The housing of labor and sanitation at mines in India are difficult problems to solve because-no more than two or three castes will accept the same conditions, and conditions suitable to one coal-field are not applicable to other fields. It is also necessary to consider the financial standing of the different companies. The European companies, which pay 30 per cent. and more dividends, can erect more suitable houses than the Indian companies, which are just able to keep their heads above water. The Santhal will not live in a bucca-roofed house as a permanent dwelling, and both the Santhal and Koras have an aversion to living in a line of attached huts. They have forsaken a whole, line of houses in one of which a case of sickness or death has occurred, and those houses were afterward considered unfit by all other classes of natives. The Santhals, Koras, and Douri castes will not take drinking water from a stand pipe; wells must be furnished. When well water is not available, these people will take water from the nearest pool or tank regardless of whether or not the water is stagnant. The well tops should not he completely enclosed, nor should there be a drain around the top. The ground should slope away from the well. In the Girieih coal fields, the miners have a great objection to pucca floors; they prefer earth which is lapped, easily cleaned, and renewed. As it is customary for the miner to build his own house, the company supplying the roofing material, he takes a special interest in it, keeps it in order, and hesitates to leave it. Each house is surrounded by its own bit of land, which the inmate cultivates.

"This paper compares thermodynamic modelling results with those obtained for copper sulphide removal from aqueous solution in both continuous and batch experiments at laboratory scale. Sulphide precipitation has been demonstrated to be an effective method for heavy metal removal. The advantages are the high degree of metal removal at low pH, low quantities of sludge formation, the ease of de-watering and low reactor retention time due to high reactivity of sulphides. However, the low solubility of sulphide species can lead to spontaneous nucleation of fines, which are difficult to remove.Theoretical modelling was carried out using ASPEN Plus™ and OLI systems Inc ESP process. Both simulators were used to calculate copper sulphide recovery and residual aqueous copper concentrations as a function of pH. The predictions were then compared with experimental results. Both simulations predicted that all of the inlet copper would precipitate as sulphide CuS(s) over the entire range of pH and sulphide: copper molar ratios investigated. The simulation results were strongly influenced by the number of chemical species and the nature of the thermodynamic data taken into account in the model.The continuous experimental studies were carried out in a fluidised bed reactor (FBR). Copper sulphate was reacted with sodium sulphide and the solid precipitated directly onto the pellets in the FBR. The use of sulphide was motivated by high sulphate levels in local acid mine drainage and the ultimate integration of the metal removal process with a biological sulphate reducing process that produces an aqueous sulphide stream.A maximum dissolved copper removal of 99.6% (AAS analysis) and a total removal efficiency of 95.8% (dissolved copper minus fines) were achieved. Stoichiometry of the precipitate was determined from SEM/EDAX analysis (atomic percentages) and was close to 1/1, irrespective of the operating conditions."

It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method used to determine the corundum contents of samples of hard crystalline gneiss containing both corundum and red garnet. A chemical analysis of the rock for alumina would not fix the amount of corundum became at least three other constituent minerals of the rock, mica, feldspar, and garnet, contain alumina combined with silica. Following are the principal minerals found in the samples, together with their specific gravity and hardness as given by Dana: The corundum occurred in crystals of a gray or bluish gray color, in minute grains and coarser up to 0.5 in., and no massive or block corundum was observed. The larger crystals were commonly quite slender, well defined, and the normal hexagonal form clearly developed. They lay with the structural planes of the gneiss, and sometimes appeared prominently in relief on weathered surfaces. In some cases these crystals had suffered partial or total alteration to mica, margarite, or other soft minerals, a condition illustrated by sample D, which appeared to be studded abundantly with corundum on the flat faces. Garnet, a striking feature of nearly all the samples, was present in small rounded crystals of a pink to red color. The samples were first broken to pass a No. 4 mesh screen. This was done with a hammer on an iron plate, particular care being taken to avoid the breaking of the crystals finer than need be to pass the screen. A portion of the sample weighing 500 g. was then taken and, with a little water added, was scoured round and round in an iron bucket with a wooden block, until the coarse crystals of corundum were cleaned of adhering pieces of mica. THE hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, [t] but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. THE PROCESS Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

"The Inco Matte Separation process was the first commercial application using mineral processing techniques to separate nickel from copper from a slow-cooled matte in Sudbury since 1945. In Inco Sudbury operations, bulk sulphide concentrate containing chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite and some gangue minerals is flash smelted and converted to Bessemer matte. During the controlled slow-cooling of the Bessemer matte, discrete mineral grains of new mineral phases are formed: copper sulfide precipitates as chalcocite (Cu2S), nickel sulfide as heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is also formed. Flotation is employed to separate Cc from Hz under high lime conditions (pH>12) with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother.A simplified matte separation flowsheet is as follows. After grinding, the Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is removed by magnetic separation. All precious metals are recovered in the metallic alloy. Following the rougher flotation, a Cu concentrate is produced after cleaner and re-cleaner flotation in mechanical and column cells. Two Ni concentrates are produced: a high-grade Ni product containing less than 0.8% Cu from the scavenger column tails and a low-grade Ni product containing 5% Cu from the middlings circuit tails. A stream containing the inseparable Cc and Hz from the middlings circuit is generated and recycled back to the smelter. The quantity of this stream is typically about 3% of total feed and can be as high as 5%, greatly decreasing the overall matte separation efficiency. The large mass of the recycle stream is a direct result of poor Cc/Hz separation selectivity in the middlings circuit. The middlings circuit, consisting of a thickener, a regrind mill and two columns, processes two streams: cleaner tailings and scavenger concentrates. The thickener contributes significantly to oxidation due to the long residence time of the pulp in this unit."

Describes important developments in, four counties, all of which brought in 40° oil. Indications are favorable for the future, although the daily production of the agate decreased 19,000 bbl. during the year 1923. THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Green-. wood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R, 11. The main part of. this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in. 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28, 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools, have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in. depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to the west. The thickness of these sands runs from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl. of 40-gravity oil or better.

"The creep properties of tin-based lead-free solders Sn3.0AgO.5Cu and SnO.7CuO.1Ni and lead solders 10Sn90Pb and 50Sn50Pb were investigated at temperatures between 298 K and 398 K. The creep-rupture time decreases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The analysis of the solder creep curves uses the Omega method. The creep rate E is expressed by following formula: 1n ? = 1n ?0 + O?, where ?0 and O are experimentally determined. The parameter Eo increases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The activation energy for ?0 is 108 kJ/mol for Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu and 85 kJ/mol for SnO.7CuO.INi. These energies suggest that the lattice diffusion of tin is dominant. The energy of 1OSn90Pb is 37 kJ/mol and that of 50Sn50Pb is 67 kJ/mol. The creep-rupture time is calculated using the parameters, ?0 and O. The calculated creep-rupture time is in good agreement with the measured creep-rupture time.IntroductionLead-free solders are replacing traditional tin-lead solders as part of a major trend toward protecting the earth's environment. However, tin-lead solders are currently needed for a high temperature range. Since creep is the main deformation mechanism in solder joints, understanding a constitutive model for creep and examining creep data for solders are important for reliability analysis of solder joints. A steady-state creep equation is generally used for solders [1,2], and it supposes that the secondary-, or minimum-, creep rate occupies the entire creep life. However, secondary creep accounts for only about 15 % to 40 % of the entire creep life for solders. Thus, the equation may not represent the entire creep life."

Petroleum development in Oklahoma during the year 1932 was rather colorless. The crude price structure, while it was relatively stable, was too low to encourage wildcat drilling and proration restrictions were such that producing wildcats were usually faced with the drab prospect of being limited to 50 bbl. per day. Proration in flush and semiflush areas was for the most part successfully accomplished. Military enforcement of proration rulings was deemed necessary at Oklahoma City. The trend toward cost cutting and abandonment of unprofitable wells continued through the year. It is estimated that 1500 wells were abandoned and it is not unlikely that as many more were shut down which will never produce again. Oklahoma crude oil stocks were reduced by approximately 11 million barrels in 1932. It is generally conceded that inventories of material have been appreciably reduced. Leasing activity was limited principally to rental reductions and to close scrutiny of all lease holdings. There were numerous "leasing plays" based on geophysical information but with few exceptions they were small. It is estimated that over 15 per cent of the acreage under lease at the beginning of 1932 was surrendered during the year. There was a tendency through the year to prospect shallow pay sands formerly passed by in the search for deeper production. This is especially true of the Seminole area, where the Calvin sand received considerable attention, and where some good wells were completed. Prices There were two price changes during the year that affected the majority of crude sales. Using 36 gravity A.P.I. as a basis of comparison, the price was increased on April 11 from $0.77 to $0.92. On Dec. 16, the price dropped to $0.69. During the fall months there were several postings higher than this schedule but all postings were at the same level at the end of the year.

One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson' has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. Craig (University of Toronto, Toronto, O,nt., Canada)—The advent of pyramidal slip at room temperatures in a magnesium crystal (M2,) and the very low value reported for the critical shear stress are puzzling. Table I1 shows the calculated values (approximate) for sin x cos I in this specimen if all the (10l) planes are considered. If So is the shear stress resolved in the direction of glide, on the glide plane, and U, is the stress operative in yield point tests, then: S,, — 325 (0.169) 55gpersqmm (approximately) for 1101: S,, = 325 (0.465) = 151 gpersqmm (approximately) for (0001): S,, — 325 (0.101) - 32.8 gpersqmm (approximately) Thus, we see the pyramidal plane in which the minimum shearing component operated. Barrett"' stated: "Experiments have repeatedly shown that, when there are several crystallographically equivalent slip systems in a crystal, the one having the greatest resolved shear stress will become active. ..." It does not appear to me that the measurements given are conclusive proof that pyramidal slip operated. E. C. Burke and W. R. Hibbard, Jr. (authors' reply) —Although the low value for the critical resolved shear stress for pyramidal slip may be puzzling, there does not appear to be any basis for questioning the validity of the measurements. Under the influence of constraints, slip systems having decidedly lower shearing components may become operative, e.g., "cross-slip" or the "forced glide" in magnesium reported by Bakarian. Since we believe that pyramidal slip occurred in the specimen because basal slip was inhibited, it is not too surprising to find an operative plane with a lower shear stress. -7 C. S. In all, 210 wellst were completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1939, which is 59 more than were drilled during the preceding year. Of this number, 137 were gas wells, which is a considerable increase from the 81 completed during 1938. Only 25 oil wells were completed, as against 28 in the previous year, and 28 dry holes, 6 more than last year. Shallow Development—Gas The increase in the number of gas wells is largely the result of a search for additional gas in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Although a considerable number of wells were drilled in the latter county, the majority of them produced less than 100 M cu. ft. initial open flow. In Armstrong County, a new pool was opened in Cowanshannock township, producing from the third Bradford sand. Several large wells were obtained there, one of which produced an initial of nearly 12 million cu. ft., with a reservoir pressure of 1100 Ib. However, the productive area has been fairly well outlined by further drilling and shows that the pool covers only about 800 acres. The sand is 20 to 30 ft. thick, and probably has 5 to 6 ft. of pay. Thus this reserve is not an important one. Several wells were found in Menallen township, Fayette County, where the Big Injun sand has been having a play for the past three years, but the activity there is much less than a year ago. Oil On the west side of the Bradford sand gas pool, Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, a well was drilled which flowed 100 bbl. the first day from the Tiona sand. The probability is that this well is a freak, as the Tiona has been drilled within a fairly close distance on every

Russia's first "Petaletka'' has ended. Technically it did not succeed but practically it has been a great achievement in the petroleum industry. Out of the chaos of revolution and civil war Russia has developed her oil industry to second place in the world's production. For 1932 production of crude oil is estimated at 150,000,000 bbl. and refined products at 145,000,000 barrels. Russia has been able to give the petroleum industry every advantage that a government can extend to a fast growing industry. She has obtained all of her property by confiscation. Under government ownership, operation and control, her petroleum industry is not handicapped in any way by state rulings or by unnecessary competition in production, refining and marketing. There are no damage suits resulting from offsetting, flooding, repressuring, laying of pipe lines, building of docks or other necessary work. Russian oil fields2 have been easy to develop and operate. They lie advantageously to transportation for foreign markets. The chief disadvantages have been a lack of credit and technical cooperation, but the former is being overcome by the sacrifice of the people. They go without the comforts of life that all salable articles may be exported for the imports of modern machinery. Modern machinery is fast replacing the obsolete and worn-out equipment. Technical cooperation has been difficult because it has been necessary to train thousands of adults to do technical and mechanical work. Great quantities of pipe, tools and electrical equipment were necessary for the rapidly developing fields and refineries. The supplies have been inadequate and the quality poor. This lack of equipment, along with the untrained technical supervision, has been the cause of the proposed quota falling short. Fig. 1 shows the production for 1931 and 1932. During 1932 a large percentage of the oil was produced in the proven fields of the Caucasus.

The application of computers for control purposes in hydrometallurgical processes is not as well-established as in mineral processing plants. This is not only due to the comparatively new development of large-scale application of hydrometallurgy and the relatively small number of operating plants, but also due to some of the basic dynamic characteristics of hydro- metallurgical processes., Basically there is little difference in the development and application of digital control techniques in hydrometallurgical plants from those techniques widely in use throughout the chemical process industry and in nonslurry applications; particularly for those cases involving liquid streams only, the primary sensing elements are essentially the same. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis is a well-established method for determination of metal content in the process streams, and standard equipment is used for the measurement and control of pH, flow, density, temperature, pressure, and other variables. Nevertheless, the high proportion of corrosive slurry streams at elevated temperature and pressure poses a challenge to the instrument engineer concerned with developing long-life, reliable instrumentation. One major difference and potential problem area in developing control systems for hydro- metallurgical processes is related to the very long time constants which are common in the larger plant. In these circumstances, it is important to define the overall control objectives very carefully and be prepared to allow for considerable drift in intermediate variables. In larger projects with many control loops the general advantage of lower costs compared to conventional analog instrumentation can be confidently expected. Also in most cases, the process analysis necessary to design and specify a comprehensive computer control system and the increased operator involvement in implementing digital control systems yield additional benefits due to the increased understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the process.

Considerable stimulation was given to the interest in the lower producing zones of the North Central Texas area when several wildcat wells developed production in these formations. The Iron Mountain and Humble-Olander well in sec. 196, B.B.B. and C. survey, Jones County, Texas, had a potential of 7500 bbl. (after a 3000-gal. acid treatment) from the Palo Pinto limestone encountered from 3238 to 3250 ft. This well heightened the prospects for oil in commercial quantities in the Canyon, Strawn, Bend and Ellenburger formations in the adjoining counties of Shackelford, Haskell, Throckmorton and others. The Hickok-Van Parmer well in sec. 477 S.P.R.R. Co. survey, Eastland County, Texas, was good for 1040 bbl., natural, from the Ellen-burger limestone, encountered from 4024 to 4033 feet. The Hal Hughes-Cook and Jordan (Poindexter) well in sec. 350, block 6, S.P.R.R. Co. survey, Callahan County, flowed 890 bbl. in 9 hr., after acid treatment, from the Ellenburger limestone, encountered from 4369 to 4388 feet. Both of the Ellenburger wells apparently are maintaining the pressure and volume of their original potential tests, and will no doubt open up considerable area in the adjoining counties for prospecting to the Ellen-burger limestone. Production increased in the district from 12,081,871 bbl. in 1936 to 15,384,500 bbl. The increase was due to developments in Jones and Jack Counties. Jack County production increased from 896,680 bbl. in 1936 to 3,117,063 in 1937, while Jones County increased from 1,596,743 bbl. in 1936 to 2,289,322 in 1937. The remaining counties of the district showed a slight decrease in the amount of oil produced.

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust emission rates from overburden drilling at a surface coal mine and the transport of this dust to downwind locations. The emission rates were estimated by using multiple gravimetric dust samplers mounted on a cross-shaped tripod located immediately downwind of the drill. The transport of this dust was measured at more distant downwind locations by a combination of respirable gravimetric sampling and integrated bag sampling of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which was used as a tracer gas. Two modes of sampling were used: (1) At five sampling locations arranged in a semicircle around the drill. The radius of this arc ranged from 15.85 m (52 ft) to 71.32 m (234 ft). (2) In-line sampling at downwind locations with samplers located at intervals of either 10.67 m (35 ft) or 15.24 m (50 ft) for a total distance of 76.20 m (250 ft). Samples were taken 1 .22 m to 1.52 m (4 to 5 ft) above ground level. Test results for the semicircular test arrangements showed that at any downwind location, the maximum contribution of respirable dust due specifically to the drilling operation was 42%; the average for eight tests was 13.6%. In general, there was no correlation between the downwind distance of this maximum contribution and the maximum contribution itself because of changing wind direction. Test results for the in-line arrangements indicated that the transport of the dust from the drilling operation usually decreases rapidly with distance and that, even though the drill dust may produce significant health hazards for the drill operator and drill helper (or other personnel in the immediate vicinity), the exposure of downwind personnel to drill-generated dust may not be a significant problem.

Exposed, open pit mine highwalls contribute significantly to the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) thus causing environmental concerns upon closure of an operating mine. Four innovative technologies were evaluated under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s, Mine Waste Technology (MWTP), Prevention of AMD Generation from Open-Pit Highwalls Demonstration Project. This project is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement. The objective of the field demonstration was to evaluate the technologies ability to decrease or eliminate acid generation from treated areas of the highwall in comparison an untreated highwall area. The field demonstration was performed at the Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) a subsidiary of Placer Dome U.S., located near Whitehall, Montana. GSM is an operating gold mine. The highwall at GSM was divided into five plots measuring 15.24 by 15.24 metres (m) and each technology was assigned a plot with the fifth plot being used for comparison as a background control plot. The four technologies were spray-applied. The applied insitu treatment technologies included: 1) A modified, furfuryl alcohol resin sealant, utilizing wood and agricultural by-products to coat the rock surface. 2) EcobondTMARD, a phosphate based process that forms a stable, insoluble compound, coating the rock surface. 3) Two ARD passivation technologies, magnesium oxide and the Dupont technology developed to create an inert layer/coating on the pyrite, preventing oxidation. The technologies were evaluated using the following methods: 1) ASTM D 5744-96, Accelerated Weathering of Solid Materials using a Modified Humidity Cells, 2) mine wall residual wall rinse sampling, 3) microscopy, and 4) core drilling followed by water injection testing.

Due to the haphazard application of static tests in South Africa, several methods and interpretations have been followed. This has resulted in confusion amongst practitioners and regulators in the use and validity of these methods. Research was done over a two-year period to define standardised methods and interpretation of results. This included laboratory testing and continuous consultation with all interested parties throughout the country. The research yielded a modified ABA, based on several existing methods. The methodology includes AP determination using hydrogen peroxide, and an analysis of the supernatant by ICP. This has the advantage of not only registering reactive sulfur, but also provides the NAG pH, that enhances the interpretation and QC of the tests. Analysis of the supernatant provides an indication of heavy metal solubilisation, should acid conditions arise. One hundred and seventeen samples were compared to Leco S analyses and provided a good correlation. The Leco values were slightly elevated due to the reporting of total S as opposed to æreactive SÆ. The NP method deviates from the usual methodology, in that H2SO4 is used (to provide a field analogy) and the fact that a 24-hour stabilisation period is allowed before back-titration. The latter modification appears to prevent psuedo-buffering by transient phases. These methods have also been tested for repeatability and prove to be robust. A very simple macro-driven spreadsheet, æABACUSÆ, was also developed. This spreadsheet allows the entry of basic data and provides a detailed interpretation and graphical display of typical ABA data. In cases where drill holes are used, the Pennsylvanian approach of volume calculation can also be done with ABACUS. The results of the research have been distributed to interested parties in South Africa and it is hoped that these methods and their application will find widespread acceptance.

(written discussion ? ).-The only practical method of testing mine air for gas, until recent years, was by the effect of the gas on the flame of the ordinary Davey Lamp, and it is quite surprising how nearly the correct percentage of gas can be deter-mined by many men by observing the behavior of the safety-lamp flame in the different mixtures. Mine foremen frequently guess the percentage of gas to within 0.1 per cent., making certain allowances to cover the dust-laden atmosphere, in which the test was made. It is not meant by this that anthracite dust is explosive, but that its properties increase the length of a fuel cap on an ordinary oil-burning lamp, which, as Prof. -Young contends, increases in height with the proportion of gas and in-creased temperature. Naphtha or benzine-burning lamps have a hotter flame, and, there-fore, are more sensitive so that a smaller percentage of gas can be detected. Some of the fire bosses in this region some years ago preferred the Koehler lamp, while others did not care to use it in their morning examinations. In 1911, when the experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines at Bruce-ton, Pa., was being prepared to be exploded, a large number of mining men went through it to examine the entries, which were lighted by electricity. While so doing, they saw in the face-return-airway a Koehler or Wolfe lamp, that seemed to he burning with difficulty. An investigation showed that the lamp had been filled to overflowing with naphtha and was generating this surplus gas. This shows how easily we can be

"Abstract-In recent years, several unsavory events in international mineral exploration, as well as several widely publicized project difficulties and failures have occurred. The report Setting New Standards has "raised the bar" and proclaimed a "commitment to continuous improvement... and change." We need to evolve from our "generally accepted" practices to more effective quality assurance policies, guidelines and standards. Several steps will be required to support the work of the "qualified persons" now wholly entrusted with technical and professional matters:• adopt a mineral development model and objectives appropriate to orient the selection of workmethods and verification procedures suitable to increase the profitability of these activities;• review the definitions and implications of the terms practice, guideline and standard;• review three quality assurance systems with emphasis on commitment of company management and complementary emphasis on systematic quality policies, plans and manuals (ISO 9000), continuous improvement through "profound knowledge" (Deming, 1986), and self-appraisal of continuous improvement and client satisfaction using the Qualimeter Guide (Québec Society for Quality);• determine, from the objectives of the mineral development model proposed and the problems often encountered, the requirements of resource/reserve estimation and the production feasibility study. To regain investors’ confidence and improve the returns from mineral development activities, an explicit commitment to quality by the board of directors and the management of every company is required.A number of mining companies have gained ISO 9002 certification for their operations but exploration companies should start by developing and implementing quality assurance guidelines and standards based on the ISO 9001 pattern, without achieving actual ISO certification in the short term. Both professional associations and industry organizations must be involved in the process of developing the required quality and continuous improvement guidelines and standards."
