pointed out, this lack of clarity regarding the macroscopic or microscopic nature and origin of these stresses casts doubt on the validity of results achieved by the commonly accepted techniques of X-ray stress measurement. This anomalous behavior requires clarification to remove the doubts concerning X-ray stress measurement. The present paper is the result of an investigation of the interesting behavior of such plastically extended polycrystalline metal bodies. The studies were originated to carry out the following tasks: 1) Observe whether a residual lattice strain is produced as a result of plastic extension and show whether any residual lattice strains produced can be related to the usual concept of a macrostress. 2) Examine the origin of any residual lattice strains observed. 3) Consider the implications or consequences of the existence of such residual lattice strains on the problem of X-ray stress measurement. THEORY 1) Lattice Strains. The theoretical developments necessary for the treatment of lattice strains and their relation to stresses follow from the classical theory of elasticity and have been adequately covered by arrett. For an isotropic solid under homogeneous deformation, it can be shown that, for uniaxial stresses where Dl is the macrostress acting in the longitudinal direction; E$L is the lattice strain in the plane defined by the surface normal and the longitudinal direction at an angle, , from the surface normal; ET is the similar strain in the transverse plane; E is Young's modulus; and v is Poisson's ratio. Eq. [2] is independent of angle + and Eq. [I] is a linear function of sin2, see Fig. 1, and can be solved analytically for DL if E and u are known and EL is measured. Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table 1), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term potash originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first US patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 27.5 Mt K20 produced in the world in 1980 (Searls, 1981) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K20, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1.0% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K2O). Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such deposits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in Table 1. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971). The structural basins within which marine evaporites occur are of two main types: (a) cratonic basins formed by broad epirogenic movements (for example, the Michigan Basin of the midwestern United States and the Permian Zechstein Basin of eastern Europe), and (b) grabens, commonly related to continental

"This paper describes the Sasol coal liquefaction process, as used in South Africa. It covers coal supply, coal gasification, gas purification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the major utility systems involved and the economics of the process.IntroductionThe Sasol coal liquefaction process is based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are in turn obtained by gasification of coal with steam and oxygen. The process is shown schematically in Figure I.The first step in the process is coal preparation, in which the coal is crushed and screened to a 3-50 mm size for gasification on one side and to -3 mm size for steam and power production on the other. Oxygen needed for coal gasificatoin is produced in the air separation plant.Coal is gasified under pressure by steam and oxygen in the Lurgi gasification plant, where raw, impure gas is produced . The raw gas is first washed in a scrubber with a circulating gas liquor, heat is then recovered from it in a waste heat recovery boiler and the gas is further cooled for purification. Water-insoluble materials (tar oils) in the gas liquor are separated from aqueous solution and sent to tar refining for the recovery of tar products. The aqueous portion of the gas liquor goes to a Phenosolvan solvent extraction process, where phenols and ammonia are recovered. Water then proceeds to the effluent treatment plant.The scrubbed and cooled raw gas goes to a Rectisol gas purification plant, where all components other than hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane are removed as completely as possible by absorption in refrigerated methanol. The acid gases (CO2, H2S) stripped from the methanol in the Rectisol unit are processed in a Stretford plant for recovery of sulphur. Regenerated methanol is returned to the process. The purified synthesis gas is passed to the fluidized-bed Synthol reactors, where Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions take place.The synthesis products are recovered in a product recovery unit as separate streams of decant oil containing higher-molecular- weight hydrocarbons, light oil comprised of lower-molecular- weight species, the aqueous stream containing water solubles, a C3/C4 stream, a C2 stream , a methane stream and a hydrogen-rich stream. Most of the hydrogen is recycled to the Synthol reactors; a major portion of the methane is reformed to hydrogen and carbon monoxide for recycle; the C2 fraction goes to an ethylene plant; and liquid streams proceed to the product refinery.The product refinery is used to upgrade and purify the Synthol products to specification fuels and chemicals.Sasol l, the first coal liquefaction plant in South Africa , was built in 1955. It is still operating and has a product output of about half a million tonnes per year. The Sasol II plant is in a commissioning stage and will be in full operation in 1981. It is about five times the size of Sasoll. It uses over 12 million tonnes of coal and produces more than 2 million tonnes of saleable products annually (1,2,3). The Sasol llI plant, which is a mirror image of Sasol II, is under construction and scheduled for completion in 1983."

THE year 1937 started off most hopefully for the metal industry but the prices for nonferrous metals declined after reaching a peak in the first quarter. E. & M. J. average prices for March were: -electrolytic copper f.o.b. refinery for domestic delivery 15.775c., lead 7.19c., and zinc 7.38c. There was the usual talk of shortages and the accompanying peak in the market prices of securities of producing companies. In retrospect it now appears that this was the peak of general security prices as well and of most commodity prices. On Dec. 1 copper was back to 11c., lead to 5c., and zinc to 5.5c. At the same time metal security prices had fallen to less than 40 per cent of their March highs. This has not been a purely domestic phenomenon. Metal prices have followed a similar course in London, in spite of the fact that in all three metals a tariff wall separates the domestic market from the foreign. There is nothing in the record to suggest that planning has so far had any stabilizing effect on prices. It is doubtful whether anybody will he found to claim credit for the planning. Strong evidence supports the conclusion that domestic demand for these and the other metals has been dammed back by the uncertainties confronting those who are considering long term construction commitments. This is particularly true with the public utilities, who are the largest consumers of copper and lead. If the plans were designed to maintain employment rather than to maintain political control of the Government, it would appear that they should be discarded. The course of the steel industry has been followed so closely in the press that no comment is necessary to indicate its similarity.
