The Tynagh mine of Irish Base Metals Ltd., a subsidiary of Northgate Exploration Ltd., of Toronto, Canada, is situated one mile from the village of Tynagh in County Galway, one of the western counties of the Republic of Ireland. Mining has been carried on in Ireland since the Bronze Ages, but, apart from a reference in the 1859 Geological Survey records to much earlier mining attempts, mining has not been a feature of the Tynagh area in recent times. The present ore body was discovered by geochemical techniques in 1961. Following a diamond drilling programme to delimit the orebody, a pilot plant was operated at the property in late 1963 and early 1964. Construction of the 2000 tons per day treatment plant began later in 1964 and production commenced in December, 1965. The orebody contains both sulphide and 'oxide' ores and these are treated to produce, by flotation, a variety of lead concentrates, a zinc concentrate, and a bulk lead-zinc concentrate, which are shipped to several European smelters. The term "oxide ores" is used here to mean all ores which contain economically important amounts of the oxidised minerals of lead, zinc or copper. As used in connection with open-hearth or other high-temperature operations, "insulation" refers to a multitude of substances, natural or manufactured, that have the one principal property of preventing the flow of heat by conduction to a greater degree than refractories can prevent it, the principal properties of the latter being resistance to temperature and/or chemical action. The term "control" as commonly applied to the mechanization of management functions is inappropriate without qualification, for without some degree of control of every operation we could produce no steel worthy of the name. Although grouped together in this paper, insulation and control in open-hearth furnaces have little, if any, interrelationship, therefore the paper is made up of two distinct parts. INSULATION OF OPEN-HEARTH FURNACES More than ten years ago the writer proposed the insulation of an acid open-hearth furnace system below the charging floor, and it was accomplished, with gratifying results. Possibly that was the first time the insulation of regenerators and slag pockets of any open-hearth furnace was undertaken, but shortly thereafter such insulation became general, and when the six groups of 150-ton furnaces1 were built in 1929-1930, they were completely insulated below the charging floor. "A number of studies have identified the presence of heavy minerals in the Athabasca oil sands. A 1996 Mineral Development Agreement study into the recovery of Co-Products identified low operating costs, a simple flowsheet and access to market as key drivers in advancing interest in a viable project.Commercial bitumen extraction processes recover 50% of the titanium heavy minerals and 85% of the zircon into froth containing 1 % of the feed solids. Froth treatment tailings grade is 11.5% Ti02 and 3.6% Zr02.Processing this high grade feed in a combination of flotation, roasting, screening, gravity concentration and magnetic separation, results in concentrates of rutile, leucoxene, ilmenite, zircon and rare earths of marketable quality.A combination of high grade feed and a simple process lead to operating costs among the lowest in the industry. Low cost heavy minerals and low energy costs indicate an intriguing potential for low cost pigment production in Alberta. Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

In his paper on the calculation of harden-ability from chemical composition, Gross-mannl discussed the effect of most of the alloying elements used commercially. The purpose of the work reported in this paper was to determine the effect of several other elements on hardenability—arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cobalt, columbium, germanium, tellurium, tin, aluminum, and titanium—and to extend the range of composition of some of the elements studied by Grossmann—chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and silicon. Experimental Methods To determine the effect on hardenability, suitable amounts of the alloying elements were added to experimental heats and the hardenability determined by means of end-quenched hardenability specimens. The steels were melted in a high-frequency induction furnace with a basic crucible, using ingot iron as a base for some of the heats and S.A.E. 1015 for others. The alloying additions were made as ferroalloys or as metal, depending on the alloying element. Hundred-pound heats were split and poured into square, tapered, cast-iron ingot molds with hot tops. Aluminum was not used as a deoxidizer in most of the heats. The ingots were homogenized for 12 hr. at 1260°C. (23oo°F.) and forged into rounds of I½ -in. diameter. Legislation and Government Programs.-On February 4, 1977, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its final environmental impact statement on the occupational use of inorganic arsenic.2 The statement examined the ramifications of the original proposed standard published in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).3 The DEIS proposed to limit the exposure of employees to no more than 4 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air as determined on an 8-hour-time-weighted average basis; or a ceiling limit of 10 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air based on a 15 minute sampling period. The purpose of the proposed regulation is to reduce the risk of smelter workers developing lung and skin cancer as a result of exposure. A comprehensive study compiled by the Committee on Medical and Biologic Effects of Environmental Pollutants concluded that "there is strong epidemiologic evidence that inorganic arsenic is a skin and lung carcinogen in man."' In April 1977, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) served notice to ASARCO Incorporated that its Tacoma copper smelter and associated arsenic-producing facilities were in violation of State laws which limit sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions. This notice followed the Washington State Pollution Control Hearing Board overturning a prior ruling by the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency (PSAPCA) which had permitted a 5-year variance from the State of Washington air quality standards. In December 1977, ASARCO appealed in court the decision of the Hearing Board.

Design of thickeners is based on laboratory test work, characterizing the material and determining the optimal reagents, dosages and settling regimes. Several methods for dimensioning plant scale equipment exist. Kynch and Talmage-Fitch design procedures has been applied widely for a long time. Nowadays, besides them, a dynamic laboratory test work is applied for design of high rate thickeners. In that the laboratory unit is operated with known solids load per area, feed and flocculation conditions and with raking of the underflow. All these test methods afford useful data for setting up and calibrating a dynamic simulation model of a plant scale thickener. This paper presents a flocculation kinetics based dynamic thickener simulation model and a procedure to calibrate the model parameters. With the model, the underflow stream composition can be simulated over time as a function of the thickener operating parameters, which are: the feed rate and composition, underflow pumping rate, flocculant dosage and dilution of the feed. In addition, the model incorporates calculation of the slurry bed level, the cone pressure, the yield stress and the rake torque. Such a dynamic modeling scheme enables setting up simulation aided operator trainings and developing and testing of advanced control strategies, for example. The unit model can be integrated as a part of concentrator-wide flow sheet simulation model as well. Here, calibration of the kinetic flocculation model based on a laboratory test case data and further the operation of a simulated plant scale thickener are presented.

THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. HISTORY Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining oper-ations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton con-centrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper.

Large quantities of zinc-base die-cast scrap containing 3 to 4 percent aluminum are presently refined by mixing with other secondary zinc products such as galvanizer dross and distilling in a retort. The Bureau of Mines investigated alternate aluminum removal processes utilizing low-cost fluxes. Basing the investigation on the metallurgical principle that a reactive impurity can be removed from a less reactive matrix metal by melting under a flux consisting of a salt or oxide of a metal less reactive than the impurity, three separate flux mixtures were studied. In the first flux system, [FeCl3] + NaCI (the active component is underlined), part of the aluminum is' eliminated by the formation of volatile aluminum chloride and the rest by the creation of a high melting point iron-aluminum intermetallic compound that can be separated from the remaining molten zinc by filtration. Aluminum removal in the second system, [Fe203] + CaClz + NaCI, is effected by the formation of the iron-aluminum compound and possibly aluminum oxide. The third system, spent sal skimmings--essentially a mixture of [ZnCl2], NH4Cl, and ZnO, depends solely on aluminum chloride formation. Of the three flux systems investigated, the best results obtained were with system 3. Aluminum was reduced in the molten die-cast alloy from 4.10 percent to 0.01 percent when depleted sal skimmings were used.

Covers on waste rock and tailings remain the primary choice for closure planning where the purpose is to create an environment where water ingress into reactive material can be controlled and/or prevented. In semi-arid and arid environments, dry cover systems are the preferred option with the design intention to absorb rainfall and to prevent deep drainage. Although the average amount of rain typical for semi-arid environments is relatively low and evaporative demand is high, the seasonal and annual distribution may vary greatly. Rocky substrates are often the only choice for the construction of covers due to economic constraints or availability of suitable materials. While the water holding capacity may be suitable for the application of a dry cover design in arid and semi-arid climates, some of these covers bear the risk of preferential water flow when rain events are intensive or occurring at high frequency. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the occurrence of preferential flow through rock containing dry cover systems. A regional classification for the applicability of dry covers is attempted to delineate those regions of Australia where the characteristic of the rainfall pattern increases the risk of failure for dry cover designs. Deep underground mines use refrigeration systems to provide a reasonably comfortable ambient environment to increase productivity and to maintain safety as a priority. Deep level gold mines maintain the environment at an acceptable temperature, i.e. 27°C. However, the increasing cost of doing so through refrigeration is becoming a significant factor in the economic viability of mines. This paper discusses of the important facet of energy losses in cooling reticulation systems, laying with the specific emphasis on the subject of chilled water transport pipe insulation and its thermo-dynamic relationships. Aspects relating to the deterioration of open cell-type insulation materials such as polyurethane/styrene foams and the use of Phenolic resins that have good fire retardation properties have been investigated. The thermal conductivities of these insulation media are good (meaning below 0.05 W/°C)However, they are known to be negatively influenced by water vapour ingress and vapour pressure differences that result in the ingress of water into the material by means of absorption, condensation, hygrospicity, permeability and capillary action, to name a few of many. The overall effect on mine cooling efficiency takes in the two forms: first by the loss of refrigeration or increased chill in the water temperature arriving in a given section and second, by a loss in transfer efficiency when the gap between the arriving water temperature and the actual air temperature decreases. The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.

The Objana Cement Plant is located in central Nigeria, approximately 200km south of capital city Abuja (figure 1). It is the second largest cement plant in Africa, and the fifth largest in the world [1]. The selected mining location is unique as it has all the major raw materials (except gypsum) in close proximity. This includes limestone, clay, marl, laterite soil, and laterite iron. [ ] The plant has a capacity of 5 million metric tones per year (~15,000 tones per day). A 135 megawatt gas-fired power plant, with 90 km of natural gas pipeline, was constructed to power the plant. The total project cost is approximately 1.2 billion US dollars. The lifeline of the plant is two overland conveys totalling 7.7km in length. The first 800m conveyor is relatively mundane. The second conveyor however, is unlike any other troughed belt conveyor in the world. It 6.9km length transports 2,400 T/H and operates at 5.0 m/s. Its ?snake? profile consists of 11 vertical cuvees, and four horizontal curves. The last of which is 2,000m in radius, has a length of 2.2km, and is located at the high tension head end of the conveyor. Although these specifications are noteworthy, the unique feature of this system is that it is entirely elevated from head to tail using a triangulated truss gantry structure (figure 2).

Reduction of oxygen-containing copper has always heretofore been brought about with wood poles. This paper reveals the first successful, economical, and Practical substitute for poles: a gaseous reductant, of which the production and plant use are detailed herein. THE art of fire refining of copper, consisting of melting, oxidation, slag removal, and finally reduction with wood poles, has been practiced for many centuries. An authentic record, discussed in detail in De Re Metallica,* mentions that as early as 1200 A.D. workers in this field of metallurgy were already acquainted with and practiced the basic principles of copper purification. Undoubtedly, the art was well developed marly centuries before the first written records began to appear. Notwithstanding the many advantages gained by application of mechanical con. trivances and by the tremendous increase in size of operations over the centuries, the reduction phase of the process has persisted essentially the same to the present time except for a very recent breakthrough. Numerous articles have been published and many patents have been issued on the subject of substitutes for wood poling in the past half century. They have dealt with a variety of gaseous, solid, and liquid reducing agents. But to the knowledge of the writer, no procedure has ever been prosecuted to a complete success on a large operating plant scale with the single exception of gaseous reduction of oxygen-containing copper revealed in detail herein. "The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. As part of the development of processes for producing synthetic fuels from coal, the Bureau of Mines prepared a special jet fuel in a pilot plant for evaluation by the Air Force. This jet fuel had all the required physical properties, including the important specifications of high heating value and high density. However, the finished fuel did not pass the stability test specified by the Air Force and conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in a high-temperature research coker. The cause for this instability is being investigated because pure compounds of the type identified in this fuel are known to be stable. The tar acid oil used was a 230° to 300° C. fraction of low-temperature tar obtained by carbonization of a West Virginia bituminous coal in the pilot plant of the Consolidation Coal Co. Both the desulfurization at 400° C. and saturation at 300" C. were done in the vapor phase at 2,500 p.s.i.g. After catalytic treatment and distillation the final jet fuel had a boiling range of 194° to 247° C., a net heating value of 18,420 B.t.u./lb. and a specific gravity of 0.8463 60° F./60° F. It also had u pour point below -62° C., and at 0° C. its viscosity was 4.5 cs. The oil was virtually all bicyclic, 41 pct. noncondensed and 56 pct. condensed.
