Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

A case study describing the expansion of Marion County landfill is presented. The exapansion area is located on a deep mined area. Finite element analyses were used to predict the surface subsidence and associated tensile strains on the landfill liner of the expansion site. A synthetically reinforced liner system is recommended to minimize the impact of the subsurface movements on the integrity of the liner system.

The iron constituents selectively separated from the modified copper slags by magnetic separation and flotation.were studied. The results of magnetic separation for modified copper smelting slags show that the grinding size, current intensity and dispersant agent had great influence on grade, and recovery ratio of TFe in preparation concentrate; The results of flotation for magnetic concentrate show that the positive flotation of sodium oleate negatively upgrade the grade of magnetic concentrate, but the reverse flotation of lauryl amine and soluble starch are effective. The grade of TFe can reach 54% and the recovery ratio can reach about 90% in magnetic concentrate, when the grinding size is 45.8µm and the current intensity is 2.5A. The optimal effect is obtained by using lauryl amine as collector and soluble starch as depressant to reverse flotate magnetic concentrate, and the grade of TFe is upgraded 2.37%.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200° C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. It is shown that the ferrous ion and sulphuric acid generated in situ by the oxidation of pyrite, dissolves manganese as manganous sulphate. An investigation has been carried on samples of three Queensland coal dusts to determine the potential explosibility of dust-gas mixtures. The explosion potential of the samples was classified by the lean and rich limits of explosibility and the limiting oxygen concentrations for each sample. Plotting of these points showed 2-dimensional flammability limit surfaces for coal dust/oxygen, methane/oxygen and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots the 3-dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the mixtures were defined. The explosion limits of the coal dust/methane/oxygen system were seen to be influenced most by the explosibility characteristics of coal dust. Methane exerted a stronger influence over the explosion limits when the coal had a low volatile content

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

This paper describes the modification of a nonelectric detonator which is ignited by a signal tubing. The heart of the new detonator lies in a so-called ignition transmitting element. The construction of the transmitting element is such that the detonator remains closed even after the signal tube has functioned. Due to the sealing of the delay element, this nonelectric detonator achieves the same accurate delay timing as high tech delay electric detonators and will not fail due to a sudden pressure loss.

The results obtained from the operation of a batch centrifugal ball mill are reported, together with the development of a model for the behaviour of a particle in free flight within the mill, and the introduction of a cumulative breakage rate function. Schumann and Rosin-Rammler plots show the change in particle-size distribution with time at various configurations of the mill. Graphs showing the rate of production of fines and the rate of breakage of coarse particles are included.

Upon being introduced to the MAGNETIC COUPLING concept,Balsinger,Inc. wanted to conduct field trials to explore the potential of Magnetic Coupling in the U.S.. Although the Magnetic Coupling Concept has been widely used, the U.S. proposed blasting criterion not previously addressed by the system. Modification to the system assembly and blasting accessories had to be made to make the system adaptable to our specific requirements. The computer-aided simulation model re¬ported here is an extension of the one developed by the author while at The Pennsylvania State University. The present model, however, includes consideration of the deformability and secondary fracturing of the porous system. The modifications enable simulation of multiphase shallow unsaturated-saturated and/or artesian ground water systems in dynamic mining environments. The model has been validated, verified, and evaluated on a number of field case studies and the results have been excellent.

The distribution coefficients of Ag, As, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Te, and Zn between copper matte and slag from the reverb furnace No.2 at the Copper Smelter and Refinery, RTB BOR (Yugoslavia), are presented in this paper. The influence of the matte grade on the minor elements distribution coefficients between copper matte and slag is analyzed. The minor elements distribution in the slag phase along the slag melt depth and the furnace length is also determined.
