Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

Mathematical simulation of reservoir behavior may be used to help understand reservoir processes and to predict reservoir behavior, thereby leading to the most economically desirable form of exploitation. In addition, simulation can be used as a tool for reservoir description to learn more about the physical nature of the reservoir and the mode of primary recovery. This use is essential in most reservoir studies and represents one of the more significant applications of simulation. Prediction of reservoir behavior provides information concerning displacement efficiency, optimum well locations, and the comparison of alternative producing processes. Since oil, water and gas all commonly occur in many reservoirs, a simulation that takes into account the simultaneous flow of three immiscible phases is a prerequisite for obtaining such information. Furthermore, a simulation that describes this flow in two dimensions provides the capability of evaluating combination gas- and water-drive reservoirs with either an areal or a cross-sectional description. Many reservoir problems require such a simulation. The objective of the research described here was to develop a mathematical model and associated computer program for accurate, efficient, and economical prediction of the reservoir flow of three phases in two-dimensional geometry. Several authors have discussed multidimensional reservoir simulation of two phases.l-3 Gottfried et al.' presented an analy- sis of three-phase simulation in one dimension. Fagin and Stewart" and Garrett6 have discussed the simulation of three-phase flow in two dimensions, but their solution techniques were different from the method discussed in this paper. In particular, previous models and computer programs have usually involved either fewer capabilities or inefficient and less rigorous descriptions resulting in limited applicability. In the following sections, we present a description of the model, an evaluation of the method, and the application to reservoir problems. Additional and supporting material is presented in the Appendix. The Three-Phase Model General Description The three-phase model consists of the mathematical description of the flow of oil, water and gas in a reservoir. Conceptually this description considers flow in all three space dimensions, but in the subject simulator it is assumed that no flow occurs in the third dimension. The model includes the effects on reservoir behavior of fluid and rock compressibility, viscosity, gravity, capillary pressure, relative permeability and gas solubility. Within the two-dimensional restriction, the reservoir considered may be completely heterogeneous and anisotropic. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions, in which two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, presents two basic problems. First, good completion practices require an eficient perforator that leaves no debris to interfere with subsequent completion operations. Second, and of more complicated nature, a system is needed for controlling the direction of fire so that adjacent strings are not damaged. Development of of a 2-in. OD, steel retrievable, shnped-charge gun has solved the first problem. The second was resolved through development of three different devices to provide directional perforating for the two types of completion methods being employed today. These include a mechanical orienting device and two self-orienting radiation devices. Conceivably, the latter methods could be adapted to the directional perforating (of .upper zones) of conventional dual and triple completions without removing production tubing and packers. INTRODUCTION The recent trend to multiple tubingless completions,' wherein two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, has presented two basic perforating problems. The first problem to be overcome was the design of a gun that would result in efficient perforations without causing debris to bridge in these small-diameter casings. The second problem was, of course, to devise a system for controlling the direction of fire such that adjacent strings would not be damaged. The problem of gun debris in slim-casing completions has been well defined in the numerous 27/8-in. single tubingless completions which have been effected during recent years with the expendable-type perforators. Failure of expendable-gun debris to settle out properly, even with good gun break-up, has resulted in bridging inside these small-diameter casings. This, in turn, has interfered with completion and re-conditioning operations. The past two years have clearly shown, in fact, that debris problems are not confined to this small range of casing with most designs of expendable-type guns. A high incidence of bridging has even been reported in 4%-in. OD casing. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions has entailed, therefore, the development of a completely debris-free gun of adequate performance, as well as the necessary devices to provide positive directional perforating in the two completion methods presently being employed. THE GUN —DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The design of a shaped-charge gun for slim-casing perforating has presented a maze of interrelated prob-lems. Since the primary specification has been leveled at efficient charge performance with complete elimination of gun debris, it has been necessary to develop a retrievable steel-carrier gun of tubular construction to house the charges. The carrier must be retrievable through 2.29-in. API pump-seating nipples which are usually installed in 2 7/8-in. strings. To provide for recovery of the gun from the well, swelling of the carrier on firing must be carefully controlled. Control of swelling automatically means control of explosive weight in the shaped charge which, in turn, influences charge performance. Carrier swelling also depends upon the confinement pressure at the level being perforated, which imposes a hydrostatic pressure-depth limitation. Burr interference on the wall of the carrier, resulting from passage of the jet through the carrier wall, must be eliminated by suitable design. Clearly then, a satisfactory shaped-charge gun design for slim-casing operations represents a fine balance between carrier swelling, hydrostatic pressure, explosive weight and charge performance. "Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. The districts are1ocated on the southern extension of the Sawatch uplift, a prorninent northwest-trending structural high. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. """Preg-robbing"" of gold by carbonaceous matter during the cyanidation of certain types of carbonaceous gold ores is well documented. Recent studies established that ""preg-robbing"" of gold is not limited to carbonaceous matter. Gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite grains was detected and quantified by TOF-LIMS (Time of Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Crystallites of pyrite from a number of ores from different geological environments have been shown to have gold on their surface apparently sorbed from the ore forming solutions. Surface gold accounts for significant fractions of the gold head assay. Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant cyanide solutions was also documented, and accounts for significant losses to tailings. Preventative measures are discussed.1.0 IntroductionThe detection and subsequent quantification of gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite particulates came about during routine determinations of the deportment of gold employing the comprehensive mineralogical approach (Chryssoulis and Cabri, 1990). In some pyritic gold ores it was discovered that the sum of the various forms in which gold ""conventionally"" occurs, was short of the gold assay. The mineralogical procedure used involves the independent determination of each fraction of gold, in other words there is no form of gold which is calculated ""by difference"". The systematic shortfall after having added the forms of gold listed in Table 1 led to the inquiry for the 'missing' gold and its discovery on the surface of pyrite grains, such as crystal facets and fractured surfaces.Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant solutions was first described by Lloyd. In his studies, preg-robbing was measured by changes in the solutions/solids gold assays. This paper describes the first application of a direct measurement method for surface gold on pyrite particles from untreated and processed samples, its impact on gold deportment and processing. The advantage of the direct measurement lies in the absence of interference from other forms of gold, leading to more accurate and precise determinations of this unconventional form of gold."

A complete chemical analysis of the waste showed that it contains 15.64% P2O5; X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that it is composed mainly of francolite, calcite, pyrite, quartz and dolomite. The phosphate values were recovered and the settling rate of the wastes enhanced by the use of hydrocyclone and flocculation techniques. The hydrocyclone produced an underflow enriched in phosphate and an overflow enriched in clays. The former represented 39.8% by weight of the phosphatic clay waste and assayed 26% P2O5 at a recovery of 66.36%. The results of flocculation of the phosphatic clay waste showed that both the degree and rate of settling were increased and that the process water could be recycled. The settling rate was 37 times greater when anionic polyacrylamide A130 was used

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

"A self-tramming remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) was developed by J. H. Fletcher and Co. under a contract with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) to reduce exposure of miners to airborne dust. NIOSH OMSHR laboratory testing showed that the DS averaged greater than 95% dust removal efficiency with the disposable filters and averaged 88% and 90%, respectively, for the optional washable filters in their pre-washed and post-washed test conditions. Although the washable filters could be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-minute washing period. The DS’s velocity pressure regulated variable frequency drive (VFD) fan maintained a relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.43 and 4.25 m3/s (3000 and 9000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60 Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the DS also showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier and the loaded filters increased sound levels as compared to clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity (1). The DS’s washable filters were not used during field testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated from filter washing. Field testing the DS with the disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it can clean a portion of the section return air and provide about a 50% dust reduction at the face area downstream of the continuous miner (CM) operation. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to coal and quartz dust continues to be a problem at underground coal mining operations in the U.S. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) recently changed the standard for coal mine worker respirable dust exposure from 2.0 mg/m3 average during an eight-hour shift to 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift, effective as of August 1, 2016 (1). If more than 0.1 mg/m3 quartz mass is found in the coal mine worker dust sample, the applicable respirable dust standard is further reduced to the quotient of 10 divided by the percentage of the quartz in the sample (1). Over 90% of the mechanized mining units operating in U.S. underground coal mines are continuous mining machines (2). MSHA inspector dust samples from 2009 to 2012 showed that 3.7% of continuous miner operators exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard, while 8.8% of these dust samples exceeded the new 1.5 mg/m3 dust standard and 9.7% of these samples exceeded the reduced quartz standard (3). Additionally, roof bolter dust samples at these mechanized mining units during this same period have exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3, 1.5 mg/m3, and reduced quartz levels at 1.1%, 3.7%, and 10.6%, respectively (3)."

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. "Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. "In recent years, use of mineral processing tailings as a paste backfill has been significantly increased due to the environmental problems occurred during the disposal of the tailings in mine area. The paste material used to fill the stopes excavated is generally consisted of tailings (solid ratio: 70–85%) and cement (3-7%w/w). Meanwhile, the strength of the paste material is completely related to ratios of these materials. Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) system is used as support depending on the roof pressure and also as an underground disposal method. Therefore, temporary strength value of the paste material gains a great importance. For example, the paste backfill material must compensate the minimum 4 MPa strength value in order to procure the permanent fortification, and the mixture cost must be minimal as well. For this reason, in this study, the Pb-Zn tailings were used to prepare for the paste backfill material using cement in order to perform the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests. Additionally, a statistical experimental design and linear programming techniques was used to find the optimum mixture in terms of strength and cost. The pulp solid ratios (PSR) of the tailings and cement (by the solid) were varied as 75-85% and 3-8%, respectively. The results of this study; the optimum mixture is ~79.5%PSR and 6.8% cement ratio (by the solid) for 4 MPa UCS (28 day) and 16-17 cm slump value determined by this method with statistically reviewed experimental data. INTRODUCTION Fine-grained tailing waste materials resulting from mining activities are an important environmental problem. In terms of environmental protection, the use of tailings with paste backfill is a very attractive approach and a desirable solution to tailings management. Paste backfill, which is used to fill underground openings, is made by primarly mine tailings mixed with hydraulic binders and water. Its main benefits are not only disposal of mine tailings in underground, but also providing a certain strength to ensure a safe working environment. Therefore, it is necessary to use hydraulic binders due to durability of the system (Benzaazoua et al., 2004). Paste backfill, formed from the mix of dewatered plant tailings (75-85 wt. % solids), water and binder (3-8 wt. %) (Brackebusch, 1994; Landriault et al., 2005).Water is used to determine the chemical reactions between tailing and binder materials for strength as well as increasing pumpability. Portland cement and ash can be used as binder materials (Douglas and Malhotra, 1987). The factors which affect strength and stability of paste backfill separate into two groups called interior and exterior factors. Interior and exterior factors determine the strength, stability and deformation features of backfill in short and long terms and also affect the transportation of backfill to underground (Benzaazoua et al., 2004; Erçikdi et al., 2006; Yilmaz et al., 2010; Nasir and Fall, 2010). Material properties of tailings as well as site operations to fill the underground openings are the most important steps for the design purposes. Grain size distribution, chemical, and physical properties of tailings, and mechanical properties of paste fill material are used to understand the suitability of tailings as paste fill material (Ozturk et al., 2014). In addition, Fig. 1. is also proposed to apply a typical design for the operational stages of paste fill applications on the site."

You have been involved with research activities in froth flotation and size reduction. What do you think the future holds for these technologies? Froth flotation and size reduction are essential processing steps common to almost all current mineral-processing operations. The most significant recent advances in both of these technologies have been in the increased size of equipment and in some alternative machine designs, such as the column cells and the high-pressure roller mills. I believe that the next major area of improvement in size reduction will be at least partially driven by an improved awareness of controlling the conditions that influence the efficiency of particle breakage. This would include factors such as water-chemistry influences, the influence of fines from classification, chemical grinding additives and better rheology control. In froth flotation, significant changes are currently taking place in the plant use of frothers. Also, there will be an increasing number of new collector chemistries for certain types of flotation, such as with oxide minerals, oxidized mineral recovery in sulfide systems and improved selectivity with certain sulfide mineral systems. You have been active in implementing new engineering technology in industry. What do you think will be the technological future of mineral processing? Being involved in the invention and industrial implementation of new technology has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. I also have had the unique experience of working in the chemical and petroleum industries as well as in mineral processing. In my opinion, the future of mineral processing will be an exciting, wonderful work area in which to be involved. The development of new technology in minerals processing offers a special challenge compared, for example, to that of chemistry or chemical engineering. In successful industrial innovation involving minerals, having a sound theory is not enough. Instead, what is required is a valid blend of a good idea, meaningful laboratory characterization and, most key, the experience necessary to adjust the plant in such a way to incorporate the idea. The complexity of engineering systems that contain solids, liquids and gases, as well as highly variable natural mineral properties, means that nothing new comes easily. In some cases, it has been difficult to explain how processes practiced in industry for decades actually work, in terms of physical and chemical fundamentals. On the other hand, when a new idea is successfully implemented, the economic and professional returns can be very rewarding. I know of no more challenging field of engineering than minerals processing. What is your view of the future of the minerals industry in general? The need for minerals, metals and coal will be with us for decades to come. In many aspects, the minerals industry became global much earlier than some of the other industrial sectors that are currently experiencing globalization. I believe that fair international competition is beneficial to the users of minerals, metals and coals and to those involved in producing such materials. The key word here for a global economy to work is "fair." So the various playing fields involved such as finance, profit return, regulation and labor should be relatively level for all the players involved. Competition is an amazing driving force for innovation. This has been true in the minerals industry during the last few decades. The mining industry is producing more at less cost per unit than ever before in our history. I anticipate that this trend will continue as long as the global political situation remains relatively stable.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam

"Two analytical closed-form elastic-rigid-plastic solution methods to predict the rigid foundation behaviour on stone-column reinforced soil are compared, both of which takes into account the stone material yield within the host soil according to stress-dilatancy theory. These are the mechanistic methods developed by the author (2004, 2005) [that presently incorporates the dilatancy angle as per Schanz and Vermeer (1996)] and that developed by Pulko and Majes (2006), that takes into account the column yield as per Rowe dilatancy theory. Since optimal design of stone column necessitates optimum stress concentration on column, which is generally composed of dense gravel with/or without sand, the vertical stress on granular column is often close to its peak strength and the material dilates. To arrive at closed-form analytic solution to this complex soil-stone column interaction problem, some common assumptions like axi-symmetric soilstone column ‘unit-cell’, elastic host soil and rigid-plastic Mohr-Coulomb stone column material are combined with equilibrium and kinematic conditions. The results reflect the beneficial effect of dilatancy within the optimal range or techno-economic domain of area-ratio. The settlement predictions are compared with other analytical methods available in literature as well as with measured settlement reduction of stonecolumn reinforced ground at different subsoil conditions around the globe reported in literature.INTRODUCTIONStone columns or granular piles are frequently used in stabilization of soft clays, silts and loose silty-sands with large amount of fines. The majority of analytical methods assume infinitely wide loaded area with end-bearing columns having constant diameter and spacing that approximate to axi-symmetric conditions, and the approach is known as ‘unit-cell concept’. Several analytical solutions are available, and many of them (Aboshi et al; 1979, Balaam & Booker; 1981) are based on elastic approach considering the stonecolumn and surrounding soil as elastic materials. However, elastic methods give the ratio between the vertical stress in the column to soil (stress concentration factor) approximately equal to the ratio of constrained modulus of both materials. This ratio was found to be considerably higher than measured in the field and it is believed that elastic methods may overestimate the effects of stone columns on settlement reduction (Barksdale & Bachus, 1983). The elastic and elasto-plastic solutions presented by Balaam and Booker (1981, 1985) indicate that the problem can be idealized by assuming that the stone column is in a triaxial state and possibly yielding, such that there is no shear stress at the stone-soil interface and no yielding in the soil. Similar assumptions of stone column to be in a state of limiting equilibrium and under a triaxial stress state are considered in other methods also (Priebe; 1976, Van Impe & De Beer; 1983, Van Impe & Madhav; 1992, Saha & De; 1994, Saha; 2004, 2005, Pulko & Majes; 2006). In majority of the methods it is assumed that under load the stone-column yields at constant volume. However, the last three cases cited consider another parameter; the dilation of stone column. In Van Impe and Madhav’s (1992) and author’s (2004, 2005) method, the dilation is taken into account through the final value of the volumetric strain of column, whereas Pulko & Majes (2006) considered the stone column as Mohr-Coulomb rigid-plastic; dilating at yield in line with Rowe (1962) dilatancy theory."
