110 N. Carpenter is new commercial building located in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The new home to the McDonalds Corporation work headquarters, accelerated project delivery methods were essential to meet the scheduling demands for this project along with other projects slated to start in the region. As such top-down construction methods were utilized to allow for above and below grade construction to proceed in parallel in lieu of more conventional bottom-up construction methods, thus compressing the project schedule. To achieve this plan, perimeter secant pile walls were constructed in conjunction with interior columns/drilled shafts and a shear wall core constructed from inside a temporary cofferdam. The use of secant pile walls allowed for efficient accommodation of a variety of loading conditions including: exterior curtain walls loads, perimeter column loads, tower crane foundation loads, and in-plane shear loads. Furthermore, this system allowed for efficient and fluid operation of equipment on site in order to accommodate the 90-day window allotted for initial foundation construction. INTRODUCTION 110 N. Carpenter is a recently-constructed 9-story commercial building located on the old Harpo Studios property in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The construction of this 55,750m2 (600,000 ft2) structure is significant to the continued commercial development of Chicago as nearly 46,450m2 (500,000 ft2) of the building houses the new world headquarters for the McDonald’s Corporation, which had moved from Chicago to the suburb of Oak Brook in 1971. McDonald’s recommitment to this urban environment is not only a reinvention of the long-established fast food giant but the anchor for a broader redevelopment of the West Loop neighborhood. Since the opening of this building was seen by the developer, the City of Chicago and others as a key to future local projects, innovative solutions were required to showcase forward-thinking design as well as expedite the construction process. The final result of the design/planning process is a structure consisting of nine levels of above-grade commercial space and two levels of below-grade parking, providing approximately 300 parking spaces. The above-grade structure consists of a reinforced concrete flat plate system, including two-way slabs, columns, and two core/shear wall systems for lateral support. With an average depth of 7m (23ft), the below-grade structure consists of interior components similar to the above-grade structure (structural slabs, columns, shear walls) but includes a perimeter secant pile wall that was designed to support lateral earth pressures; vertical forces from the exterior curtain walls, perimeter columns, and the construction tower cranes; and in-plane lateral forces to reduce the demand on and quantity of interior shear walls. The use of a secant pile wall is a key component to the project because it accommodated the use of top-down construction methods to accelerate the construction schedule.

"Induced hydraulic fracture of strata during roof bolt installation is a potentially prevalent, but masked phenomenon within the underground coal industry. Previously reported resin testing programs (McTyer et al., 2014) examined the relationship between resin mixing effectiveness and varying bore hole diameter. The methodology employed within this earlier test program facilitated a further critical area of research – the measurement of back pressures generated within the bore hole during standard rock bolt installation practices. Experimental data has indicated that fluid resin can be pressurised to levels where it exceeds the compressive strength of the strata, inducing hydraulic fracture within the immediate area of the bolting horizon. The routine cycle of roof bolting serves to propagate this effect, progressively fracturing and delaminating the roof during mine advancement. This masked phenomenon can lead to a perception of difficult ground conditions - mining efficiencies and costs are therefore affected, with increased needs for additional support subsequently required to restabilise the inadvertently damaged roof.Further analysis of the parameters associated with resin bolt installation has now been conducted, assisting in the development of an empirical relationship between bore hole pressure, bore hole diameter and bolt insertion times. This relationship has been analysed for 15:1 ratio resins and 2:1 ratioresins, within 28mm and 30mm boreholes. Further to this, load transfer performance has been comparatively assessed for both 28mm and 30mm boreholes, suggesting that for 2:1 resins, acceptable resin mixing and load transfer can be obtained within a 30mm bore hole. The combination of 2:1 resins, utilised within a 30mm bore hole, may well provide the optimal solution to reduce the risk of hydraulic fracture in weaker strata during resin bolt installation.INTRODUCTIONA growing number of industry papers have previously investigated areas of concern associated with the performance of cartridge style resins in roof bolting, predominantly focussing on the effects of plastic film gloving, inadequate resin mixing and the pressurisation of resin within the bore hole. These three effects have a critical influence on the load transfer of the steel bolt element, through the cured resin and into the surrounding strata.Gloving occurs due to the plastic film of the resin cartridge partially encasing or wrapping around the steel roof bolt element – a known phenomenon over many years (Pettibone, 1987). The plastic film creates regions of discontinuity between the bolt, cured resin and borehole, reducing effective load transfer into the strata. Experimentation conducted into the effects of bolt ends fully encased by plastic film (Pastars and MacGregor, 2005) revealed that load transfer can be reduced by 85 to 90% in worstcase occurrences. It is also known that the aggregate filler size used within the resin can assist in shredding and breaking up the plastic film – this effect was observed in a previous study on resin mixing effectiveness (McTyer et al., 2014)."

In the mica research program conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Norris , Tenn . , many micas other than silicon fluorphlogopite have been synthesized . It has been well established since the initiation of the program that synthetic micas are important materials useful for their superior or unique properties as well as substitutes for natural micas . The possibility of controlling the physical properties of synthetic mica by isomorphic substitution of other ions in the fluorphlogopite lattice further emphasizes the importance of these materials . Accurate measurement and reporting of their properties constitute an essential part of the research program . The study of germanium fluorphlogopite is in keeping with the requirements of a comprehensive study on isomorphic substitution , specifically to identify precisely the material -- chemically , structurally , and optically . The X- ray measurements , including indexed powder and single crystal data , with a description of the methods used to obtain these data , are provided . 5 Earlier work on germanium mica by R. A. Hatch et al . (5) gave an estimate of the cell parameters from X - ray powder data , but no attempt was made to index the diffraction pattern or to determine the space group symmetry . Later work by E. A. Schatz and J. C. Withers (9) listed X- ray and optical measurements , but no attempt was made to index the mica or determine its symmetry . Roth (7) found that germanium dioxide having the a - quartz structure , when heated with equimolar percentages of MgO , CaO , Sr0 , or Ba0 at 1,235 ° C , formed ABO3 -type compounds , e.g. MgGe03 isostructural with enstatite (MgSiO3 ) . Geo₂ also has a rutile - type polymorph with Ge ++ ions in octahedral coordination . Germanium was substituted for silicon in the serpentine structure by Roy and Roy (8 ) using hydrothermal techniques . These authors wrote as follows : "The substitution of Ge + for Si + yielded a magnesia - germania serpentine , formed easily in euhedral hexagonal plates which in some instances were visible in the light microscope . Electron micrographs and the sharp X - ray diffraction patterns confirm a plate - like rather than tubular habit . " It has been shown in this investigation that substitution of germanium for silicon in the mica structure is readily accomplished without radically changing the characteristics of the mica . Substitutions in the mica structure take place in three locations : Tetrahedral , octahedral , and interlayer positions . The tetrahedral positions are normally occupied by Sit or by a combination of Sit with Al +3 the most common combination being 2A1 +3 and 6Si +4 · , The octahedral position , which has six - fold coordination in phlogopite , contains a larger cation such as magnesium . In muscovite it contains only 2A1 ions ; therefore , this mica is considered a dioctahedral mica , whereas phlogopite is considered trioctahedral . +3 The interlayer position has twelve - fold coordination with six oxygen ions from each of two adjacent tetrahedral silica layers . This is the cleavage plane of the mica and commonly contains the largest cation in the mica structure (e.g. potassium) .

"In this paper, we report a simple and effective process for producing a surfactant mixture of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan (BBSH). The composite collector was synthesized via one-pot reaction of sodium isopropyl xanthate, 4-tert-butylbenzylchloride and ethylamine using tert-butyl alcohol as solvent. The whole process for the synthesis of composite collector involves neither foul smelling reagents or intermediates, nor any by-products requires special treatment for disposal, and thus can be scaled up to an industrial level. The flotation response of chalcopyrite and pyrite independently with IPETC and BBSH collectors and with their mixture (the mole ratio of IPETC and BBSH is 1:1) was assessed. The microflotation results showed that the collecting ability of BBSH was slightly stronger than that of IPETC and that IPETC was more selective collector than BBSH against pyrite, and that the composite collector displayed a stronger collecting ability toward chalcopyrite than IPETC, and superior selectivity for chalcopyrite against pyrite than BBSH. The batch flotation results showed that composite collector exhibited better performance than IPETC and BBSH. It was demonstrated that the mixing of IPETC and BBSH would give rise to a synergistic effect significantly enhancing overall flotation performance. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of BBSH on the surface of chalcopyrite was conducted by adsorption test and infrared spectrum measurement, and the results showed that the interaction of BBSH on the chalcopyrite surface was dominated by the chemical adsorption, and the formation of a strong S-M bond plays a key role in the adsorption of mercaptans on minerals surfaces. The developed flotation reagents with special preparation method is the author’s original design, patented (patent of the People’s Republic of China) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is an essential method widely used in the mineral processing industry to selectively separate valuable minerals from gangues[1]. Worldwide, more than 109 tons of materials are treated annually by this method with the majority being metal sulfides and oxides[2]. Nowadays, the judicious utilization of complex sulfides to meet the ever-growing demand of mineral resources gains more attention, due to the gradual depletion of deposits with high grade, making imperative the development of new high-efficiency collectors and mixtures of collectors to process complex minerals. In comparison to individual collectors, the use of mixtures has several notable benefits including lower dosage requirements, improved selectivity, rates and recovery and an increase in the recovery of coarse particles[3-9]. Moreover, in terms of cost and environmental issues, using collector mixtures can reduce the total amount of agents used, thus reducing the overall effect on the environment and economic costs without affecting the flotation performance. Therefore, the search for high-efficiency mixtures of collectors is still interesting and relevant."

"The formation of geopolymers from mine tailings using cold-bonding processes is known to be possible. Numerous cold-bonding methods exist, but the hydrothermal processes involving high temperatures and pressures in the presence of steam have been found to be the most ideal. This paper presents the results of successful preliminary studies to apply hydrothermal bonding processes to mine tailings agglomerates. Particle-size analysis revealed the particle size of the tailings waste to be 80 percent passing at 35 µm. The compressive strengths of the tailings pellets were shown to increase with time in the curing vessel, closely approaching the 400 lbf of standard iron ore concentrate pellets. These strengths are sufficient to allow use of the tailings pellets as aggregate materials for asphalt and cement. Additional applications may be possible, including reprocessing to extract more valuable materials and usage as agglomerated road-bed materials, backfills for building foundations, and replacements for sand and lime in cement.IntroductionMine tailings are a waste byproduct of ore concentration and are available in large quantities across the world. Despite their abundance, they have received little attention or consideration for beneficial use. One reason is that the chemical nature of the material is not well known. Another factor that has hindered direct usage is the fine particle size. This raises the questions: what is the composition of the tailings, and how can such fine solids be beneficially used? Because the mining industry produces concentrates, the tailings may be treated as concentrates and processed in the same fashion, but it would be inefficient to consider full sintering or induration conditions for materials that have little ore content. To achieve sustainable operation, the development of technologies to use these tailings is necessary. Mine tailings should not be considered waste, and an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality does not represent a sustainable solution for the future.One iron ore mine in Michigan is estimated to have accumulated more than 400 million metric tons of tailings during its last 30 years of operation, with an additional 180 million metric tons accumulated before the ore body is depleted. These mine tailings currently have no practical use, largely due to a scarcity of knowledge of their true physiochemical nature. It is thought that lack of quality control of the waste material prevents its use, but variability in the unprocessed ore prevents a consistent waste stream composition. The fact that the tailings are available in such great quantities makes them an extremely attractive resource. However, developing a sustainable, low-cost means of repurposing the mine tailings waste as a construction material may only be completed once the tailings are physically and chemically understood. Due to the high silica content of the material studied, cold bonding was determined to be the most viable method for processing the tailings into a usable product."

A larger, slow-speed, under-loaded ball mill and hydraulic classifier have almost doubled grinding efficiency at the lsabella mill. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore con-A centrators, the London and Isabella mills near Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.' Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge." While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill—ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed. In 1953 this study was reopened when plans were made to increase the Isabella mill output from 1150 to 1500 tpd. At this time the grinding circuit consisted of a 6x12 rod mill followed by a 6x12 ball mill in closed circuit with a 6-ft rake classifier. Another 6x12 ball mill and 6-ft rake classifier would have been sufficient equipment and would have been the simplest and cheapest installation. However, this would have offered no improvement in grinding efficiency or operating cost. If, on the other hand, the grinding operation could be converted to the London practice, by installation of one large 101/2x9x9 tricone mill and a 10-ft hydroscillator,2 lower operating costs would justify the additional investment. Economics: Table I presents estimates for the two schemes for enlarging the Isabella mill. In the first scheme, column 1, one 6x12 ball mill and one 6-ft rake classifier were to be added. In the second scheme, column 2, the existing small ball mill and rake classifier were to be retired and one large mill and hydroscillator were to be installed. Estimated savings from the difference in operating costs made an attractive return on the additional investment for the large mill and hydroscillator. Actual costs of carrying out this plan are tabulated in column 3b. It will be seen that these costs follow the estimates in column 3a very Closely. The return on the additional investment is calculated from the difference in the operating cost in column 1 and the actual operating cost in column 3b. This too come very close to the estimate. Power and Steel: Power requirements and steel consumption for the rod mills and ball mills, both actual and estimated, are presented in Table 11.

"Thermodynamic relations among Mn, Al and N in liquid iron were studied by measuring the effect of Mn on the solubility product of AlN in liquid Fe-Mn-Al-N alloys in the temperature range from 1773 to 1873 K. The critical Al and N contents for AlN formation were determined by the metal-nitride-gas equilibration technique over wide ranges of melt composition and temperature. The effects of Mn on N solubility in Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-Al melts containing Mn up to 26 mass% were separately determined in the same temperature range. The experimental results were thermodynamically analyzed using the Wagner's formalism to estimate the critical Al and N contents for the onset of A1N formation. The validity was checked by the observation of inclusion evolution in Fe-20%Mn-1.5%Al-0.6%C-0.3%Si-0.012%N melt during cooling and solidification.IntroductionRecently, high manganese steels such as Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steels have been developed as next generation steels because of their high formability as well as excellent strength and ductility.[1•2l In these steel grades, a large amount of Mn (15-20 mass%) and Al (1-2 mass%) are added to liquid steels, and such high Mn and Al concentration bring the great challenges to the steelmaking and casting processes. Mn significantly increases the N solubility in liquid iron and the AlN inclusions can be easily formed at such high Al concentrations due to high affinity of Al and Mn with N in liquid steels. Although the AlN inclusion is known to be a dominating and considered as a detrimental phase for the hot ductility of steels,l3l thermodynamics of AlN formation in high Mn-Al alloyed liquid steels was not well known.Moreover, the melting point of these steels decreases down to near 1623 K as increasing Mn content up to 20 mass%. However, most of thermodynamic data has been measured at the steelmaking temperature around 1873 K. Even at steelmaking temperature, there are huge scatters in thermodynamic interactions of Mn and Al on N in liquid iron. The nitrogen solubility in Fe-Mn alloy melts has been measured using the Sieverts' method[4l and the samplinij method[5-7J in the temperature range of 1813 to 1973 K. In the authors' recent study,[8•9 the N solubility in Fe-Al alloy melts was measured using the sampling method in the temperature range of 1823 to 1973 K. However, the simultaneous effect of Mn and Al at high concentrations on Nin liquid Fe-Mn-Al-N alloys is still not known. Also, there remains uncertainty about the temperature dependence of the interaction parameter of Mn on N in liquid Fe-Mn alloys. Therefore, it is worthwhile to check the temperature dependence of this parameter at a low temperature near the melting point of Fe-Mn alloys. The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. During the machining operation much of the finely porous subsurface structure was obliterated. Accordingly, observations were also made

"Fine coal separation has been always concerned. The froth flotation is not efficient in desulfurization because of the low rate of sulfide liberation from raw coal, the natural hydrophobicity caused by sulfur concentration on the surface of sulfide, and the presence of large amounts of middling feed. An efficient centrifugal gravity separator was employed to separate for Shandong –0.5mm high sulphur coal, the partition curve of centrifugal separator was obtained with conclusion that the Ecart probable error value of the separator is 0.095, the imperfection I value is 0.128. Finally, comparing with the coal flotation using progressive release method, the result shows that the effect of the desulfurization with centrifugal gravity force field based on density difference between coal and minerals are much better than that of the floatation which operates based on the difference in surface properties. It provides a efficient technical way for fine coal separation. INTRODUCTION Coal plays the most important role in the energy consumption in China. Although natural gas, wind energy, nuclear power has made great progress in recent years, but the share of coal in the final energy consumption accounts for 70-80%, which is determined by energy storage of China. Under the requirement of environmental protection, the clean utilization of coal resources becomes more and more important, and the need has already been identified. Coal washing and processing plays an important role in the process of high-efficiency and clean utilization of coal. For the separation of fine coal, flotation is a traditional method for effective separation and has been used in large scale industrial applications in coal preparation plant. However, for the separation of difficult-to float coal, especially fine oxidized coal and low–rank coal with hydrophilic surface, flotation is usually inefficient [1-3]. Although many pretreatment methods have been adopted, including grinding, microwave pretreatment, new flotation reagents, the problem of efficient separation has not been completely resolved [4-6]. Thus, an enhanced gravity separation method using particle density difference rather than hydrophobic difference was proposed for the separation of fine coal. Many research results have proved that this is a practical and effective method of sorting. R.Q. Honaker used Falcon C10 concentrator, Knelson centrifugal separator and spiral separator to clean the fine coal with size of 600*210 µm and 210*37µm, the effects of different operating parameters on the separation index was discussed. The results show that the separation density of Falcon can reach 1.6, and the Ep value can reach 0.1-0.15. This paper revealed that for the separation of fine coal with high sulfur content or fine grained content. Falcon has high separation efficiency with low cost. Separation results present in another paper showed that the desulfurization efficiency of inorganic sulfur was better than that of flotation [7-8]."

The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. "INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today's market.

"Magnetite iron deposits on Tolstoi Mountain were examined as part of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island. The Tolstoi Mountain project was a part of a program for investigating mineral deposits in Alaska, under the general supervision of R. S. Sanford, acting branch chief.A preliminary examination was made by S. P. Holt, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in company with John Reed, L. A. Warner, and W. S. Twenhofel of the Federal Geological Survey, on July 14, l943. Three samples were taken, rough estimates were made, and it was proposed that the area be mapped, topographically and geologically,. Dip-needle work was added to the program, and it was decided that, should results warrant, the deposits would be diamond-drilled.From March 26 to May 28, 1944, the deposits were examined thoroughly by Bureau of Mines personnel under the direction of the author. Thirty-two acres were mapped with contour intervals of 10 feet, grids were established covering the principal outcrops, over 1,500 dip-needle readings were secured, and the magnetite bodies were outlined. Additional information was gathered by trench inch and channel-sampling, 600 linear feet of trench being dug and 32 channel samples being cut. Finally, the mapped area was checked for nonoutcropping deposits by taking dip-needle readings at 10-foot intervals along the traverse lines, creeks, trails, and all outstanding topographical features. This re-connaissance work gave sufficient coverage of the 32 acres to eliminate the possibility of further magnetite bodies of any consequence remaining undiscovered.Acknowledgment is made to Nile Johannsen, assayer, Territorial Department of Mines, Ketchfkan, Alaska, for determination of samples.The deposits are on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska near Tolstoi Pay, a deep-water indentation at the northwest and of Kasdan Peninsula. Old workings were found on the west side of Tolstoi Mountain; between elevations of 650 and 1,150 feet, at distances of 3/4 to 1-1/4 miles from the east shore of Tolstoi Bay.Access to the area is over a brushed foot trail built by the Bureau of Mines. Topography would permit construction of either surface or aerial tramways at moderate cost but would make road building expensive. Deep-water navigation, permitting inexpensive water transportation, is possible the year around.Kasaan Peninsula is an area of moderate relief, being considerably less rugged than the mainland to the east. Most of the mountains and ridges are less than 2,500 feet in height and show evidence of having been covered by the ice cap of the Pleistocene age. Rock exposures below elevations of 2,000 feet are limited, as extensive overburden 2 to 20 feet deep covers the greater part of the peninsula."

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

Jim Walter Resources, along with the Rock Mechanics Branch of British Coal and Strata Control Technology Pty. Ltd., is presently studying the yield-stable-yield pillar design in use at the Blue Creek No. 7 Mine located in Brookwood, Alabama. This paper describes the steps taken to determine stresses on the strata surrounding the pre-driven development entries. It also describes the installation and monitoring of stress cells and extensometers used to quantify the stress build-up and strata movement associated with the headgate pass of a longwall panel. The findings of this study will be used to design and predict the performance of a 2 entry yield pillar system in the Parkgate Seam at Welbeck Colliery in the United Kingdom. Stress measurements and strata movement data from No. 7 Mine and Welbeck will be used to develop a computer model that can predict the performance of such a pillar system in British mines. Jim Walter Resources will use this data to study the performance of the present yield-stable-yield pillar system in order to determine if conditions will allow the stable pillar width to be decreased while maintaining current standards of safety and production.

Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on total nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

Nanofiltration (NF) has attracted much attention over the past few years due to the reduced energy consumption compared to reverse osmosis (RO) and better separation performance compared to ultrafiltration (UF). Although research has been done in the area of NF of nickel ions, sodium ions, and acid separation, not much attention has been given to the separation of high nickel concen¬trations from sulphuric acid streams. The use of NF for the separation of nickel and acid from a spent nickel electrolyte is an innovative process alternative for future industrial application within a base metal refinery. In this study, the separation performance of a composite polyamide NF membrane on a spent nickel electrolyte was investigated by varying the sodium sulphate concentration in the feed (50-150 g/l), the trans-membrane pressure (35-55 bar), and cross-flow velocity (1.5-3.5 m/s), and measuring quantities such as total permeate flux, acid rejection, nickel rejection, and sodium rejection. The nickel and acid concentration in the feed were kept constant with variations between 40-60 g/l and 25-40 g/l respectively, while the temperature of the experiments was kept constant at 50°C. The membrane was found to be very selective for nickel ions, with the rejection of nickel ions varying between 54.4% and 98.2%. The rejection of acid ions varied between -5.9% and 21.8%. The rejection of sodium ions varied between 16.6% and 72.4% at a cross-flow velocity of 2.5 m/s and sodium sulphate concentration of 50 g/l in the feed solution. An increase in trans-membrane pressure increased the rejection of nickel, sodium, and acid ions, while an increase in sodium sulphate concentration decreased the rejection of nickel and acid ions. The total permeate flux was found to increase with an increase in trans-membrane pressure and decrease with an increase in sodium sulphate concentration. The cross-flow velocity had an insignificant effect on the total permeate flux and the rejection of nickel, sodium and acid ions.

Cokriging uses a sparsely sampled, but accurate and precise primary dataset, together with a more abundant secondary data-set, for example grades in a polymetallic orebody, containing both error and bias, to provide improved results compared to estimation with the primary data alone, as well as filtering the error and mitigating the effects of conditional bias. The method described here may also be applied in polymetallic orebodies and in other cases where the primary and secondary data could be collocated, and one of the data-sets need not be biased, unreliable, etc. An artificially created reference data-set of 512 lognormally distributed precious metal grades sampled at 25×25 m intervals constitutes the primary data-set. A secondary data-set on a 10×10 m grid comprising 3200 samples drawn from the reference data-set includes 30 per cent error and 1.5 multiplicative bias on each measurement. The primary and secondary non-collocated data-sets are statistically described and compared to the reference data-set. Variograms based on the primary data-set are modelled and used in the kriging of 10×10 m blocks using the 25×25 m and 50×50 m data grids for comparison against the results of the cokriged estimation. A linear model of coregionalization (LMC) is established using the primary and secondary data-sets and cokriging using both data-sets is shown to be a significant improvement over kriging with the primary data-set alone. The effects of the error and bias are filtered and removed during the cokriging estimation procedure. Thus cokriging using the more abundant secondary data, even though it contains error and bias, significantly improves the estimation of recoverable reserves.

"A combination of oxidation and precipitation was used to eliminate cyanide from gold milling effluents. Preliminary laboratory work developed with both synthetic cyanide solutions and with industrial effluents indicated that ozone can easily destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (i.e. copper and zinc cyanide). In this case the reaction is quite fast and seems to be controlled by the mass transfer of ozone to the solution. Experimental results indicate that free cyanide and weak-acid dissociable cyanide in mill effluents can be reduced to less than 1 ppm. However, the iron-cyanide complexes proved to be quite resilient to destruction with ozone and they remained in the solution even after most of the free and weakly complexed cyanide was destroyed with ozone. These results were confirmed in a pilot trial developed at the Sphinx plant in northern Quebec.To deal with the problem presented by the presence of the iron complexes two different approaches were studied: use of a combination ozone-ultraviolet light oxidation, and the precipitation of iron-ferrocyanide complexes in the residual solution after ozonation. This last method proved quite promising since reduced the total cyanide levels of industrial solutions assaying as much as 250 ppm to less than 1 ppm of total cyanide. Control of the · pH of the solution was the key to obtain the precipitation of the iron complexes. The use of iron to precipitate cyanide complexes has the advantage of being less expensive and less toxic than copper (used by the Inco process)."
