In the last 20 years, studies on controlled flow recirculation in various countries have been carried out in both coal and metal mines. These studies have shown that in addition to economic gains, partial flow recirculation can be used to provide mine workings distant from surface access points with the required volumes of air. These studies have also shown that the operation of fans and regulators, used in a recirculation system, will induce transients in gas flow and gas concentration. Various models have been developed to explain the problem. However, most have failed to incorporate important factors such as diffusion and dispersion in the modeling process. This study examines the theoretical background of gas emission transients from caved areas in coal mines, represents the problem by a "tank-airway" network model, and provides a possible solution. The study also presents the results gained from a laboratory model constructed to evaluate the major factors affecting the shape and duration of gas flow and gas concentration transients in an airflow recirculation system. In this model, the gas injection system was rearranged to simulate the variations in gas emission rates due to changes in air pressure. Within this model, a set of booster fans and regulators were used to generate the changes in air pressure within the model. Finally, the study presents an algorithm and a computer program GASTRAN, developed to analyze the gas concentration transients and calculate the pollutant transport levels in a complex ventilation network. The application of the program is illustrated by means of an example problem.

An improved replica technique is developed for a nondestructive study of the nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. Three different growth stages of a fatigue crack were observed. An initial stage of high growth rate is followed by a long period of very slow growth, until finally a third period of high growth rate leads to fracture. THE metal-fatigue process is of a very complex nature. The experimental approach towards fatigue is susceptible to many minor influences which, together with the unavoidable scatter in testing results, makes the interpretation a matter of extreme care. The generally accepted fact that, in a homogeneous material, the fatigue cracks start at a free surface indicates that surface studies may contri-but in an essential way to a better understanding of the fatigue mechanisms. Indeed metallographic observations of the fatigue phenomena have been very fruitful in the last decade. The study of extrusions, intrusions, and persistent slip bands has contributed much to the present knowledge of the early processes in fatigue.' The drawback of the current metallographic techniques lies in the fact, however, that either observations of fatigue phenomena had to be made in a destructive way after an only partly executed test or a sequence of observations on the same test bar was only possible on notched specimens.2 4 In both cases an uncertainty exists as to the nucleation and growth of the fatigue crack in an unnotched test bar, where the crack can start at any place of a large area and develops in a test bar, which is macroscopically

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. THE present critical state of the supply, distribution, and utilization. of coal and the necessity for pooling and zoning coals calls renewed attention to the lack of any fully adequate classification of coal. In the past coals have been classified as anthracite, semianthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous coals, and lignite, and a few special types, such as splint coal and cannel coal. But under the term bitumi¬nous coal are included a great variety of coals differing markedly both physically and chemically. The term subbituminous coal covers as great a range of chemical differences. In order to distinguish these varieties of bituminous coals it has been customary to designate coals by names derived from the place where mined, or by the name of the bed from which it is mined. Thus, in the market reports, coals are quoted as Pocahontas coal, New River or Sewell coal, Moshannon coal, Ohio coal, Williamson County coal, Jellico coal, and so on indefinitely, no limit being set as to the boundaries of the area to which a given name is applied. Nor is there any scale by, which the coal from one place may be compared with the coal from some other district or some other bed. On the one hand, coals from the same district may be quite distinct and sell at very different prices or coal from the same bed may differ greatly in different districts; on the other hand, coals from different states may be so similar physically and chemically that one could replace the other in practical use without any appreciable difference in service.

The description deals with duplex stainless cast steels and austenitic high molybdenum steels used in pumps for severe condition service. The main modem nitrogen alloyed duplex cast steels are presented in the ASTM standard A-890. Two grades of high molybdenum austenitic stainless steels there are presented in ASTM A-744 (-96) standard i.e. CN-3MN and CK-3MCuN. The latest and most corrosion- resistant stainless steel grade is AVESTA 654 SMO?. Avesta Sheffield the trademark owner has granted Ahlstrom Pumps license to produce the material. This new stainless steel as pump material for severe service has improved properties in the hydrometallurgy and electrorefining processes of metal and especially in the copper industry compared to duplex stainless steels. The paper deals briefly with the foundry process to manufacture high alloy stainless steel pump castings. The AOD-method (AOD= Argon Oxygen Decarburization) is an important prerequisite for the melting of low carbon, high chromium and molybdenum alloyed nitrogen steels. The properties of these steels are included. The main topic is the corrosion resistance of the above-mentioned pump materials in severe service. Results of short-time erosion and corrosion tests are discussed and compared with the results of plant tests. Practical results of pump materials performance in severe service for the copper industry are given. The new high alloyed cast stainless steel (main elements; Cr-24%, Ni-22%, Mo-7,3% and N-0,5%) has shown improved corrosion and erosion properties as process pump material in several severe service applications e.g. in the metal industry.

Beach sand minerals from the volcanic rock structures of the Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal, (South Africa) have been processed. Screening, flotation, spiral concentration and magnetic separation methods were used either separately or successively in an attempt to concentrate monazite minerals. Products thereof and those from a long time (up to 72 hours) microwaves treatment of the finally produced ilmenite-bearing minerals have been studied using the M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy. The 57Fe M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility and power in monitoring the ilmenite internal reduction mechanism and products and, in characterising the iron-bearing phases contained in different products from the beach sand minerals processing. Microwaves heating of ilmenite for up to 38 hours reduced internally the Fe3+ from the ilmeniteÆs structure. A more prolonged microwaves heating (up to 72 hours) re-oxidised the mineral. 61 per cent natural ilmenite recovery was obtained in the floating products of a spiral concentrated -212+106 ¦m screened and beach sand minerals fraction. A preferential concentration of hematite with a 62 per cent recovery was found in the sinking products while the combination of screening-spiral separation-magnetic separation and flotation yielded a floating product with the highest ilmenite and the highest hematite abundanceÆs (71 per cent, 19 per cent respectively). A natural ilmenite containing 87 per cent ilmenite and 13 per cent hematite could be produced and extracted from the sinking products of the flotation process collected subsequently to the spiral concentration and the initial screening.

I. INTRODUCTION THE suggestion has often been made that it would be highly desirable, at least for certain grades of steel, to be able to control more certainly, by pyrometric measurement or otherwise, the temperatures of the operation of the open-hearth and other furnaces used in the manufacture of steel and iron. That the properties of the ingot and finally of the finished steel product are intimately related to the final temperatures attained by-the metal inn the furnace and to the temperature of casting, has been recognized by metallurgists for a long time, and this question has been very thoroughly treated, especially by Prof. Henry M. Howe, and by A. W. and H. Brearley.1 It is the object of this paper to demonstrate that in so war as casting temperatures of furnaces, steel ingots, and similar operations involving the temperatures of streams of iron and steel are concerned, well-known pyrometric methods s may be easily applied-if certain recently determined corrections are made and precautions taken-with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Greater but not insurmountable difficulties will be encountered in. the case of open-hearth furnace temperatures, while for" those of the converter type a ready solution does not seem practicable. It appears that certain essential data have always been lacking in reporting observations such as those of Le Chatelier in 1892. Thus the correction to be applied for the characteristic radiation-or emissivity¬has hitherto not been adequately taken into account nor the limitations of the several possible pyrometric methods clearly recognized.

During the past decade the writer has studied and mapped certain ore deposits and their structural associations in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, New Mexico and Arizona, and he believes that these deposits, with the exception of the manto-chimney, are representative of the principal types in the area of the states named. In this paper the deposits are described; then generalizations are drawn so far as seems appropriate. Hanover, New Mexico The Hanover, New Mexico, zinc deposits were briefly described by Lindgren and others,' Paige2 and recently in more detail by Schmitt. These, the kind ordinarily called contact metamorphic, border the southern end of an oval area of granodiorite intrusive ¾ mile wide and 2 miles long (Fig. I). The granodiorite has intruded, folded, and metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks, which range in age from pre-Cambrian to Upper Cretaceous. About 90 per cent of the ore has replaced coarse, recrystallized, pure, fossiliferous, lower Mississippian, nonmagnesian limestone (Hanover limestone) 110 ft. thick;4 about 75 per cent of it occurs in the upper 50 ft. of this horizon just below an 18-ft. lower Pennsylvanian shale bed, which lies on a locally inconspicuous unconformity representing upper Mississippian time. The orebodies show five shapes or attitudes, each dependent on a special structural situation: 1. Most of the ore occurs as podlike, thick lenslike or other "three-dimensional" shoots extending from top to bottom of the Hanover limestone and lying adjacent to the outer contact of a silicate zone largely of andradite, which follows the intrusive contact (Figs. 1 and 2).

One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to really cope with them. The history of mining shows that until the last 50 years, work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated as to the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps" which was probably derived from the German word "dampf," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were as follows: Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere where a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen and which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp Flammable mixtures of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide.

In order to deal with the problems of existing comminution models a new approach towards the development of mechanistic models has been made so as to better understand the physics of milling processes and environments. Despite enormous improvement in this field a comprehensive study of rock breakage characterisation, appropriate for use in these types of models, is still scarce. This paper reviews the existing models of comminution according to ore characterisation techniques and parameters. The authors have looked into the existing testing methods and their applied mechanisms of breakage, using standard test results available at the JKMRC. The study includes classifying testing devices such as the drop weight tester, rotary breakage tester, slow compression, and piston and die based on the few major fundamental mechanisms of breakage that are experienced by rocks in the breakage process. The paper compares the range of particle size and energy utilisation, applied strain rates and loading mechanisms for the equipment. The product size distributions from the various equipment is compared for equivalent input energies, various loading rates but the same level of energy intensity, a broad range of energy including low energy utilisation and fines generation rate for equivalent specific energy input. The results clearly show that the outcomes and conclusions on competence and energy for breakage are a function of the test method that is applied. In ongoing work, it is proposed to investigate common tests that can be applied to characterising ores in a manner suited to modelling a range of comminution devices.

THE Boston and Colorado Smelting Works are situated in the town of Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, on the Clear Creek Narrow Gauge Railway, 55 miles from Denver, in the Rocky Mountains, at an altitude of 7800 feet. It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. IN 1950 Kaiser Steel Corp. acquired control of the Utah Fuel Co., a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah, and large reserves of coal elsewhere in Utah and Colorado. Kaiser Steel later disposed of the noncoking quality reserves included in the property and over the past six years has developed a group of three fully modernized mines and a central preparation plant at Sunnyside. This plant is geared to furnish 1.6 million tons per year of low ash coking coal to the byproduct coke ovens at its steel plant at Fontana, Calif., and to its beehive oven coking plant at Sunnyside. General Problems: Topographic and physical conditions under which Utah coals are found differ from those in most bituminous coal districts of the eastern and central states. Utah coal seams lie under deeper cover, generally at steeper pitches; consider- able distances are burned along the outcrop and back from the surface of the outcrop. Usually the coal seams lie high up on escarpments, accessible only through deep narrow canyons or long rock tunnels and tramways. The topography at Sunnyside is particularly rough, with great changes in cover over the coal in relatively short horizontal distances. This is due to the cliff-making sandstones of the cretaceous Mesa Verde group, the coal-bearing measures being in the Blackhawk formation. The thick massive Castle Gate sandstone of the Prince River formation overlies the coal-bearing rocks and is suspected to be the chief cause of roof control problems.

Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.

A study of the precipitation-hardening of copper steels1 led the authors to investigate malleable iron containing copper, for the low-carbon ferritic matrix in malleable iron should lend itself admirably to precipitation-hardening. It was soon found that in addition to rendering malleable iron susceptible to improvement by precipitation-hardening treatments, copper has another potentially useful effect as an accelerator of graphitization. Brief mention of these effects was given in a general paper by Lorig and one of the present authors2; the present paper gives further details on the graphitization and precipitation-hardening effects only. After the completion of this work a paper by L. Lykkin3 appeared, confirming the authors' conclusions regarding graphitization. Material Used After some preliminary heats had been made in the laboratory to determine the effect of copper, several castings from commercial air-furnace heats were obtained, and data from these alone are given here. Part of the metal was poured directly and part was treated in the ladle with the desired amount of copper before pouring. Green-sand molds were used, each holding two tensile test pieces of the form adopted by the Malleable Iron Research Institute, or two bars for graphitization studies, 5/8 in, in diameter and 9 in. long, fed through two enlarged sections equidistant from the middle and ends of the bars. Risers of suitable size insured sound castings. Tensile tests were made on the castings after commercial mallealleizing and after special heat treatments to be described. The analyses of the white irons are given in Table 1.

Production of sound bronze castings is a matter of great practical interest to users and manufacturers of high-grade non-ferrous engineering specialties. Although there has been much excellent research in this field, there still remains some confusion regarding the fundamental principles underlying production of really sound bronze. The literature of the past 20 years on this subject indicates that the prevailing opinion of metallurgists and foundrymen has been that unsoundness in bronze is due generally to oxidation. The following references are typical. Review of Literature Carpenter and Edwards1 state that when gun metal is melted the alloy dissolves gas, the amount increasing with rise in temperature and duration of the melting. The solubility of the gas diminishes during the fall in temperature and it escapes through the liquid metal. At the moment of incipient solidification there is an evolution of gas. Sperry2 says that by using charcoal a reducing atmosphere is supplied whereby oxidation is prevented, and this also prevents gases from coming in contact with the metal. Logan3 says that many of the troubles that occur in non-ferrous castings are the direct result of one thing—oxidized material. He mentions how readily copper absorbs oxygen when molten, but does not mention the harmful effects of reducing conditions as observed in overpoled copper. Guillemin and Delachana14 investigated the gases occluded in bronze and found that the better bronzes contained mostly hydrogen while the poorer ones had a larger proportion of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Two independent sets of observations from rifted con-tinental margins suggest a way to reach a quantitative under-standing of how the topography of rifted margins erodes. First, a prominent erosional escarpment, which demarcates an elevated, inland region of low relief from rugged, deeply-incised terrain on the seaward side, is the main feature of the geomorphology of many rifted continental margins. Second, apatite fission track ages from the southeast Australian and southwest Saudi Arabian margins scatter about constant Paleozoic ages over the higher elevations inland from the escarpment, but decrease systematically seaward of the escarpment to near-rifting ages approaching the coastlines. We have developed erosion models based on conservation of mass principles to explain these observations. These models seek to explain the "rejuvenation" of erosion at the time of rifting, initiation of the observed erosional escarpment, and its migration inland with time at a rate on the order of 1 km/10 yr. We find from the modeling that erosion at rift flanks and passive margins is fundamentally a non-linear pro-cess. The erosional development of passive margin topogra-phy has much is common with travelling wave solutions to non-linear diffusion-type problems, and to self-similar sto-chastic processes, such as diffusion-limited aggregation. We suggest that the fission track data record the thermal effects of erosional unroofing at rift flanks and passive continental margins. Models intended to explain the erosional develop-ment of continental margins must explain both the geomor-phology and the fission track observations as well.
