"Given the results of triaixial tests, regressions are commonly used to evaluate the parameters of failure criteria that model intact rock strength and to perform statistical inferences used to evaluate characteristic values defined in EC7. Statistical robustness of these inferences is affected if the basic hypothesis underlying regression are not met, namely homoscedasticity (constant variance of the errors). This paper presents analyses of 23 sets of triaxial tests, starting by the evaluation of the regression parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb linear criterion and of the Hoek-Brown non-linear criterion, followed by carrying several statistical tests to check the homoscedasticity null hypothesis of independence between the variance of intact rock strength and the confining stress.INTRODUCTIONThough rock engineering design is clearly included in the scope of Eurocode 7(EN1997-1), its implementation raised a wide discussion regarding the applicability of structural safety concepts to geotechnical design of construction works in or on rock masses. The basis of the limit state design philosophy adopted in EC7 is that, for each particular design situation, all the possible limit states for a structure, or part of it, shall be considered and that it shall be demonstrated that the likelihood of any limit state being exceeded is sufficiently small. Though EC7 allows the limit states to be verified by one or a combination of methods, use of calculations is by far the most used, and it is often confused with the EC7 itself. It involves using characteristic values of actions, ground properties and geometrical data, as well as obtaining their design values by the partial factor method.Characteristic value of a given material property is defined in Eurocode (EN 1990) as: “value of a material or product property having a prescribed probability of not being attained in a hypothetical unlimited test series. This value generally corresponds to a specified fractile of the assumed statistical distribution of the particular property of the material or product”. As regards the design value of a material or product property, according to the Eurocode it is a “value obtained by dividing the characteristic value by a partial factor”."

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

"Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects will add 6.75 miles (10.9 km) of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system, extending the route north from downtown Seattle. The tunnels are being constructed primarily in glacial soils using pressurized-face tunnel boring machines. Cover over the tunnel alignment varied from 13 feet to over 300 feet (4–91 m). Since the tunnels are located in densely populated urban areas, controlling ground movements and monitoring settlement were essential to success of these projects. Hundreds of geotechnical instruments, including extensometers, surface settlement points, and near-surface settlement points, were used in both projects to monitor settlement. The observed data were compared to settlement predictions made prior to tunneling, and analyses performed to update empirical factors to better estimate settlements. Recommendations for designing efficient and cost-effective settlement monitoring programs are provided based on the review of the monitoring data and analyses.INTRODUCTIONThe paper includes data from Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects. These projects will add 6.75 miles of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system. The tunneling for University Link will extend the light rail system from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. Tunneling from downtown Seattle to the Capitol Hill Station was completed under the U230 contract, and tunneling from the Capitol Hill Station to the University of Washington Station was completed under the U220 contract. The Northgate Link extension will extend the light rail line north of the University of Washington, including approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of twin tunnels between the University of Washington Station and the Maple Leaf Portal and two stations, U District Station and Roosevelt Station. Tunneling for the Northgate Link project is still underway as part of the N125 project. At the time of writing, tunneling from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station has been completed. Therefore data labeled as N125 in this paper only include the portion of the alignment from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station."

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

"The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. With the introduction of ever-stricter environmental operating guidelines, capital expenditure restrictions and operational budget cutbacks, the biological method of SO2 removal becomes more and more attractive. Biological treatment of dilute flue gases is a more cost effective technology in comparison to conventional sodium hydroxide scrubbing. Although the investment costs for sodium hydroxide scrubbing is lower, the operational costs are significantly higher. In addition, the end product of the biological installation is sulfur instead of sodium sulfate; and no further wastewater treatment of the bleed from the biological installation is required since heavy metals are removed simultaneously. Another option for the treatment of SO2 containing gas at a sulfuric acid plant is the production of extra sulfuric acid of the discharged SO2 by applying an additional converter. Comparing biological treatment with this option shows much lower investment costs for the biological installation. Sulfur is produced which can be converted to sulfuric acid, so the bio-route will be more cost-effective than an additional converter. In principle, the biotechnological gas cleaning system is an integration of an absorber with a wastewater treatment facility. In the absorber, the SO2 containing gas is brought into contact with the washing water. The effluent absorber liquid contains a mixture of sulfite and sulfate that is converted into elemental sulfur. This conversion takes place in an integrated system; first, the sulfite/sulfate mixture is converted anaerobically into sulfide; secondly, the sulfide is converted aerobically into elemental sulfur. Subsequently the sulfur is separated and the water is returned to the absorber. Due to the buffer capacity of the washing water, removal efficiencies over 98% are possible. In addition to SO2 removal, it is possible to convert for example other bleeds streams such as scrubber acid or weak acid to sulfur in the same SO2 installation. Recent evaluations concluded that biological desulphurization of flue gases is not only economically attractive in comparison to convention sodium hydroxide scrubbing but also in comparison to gypsum producing systems and even seawater scrubbers. This paper describes the technological and economical viability of biological flue gas desulphurization.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. "In this paper we present the results of a combined remote sensing - numerical modelling study to improve our understanding of groundwater seepage in open pit and natural rock slopes, and to investigate the interaction between groundwater, in-situ stress conditions and brittle fracture. The location of seepage is a key element in the characterisation of rock slope stability in open pits and natural slopes; definition of the fracture network geometry and its inter-relationship with seepage, however, remains a challenge in engineering practice. Current techniques used to characterize groundwater seepage locations require direct access to the rock slope for a detailed and exhaustive investigation, and can be severely limited due to access and the limited coverage of the survey methods both with respect to the height and length of the sampled rock slope. Herein, we describe remote sensing methods, which allow the collection of structural and seepage information over a wide spatial area. Remote sensing techniques are shown to have the potential to provide additional insights into the orientation and general connectivity of fractures that may play a major role in the general stability of a rock slope. A preliminary methodology for the use of remote sensing in the characterization of seepage zones in a natural slope through the application of ground-based LiDAR and Infrared Thermography (IRT) is presented.One of the most challenging problems in rock slope engineering is the realistic simulation of fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes. Deformation and the development of brittle fractures can cause significant local changes in the permeability and strength of the rock mass, potentially affecting rock slope performance. Understanding fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes, especially in highly-stressed environments is of great importance for slope stability analysis. Changes in the interconnectivity of fractures during slope failure are an important, yet are relatively unstudied in rock slope engineering. We present the results of hydromechanical UDEC-Trigon rock slope models focussing on the potential role of brittle fracture in rock slope failure, its interaction with groundwater pressures, and the influence of the assumed in-situ stress ratio. Damage intensity parameters are used to characterize damage within different regions of a biplanar slope failure."

"INTRODUCTION Zinc must be of high grade to satisfy the present demand. Even when the amount of premium paid is small, the purer metal as the buyers' preference. The following specifications for spelter were taken from the American Society for Testing Materials for 1927, Part I, pane 524. (The specifications for 1930, p. 582, are tile same.)Another specification for zinc of a much higher grade than any of the above has been established lately by the same society. The committee on zinc die-casting (Proc. Am. Soc. Test. Mat., vol. 31, 1931, p. 263) reached the following, conclusions: I. ""That the purest of zinc is necessary to produce stable zinc-base die castings, and as a result requested specifications for zinc spelter .with total impurities not over 0.02 percent."" Their tests showed that the die castings made of the purest zinc had the least elongation and the greatest tensile strength, and exhibited the least changes with temperature.Still more far-reaching claims are made for the properties of zinc containing over 99.99 percent metal. Zinc foil, for instance, may someday be made as a common commercial product. It would seem likely that the demand for zinc of high grades rill continue and that even purer varieties may be desired. This demand fits in with the modern trend in manufacturing plants of reducing the number of variables to a minimum by using pure materials, and of controlling the processing of metals during their various stages of fabrication by mechanical means instead of by expert laborers."

A 17-acre landslide occurred in February 2001, on a slope below Via Bellota in the City of San Clemente, California. Three homes were destroyed and many others placed in jeopardy. The landslide, involving portions of five separate developments, continued to move significantly in the years following. Litigation ensued among the affected parties, and investigations continued through 2007. A mediated repair resolution was ultimately reached among the parties. The agreed upon repair consists of a multi-million dollar stabilization program that included grading, drainage, and structural systems. Part of the construction cost was offset by creating 4 new ocean view custom lots and 20 new mobile home lots. The landslide repair and slope stabilization design involved removal and replacement of portions of the landslide debris and construction of buttress and stabilization fills as well as installation of 74 shear pins in two rows. The shear pins were designed as 4-foot diameter by 50 feet in length and incorporated continuous W30x211 wide flange steel. The shear pins were designed to be installed 25 feet above the slide plane and 25 feet below the slide plane at each location. Construction of the 74 shear pins was initiated in 2008 and completed in 2009. Four-foot diameter holes were drilled by utilizing a truck-mounted, flight-auger-style drilling rig with a 4-foot diameter solid-flight auger. Prior to the installation of the shear pins, an engineering geologist downhole logged strategically selected holes to further evaluate the actual slide plane elevations. The wide flange steel shear pins were then lowered to the desired elevations and encased within 4,500 psi, Type V, 0.45 maximum water/cement ratio concrete. Inclinometers installed within four pin shafts and behind the pin rows indicated performance in accordance with the design. Slight to non-perceivable shear displacement was measured which mobilized the intended capacity at the monitored shear pins. No excessive slope movement was detected at any of the inclinometer locations during or after the construction period. Actual shear displacement of the steel wide flange elements was less than the movement anticipated before shear pin installation.

"Since 2010, North Central Resources, Bridgeport, WV, has been using the sonic log to estimate the rockmechanics properties of the coal and adjacent strata in their exploration drilling program. In 68 out of the 85 boreholes they have drilled since 2010, they have conducted shear wave analysis on sonic logs run in these boreholes. By incorporating the rock mechanics logs into the geological model of the coal seam, the engineers can develop a better understanding of the support requirements for the mine.WellCAD Borehole processing software provides vastly improved efficiency in analyzing shear waves from borehole sonic data than previously available methods. The calculation of most rock mechanics parameters requires knowledge of the density and both the compressional wave velocity and the shear wave velocity. Density logs are well known and an industry standard. Sonic logging is equally well known, although less frequently used, as an accurate source of compressional wave velocity. Shear wave velocity is difficult to measure in a geophysical log, but can be estimated from digitally recorded wave form records. This is a time consuming manual procedure which requires the visual examination of thousands of individual wave forms.WellCAD allows the viewing all the wave forms on a VDL display. The observer can create a pair of false logs by manually tracing the interference points on the display for each receiver. He can check himself by observing wave forms in the traditional format. He can then create a shear wave transit time log or “Delta-S” log by subtracting the false log from the near receiver from that of the far receiver. This can be plugged into standard formulae to generate curves for most standard rock mechanic parameters, including bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio.While these parameters do not entirely substitute for destructive testing, they are extremely cost effective. An entire borehole can be analyzed for the cost of a single destructive test. This allows for a more judicious use of destructive testing while permitting the extension of test data into the rock mass with much greater confidence."

This investigation was conducted jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to obtain further information on the source and economic possibilities of the copper mineralization exposed on the Copper Giant group of claims, Ajo mining district, Pima County, Ariz. The Copper Giant group of claims was first brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Joseph Hunter (deceased), Phoenix, Ariz., part owner of the claims. In December 1942 these claims, and an adjoining group, were investigated by T. C. Denton, mining engineer, formerly with the Bureau of Mines, and Nels P. Peterson, geologist, Federal Geological Survey. It was concluded the area could not be considered as a source of copper for immed- iate emergency needs and that further investigation of the area, at the time, was not warranted. In the spring of 1948 the lessee, J. H. Greenway Albert, requested Bureau of Mines assistance in developing the property. J. H. Hedges, former chief, Tucson Branch, Mining Division, and Lincoln A. Stewart, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, made a cursory examination of the property and noted that at numerous places, low-grade copper mineralization appeared on fractures and bedding of the Locomotive fanglomerate and Ajo volcanics, which are thought to be of Tertiary age. During the period of May 11 through 14, 1949, Bureau of Mines engineers3 mapped and sampled two areas of mineral- ization. On June 2 and 3, 1949, the areas selected by the Bureau and three other nearby mineralized areas were investigated by C. A. Anderson and R. S. Cannon, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey. As a result of these examina- tions, further investigation of certain areas was believed to be merited. The Copper Giant area was selected as the most favorable in which to carry out exploratory and development work. The field work on the project was started in October 1949 and completed in December 1949. It consisted of road building, trenching, sampling, topo- graphic and geologic mapping, diamond drilling, and logging of core. Samples taken on the project and during preliminary examinations totaled 64, of which 63 were surface samples. Diamond drilling, started October 10 and completed December 7, consisted of two holes for a total depth of 1,542 feet.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Introduction In August 1977, the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain . . . and other physical conditions in areas subject to mining operations, the primary governmental responsibility for developing. authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environmental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall require the operator to adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence. causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining." This section raises many questions. Precisely what is the "reasonably foreseeable" future as far as land use is concerned? And what is the "standard method of room and pillar mining"? The first part of the paragraph seems to rule out longwall mining, but isn't longwalling a "predictable" manner of "planned subsidence"? Does the Act take into account variations among mining methods in differing regions or coal seams? With these questions and the need to comply with the Act's provisions in mind, many states may turn to the Pennsylvania Bituminous Mine Subsidence Act of 1966- the only comprehensive subsidence act passed by any state-as a model for their own programs. Thus, it is very important to evaluate Pennsylvania's Act to see whether its basic assumptions can accommodate national application. This paper will note the Subsidence Act's provisions and guidelines, briefly analyze the current state-of-the-art in subsidence damage prevention and control, and list several recommendations for altering the Act's application guidelines for different mining areas.

"As part of a major diversification project, RHI AG, through its plant in Drogheda Ireland, has developed a Caustic Calcined Magnesium Oxide (CCM) for use in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry. In the course of the project, the company investigated the chemical and physical properties of a number of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy applications and has been able to determine the important parameters for a successful Magnesia for this application. A number of live plant trials have confirmed the results of this testwork and the company is now proceeding to produce this product in commercial quantities at Premier Periclase Ltd., the RHI AG plant in Drogheda, Ireland. This paper will outline the development work conducted by the company and highlight the important chemical and physical properties that make a successful CCM. Much of the research was conducted at the RHI Technology Centre in Leoben, Austria. In addition, a number of external laboratory studies were conducted on behalf of RHI AG. The result of this work has allowed the company to develop a Magnesia product with optimised properties for use in the Cobalt and Nickel hydrometallurgical extraction process.INTRODUCTION Premier Periclase is part of RHI AG, a globally operating supplier of refractory products, systems and services, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The company produces Magnesia from seawater at its plant in Drogheda, Ireland. While the main focus is on production of refractory grade Dead Burned Magnesia for the steel industry, the plant also produces a number of different grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia as well as Magnesium Hydroxide products. As part of a major project to diversify the company’s product base, the use of CCM in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry was investigated. One of the company’s highly reactive grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia was found to be particularly suitable for this application. In an effort to understand what makes a successful Magnesia for hydrometallurgy the chemical and physical properties of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy were investigated. This paper and conference presentation outlines the findings of this process."

"Two instrumented test piles were simultaneously subjected to a static lateral load test by jacking the piles apart. One of the piles was loaded in axial compression via kentledge during the lateral load test. Both piles were constructed in an identical manner. These piles were constructed and tested as part of a construction-phase load test program for a floodwall improvement project along the Missouri River in Kansas City, Kansas. Details of the subsurface conditions, drilled pile construction, instrumentation, and load testing procedures are described. Data collected during testing of the piles are presented and compared. Potential effects of the axial compressive load related to observed differences in pile lateral response are discussed.INTRODUCTIONTwo instrumented test piles were simultaneously subjected to a static lateral load with one of the piles also subject to a combined axial load during testing. The load test program was part of a floodwall improvement project in Kansas City, Kansas. Known as the BPU floodwall, the floodwall runs along the south bank of the Missouri River at a Kansas City Board of Public Utilities power generation and water treatment facility. The project location is shown in Fig. 1.Drilled, 2-ft (610-mm) diameter piles were designated by the designer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), as the foundation type for supporting extended floodwall footings. The drilled piles are fully cased, cast-in-place concrete, reinforced with a steel 12x74 (310x110) H-pile. In order to test soil lateral response and pile structural response under combined loading, the COE required that both a lateral test and combined lateral and axial test pile be constructed and tested. In order to most efficiently test both piles and to allow for simpler comparison, the two piles were simultaneously laterally loaded by jacking the piles apart, applying a maximum lateral load of 195 kips (867 kN). A constant axial load was applied to the combined test pile by kentledge prior to lateral loading and was maintained for the duration of the lateral load test. The total weight of the kentledge was 61.5 kips (274 kN). Fig. 2 shows the test setup."

With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro- duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed." To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions: Briefly there was a lack of any considerable demand for molyb- denum for the one known use that might consume any large tonnage of it, that is, for the manufacture to certain alloy steels to which molybdenum imparts properties roughly similar to those produced by tungsten. It was at once evident that the market for molybdenum in alloy steels must be developed, or that extensive new uses for the metal must be created, before the demand would be sufficient to war- rant any extensive mining of molybdenum ore. Investigation showed that one of the chief factors in retarding the development of any demand for molybdenum by the alloy-steel trade was that manufacturers who might use, or might investigate the possibilities of using, the metal were kept out of the market by the fear of not being able to obtain steady supplies. On the other hand, those who might be interested in the development of some of the extensive low-grade molybdenite or wulfenite deposits in this country were prevented from doing so by the small visible demand and the fear that any large production would glut the market. Owing to these conditions the mining of molybdenum has in the past been confined almost entirely to small-scale operations on high-grade streaks of molybdenite ore, and the methods of recovery have been limited largely to cobbing and hand picking.

This report comprises a brief outline of the experimental cracking of natural gas in a water-gas generator at Louisville, Kentucky, and a discussion of the results obtained. The work was done under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. The re-forming or partial cracking of natural gas is not a new process, but one which has been employed in the manufacture of city gas for a number of years. However, the apparatus used heretofore was not a water-gas generator containing a bed of ignited fuel, but instead it was a plurality of connected chambers containing spaced and arranged checker bricks, with means for heating the bricks and for admitting the natural gas. The procedure previously followed was quite different from that used during the tests at Louisville; likewise the results obtained were different. It is not uncommon for companies distributing natural gas to provide gas-generating equipment for producing manufactured gas which is used, mixed with natural gas, during periods of peak demand. Because this equipment is idle much of the time, in some instances being in use only for a few days a year, some of the gas companies have considered using it, during off-peak periods, in the manufacture of some gaseous products and for carbon black which might he produced and marketed with profit. There is one plant of this kind at Louisville. Kentucky. Its maintenance in condition ready to be operated is necessary because of the limited supply of natural gas and because of the variation in demand. The engineers of the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. considered in particular the possibility of cracking natural gas in a water-gas generator by injecting the gas into the incandescent fuel bed, thereby producing a gas comprised largely of hydrogen (H2) and carbon black, an appreciable amount of which is entrained in the gas as it leaves the generator, Because power and gas are available at low prices, Louisville was believed to be a satisfactory location for a plant which could use hydrogen. It was evident that this method of treating natural gas might directly benefit the gas company by: 1. Lowering, the cost of manufactured gas.

The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.
