Because of the danger to life and property in a coal mine if an oil or natural gas well should be accidentally intersected during mining operations, certain precautionary measures should be carried out prior to entering previously unmined areas. The locations of all wells both at the surface and at the depth of the coalbed should be accurately determined. The condition of the well should be learned from surface observations, and more importantly, from subsurface examination by geophysical logging devices where possible. It is also desirable to learn the physical properties of the hydrocarbon-bearing rock formation and the hydrocarbon fluids. The major hazard presented by oil or natural gas wells to mining operations is that of explosion and fire due to the rapid release of gas into the mine atmosphere. Wellbore pressure, the principal index of danger, should be determined by one or more of the methods described and by a service company such as those listed in the appendix. Because of high pressures involved and the consequent hazard, much emphasis has been placed on underground storage of natural gas in areas containing minable coalbeds. Maps are shown of the principal coal producing areas and the locations of currently active gas storage reservoirs. A checklist has been included of factors to be considered when mining coal in an area where oil or gas wells exist.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a ventilation assessment for a recently established underground room-and-pillar stone mine implementing split-mine ventilation. The primary objective was to examine the impact of the length of the in-place stone stoppings on face ventilation efficiency. These stone stoppings serve to separate the intake and exhaust entries and align with the mining direction. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was utilized. The appropriate turbulence model was selected, and a mesh convergence analysis was conducted for the CFD model. Following that, the CFD model was validated using the conducted ventilation surveys. Two configurations of in-place stone stoppings, designated as Layout-I and Layout-II, were simulated using the validated CFD models. Layout-I featured a shorter in-place stone stopping, while Layout-II had a longer one. The results obtained from the CFD models demonstrated that the increased length of the in-place stone stopping in Layout-II resulted in a notable enhancement in ventilation efficiency at the advanced faces (last stopping), elevating it from 4% in Layout-I to 8.4% in Layout-II. However, no significant impact of the in-place stopping layouts was observed at other faces. In general, Layout-II exhibited a greater circulation of air at the outby stoppings.

WITHIN a very few years magnesium has sprung from oblivion, from classification as a technically unknown, little appreciated, and expensive material to front-page importance in many fields of engineering. Bunsen may be considered the real founder of our present magnesium industry. In 1852; he prepared this metal by the electrolysis of fused magnesium chloride in a porcelain crucible. In the following years the electro¬lytic process became recognized as superior to chemical reduction methods and Germany became the world's chief producer, installing the first electrolytic magnesium plant in 1886. ' Thirty years later, national defense requirements, occasioned by the outbreak of the World War and the cutting off of imports, caused France, England, and the United States to begin production. Most of this magnesium was used for military purposes so the close of the war resulted in a large curtailment in production. A few companies, however, encouraged by the early success of the Germans and by the rapid developments taking place in aeronautics, and confident in the certain future and ultimate value of this metal, undertook extensive re¬searches in its production and utilization. The aim of this work is to simulate the forming process of a green anode. For this purpose, a nonlinear compressible viscoelastic constitutive law is presented. The concept of natural reference configuration is considered. Within an isothermal thermodynamic framework, a Helmholtz free energy is proposed to take into account the nonlinear compressible deformation process occurring between natural reference configuration and current configuration. A dissipation potential is introduced in order to characterize the irreversible aspect of compaction process. Thus, the constitutive law is formulated through two equations: 1) an expression of Cauchy stress tensor and 2) a differential equation characterizing the evolution of the natural reference configuration. Material parameters are assumed to be a function of the bulk density. This allows capturing the micro-mechanical phenomena within the chosen macroscopic approach. An experimental study based on compaction tests is carried out in order to characterize the mechanical behaviour of the anode paste. A user's material VUMAT subroutine for finite element dynamic explicit analysis has been developed and implemented in the ABAQUS commercial software. To evaluate the model predictive capability, numerical simulations of the compaction forming process of anode paste were performed. Simulation results show that the constitutive law predicts the experimental trends and gives interesting physical responses. This constitutes a first step toward making a benchmark with experimental results on the forming process of anode paste.

"AbstractIn the separation of lead and zinc concentrates from the ore from Cominco's Sullivan mine at Kimberley, • B.C., an iron sulphide concentrate is also produced, some of which is roasted to provide sulphuric add for the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer. The iron oxide calcine from the roaster is potentially a valuable raw material for the production of pig iron and steel. To evaluate this material, six tons of .pig iron was produced from it in an experimental 75 k.w. electric furnace at Trail. The pig iron alone, and also in varying proportions with structural steel scrap and commercial pig iron, was used in the production of basic electric furnace steel at the Mines Branch Laboratories, Ottawa. Details are given of the steel making and fabrication procedure, of the visual and microscopic examination, and of the extensive series of tests on the steel produced. It was determined by the authors that the water that remains in the filter cake after filtration in iron ore concentrators can contain several hundred times greater concentrations of calcium ions and other cations, due to surface chemical effects carrying the ions along with the water. Filter cake from two plants was analyzed. The water retained in samples of magnetite concentrate filter cake in Plant 1 contained 5088 ppm calcium and 5995 ppm magnesium, while the Plant 2 filter cake contained 231 ppm calcium and 119 ppm magnesium. These levels were dramatically elevated compared to the water that was removed from the concentrate by filtration for recycle to the plants (9 ppm calcium/15 ppm magnesium for Plant 1, and 11.9 ppm calcium/9.3 ppm magnesium in Plant 2). In addition to possible effects on agglomeration performance, the presence of these cations also affected the efficiency of filtration. In order to reduce the effects of these cations on filtration in Plant 2, carbon dioxide was injected into the slurry before it entered the filter press. This was found to increase filtration rates by up to 23.7%. Comparison of the results from the two plants shows that the concentrations of cations present in the filter cake will vary greatly from plant to plant, with correspondingly large variations in their effects on plant operations.

The recent developments on the concentration and recovery of gold from leached gold thiosulfate solutions by solvent extraction, reduction-precipitation, and electrochemical deposition are reviewed in this paper. Alkyl phosphorus esters have been found to extract gold only in alkaline thiosulfate solutions, The recovery of gold increases with thiosulfate concentration in the aqueous phase and with alkyl phosphorus esters concentration in the organic phase with aliphatic hydrocarbon diluents. The addition of ammonia improves the extraction. The extraction of gold with amines in either aliphatic or aromatic diluent decreased in the following order: primary>secondary>tertiary amines. Increase in the extractant concentration at high pH increased the extraction of gold. At pH < 9, the primary amine, RR&apos;CHNH2 with 1&apos;9-23 carbon atoms is the main extractant with TBP as the synergistic reagent and at pH >9, the primary amine shows a synergistic effect on the extraction of gold&apos; with TBP. TheAu(I) ions in thiosulfate solution are reduced by sodium borohydride (SBH) to metallic gold, with particles in the sub micron range, At an SBH/ Au ratio of 6.25, pH = 6, and at room temperature, the I e ppm Au(I) in a solution of ] 0 gil thiosulfate was completely reduced to metallic gold in about 60 minutes.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world&apos;s economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, &apos; It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in&apos; the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act&apos; with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

The Cushion Blasting Technique applied to solve the high risk case history represented by a 10,704 TM rock locate at 120 M from the hydroelectrical plants of 350 KV each, is described, analyzed and discussed. The generation and distribution of 700 KV produced by two hydroelectrical plants must not be interrupted by any reason, because the 26 district of the province of cajatambo, of the Lima department; would not have electrical power. The search of the best alternative and methodology, the drilling and blasting pattern calculations, charge design and loading, connections and initiations of the 50 blasts are described, analyzed and discussed. Finally, the excellent results from a technical, economical, enviromental and safety point of view of the 50 primary blasts are discussed and emphasized.

INTRODUCTION GOLD-BEARING placers of Alaska and the Yukon Territories are buried under a layer of permanently frozen alluvial overburden, or &apos;muck&apos;, which varies in depth from twenty to one hundred feet. The placers, and the decomposed bedrock layers upon which they are deposited, are also permanently frozen. During the summer, surface muck which is exposed to the sun will thaw, but only to a depth of a few feet. To reach a valuable deposit, the frozen overburden must be either penetrated with shafts, or stripped from the deposit entirely. In either case, before the placer can be mined, it must be thawed. At modern dredging operations, the frozen muck is stripped from the placer by powerful jets of water from hydraulic giants. The placer, and several feet of decomposed bed-rock, are then thawed by forcing water through narrow pipes which have been driven into the deposit. Other methods of thawing frozen placers were used extensively during the early years of the Klondike &apos;gold rush&apos;, but experimentation later proved that creek water at its natural summer temperature was a more effective and economical thawing medium than any other which had been used. EVOLUTION OF COLD WATER THAWING Early prospectors of the far north reached placers by digging shafts through the frozen muck. They then thawed the placer sand and gravel by building wood fires at the bottom of the shafts.

Scrap iron is partially oxidized at elevated temperatures in the selective oxidation process to produce iron oxide and a dense residual metal of high purity. Investigation of the process was confined to converting automobile hulks into useful products. In one test series, compressed, sheared automobile scrap was processed at 1,000° C in a 36-foot-long rotary kiln at feed rates ranging from 300 to 1,200 lb/hr. Less fuel was required to maintain the temperature at the higher feed rates because of the heat generated from the burning of the combustibles and the oxidation of the iron. The bulk density of the residual metal exceeded 75 pounds per cubic foot. In an attempt to lower the quantity of contaminants in the residual metal, another test was designed using automobile hulks which had been prepared by ripping, a low-cost method of scrap fragmentation. Before oxidizing the ripped scrap approximately 62 percent of the total copper was removed in a tumbling, screening, magnetic separation and hand-sorting system. Cast iron made from the residual metal obtained by selective oxidation contained 0.15 percent copper; iron oxide scale obtained from the kiln averaged 0.13 percent copper. Pellets made from the scale demonstrated compressive strengths necessary for blast furnace reduction; lead and zinc were removed by volatilization when the induration was performed in a reducing atmosphere.

Abstract: To excavate oil-gas pipeline ditches in a rocky region or area the explosive method is needed. When a parallel ditch is to be dug by blasting near or in the vicinity of an existing pipeline, a safe criterion must be determined to ensure safety for the latter. In this investigation, with the construction of the second phase of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, we carried out real blasting tests and numerical simulations to explore the safety criteria for the existing pipeline. Through this investigation, we obtained the safe strain elasticity threshold es2000µe, blast vibration velocity calculation formula, and the maximum vibration velocity Vmax=14cm/s(5.51in./s) for the pipe under blast shock loading, and worked out how to determine the charge size in the follow-up blasting excavation. These results can be used to determine the maximum explosive weight per delay and decide delays for the initiation circuit network in blasting a parallel pipeline ditch, and to make safety assessments for the existing pipeline in service. Having successfully been applied in the second and third phases of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, China-Russia Oil Pipeline Project and China-Myanmar Gas Pipeline Project, these findings are very significant for other similar pipeline construction.

"IntroductionAT NORANDA, the strength of the ore and wall-rocks per-mitted mining in large open stopes. While some of the orebodies were small and could be mined out in one stope, in most cases their size was such that it was essential that ore pillars be left during the first stage of mining. In these cases, backfilling has been necessary for ground control and to facilitate the later recovery of the ore in these pillars.This paper discusses the development of the •backfill and •its use in pillar recovery.GeologyThe ore bodies at Noranda occur as replacement deposits in a block of rhyolite flows and breccias, bounded on the north by the Horne Creek fault and on the south by the Noranda Andesite fault. Mineralization consists of pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, gold, and various tellurides.The main orebody is a massive sulphide deposit designated the 'H' orebody. It is elliptical in plan, measuring roughly 400 feet by 800 feet, and is divided into two zones -Upper H, extending from surface to the 1,500-foot level, and Lower H, from the 1 ,500-foot level to just below the 3,000-foot level.Mining MethodsOpen stope mining in both Upper H and Lower H zones has been fully described in previous publications (1). A brief review only of the mining methods will be given here."

Hydriding properties and crystal structure of a Ti-V- Mn solid solution alloy have been studied by P-C isotherm measurements and neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. The absorption P-C isotherm at 298K shows two plateau regions at 0.01MPa and 1MPa. The X-ray diffraction data have demonstrated that three phases with a BCC, a pseudo-cubic FCC and an FCC structure form subsequently with increase of the hydrogen content. Crystal structure of the latter two phases has been determined by Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction data. The FCC phase is the di-hydride of CaF2 type with hydrogen occupation in the T sites. The pseudo-cubic FCC phase is the mono-hydride of NaCl-type with hydrogen occupation in the 0 sites, which has not been reported so far. The lattice constants of the mono-hydride (Ti1.0V1.1Mn0.9)H_2.7 are a&apos;=0.407 nm for two axes and c&apos;=0.390 nm for the third axis. The a&apos;axis is shorter by 4% than the c&apos;axis. This pseudo-cubic FCC lattice is formed by contraction of 5% of the a axis and expansion of about 30% of the c axis from the original BCC lattice.

Grouting has been used in underground mining for more than twenty years. Chemical grouting is often used as a remedial measure when the implemented ground control program is unable to completely prevent structural failures or when there is a need for preventing a structural member from unraveling. Utilization of the polyurethane grout currently being used is restricted by its limited range of physical and mechanical properties that restrict its utilization. To overcome some of the drawbacks of polyurethane, research has been conducted on a newly developed polyester based grout. The polyester resin, identified by Sandvik as StrataGrip, provides a number of features, including variable gel times and much reduced chemical hazard. Equally important are the mechanical properties of the product. The strength and deformability of any chemical grout must be compatible with the intended purpose of grouting and the expected deformation of the rock that is to be grouted. Assessment of the mechanical properties of polyester grout is the focus of this work. Field experiences and laboratory research have defined the properties of an effective grouting material. Experimental results indicate that the polyester grout meets or exceeds the recommended properties for many injection applications. Furthermore, the results suggest that the ability to adjust mechanical properties via resin formulation has the potential to expand the applicability of chemical grouting in ground control.

A mathematical model was developed considering non-symmetric cooling' and stress distribution in both thickness and width direction of strip on a run-out table of hot strip mill. In order to solve a transient heat transfer equation including the heat evolved from phase transformation, a finite element method coupled with thermodynamic and kinetic analyses was applied. The heat capacity of each phase and heat evolution due to phase transformation were obtained from the thermodynamic analysis of the Fe-C-Mn-Si system based on a sub lattice model. The phase transformation kinetics of the steels was derived by using an inverse additivity technique with continuous cooling experiments. Heat transfer coefficients of strips on the run-out table were, by applying an inverse method, determined from the actual mill data under various cooling conditions. As for the stress analysis, the density change of strip due to cooling and phase transformation, and the transformation superplasticity were considered. A 90nstitutive equation for the transformation superplasticity, which is related to the phase transformation kinetics and the internal stress due to the density change of strip, was applied. A finite element method was adopted to calculate the deformation behaviour of strip on a run-out table of hot strip mill. Using the models, the temperature-phase-deformation history and distribution of a strip on the run-outtable was calculated.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. Iluka Resources Ltd developed the Jacinth-Ambrosia Mine (Jacinth) in the Eucla Basin during 2009 and 2010. In this arid climate the operation relies on hyper-saline groundwater from a palaeochannel for process and potable water supplies. The water is hyper-saline, acidic and mildly reducing, with high ferrous iron concentrations. Ferrolysis commences on exposure of water to oxygen, resulting in increased acidity and the conversion of dissolved ferrous iron to insoluble ferrihydrite. The unstable groundwater forces a careful balance between interventions relating to maintaining pipeline efficiency, corrosion protection and processing aspects. Providing an oxidising environment at the head of the pipeline will result in the precipitation of akaganenite and goethite in the pipeline, which over time reduces pipeline efficiency. However, sending too much ferrous iron forward may reduce processing performance.The processing plant experiences changes in water chemistry in response to the variability of iron concentrations and pH within the pipeline, and the spatial and chemical variability of ore. As the main orebody at Jacinth contains little buffering capacity a source of carbonate in the overburden is carefully used to allow the cost-effective control of process water pH.This paper highlights the importance of understanding the chemistry of saline make-up water, ore, and overburden when designing water treatment facilities and heavy mineral processing facilities.

If you would allow me some liberties, I would re-state the title of this talk as Scientific Research, Our Greatest Resource, because that title would represent more clearly a present-day conception of the metals and minerals situation. It is a subject worthy of careful consideration. Canada and the United States are so similar and interdependent in their national economies that, in the following discussion, examples of conditions in the United States may? be interpreted to apply to Canada as well. Moreover, it is a striking fact that the per capita value of mineral production in Canada and the United States in 1940 was almost the same. Therefore, in the consideration of this subject, I have made no attempt to differentiate between the two countries. The consumption of the world&apos;s mineral resources in the last few decades, and particularly during World War II, has been so enormous as to require some form of magic to ensure the continued progress of civilization in the face of a diminishing supply of these resources which are so critically essential. As Dr. C. K. Leith pointed out in 1941, industrial expansion has been so great that, during the first forty years of this century, the world used more of its mineral recourses than in all preceding history. And this did not include the all-out consumption during the succeeding five years of war.
