The PC version of the program MFIRE contains many improvements and enhancements previously unavailable for the modeling of mine ventilation networks and the interaction of fires with mine ventilation Transient-state simulation with dynamic modifications of the ventilation system and mine, the fire, and resulting POC transport and ventilation alterations are accommodated with MFIRE. MFIRE is more flexible and provides more error checking, and more informational messages about prob¬lems with input files than its predecessor, the MTU-BOM code The desirable features of the MTU-BOM code such as calculation and identification of recirculation, the air to rock heat exchange, and the basing of calculations on mass flow rates have been retained. Solidification processing/casting is increasingly being adopted as the preferred manufacturing technique for the fabrication of net shaped complex geometry components. Modeling of solidification processes is important both for design purposes as well as for understanding the physics of morphological evolution of the solidification microstructure. A fundamental aspect of such modeling involves the precise understanding? of heat transfer through the two phase solid/liquid region. A scheme to do this will be presented where the nonlinearity of the fraction liquid with change in temperature can be incorporated into the numerical calculations. The importance of properly accounting for the non-linear mushy zone will be discussed. Typical processes like squeeze casting and electromagnetic stirring will be discussed to illustrate how precise modeling of the solid/liquid region can aid in the calculation of accurate heat transfer coefficients for these processes.

Introduction Charles III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, established one of the first mining schools in Europe on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbanya (Schemnitz in German and Banska Stiavmica in Slovakian). The old city, built around the ancient gold mines, is shown in a contemporary engraving in Fig. 1. Charles' historical decree consisted of 13 chapters and included: the deed of foundation, the definition of grants, instruction for educational policy and curriculum, disciplinary rules, and the appointment of personnel. The first professor of the school, Samuel Mikoviny, gave his first lecture the same year, in December 1735. The 250th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Mines was celebrated Sept. 2-4, 1985, in Miskolc. It was attended by representatives of other Hungarian and of several foreign technical universities. A silver medallion (Fig. 2) was issued to commemorate the occasion and a series of lectures

This paper describes the results of a study carried out to examine the feasibility of electrolytic recovery of silver from cyanide leach liquor generated from a Western Australian silver mine tailings using a novel high mass transfer electrowinning cell. The proposed circuit involves heap leaching and electrowinning in a closed loop. The filter-press-like closed electrode arrangement of the cell allowed much improved mass transfer of metal ions to the cathode surface, making direct electrowinning of metals from dilute solutions feasible. The tests were conducted both in the laboratory and at large scale using a prototype with ~1.0 m2 cathode area. The results showed that the recovery of silver from as low as 250 mg L-1tenor was feasible. The silver deposit produced with the prototype cell was non-adherent and powdery and could be readily removed from the closed cell. A system was developed so that silver powder was discharged continuously during the run.

The paper gives an assessment of the available data on the linear elastic fracture mechanics involved in stress corrosion cracking and in the behaviour of reactor pressure-vessel materials exposed to a simulated pressurized water-reactor environment. As a result of the different experimental techniques used in the various studies mentioned, only a few detailed conclusions can be drawn. The data from constant-displacement wedge-opening loading (WOL) tests, with the exception of one study, exhibited very limited or no crack extension during exposure periods of up to 14000 hours. The data from constant-load tests indicated evidence of crack extension, but the nature and extent of the crack extension are still unclear. When crack extension did occur, it was exclusively transgranular in nature. Certain differences in the available test data are tentatively explained in terms of the experimental procedures used, and the need for a consistent code of experimental techniques is highlighted.

The largest area of high-grade cannel coals known in America is doubtless found in eastern Kentucky. Notwithstanding the popular belief to the contrary, there is no reason to doubt that these eastern Kentucky cannel-fields, following the general rule, will be uncertain and treacherous. But, taken in the aggregate, their extent is very great. The principal service to which cannel coal can be put is enriching illuminating-gas. The electric light has, to a certain extent, created a demand for better gas, and has increased the market for gas-enrichers. Before the discovery of rock-oil, coal-oil was distilled from cannel coal and cannel shale. This business was getting fairly started when the cheaper rock-oil, or petroleum, overcame it, and the great distilleries went into disuse and ruin. Now, again, the chief competitor with cannel coal is oil, namely, the cheap oil of Lima, Ohio. Under proper treatment the vile odor of this oil can be removed.

Manganese ore from the Black Rock, Kramer, and Black Jack mines in Tooele and Jaub Counties, Utah, are of acceptable grade, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has announced. Payment of a premium price of 252¢ per lb to the Copper Range Co., of Michigan for the output of its White Pine mine, has been agreed to by the DMPA. The contract will be limited to $28.6 million worth of copper. The agreement follows an RFC loan grant of $57 million to bring the White Pine property into production within three years. Increases of 5 to 6 cents over the Lake copper ceilings have been granted to the Calumet & Helca Consolidated Copper Co., for operation of "high cost" deposits, according to Jess Larson, DMPA administrator. Mr. Larson expects the move to add about one million lb of copper per month to the supply. The agreement can be cancelled on 60 days notice and is terminated automatically in the event copper ceilings are removed.

New Mangalore Port is the most important port in Karnataka State, on the west coast of India on Arabian Sea. It handles export of iron ore, granite, coffee, spices etc and imports of crude oil, fertilizers etc. Since 1991, after economic liberalisation by the Government of India, the exports and imports at this port got a boost. Hence the Port Trust felt the need to increase the draught by about 3 to 5 meters for access to bigger ships. In response to a global tender in 1995, the Dutch Dredging Company got the contract to remove 30,000 cu.m of hard granite bed rock, covering 28,000 sq.mtr. area for the Turning Circle and oil Jetty. The operations of drilling, blasting and dredging were to be carried out to deepen the area to about 15 m draught without affecting the normal trade at the Port. This was a time bound contract to avoid interruption by severe Monsoon rains.

Success for underground coal mine operators in the 1990's and beyond will be dependent upon better understanding of the dynamics of their operating environment, and extension of emerging technologies to reach new levels of output and productivity. The Collieries Division of B.H.P. Steel International Group clearly identifies with the concept of business/product life cycles - and the need to adopt strategies that can drive the business successfully into the future. Three main thrusts within BHP Collieries Division relate to: 1) Detailed assessment of current mines to determine: a) The real output potential of the current facilities. b) What factors now inhibit the full potential from being realised. c) Opportunities that exist to enhance overall mine performance. 2) Based upon the findings of these studies, putting into place cost effective strategies and systems for the ongoing "tuning" of the mine. 3) of new/improved technology primarily in areas of: a) Coal cutting and underground coal clearance. b) Controlling the overall mine gas Regime.

Large scale rhyolitic volcanism is an important process at some convergent plate margins because it leads to chemical differentiation of the upper.-crust and is responsible for the production of long lived near surface thermal anomalies; the Taupo Volcanic Zone is.a Quaternary example. The main features of the magmatic systems-of the zone. are the existence of large high level chambers containing homogeneous silicic magma which erupt at intervals of thousands to tens of thousands of years. Geochemical work on the deposits resulting from these eruptions has shown that with few exceptions the magmas have been remarkably uniform in their . composition throughout the history of the zone although individual batches with lifespans of the order of. one hundred thousand years can be recognised by subtle differences in trace element ratios. Basalt is a rare proportion of the rocks exposed at the surface but has played a major role as a medium for heat transfer and as an end member in chemical mixing processes.

The marvel is that little streaks of valuable metal are ever uncovered by the few men who roam that tre-mendous, almost unexplored area that is the "North Country." The area to be explored is so immense, and the men who can do it so few, that once they leave the "steel," take their canoes and packs, and disappear into the bush, they may travel the innumerable watercourses that are the highways of the wilderness for days or weeks, and never see one of their own kind. This paper deals with the development of the cut-and-fill mining method at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province of South Africa. Lead, copper, zinc, and silver are produced. Production started in January 1976, being confined to blasthole production methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is 70 per cent depleted, and pillar extraction is in progress. The balance of the production tonnage, 60 kt per month, is produced from three cut-and-fill stopes situated in the flatter-dipping areas of the orebody. The cut-and-fill mining method at Black Mountain is a result of research and planning activities that included the use of modelling, laboratory tests, mathematical analyses, in situ tests, and experience gained from other mining operations. These investigations and the resulting developed methods and designs are summarized in the paper.

It is, as the author says, a modification of the apparatus designed by Dr. Rosenhain, but it is evidently quite an; improvement. The author is to be congratulated on the fact that lie has given us, with his apparatus, a quantitative thermal analysis of these critical points. I notice the author refers to Ac3, Ac2, and Ac1. His designation of the Ac2 point is all right, but naturally in a steel with as much carbon as this, which would mean a hypereutectic steel, the other point might better be considered as an Ac, point with possibly another point above the Ac, point. Another important point brought out is the fact that, in Fig. 3, the lines representing the Ar1, transformation and the Ac,1_3 transformation do not intersect at the zero rate curve,

I have attended two Explosives Engineers’ Conferences in the past 4 years. The first was in Brighton, England with the European Federation of Explosives Engineers in 2005 and the International Society of Explosives Engineers in New Orleans, USA in 2008. At both of these conferences I listened to papers presented on European and English training methodologies and ideologies. As I have been training Shotfirers for the past 18 years in Queensland and the Northern Territory for some 8 years previously, I would like to present our methods of training in Queensland, which I believe is among the best in the world. In Queensland, this training is carried out by a training organisation that is registered by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts under the guidelines of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). Not only is this Registered Training Organisation (RTO) required to operate under these very comprehensive guidelines, but also those designated by the Explosives Inspectorate of the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy.

Investigators have reported that charges which are decoupled from the borehole wall produce different fragmentation then those which are fully coupled. The difference in effect could be as a result of energy doss during transmission across the air gap or it could be due to the change in detonation characteristics of the explosive as a result of the change in confinement on the charge during detonation. In order to better understand the phenomena of decoupling, a research project was conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Station, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was decided to use shock and bubble energy tests along with simultaneous velocity measurement to determine the mechanics of decoupling and energy transmission. Two explosives were selected for the test, one dynamite and one water gel. Test results indicated that decoupling could both boost the total energy output of the explosive and that further decoupling would drop the energy output.

A study has been made of the crushing and grinding circuits by the Portland Cement Association in nine cement plants. Five of the plants used the wet process and four, the dry method. Both raw and clinker grinding were studied in the four dry processing plants. The raw materials used varied considerably from plant to plant. Actual power consumption data were obtained for the majority of the grinding mills in these plants. Previously representative raw and clinker samples had been obtained from the nine plants, and Bond1 and Hardgrove2 grindability tests were run on these samples. All pertinent data concerning the grinding mills, such as mill size and speed, ball charge size and weight, size distribution of feed, and discharge materials were also obtained. Thus it became possible to calculate the actual horsepower used by the various mills, and to compare this figure to the theoretical horsepower as calculated by several different methods.

The spinel-added and in-situ spinel bonded castables have been developed and widely used in steel industry. It is challenging to develop magnesia-based castables for the non-ferrous industry because the temperatures in industrial furnaces are significantly lower than those in the steel industry and therefore the binding systems of these castables must have the capability to develop a ceramic matrix below 1300°C. It is also challenging to develop a good binding system without addition of fume silica, because the hydration of magnesia may take place during installation, curing and firing of the castables. This work presents the experimental results on developing magnesia-based cement-free, silica fume-free refractory castables using hydratable alumina as the hydraulic binder and a spinel phase as the final ceramic binder. In order to activate the sintering and have a ceramic matrix well developed at the relatively low required temperatures, ultrafine aluminas, chromia, magnesium-aluminate spinel and aluminum titanate powders were used as components of the binding system.
