The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations. Titanium was discovered in 1791 and, four years later, was named after the Titans of Greek mythology. Titanium metal was first made in 1910, but was not used commercially until the 1950s when it was nick-named The Wonder Metal of the Age. The first titanium dioxide (TiO2) white pigments were produced commercially in 1915; more than 90% of the titanium minerals produced in the world today are used in the manufacture of white pigments. The remaining 10% are used to manufacture titanium metal and other uses such as welding rod fluxes. Titanium mineral mining began in the United States between 1880 and 1900 in Chester County, Pennyslvania. Rutile from a deposit near Roseland, VA, was mined in 1901. The use for the rutile was limited to production of a few titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Larger scale mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon began in Florida to provide chemical materials for use in World War I in 1918. This mining ended in 1928. Large scale mining of titanium minerals in Australia began when Benick, Anderson, and Porter (later called Tamco) started mining the beach sands at Yamba in New South Wales in 1935. Ilmenite production from beach sands in the State of Kerala in southwestern India also began in the 1930s. The 1940s saw many changes in titanium mineral mining. Extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The Pigments Department of E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. lost their high grade Indian ilmenite supply after World War II began, and they were forced to use lower grade ilmenite from National Lead's (now NL Industries) Sanford Lake Deposit, near Tahawus, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains. At the end of the war, Du Pont undertook an intense search for a domestic ilmenite source. With the cooperation of the US Bureau of Mines, Du Pont geologists found a very large deposit east of Starke, FL, in 1946. In 1948 Du Pont entered into a contract with Humphreys Gold Corp., who operated a heavy minerals mine near Jacksonville, FL, to construct a plant and operate it for a period of ten years. The plant started up in 1949 and operated under Humphreys' management until the contract expired in 1958. Du Pont has operated the plant since that time. In 1956, a second plant was designed and built by Du Pont a few kilometers northeast of the town of Lawtey. The 1960s saw titanium mineral production expand in the southeastern US with Humphreys' contract mining Du Pont's ore body at Folkston, GA. In the early 1970s. American Cyanamid and Union Camp Paper Co. formed a joint venture company, Titanium Enterprises (TE), to mine and separate titanium minerals from Union Camp's ore deposit southwest of Green Cove Springs, FL. In 1975 the TE plant was shutdown and later sold to Associated Minerals (USA), Inc. (AMC), a subsidiary of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Ltd., an Australian company. It now operates under the name RGC (USA). Mineral production grew in the 1970s with the development of extensive heavy mineral deposits at Eneabba in Western Australia and Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa. The 1980s saw the construction of a very large ilmenite mine and synthetic rutile processing plant in the state of Orissa southwest of Calcutta, India. At the same time, concern for titanium mineral shortages expected by the end of this century, gave rise to a flurry of exploration activity during the mid 1980s. As a result, large deposits were found in Virginia and North Carolina. New deposits were also discovered in Australia. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of world titanium deposits and mines. The world TiO, production capacities are given in Table 1.

Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

"NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE, is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines, which has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. MFIRE is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence such as changes in ventilation parameters, external influences such as changes in temperature, and internal influences such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released over the years. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated FORTRAN programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic link library (DLL). However, the MFIRE 3.0 release made no attempt to change or improve the fire modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of fire source models of the t-squared fire and heat release rate curve data file, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke rollback phenomena. All the improvements discussed in this paper will be termed as MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future INTRODUCTION The MFIRE program, originally developed in the 1970s by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (now the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) and Michigan Technological University, has been a mainstay in modeling of the mutual influences between a fire and the mine ventilation system during an underground mine fire. Several update versions have been released over the years, including MFIRE 1.27, 1.29, 1.30, 2.0/2.01, 2.10, and 2.20. The MFIRE program logically comprises four parts: (1) a conventional network calculation, where it performs the basic network balancing without considering heat or mass transfer; (2) a temperature calculation to establish the reference temperature distribution before a non-steady state (transient-state) simulation; (3) a transient-state simulation that follows changes in ventilation step-by-step to produce a continuous description of the temperature distribution, smoke, and contaminant spread through the ventilation system during a fire event; and (4) a quasi-equilibrium simulation to predict the state of the ventilation system after a relatively long period of time (defaulted as 5 hours in MFIRE) as the fire reaches a quasi-steady state. In summary, MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions including the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these (Chang et al., 1990)."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer, and distribution of DPM in coal mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Analyzed using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study is presented.With diesel equipment holding an important place in underground coal mining and growing in use over time, it is important to develop and improve controls of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM), to further reduce potential health hazards. The proper design and maintenance of diesel engines and on¬board control procedures are paramount requirements for controlling DPM successfully. There is also, however, a significant reduction potential in terms of personal exposure that can be realized by managing the DPM that gets into the airstream. Strategic design of the mining, ventilation, and equipment implementation systems remain essential for efficiently reducing the DPM concentrations.Modeling the effect of diesel exhaust contaminants upon the mine atmospheric quality will permit improved health and safety design of the overall mining and ventilation systems. Numerous studies have been performed to model the distribution/transport of gaseous and particulate emissions in the underground mine atmosphere and some very sophisticated convection/diffusion models have been developed (Skobunov, 1974; Thakur, 1974; Stefanko and Ramani, 1975; Wala, 1980; Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1983). Most of these models were developed for a single airway or based on the assumption that the ventilation network of a mining section can be approximately represented by a single intake and a single return. The complexity of most models of the convection/diffusion type and the mobility aspect of diesel haulage units made a detailed emissions model very difficult to develop.The current model is an attempt to fill the need for a more generic tool applicable to mining sections employing multiple mobile diesel units by simplifying the convection-diffusion model to a convection-only model. The simplification is based on the fact that the diffusion coefficient will affect only the transient environmental contaminant concentrations with little or no affect on the time-weighted-average concentrations over a relatively long period such as a working shift (Lee et al., 1994). In view of the difficulties involved in mathematical modeling, the approach here is developing and using a computer simulation model. A PC-based FORTRAN 77 simulation model for the analysis of mining systems with multiple diesel sources and any ventilation network configuration was developed to study the distribution/transport of DPM in mine airways, evaluate methods of reducing DPM concentrations, and explore modifications to existing mining practice."

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970?s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980?s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a widely used process within the minerals processing industry, as well as being used for water treatment and de-inking of recycled paper. Froth flotation started in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century and since then flotation technology has made significant advances. Flotation was firstly applied to sulfide ores. The largest tonnages treated by flotation are copper and copper/molybdenum ores, handling about 50% of the total ore processed. Also significant are phosphate, iron ore and coal treatments. At present, Chile is the foremost copper producer in the world with around 35% of the world?s production. Figure 1(a) shows the evolution of copper production in Chile over the last decade. The total amount of fine copper produced in year 2001 was 4.7 million tons, from which 3.2 million tons was processed by flotation while 1.5 million tons went through LIX-SX-EW processes, which also showed significant development during the same period (Anon, 2001). The total flotation treatment of copper ores in Chile is about 325 million tons per year (Anon, 2002), so the world treatment of copper ore by flotation can be estimated at about 1 billion tons per year. Consequently a total of nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year is presently processed worldwide by flotation (Fuerstenau, 2001). In order to handle the higher tonnage of low-grade ore, a worldwide trend towards the development and use of larger flotation machines began in the 1960?s. Figure 1(b) shows that the trend became extremely marked from the beginning of the 1990?s, which is consistent with the strong increase in copper production during the same period."

"The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is a major water utility service providing water to over 1.3 million people in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. EBMUD manages 28 dams at 5 terminal and 23 open-cut reservoirs within a 331-square-mile customer service area. As part of a 2012 update on EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, EBMUD has decided to replace Central Reservoir, a 152.8 milliongallon open cut reservoir, with optimally sized tanks. This paper presents the results of an analytical comparison of various foundation reinforcement solutions for the proposed tanks including: Cement Deep Soil Mixed (CDSM) columns, vibro stone columns, rammed aggregate piers, and lightweight cellular concrete fill. The computational program GeoMat (www.ensoftinc.com) was used to perform simplified soil structure interaction analyses. Settlement estimates were developed for each alternative with the proposed loading and compared to an allowable differential settlement criterion established at 0.3-inches over a 50 foot length. The authors wish to present the importance of considering mat and soil interaction along with various settlement mitigation methods considered for this challenging project.INTRODUCTIONProject BackgroundCentral Reservoir is an operational open-cut reservoir located north of the intersection of 25th Avenue and East 29th Street in Oakland, California. The reservoir is bound by 23rd Avenue to the west, Sheffield Avenue to the east and Interstate Highway 580 to the north. Originally, the Central Reservoir site was a drainage swale incising into weathered bedrock formed from Pleistocene alluvial deposits. The reservoir was first constructed in 1910 by excavating a basin below grade and constructing an embankment dam on the south and cutting/filling the bedrock and alluvial deposits from the drainage swale. The main dam at the Central Reservoir site is also a DSOD (Department of Safety of Dams) jurisdictional dam and as such is regularly monitored by the EBMUD Materials Engineering Section and the California DSOD.In a 2012 update to EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, Central Reservoir was identified as a critical facility that has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced due to: a failing panel craft lining which contains polychlorinated biphenyls in the interior coating, a roof that does not meet the current seismic code, and reduced operating levels due to potential leakage in the upper portions of the panel craft lining. Furthermore, Central Reservoir is about three times larger than required and is located at a lower elevation than other regional reservoirs in the pressure zone resulting in increased labor-intensive operational challenges and water quality operations.This project presents some challenging geotechnical demands – the site is founded on weakly consolidated Holocene Alluvium overlying weathered bedrock, the proposed structural loads are large, and the new Central Reservoir is to be placed on a pad at an elevation of 182 feet, required placement of up to 30 feet of fill over the current basin. Additionally, the project aims for a long-term foundation solution that will outlive the new replacement tanks and accommodate future site upgrades. In order to meet this goal, the differential settlement criterion for the tanks was ¼ inch over 50 feet length. Lastly, the project also aims to address EBMUD’s increasing trench spoil stockpiles by recycling discarded trench spoils as fill for the proposed tank pad."

"This case study explores the usage of polymer ducting as a replacement to curtains and FRP for face ventilation in two coal mines. There are two mines looked at, one is the highest elevation underground coal mine in North America, the other is the gassiest mine in North America. The paper details the trials of both mines switching from FRP and curtain respectively to polymer ducting. The results discuss the ability for the mines to not only achieve consistent airflows and keep them in compliance but the unexpected positives. Mine A was allowed to do longer cross cuts due to increased air volume at the face. This drastically cut their costs of mining down due solely to modification of the ventilation cycle. Mine B saw economic benefits due to longer cuts between place changes. Both mines have documented lower dust, methane, noise, and improved wear and tear on their equipment as a result.INTRODUCTIONThe emergence of longwall mining in underground coal operations has resulted in new ventilation challenges. Numerous production crews strive to complete their development sections with enough time to adequately prepare for the upcoming longwall panel. Continuous miners will cut out two or three entry development sections per their ventilation plan, that is approved and controlled by MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), which will drive amount of footage that can be mined at a time prior to installing roof support. At this moment the continuous miner, hereafter referred to as the CM, will back out of the entry and moves to the second entry to complete a similar cut. Typically, a roof bolter crew will pull in to the finished cut section and install ground support. This is called a place change style of production coal mining. There is an alternate method that includes a miner/bolter combination as well but that was not featured at either test site in this case study. Ventilation has to be provided to sweep the working face of each entry to control dust and gasses. Each task will have an MSHA prescribed ventilation requirement dependent on the dust levels and methane emissions of the rock for that particular mine. The CM, roof bolting and unused headings will each require constant ventilation but at different volumes. Since each working face is changing throughout the mining cycle the ventilation requirement in a working heading is never static and is changing with the working task.Traditional Ventilation ControlsTraditionally face ventilation for coal mining operations has been completed thru the usage of a curtain system and\or using auxiliary fans and ventilation tubing. Room and pillar mining systems typically utilize curtain systems, which use curtain walls that are installed by the miners by erecting wood framing and covering it with brattice curtain. This splits the drift width to allow fresh air to sweep the face and take the contaminated air and dust behind the curtain to the ventilation exhaust\return area of the mine. This method is difficult to adjust the airflow from entry to entry during changing cycles and requires that a wider drift is mined out in order to have enough room for the brattice wall. In operations that require roof bolting, this method limits the length of the cuts from the CM prior to advancing and can lead to not providing enough ventilation to keep dust and methane levels below compliance requirements."

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

Several processes for the production of ultra-clean coal for electrode carbon were developed in Germany prior to and during World War II . These processes have been investigated since the end of the war by the British and U. S. Government missions . As the reports of the investigations are not readily available to the public , it is the purpose of this paper to present the information which has been obtained regarding the methods by which ultraclean coal was produced . Almost all the ultra-clean coal was used in the manufacture of electrodes for the production of aluminum and magnesium . Standard raw materials for making these electrodes are pitch coke and petroleum coke , which are nearly ashless . The inclusion of ash in the electrode carbon results in lowered efficiency and impure metal from the reduction process . Petroleum coke and pitch coke were in very short supply in Germany during the war , so that it was necessary to augment the supply with carbon produced from coal . In the emergency , methods were developed to clean coal which had never before been economically feasible . However , a demand for nearly ash-free coal might develop in the United States if a shortage of petroleum coke were to occur at the same time as a strong demand for light metals . Other uses of ultraclean coal are in direct hydrogenation of coal , in production of activated carbon, and for special fuels . Specifications for electrode carbon are rather severe owing to the necessity for producing pure metal . Maximum amounts of impurities allowable in American practice are as follows : Total ash , 1.0 percent ( in finished coke , 0.7 percent ) Silica , 0.08 percent Ca or Na, or their sum , 0.12 percent Sulfur , 2.0 percent Ba , Ni , Cr , Mn , Co , and V are objectionable in very small amounts . The most important process for ultra cleaning of coal in Germany was froth flotation . Froth flotation had been used widely there to process washery -water sludges and to recover coking coal from high - ash fines . Its use was indicated , therefore , when the demand for ultra low-ash coal arose . In two plants the coal cleaned by froth flotation was treated with acid or caustic to lower further the ash content . Another process used on an industrial scale was that of dissolving the coal substance in the middle oil from direct hydrogenation of coal under controlled pressure and temperature . The resulting paste was heated, filtered , and the oil distilled off . The residue was a low-ash organic material that could be carbonized for electrode carbon or could be hydrogenated directly . Several other processes had been developed to the laboratory or pilot - plant stage but had never been used on a commercial scale . These processes included cleaning by centrifugal action , cleaning by electrostatic action , and cleaning by forming a paste with oil in water . The coal-preparation plants at the Carl Alexander mine , Augusta Viktoria mine , and Kőenigin Elisabeth mine are described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7389 : " Coal Preparation Practice in Western Germany" , by Thomas . Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Pegmatites in Colorado occur for 150 miles along the Front Range (eastern-most range of the Rocky Mountains) from Larimer County on the north to Canon City on the south, and west into the Gunnison area. Many of the deposits have been classified. Minerals found in the various dikes include beryl, scrap and possibly punch mica, lithium-bearing minerals, columbite-tantalite, feldspar, and several rare minerals. Pegmatites are abundant in the Crystal Mountain district in Larimer County. About 5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain district and often identified with that district is the Hyatt pegmatite area. The Hyatt Ranch deposit has attracted particular attention because of the comparatively high beryl con-tent of the upper part exposed in opencut workings.

"INTRODUCTION Underground Mining and Construction projects face several challenges unique to the underground environment compared to the surface environment. The goals of an effective blasting program are the development of a blast pattern that minimizes cost, maximizes face advance, and provides the desired fragmentation and face profile. In addition to these , mines must consider the very real operational problems that occur such as drill deviation, ground vibration, and deadpressing or sympathetic detonation of explosives. These operation problems lead to increased costs and decreased production in the mine, hurting the bottom line. Combined with these problems, underground blasts can be difficult to monitor and evaluate due to tight spaces, dust during the blast obscuring video, and the need to evacuate the immediate area with no clear line of sight to observe performance. This creates an environment which most mines know that blasting can be improved in their underground operations, yet most are hesitant to change due to fears of the shot freezing, misfires occurring, and questions about how to achieve a proper design. The explosive companies and shot service providers also offer limited assistance or knowledge in the underground blasting realm, unlike with surface blasting, leaving many underground operations in the dark. It is for these reasons that most underground operations are operating decades behind the current technologies and incurring significant costs, both real and hidden, from there blasting operations. This paper discusses philosophical changes to designs that need to be made for effective design and modifications of underground blast patterns to prevent deadpressing and precompression of modern explosive products (Konya, Konya, & Worsey, Modern Blasting Method Selection, 2017). While numerous different methods of underground heading development exist, there are two types that are used in a majority of mines around the world, these are the burn cut and the V-cut. The burn cut is a parallel cut that has holes that go straight into the face and are primarily used in smaller opening (due to ability to pull deep rounds with smaller room widths) and metal mines (helps in ore dilution and greater fragmentation). The V-Cut is a cut that uses angled drilling towards the center of the face (in the traditional method) and is primarily used in underground aggregate operations due to its cheap cost but larger fragmentation sizes and greater throw of the muckpile. This paper will discuss these two forms of cuts specifically with the understanding that modifications to these can be applied to other parallel and angled underground heading techniques. BURN CUT The burn cut is one of the older forms of underground blasting, where a part of the blast (burn) of a shot is heavily loaded with additional empty (relief) holes with the goal of smashing (aka burn) and pushing/blowing all the material in the burn out to provide relief for subsequent blastholes. The relief holes in the burn cut provide a parallel relief for the holes that are firing to break too creating a second plane of relief, however these are extremely small and can cause many problems if a design is improper."

"Developed countries are in the midst of re-structuring education in minerals-related disciplines as raw materials, once vital to wealth generation, contribute progressively less to the economy. The changing circumstances mean institutions must justify mineral processing by new criteria. After considering what a mineral processor needs to know the ways to deliver are considered. Taking twenty graduates per year to illustrate, one institute could justify this number as a program in a department or school (of whatever grouping of disciplines). A strong research component would make the package additionally attractive. Divide among four institutions and mineral processing is best served in a research centre with delivery taking advantage of multi-centre and distance learning opportunities.INTRODUCTIONThis is one of five plenary lectures at the Congress. I may have preferred a technical subject, as that is what occupies most of my thinking hours, but it is reasonable as an academic that this topic should come to one of us. The fact the topic has not been high on my agenda may provide one advantage: that I can suggest directions free of pre-conceived notions, just as when reviewing the background to a technical article the temptation to select in support of one?s interpretations is resisted. The trick will be to add something new.One reading of the title seems to query whether mineral processing education has a future. (I will refrain at this juncture from defining mineral processing and assume for now we share an understanding of the term.) The proximity of natural and human resources led to the Industrial Revolution and the interaction continues to stimulate and sustain industrial and economic development in many parts of the world. The search for raw materials has historically played a key role in opening frontier areas, with undersea and outer space next. The reason is obvious: raw materials along with food and energy underpin society. Thus mining will remain part of human activity along with the need to pass on the knowledge and skills.What happens over time is resource relocation. Raw materials become exhausted in one area to be replaced by sources elsewhere; the demand for some materials lessens while growing for others. Educational institutions can find themselves with the wrong geography or with staff focussing on the wrong subjects. When this happens the restructuring produces much discussion. This is where we are in parts of the world. Japan, Western Europe and the United States are the prominent examples (Dowd, 1998; Flemings and Suresh, 2001; McDivitt, 2002). Mineral processing is becoming a series of courses in related disciplines: resource engineering, environment engineering or materials engineering. The start of the transition is evident in Canada and Australia, perhaps earlier than expected given the contribution of raw materials to their economies. A common backdrop in the developed countries is social pressure to reduce the impact of the ?untidy? aspects of life, and that includes mining. (This is not new: in classical times the mine face was the preserve of slaves and convicts.) These values are exportable, potentially affecting recruitment into mining schools everywhere."

"This contribution presents an investigation of the evolution of shrinkage pores during hot rolling with a special focus on the microscopic mechanism. The reliable closure of pores, which inevitably occur during the casting process, is of crucial technological importance for high-quality hot rolled plate products. Therefore, lab-scale tests were carried out under different typical thermomechanical loadings. Extensive data from optical microscopy was collected before and after deformation. The analysis shows that the average volume of pores evolves similar to the volume of an idealized arrangement of voids in an ideally plastic matrix. The average shape of the shrinkage pores, however, was found to be almost constant during deformation. Even though individual pores exhibit complex morphologies far from any idealized geometries, the overall evolution of a large number of pores is well captured by simple assumptions. In addition to the quantitative analysis, a schematic representation of this counter-intuitive behavior is provided. A simple ‘Gurson’-type void evolution equation was implemented in a three-dimensional Finite-Element model of the industrial hot rolling process. With the help of this mechanism-based process simulation the thermomechanical closure of shrinkage pores during the rolling process has been optimized for a variety of plate products.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloys of the 7xxx series are widely used in the aircraft industry. They have to meet high quality standards regarding microstructure as well as mechanical properties. For hot-rolled aircraft plates, one of the most important quality requirements is that they are free from pores. Pores, however, are inevitably created during the casting process either due to shrinkage or due to the dissolution of gas from the melt. The pores have to be closed mechanically during the hot-rolling process. Therefore, the mechanism of so-called pore closure or void closure has a high technological relevance for the production of aircraft plates. The behaviour of voids in a ductile matrix subjected to mechanical deformation has been extensively studied, especially in the context of damage mechanics. A recent review (Besson et al., 2010) on modeling methods for ductile damage gives a good impression on how much experimental as well as theoretical effort has been dedicated to the problem of void evolution under mechanical loadings. Although void closure has been studied to a far lesser degree, it obeys to the same general theoretical evolution laws as void growth. The most basic theoretical result is that hydrostatic pressure drives void closure, while hydrostatic tension leads to void growth. The mechanism of void closure depends on the void shape. This is illustrated by the example of a flat penny-shaped void, which under compression obviously closes much faster than a sphere with the same volume. Theoretical models have been developed for the evolution of simplified void geometries, such as spheres or cylinders (e.g. Gurson, 1977), spheroidal (Gologanu et al., 1997) and ellipsoidal voids (Ponte-Castaneda, 1994). In industrial cast ingots, however, the pores exhibit very complex morphologies, which are far from any idealized geometry. X-ray tomography revealed ‘tortuous’ voids in a 5xxx aluminium alloy (Chaijaruwanich et al., 2006)."

"INTRODUCTION The characterization of groundwater hydrogeology is a common component in feasibility studies, geotechnical investigations and regulatory permitting for mining operations. The lithology at a location of interest may include several discrete water-bearing units; and the means of isolating each for testing can be accomplished through the use of inflatable packers. Consideration for testing during drilling program planning and communication between all stakeholders is essential to ensure that the Mine, Drilling Contractor and Hydrogeological Testing Specialist (Specialist) are ready to perform packer testing when the call is made to mobilize. Often, the notice to mobilize can be delayed and then occur with little warning due to the issues that can occur during drilling of very deep boreholes, as well as other factors. Hydrogeological investigation reports and journal articles generally discuss testing methods and results, with limited information available describing the planning and coordination of the field testing program, as evidenced by the lack of references cited below. The source of inspiration for the subject matter of this paper is grounded in the author’s past shortsightedness; with the hope that others not share similar misfortunes but experience success through thorough preparation for their future hydrogeological testing programs. The sections below focus on the planning stages of a field investigation using inflatable packers, including considerations for site specific conditions, designation of stakeholder responsibilities, and communication of testing expectations. Following these sections is a presentation of two examples of successful field programs and lessons learned in addressing problems encountered along the way. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM PLANNING & CONSIDERATIONS From the onset of planning for drilling programs, the Specialist should be in communication with the Mine to review plans and identify fatal flaws which could impede collection of hydrogeological data. Preliminary scope decisions can significantly affect the budget and duration of hydrogeological field programs and may dictate the means by which the field data is collected. The issues that need to be considered include the following factors. Testing Objectives The setup of the packer tool is dependent on the testing objectives. Is the goal to estimate bulk aquifer hydraulic conductivity or to identify discrete discontinuity hydraulic characteristics? Are groundwater samples needed? The answers to these questions affect selection of test interval length and what instrumentation might need to piggyback on the packer tool. Identifying the testing goals initially will provide adequate time to prepare packer equipment for mobilization. Borehole Size While inflatable packers come in many shapes and sizes, some sizes are more readily available and easier to procure on short notice. Packers for NQ and HQ size boreholes have been historically easy to procure and are commonly used in exploration drilling. Packer equipment is available for smaller holes, but it becomes more difficult to fit instrumentation down-hole as the borehole size decreases. This is particularly a consideration if collection of groundwater samples is required. In addition, risks of losing the hole or equipment downhole are greater for smaller boreholes. Larger boreholes require larger packers and clearly require more effort and heavier capacity machinery to manually manipulate due to the increased size."

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

The u.s. Bureau of Mines investigated electrode designs for electrowinning lead metal from a LiCl-KCl-PbCI2 electrolyte at 4500 C. The major objective of this investigation was to decrease the energy requirement for lead electrowinning. Electrolysis was performed in a bench-scale cell using several graphite electrode assemblies. Such parameters as electrode spacing, current density, and chlorine gas removal from the anode were investigated in the bench-scale tests. An optimum electrode assembly, termed the sawtooth design, was scaled up and operated at 3,000 and 4,000 A. The sawtooth electrodes operating at 3,000 A produced lead for 0.66 kW·h/kg. The electrodes were constructed by cutting large triangular grooves in the electrode surfaces. The electrodes were placed together such that the triangular peaks of one electrode projected into the triangular valleys of the other electrode. Chlorine did not build up on the anode with the sawtooth electrodes.

Paper presented at the conference on Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for <mineral deposits> in sedimentary <basins>, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle
