The Bannockburn gold area covers the four townships of Bannockburn, Argyle, Hincks, and Montrose, lying in the western part of the Matachewan district of Ontario (see Figure 1). The geology of these four town-ships was studied by H. C. Cooke of the Geological Survey, in 1917-18, and is shown in his map of the district. In the fall of 1930, a rich gold-bearing quartz vein was discovered in the northwest part of Bannockburn by B. S. Ashley. A prospecting rush followed the discovery; many claims were staked in the Bannockburn area, and, during the summer of 1931, a considerable amount of prospecting was done.

This paper presents some of the results of a research on long-term subsidence over and near the chain pillar systems -the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence in most longwall operation is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. For the cases where long-term subsidence is significant, it has been found that the development process can be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

Cedarvale station was constructed as part of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Line, under the operational Yonge-University Line Subway box of Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). The station was constructed as an open-cut, which necessitated the underpinning of the existing TTC box to minimize the impact on the Subway and allow its unhindered operation. Six mined galleries, 4 m wide by 2.75 m high, were excavated sequentially (SEM) immediately under the existing box, to provide the required space for the installation of the main underpinning beams. This novel solution was executed successfully providing quick access for the main excavation works to commence.

Since 1945, a commercial-scale pilot plant for the gasification of lignite has been operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description, operation, and objectives of this pilot plant have already been described in previous reports (6, 7, 8). Although the experimental data obtained from the operation of the externally heated retort have been tabulated and summarized (1, 7), few studies have been made in the correlation of these data. The purpose of the present investigation was to review the data taken in tests of the lignite-gasification pilot plant and to correlate the gas-composition data in terms of their basic factors.

From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940 (reference A), Permanente Cement Company has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposit at Permanente, California, The encouraging results outlined in this paper are the result of Permanente's latest effort. This paper discusses the factors governing the selection of the flowsheet with particular reference to marketability of the sand tailing by-product. The process flow is outlined in detail, and operating statistics of the plant are presented. Finally, the problems encountered in the operation of Permanente's beneficiation plant are discussed as well as solutions sought and found.

M ETHODS by which Americanization is developed among the foreign workers at the mines in the United States, with particular reference to mines of the Pennsylvania coal region, were discussed in a most constructive way at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute. Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute's Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."

PRESIDENT Edwin Ludlow and Secretary Bradley Stoughton made their first-trip of the year 1921 to visit Local Sections of the Institute, and talk over Institute interests and policies, during the early part of April. The main purpose of the trip, as usual, was to bring back to headquarters suggestions or comments on the Institute's work on the part of, members. The trip was made a brief, one by the necessity of remaining in New Fork until Apr. 1, and of the attendance of President Ludlow at a meeting of American Engineering Council and. the organization of a Philadelphia Section of the Institute in Philadelphia on Apr. 16.

This study investigates the role of nitrogen gas injection in the dissolution rate of Si into liquid Al. A unique revolving liquid metal tank was used, with a capacity of 50 kg of liquid Al. Experiments without gas injection have shown that the dissolution of Si increases as the bath superheat and the tangential velocity of the liquid Al increase. When injecting nitrogen gas at flow rates between 0-5 lit/min in the vicinity of the solid Si, results so far clearly show greater dissolution. In addition, results on the role of the gas flow rate relative to the position of the nozzle are presented and analyzed.

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

EARLY in 1945 the laboratories of the Southern Research Institute will begin active research investigations on behalf of industrial clients. This achievement has come after four years of planning by a group of Alabama businessmen, and is in partialanswer to an urgent need in the South. Those who conceived the Institute have long realized that a marked relationship exists between scientific research and the economic well-being of the several regions of the country. Clearly, technological research, generally absent in the South, is the medium through which are created new finished goods industries, and the increase of technological research is perhaps the most important long-range project in the South.

The effect of lime ratio on phase composition and alumina leaching property of MgO-contained calcium aluminate clinker were investigated by analytical reagent, the XRD analysis of its mechanism was discussed. The results showed that: when the sintering temperature was 1350 ℃, C/A was 1.4, A/S was 1.3 and the content of MgO was 4%, the increase of the C/A promoted the formation of C12A7 and restrained the formation of Q-phase. The alumina-leaching ratio of the clinker (A/S was 1.3) was increased from 74.33% to 91.34% when the content of CaO was 5.21%.

The paper gives an account of the development of a mine health and safety program in China from 1987 to 1996. The project was funded by the United Nations Development Program and managed by the International Labor Office (ILO). The objective was to strengthen the capability of the National Safety Training Center (NSTC), located near Beijing to train more than 2,000 engineers per year, and provide consulting and informational services to 39 safety training centers and coal mines. Presently China has the highest mortality rate in the world for coal mine operations, the greater incidence occurring at the many thousands of small, unlicensed underground mines.

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

Au mineralization in the Kilpwal Gold Mine is confined to laminated quartz-carbonate lodes and associated alteration along the Klipwal Shear Zone (KSZ) in the upper Mozaan Group of the Mesoarchaean Pongola Supergroup. The brittle-ductile shear zone is characterized by inner and proximal hydrothermal alteration domains that are comprised of chlorite, epidote, sericite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and gold. Possible sources of gold are: (i) paleo-placer U-Au rich conglomerates from the lower Mozaan Group; (ii) the underlying mafic volcanics of the Nsuze Group; (iii) greenstone belts in the basement to the Pongola basin. Post-Pongola granites probably provided the heat to mobilize auriferous fluids into the KSZ.

Based on extensive investigations on the effect of design variables on process performance, during 1982-85, Nordberg developed a 1000 hp cone crusher, with the objective of boosting crushing productivity in existing plants. The 2390 fits on the same foundation as the 7' SHD Symons cone, but is designed to give two times the capacity of the 7'. The economies of scale involved give the customer substantial cost savings. In this paper process performance of the Nordberg 2390 relative to the 7' SHD Symons cone, while crushing the same ore, will be presented. Also, implications of such a crusher scale-up to associated cost savings will be addressed.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

A ground penetrating synthetic pulse radar system has been used by the Bureau of Mines to probe into a coal pillar to locate hidden structures or anomalies. Two types of velocity tomographic reconstruction methods, direct matrix inversion and iterative, were used to obtain a velocity image of the interior of the pillar. The reconstructed image showed the existence and location of a relatively low velocity material within the pillar. Core samples were taken from the pillar in a region surrounding the low velocity material. Analysis of the cores showed the presence of a clay vein coinciding with the low velocity material imaged in the tomogram.

The work described herein is the opening phase of an extensive system of underground excavation undertaken under contract with a Malayan authority.The specifications called for the lining of all tunnels in earth or broken rock with circular segmented cast iron lining, similar to that of the London tubes, and it is the installation of these linings which it is proposed to discuss.Owing to the long deferred delivery quoted and the obvious need for speed of access to the internal installation, it was decided to defer driving the completed circular section and substitute two small timbered headings.These could later be opened out in turn to full section and lined without prejudice to traffic, since both of them had access to the internal workings.NATURE OF ROCKThe rock series through which the circular sections were driven consisted of:(a) A wide zone of intrusive porphyritic granite, consisting generally of orthoclase phenocrysts in a ground mass of micro pegmatite. This area showed advanced weathering, varying from a stage showing slightly tinted kaolin containing approximately 20% of small boulders to one of ultimate decomposition to pure kaolin;(b) A narrow zone of weathered augite diorite, consisting of rock masses of a maximum weight of some 100-150 tons, isolated by clay seams up to 1 ft. 6 in. in width.The whole area was in a state of quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium, which resulted in heavy pressure immediately after excavation. Freshly broken faces would appear to be quite solid but, within a few minutes, would commence to sweat and "slab off" under pressure and, unless support was placed promptly, the whole face would burst out and run from above. Mucking was slow, owing to the plastic nature of the clay and the ease with which it puddled into slurry.In zone (b) a good deal of trouble was experienced because of the fact that the somewhat heavy blasting necessary tended to cause movement of the large rock masses. Subsequent scouring out of the supporting clay bands by the waterflow permitted settlement of the ground on to the timbers and many reinforcing sets were therefore required.The timbering of the pilot headings and its relation to the cross-section of the circular tunnels is shown in Fig. 1. While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
