A multimine mineral value chain (MVC) consists of multiple mines in the upstream supplying raw materials to multiple destinations in the downstream. The short-term mine production scheduling problem of a multimine MVC aims to determine the optimal extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively to meet the quality and quantity requirements of all the processing plants in each period, subject to all relevant technical and operational constraints of the mining system. It is carried out at shorter scales of days/weeks/months under the purview of long-term production scheduling. An optimal short-term production schedule for MVC involving multiple mines that share the same infrastructure (processing units, stockpiles and waste dumps) requires coordination across the network of mines. Optimizing the short-term production schedules independently at each mine fails to capture the benefit of collaboratively generating schedules for all the mines, resulting in suboptimal schedules. Additionally, in short-term production scheduling, the operations are modeled in greater detail with additional decision variables and constraints to model the more complex multimine MVC situations. This makes the large-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. This work presents a customized genetic algorithm (GA)-based heuristic approach to obtain near-optimal solutions to the industrial-scale instances of the short-term production scheduling problem of multimine MVC within a reasonable computation time.

During the ten year span from 1978 to 1987, the number of fires which occurred in under-ground coal mines doubled from the previous ten years. Anyone involved with underground coal mines is well aware of the associated tragedy that can result from these fires, both to personnel and to property. Every day mine management and mining personnel face this threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. As a direct result of the ever-increasing interest in the Mine Emergency Preparedness Program and the Mine Fire Training Programs currently being conducted, the Emergency Preparedness Center was created. As a branch of the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University, the Center provides preparedness training at several different levels on a varying range of topics. Classes are conducted at a new especially-designed training laboratory at the National Mine Safety & Health Academy in West Virginia. By maintaining the proper equipment and levels of training allowing for immediate response, the personnel who are part of the Center believe that the impact of a mine fire or other such emergency situation can be minimized. This paper will present recommendations for maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness program and will provide information regarding the Mine Fire Training Program as conducted by the Emergency Preparedness Center and describe the advantages of the newly constructed training facility.

Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corporation (GCMC) operates a circular DC electric smelting furnace to treat nickel and cobalt bearing residues at its plant in Freeport, Texas. The furnace, originally built by others, has experienced problems including runouts through the hearth and the lower sidewall. Hatch has designed several improvements to the furnace to alleviate these problems. The single anode at the centre of the hearth was replaced with a patented system of twelve air-cooled copper anodes evenly spaced around the furnace lower sidewall. The DC power supply comprises two transformers and two rectifiers operating in parallel. The water-cooling system on the bottom and lower sidewall shell plates was replaced with an air-cooling system using copper cooling fins. The existing row of water-cooled copper coolers in the metal bath zone was re-designed for greater heat removal capacity and better element joint sealing, and a new row of water-cooled copper coolers was added to cool both the alumina bath and freeboard zones. The existing water-cooled metal and alumina tapblocks were also re-designed for more robust cooling. A binding system was added to provide refractory compression that reduces the risk of liquid leaks. Finally, the furnace tilting frame was relocated to the top of the furnace where it is less likely to be damaged.

The Eighteenth International Symposium on the Appli¬cation of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries was held in London from 26th to 30th March, 1984. The Symposium was organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy under the leadership of Mr M.J. Cahalan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The venue chosen was the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, in South Kensington. Some 300 delegates from all parts of the world attended, which included a delegation from South Africa that numbered about 20 persons. This extremely successful series of international meet¬ings was begun in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona, and has grown in strength and importance over the years. The arrange¬ment of the symposia is regulated by the International Council for APCOM under the Chairmanship of Professor R.V. Ramani (U.S.A.), the other current members being Professor J. Elbrond (Canada), Dr Thys B. Johnson (U.S.A.), Professor Young C. Kim (U.S.A.), Professor D.G. Krige (R.S.A.), Professor A.J. Lynch (Australia), Professor C.T. Shaw (U.K.), Dr A. Weiss (U.S.A.), and Professor F.L. Wilke (F.R.G.). There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and dedication of this small group of people and the excellent working relationship that exists between them are responsible for the continued success of APCOM meetings.

Montana's coal reserves are estimated to be more than 120 billion tons, 24.6 percent of U.S. reserves. Montana's reserves are the largest in the nation. Coal fields are located throughout the state, primarily east of the Continental Divide. Three of the state's 17 coal fields have producing mines. Coal resources range from lignite to high volatile bituminous; however, most of the coal currently mined is subbituminous. Although Lewis and Clark mentioned the presence of coal along the banks of the Missouri River in Montana in 1805, the first major mine was not opened until 1867, at Chestnut, Montana, near Bozeman. The mine at Chestnut served Fort Ellis until the mine was bought by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. By 1900, underground coal mining had developed throughout the state, primarily to supply fuel to the railroads. In the 1920s, large-scale surface mining began in Colstrip to fuel railroad steam engines. Currently, all coal mined in the state is produced from surface mines. The Office of Surface Mining granted the Montana regulatory program conditional approval April 1, 1980, followed by final approval February 1 1,1982. Montana's Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved November24,1980, and its emergency program was approved August 18, 1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was approved May 8, 1981.

THE so-called Kick law' is generally accepted to . mean that for each reduction to one-half in particle diameter, in a unit weight, the same amount of work is required. In crushing-efficiency calculations on crushing tests it is customary, when basing the calculation on Kick's law, to assign ordinal numbers to each standard sieve size. These ordinal numbers increase by a constant difference with each successive sieve aperture, because standard sieve apertures are in constant ratio. Minus 200-mesh is generally assumed as equivalent to 37 microns in size. By definition, the ordinal number multiplied by the per cent material of any size is equal to the energy units in the material of that size in a unit weight of sample. The sum of all energy units is the energy units content of a unit weight of sample, whether it be crusher feed or product. The difference between the energy units in the product and that in the feed is the tangible result of the work input per unit weight of feed. From this the amount of work necessary for one energy unit may be calculated. This has been done for a quartz crushing-test made at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, in which the net work going to crushing was carefully measured. The results of this crushing test are given in Table 1.'

The first industrial application of direct solvent extraction of nickel from hypersaline sulfate feed solutions has highlighted the need to investigate the influence of chloride on the extraction behaviour nickel in the presence of calcium using Versatic 10 and the solubility characteristics of gypsum. Temperature-solubility curves for gypsum in various aqueous electrolytes were prepared. The solubility of gypsum is increased significantly by the presence of sulfate ions, while chloride ions decrease it for a given temperature. The anion effects of chloride and sulfate on the extraction of calcium and nickel by Versatic 10 corresponded well with the complexing ability of the anions. It was shown that the presence of chloride shifts the extraction isotherms for both metals significantly to the left, while decreasing the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium. The loading of nickel onto Versatic 10 in this system was shown to be at a maximum within 3 seconds, while calcium extraction took between 4 ? 5 seconds to load to a maximum. Chloride ions had no influence on loading kinetics of nickel, but depressed the rate of calcium loading. It was shown that in the presence of an excess of nickel, calcium loading is effectively eliminated, and that calcium is scrubbed from Versatic 10 within 2.5 seconds of contact with nickel electrolyte.

On the bulk basis New York's contribution to the production of oil is small, representing, as it does, a bare half of one per cent of the annual total for the United States. Yet it has more importance than is implied by such a statement. Petroleum includes a variety of organic compounds, some more and some less valuable. It would be a fairer estimate of the situation to say that New York in recent years has produced around 10 to 12 per cent on the average of all Pennsylvania grade oil, the supply of which is strictly limited and the demand steady even in times of overproduction of other grades. One may not infer from this that New York and other Appalachian states enjoy an independent position in the market with a price structure uninfluenced by that of the Mid-Continent, Gulf or California fields. On the other hand, the recent market demoralization in the South and West brought about by uncontrolled production caused prices to drop to a point where the life of the local industry was seriously threatened. The current cost of producing oil in New York under the methods of water-flooding, by which most of the output is now obtained, has been estimated by competent authority at not less than $2.50 a barrel. This paper considers the standard of ore reserve assessments required by lenders when presented to support requests for project based loans. The way lenders use this information to structure a suitable financial package shows why ore reserves should be measured by industry set standards. This in turn raises questions concerning the assumptions used to derive mineable reserves from geological reserves. Consideration of the variety of related problems highlights the need for assessments to be defined according to acceptable standards. These should also address the suitability of the methodology to the assumed configuration of the orebody; the degree of variance and relaibility of estimates of grade and tonnage presented; and the estimation of probability that ore will in practice fall within the defined limits. In an increasingly international marketplace it is appropriate to compare Australian industry requirements to those of similar overseas industries, in this case the United States. Lenders would like to see that individuals responsible for the preparation of ore reserve estimates are certified on the basis of their skill and expereince by an industry body such as The AusIMM. The paper discusses how each of the parameters indicated above may impact upon a lender's assessment of the viability of a project. A number of practical examples are presented where inaccuracies or inadequacies in ore reserve information have led to reduced project performance.

"Owing to environmental constraints, safety considerations and competitive pressures, the development of model-based process control and other automated systems have experienced considerable growth in the last few decades. Reliable process models are usually critical to the successful implementation of these systems. In complex processes, these models are often constructed from process data, as modelling from first principles may not be feasible or cost-effective.Even so, modelling or identification of nonlinear systems from historic plant data can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated by the presence of noise from various sources, nonstationarity of the data, intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows, etc. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear modelling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of nonlinear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems.With singular spectrum analysis, the data are embedded in a high-dimensional reconstruction, followed by the introduction of a new coordinate system, where the origin is moved to the centroid of the reconstructed system states and the axes are represented by the dominant principal components of the states (points)."

Although unproven, it is suspected that there have been eleven locations since 1988 where explosive generated carbon monoxide (CO) gas moved through the earth and accumulated in nearby underground enclosed spaces. This paper summarizes the incidents, which involved about 30 suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and 1 fatality. Ten incidents occurred in residences and one occurred in a manhole. Although practically nothing is known about the mechanism behind the suspected gas migration, review of the incidents and available information indicates there are certain warning signs and a successful remediation technique available. In each case, overburden heavily confined the explosive in the blasts, preventing release of explosive-generated gases to the atmosphere. All the blasts were in residential areas, and none were excavated immediately. Where the distance from the blast was recorded, 5 of the blasts were within 20 to 50 feet (ft) (6 to 15 meters [m]) of the underground enclosed spaces, 3 were 100 to 150 ft (30 to 46 m) away, and 1 was 400 to 500 ft (120 to 150 m) away. Investigators often identified suspected pathways from the blast site into the underground enclosed spaces. One technique appeared successful at quickly correcting an existing condition. This technique involved applying negative pressure to the earth and removing the CO from the ground surrounding the underground enclosed space.

"Data from the South Fork Pit Area of the Bullmoose deposit in northeastern British Columbia are used to demonstrate the usefulness of microcomputers to the on-site geologist. The technique utilizes a series of digital surf aces in the form of a network of points to define various geologic parameters such as seam positions, topography and coal quality characteristics. Manual digitizing, kriging and combinations of these techniques are used to calculate these digital surfaces, the best method depending upon the type and quality of the data in question. Digital surfaces, each modelling a specific feature when combined and manipulated with the computer form a powerful tool, the deposit model. The resultant model, containing all the surfaces, is used to examine seam and inter-seam thicknesses, deposit volumetrics, seam quality characteristics and the adequacy of sampling.IntroductionCoal deposit modelling using computer-based techniques has become routine. However, a geologist working in the field, without access to mainframe or minicomputer, ha s considerable difficulty implementing these procedures. However, microcomputers, which are portable and inexpensive can handle exploration data, perform various geological analyses, and produce deposit models virtually at the same time as the data is being collected. For the on-site geologist this means that quick access to the results of such modelling could point out inadequacies in deposit definition and trends in coal quality deserving investigation."

R. T. Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—Two schools of thought are developing concerning the order of the rate of flotation. The paper by Morris is intended to show experimental evidence in favor of the first order rate. Arbiter, on the other hand, has presented an earlier paper" to demonstrate the validity of the second order rate equation. Unfortunately his method of plotting is open to criticism, as pointed out by Morris." A more sensitive method of plotting has been described by the writer,= whereby the data presented by Arbiter demonstrate the superiority of the second order plot. Besides the question of the stability of the roof and walls, one of the main problems encountered with tunnelling and shaft-sinking through the soft ground of alluvial origin forming the sub-grade of most large towns is settlement. Public transport and road tunnels in town centres are particularly affected, as they cannot generally be designed at any great depth for several reasons, such as the fact that ventilation shafts and access to the surface by means of stairs, escalators, lifts, ramps and so on must be fitted into the limited space available and are therefore costly, and because of the difficulties of driving below the water table. It is for this reason, coupled with the need for wide radius curves, that tunnels now so often pass close under buildings and monuments which must not be exposed to any risk of damage from subsidence during excavation. Grouting is the usual method used for consolidating soils, improving their strength and making them less compressible, but it is itself liable to cause heaving and cracks in the buildings above and has many other attendant dangers, including continually revised estimates which are the reason for the often inordinately high costs met with in urban tunnelling to-day. Nowadays, hard carbides have found various industrial application in the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools as well as metal forming devices. About 60% of the world tungsten production is consumed in the manufacture of hard carbide pieces. Regarding the high economic value of hard carbide components, i.e., Ni, Co, TaC, TiC, and WC, their recovery from scrap species is attracting much interest. In the current research, the cobalt and tungsten content were recovered from scrap cemented carbide pieces through the application of high voltage electrolysis in nitric acid media. By this method, cobalt and tungsten were initially recovered as cobalt nitrate and tungstic acid, respectively. The precipitate of tungstic acid was calcined at 800ºC after being washed twice with distilled water. A pure tungstic oxide was obtained. The effects of current density, electrolyte concentration, speed of agitation, and the surface area of the anode on the efficiency of the electrolysis process were investigated. The optimum conditions of current density of 1500 A/m2, an acid concentration of 1.5 M, and a cell temperature in the vicinity of 60 to 80ºC were obtained. At the optimum conditions, an acceptable rate of collapse for the anodic carbide pieces of about 3.1 g/h was achieved, which remained constant up to the completion of the recovery process without any passivation .

At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. "Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres.The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 19505 and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. In recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors. There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

A study on fauna distribution and abundance is being conducted in the Giona Mountain, in central Greece, area of bauxite mining. The specific aims of the study are: a) to estimate and map the distribution of mammals, and especially of the Balkan chamois, b) to estimate and map the distribution and abundance of breeding birds, c) to count the bird species using the area during spring and autumn migration and winter, d) to update the list of mammal and bird species of the mountain, with emphasis on rare and endangered ones, according to 79/409, 92/43 EU Directives and other relevant conventions, e) to compare the bauxite mining areas and species distribution and assess the possible overlap and compatibility of mining activities - species conservation, f) to assess the possible habitat loss due to planned mining activities. All estimations of mammal species distribution and abundance are being carried out by fieldwork using spotlight during the night along selected routes. Especially for chamois, line transects and vantage points with the aid of telescopes and binoculars are being used. Birds are being counted with the point count method in randomly selected plots distributed in all available habitat types and altitudes. The species distribution and mining areas will appear on thematic maps with the aid of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, solutions for environmentally compatible mining activity in the area will be proposed.

The conservation movement, initiated during the time of Gifford Pinchot and Theodore Roosevelt, has gradually taken hold of the popular imagination of the American people; and today, although it is little understood, it is an accepted doctrine. But the subject should not degenerate into cheap and misleading publicity. In the wise development and use of human and material resources lies the answer (Fig. 4). Conservation does not mean the parsimonious and misguided avarice of the miser, but the prudent and intelligent use of all types of resources, and the opening of a way for the use of those potentialities that lie just beyond the horizon and wait for man's constructive efforts to make them available. Conservation consists essentially in not emptying the pools of primary wealth before the minds of men, guided by ingenious research, have found ways to replenish them from sources as yet untapped. To advance successfully along this path, man should be guided by science and by a decent understanding of his obligations to his fellow man and particularly to his children and his children's children. Two pathways branch from this general road. One is the restraining of those spendthrifts who would throw away our national heritage for the sake of a cheap and irresponsible enjoyment of the present.
