The introduction of the National Instrument (?NI?) 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects has led to some very specific requirements to reporting a Mineral Resource estimate for mineral projects to the public. There are elements of the Mineral Resource estimate that are based on the qualified person (?QP?) completing the work to accepted industry practices and applying their relevant experience. There is no document that defines what is considered the accepted industry practices. There are guidelines provided by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (?CIM?) but, in general, the industry practices are dynamic and often different QPs will estimate the same mineral project in different ways. This sometime happens on exploration projects as they proceed from one study to the next. The focus of this paper is to provide a review of some of the current practices that are published in Technical Reports (Preliminary Assessment to Feasibility studies) with respect to classifying a Mineral Resource as Inferred, Indicated and Measured and the grade interpolation and modeling methods, data support (i.e. geological drill hole spacing) and validation methods employed.

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

A commercial, battery-powered mine vehicle has been equipped for remote operation in coal mines. This vehicle is controlled by an operator from the remote station. Command signals originating at the remote station as well as video and data signals originating on board the vehicle are relayed between the remote station and vehicle using a single coaxial line. This coaxial line is normally 2,000 feet in length and is reeled in and out from a drum mounted aboard the vehicle The vehicle has a maximum speed of 6 ft/sec and a minimum speed of 4 ft/sec using 36-volt excitation of the traction motor. If this traction motor is excited by two of the three batteries, 24-volt excitation, the vehicle will travel at approximately 2 ft/sec. The speed can be reduced by the operator to 1 ft/sec. This vehicular system has been tested in coal mines. Presently, the major limitation of this system is associated with fatigue failure of the splices in the coaxial line and lack of mobility caused by its 3-wheel design.

The original work statement of this contract was entitles: 'A Accident Analysis Model for Use in Underground Coal Mines.' The contract was scheduled for a duration of 26 months and was to be in three phases: Phase I - Model Development, Phase II - Application of the Model, and Phase III - Installation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Model. Alter three months in Phase I, it became apparent that much of the needed data for the model was nut available and could not be made available within the original study schedule. Proceeding as plumed would have resulted in a model of limited utility. Personnel from Theodore Barry and Associates and the Bureau discussed the problem in detail and mutually decided to utilize the majority of remaining funds to assist the Bureau in solving these data problems and develop a stronger ongoing capability for safety analysis within the Bureau. Both tie contractor and the bureau officials involved believed that this decision greatly enhanced the Bureau's ability to develop future accident prediction models, whose rigor would greatly exceed what was currently possible.

"Since the publication of empirical cyclone models by Lynch and Rao in 1975 and by Plitt in 1976, the technical literature on this subject has consisted primarily of reports of applications, with only a few articles discussing basic modifications or enhancements in model form. In fact, most of the modelling eff ort in this period has been concerned with theoretical models based on the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow. (Preliminary resutls have been encouraging, however, it will be some time before this approach reaches the practical application stage.) This paper presents a review of empirical cyclone modelling technology, with an emphasis on developments since the mid 1970s. The topics addressed include homogeneous and heterogeneous ores, parameter estimation techniques, parameter confidence intervals, and the introduction of a new conceptual model of cyclone operation.IntroductionSince their first reported application in the mineral industry by Driessen (1939), cyclones have become a common unit operation in all of the process industries. The widespread use of the cyclone stems from its relative low cost and its versatility. It can be employed to carry out liquid-liquid, solid-liquid and solid-solid separations. It is the area of solid-solid separation which is of greatest interest to a mineral processing engineer. Historically, this area was divided into two application categories: (I) Separation according to density, the cyclone washer, and, (2) Classification according to particle size, the cyclone ciassifier. (When water is the carrier fluid, the cyclone is more often called the hydrocyclone. For the purposes of this paper the two names are used interchangeably). Classification is the principal application in mineral processing circuit s. Within this category, the cyclone is most commonly employed to provide some positive control over the size distribution of product from a grinding circuit. Other uses include sand-slime separation prior to froth flotation and mill tailings treatment, either for dam construction or in backfill preparation."

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the USA. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before firing to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150,000 metric tons of barite in both 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender, or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics, and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks, and add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around x-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants, and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses account for an estimated 78,000 tons per year in the United States. Another barite use was patented in 1926 by the oil industry. In this patent, barite is primarily used as a non-abrasive weighting agent for drilling for oil and gas exploration and production. As a weighting agent, it provides the downward force in a water based or oil based drilling fluid for cutting through rock with a tri-cone diamond drill bit. In order to minimize the wear on the drill bit and drill stem, minimum abrasion of the weighting agent is preferred. In recent years in the USA, 95% of the barite produced and about 80% on a world basis are used as a fluid weighting material during the search for oil and gas. During the latter part of the 20th century, barite was used in the drilling mud of oil and gas wells, particularly for wells deeper than 2000 meters, and petroleum well drilling demand for barite became the mineral?s major end use during economic expansions after World War II and subsequent increased use of oil and gas in the USA. The profitability of oil and gas production had a strong effect on the number of drill rigs and consumption of barite. The United States was the leading petroleum well drilling country starting in 1970, reaching 4,530 drill rigs in December 1981, and was the largest consumer of barite. In the USA, record highs of about 2.6 million tons of barite produced and 4.3 million tons consumed were reported in 1981. From 1997 to 2006, barite production declined from 662,000 to 589,000 metric tons. However, USA imports increased from 1,470,000 to 2,530,000 metric tons for lump barite. World production of barite increased from 6,780,000 to 7,960,000 metric tons during the same period. Table 1 (see Appendix) lists USA production, imports and exports and world production from 1997 to 2006. Major sources of imported barite include China, India and Morocco. Table 2 (see Appendix) lists the USA imports and price of barite by country. China, India and Morocco are the three largest exporters of barite to the USA and the world. Vietnam is a new producer, beginning in 2006. IMPACT OF CHINA ON DRILLING GRADE BARITE In the 1970s or before, China began supplying barite to the world drilling market in order to help develop their economy. When China first entered the barite export market, their high production volume, low pricing and low ocean transport expenses to the Gulf Coast forced barite producers in the USA to supply only regional markets, such as Battle Mountain Nevada barite for the western and Rocky Mountain states and Canada. Until recently, it was China?s government policy for domestic consumers to use barite below the API 4.20 specific gravity specification, leaving higher grades for export, but this is no longer the case. In recent years the internal demand for barite in China increased tremendously as their economy rapidly developed. China reduced their former 15% VAT tax rebates to 5% for Chinese barite producers, and then eliminated all VAT tax rebates on December 15, 2006. On the supply side, some high-grade barite deposits in China have been depleted. In particular, the low heavy metals sources are less plentiful. Additional mine capacity is being developed, but the new mines are underground and therefore costs will be higher. China?s appetite for other raw materials has tied up a large portion of the world?s bulk vessel fleet, including Panamax vessels (preferred for barite ore transport). Ocean transport freight rates have increased in recent years, and receiving ports in the USA are congested with imports of higher-added-value products. The Panamax Index, which tracks maritime shipping rates, more than doubled in 2006. China has also devalued its currency from RMB8.30 to RMB7.80 per dollar. These factors are driving up the import price of crude and ground barite for drilling. In addition, in the USA, rail congestion and high fuel prices led to higher trucking rates, increasing the delivered cost of ground barite to oil customers. India is the second largest supplier of crude barite to the USA and world drilling market. It produces all of its barite from a single deposit in the Cuddapah region of Andhra Pradesh State. More than 90% of production comes from the State-owned Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corp., and the government continues to closely control production, export volumes, and prices. India saw a dramatic increase in barite prices as a result of its last 3-year tender in 2004. However, in 2004 and 2005 their shipments of crude barite to the USA were not significant. In 2005, India began supplying barite pulverized to meet API specifications to the Gulf Coast. In 2006, Indian production was reduced owing to severe flooding in November 2005 that curtailed mining until mid-April 2006. Morocco has been the third largest supplier of crude barite to the USA and world drilling market. In 2003 and 2004 their shipments of crude barite to the USA were not significant. In 2005, Morocco resumed shipment of crude barite to the Gulf Coast and began supplying barite ground to meet API specifications to the Gulf Coast.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of analytical techniques potentially capable of determination of Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca and Fe in 1 to 2 mg samples of respirable coal mine dust, in a total analysis time of not more than 10 minutes per sample, using equipment capable of being truck mounted for field-laboratory operation. It was not essential that the technique be non-destructive, but the chosen technique is, and this enables the analysis to be performed directly on the 37 mm diameter membrane filter on which the respirable dust sample is normally collected. The sensitivity requirements are therefore quoted in terms of the units of measurement, µg/cm2. The detection limit (3o of the background criterion) should be 0.5 µg/cm2 or less. The precision should be 5% or better, at concentrations above which the detection limit is not the determining factor.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tons of which 22 million tons was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (north and south) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/h, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (define?measure?analyse ?improve?control), which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for ongoing fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of unblasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance with plan for actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but this is now being replaced with a fully automated drill data management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods for the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire drill and blast process.

The mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate among major U.S. industries. To address this, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), is conducting major research programs to reduce the hazard exposure of miners. One of the recently concluded programs at PRL developed the enabling technology for remote-controlled mining. An application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the continuous haulage equipment so that it follows the continuous mining machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors functioning in the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations established operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a guidance sensor. Technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications, but were found unacceptable. However, a near-infrared sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75b conical field of view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single-target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.65 m. Correction algorithms were generated, which reduced the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than an additional0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at dust levels up to 15 mg/m3. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. Analysis of dynamic testing of a continuous miner and haulage showed that accuracy was maintained and total target loss did not occur. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commercially. Such a system can reduce fatalities, injuries, and exposure to dust and noise.

"This paper investigates the conditions leading to the indefinite termination of production in four critical primary panels at an underground coal mining operation, the observed shortcomings in the mining approach, and the proposed strategy to mine through the affected panels. Initial assessment of the abandoned panel conditions indicated time-dependent strata failure,(i.e. bolted roof failure overrunning intersections), which occurred from mere minutes to up to four weeks post-production, with and without prior warning of failure. This prompted the constant re-supporting of back areas, which raised safety and productivity concerns. Investigation of the initial mining conditions revealed that the failures were due to a critical combination of factors, the chief of which was isolated horizontal stress. Other factors that were initially overlooked by the mine (i.e. influence of hydraulic stress, misinterpretation of borehole data), resulted in the conditions being described as abnormal. Remedial actions were determined, and in so doing, a new strategic approach was formulated to thoroughly address all failure concerns. The four panels were explicitly planned to serve as the main intake and return airways for the recently commissioned secondary ventilation shaft, as well as providing access to millions of tons in proven coal reserves. It is thus imperative to mine the panels. A feasibility study showed that the proposed strategy set for implementation would be financially viable. Introduction This Instructor’s Copy contains most of the information needed to use the Wearing Hearing Protection Properly 3-D training reel. It offers practical suggestions on how to use the reel as a training aid, performance objectives for deciding if the training is appropriate for your needs, and discussion notes that provide additional information to the user. The 3-D reel was designed as a self-teaching aid that drillers and others who work at a drill site can use wherever the opportunity for such training presents itself. The latter could be a company preshift requirement or a tailgate session where workers would have an opportunity to view and discuss the reel. It could also be an individual looking at the reel in a pickup truck prior to beginning work at a drill site. The 3-D training reel is versatile in that it can be used for a small group of persons or for a single worker. For any of these situations, information is transferred to the individual by viewing each of the seven colorful, in-depth 3-D scenes and relating the words that appear in each scene to what is depicted in the visual. This paper describes the significant advantages and improvements in operational availability, reduced breakdowns, and overall cost reductions that can be achieved through the application of a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) program, including Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Equipment Health Monitoring (EHM), in a mine environment. It uses a case study to illustrate the essential elements that constitute the basic requirements to establish such programs. This CBM case study analyzed the Load-Haul- Dump (LHD) vehicle sub-systems and their dominant failure modes, as a precursor to the development of condition indicators. The case study describes a disciplined process to enable condition indicator development and qualification in support of a CBM program. The identified condition indicators vary from readily applicable off-the-shelf monitoring systems and techniques, through to "leading edge" technologies that require further research and development. The paper also explores the developments that have been made in the combination of expert system software associated with modern computer based control systems, and the availability of "intelligent? sensor technology that complement the control system capability.

"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. Fundamental data on the rate of diffusion of boron in austenite and solubility of boron in the a and y phases of iron and steel have been obtained from deboronizing experiments and provide partial explanations for some of the phenomena observed in boron steels. The rate of diffusion of boron is about the same as carbon in austenite. The solubility of boron in austenite at normal heat-treating temperatures is less than 0.001 pct. A partial tentative Fe-B phase diagram in the important low boron concentration ranges and an equation representing the diffusion of boron in austenite are presented. A LTHOUGH a search of the literature revealed ALTHOUGHthat boron diffusion had not been studied quantitatively and systematically prior to 1948, a few qualitative observations which were made by following the diffusion of boron into iron packed in ferro-boron1-3 suggest that boron obeys normal diffusion laws and that the rate of diffusion increases with increasing temperature. The claim of Cornelius and Bollenrath1 that boron does not appear to influence the rate of carbon diffusion has recently been substantiated by Wells, Batz, and Mehl.4 Calculations based on data from the paper by Campbell and Fayv indicated that the diffusion coefficient (D) for boron in iron at 900°C is approximately 3x10 sq cm per sec; a value of 2x10-7 sq cm per sec at 1038°C has been reported by Digges et al in connection with decarburizing experiments on a commercial boron steel containing 0.43 pct C. During the period 1948 to 1950 several diffusivity constant (D) values for the diffusion of boron in the y phase of iron and steel and a number of solubility values for boron in both a and y phases were reported. It was concluded tentatively as a result of Metals Research Laboratory studies that D values for boron in y and a phases are about the same as for carbon in the comparable phasesa and that carbon up to 0.4 pct did not affect the rate of diffusion of boron in y iron above 1000°C within the limits of experimental error. Whether saturation of the y or a phases with carbon would significantly affect rates of diffusion of boron through them was then and still remains in doubt. The best estimate of Q (activation energy) was reported to be about 25,000 cal, somewhat lower than that for carbon in y iron. The solubility of boron in y iron at 1000°C was thought to be higher than 0.004 pct B but not as high as a more recent analysis of available data shows it to be. The solubility of boron in a iron at 700°C was reported to be 0.0004 pct B, but it would not have surprised the authors if the true solubility value is actually lower than this. Breaks in diffusion curves which were not understood when first obtained prior to 1950 have now been recognized as indicating solubility limits, and these are included in the present paper. Experimental Procedure Two methods were employed in an effort to determine diffusion coefficients (D) for boron in austenite. Early experiments involved the use of welded couples prepared in accordance with the procedure of Wells and Mehl,' but when the results of these experiments proved to be unsatisfactory for calculating D values, studies were continued by means of deboronizing experiments. In both cases, boron analyses following the diffusion anneal were carried out spectrographically and all D values were computed using the Grube solution of Fick's law. The precision of the spectrographic method used proved to be about equal to that reported by Corliss and Scribner" —average deviation from the mean about 5 pct of the amount present when the boron content is 0.003 pct. Concentration-penetration curves obtained from spectrographic analyses of welded couples generally indicated that practically no boron was transported across the weld interface during the diffusion anneal. Radon in the Environment Radon, as a natural nobel gas, can be detected nearly everywhere in the environment as a decay product of ubiquitous uranium. As it is emanated from soil and rocks measurable concentrations have been found at the surface of soils and in even higher concentrations in enclosed spaces like, for example, mines and buildings. While above soil surface activities caused by radon have been found in an order of magnitude of up to 1 pCi/l (Weigel, F. 1978), concentrations in enclosed spaces and mines are higher because of the lack of atmospheric circulation. Beside air circulation the relevant figure depends on the Ra226-concentration in the surrounding rocks or building material, as well as on emanation coefficient and the diffusion coefficient. While representative Rn222concentrations in well ventilated buildings are reported to be in an order of magnitude of 1 pCi/l maximum values up to one order of magnitude higher have been found in badly ventilated brick buildings (Ettenhuber, E., Lehmann, R., Clajus, P., 1978) (Aitken, J.H., et al., 1977). Just now it was stated that the reduced air circulation due to German legal regulations on energy conservation will increase radon exposure of the public considerably (Jacobi, W., 1979). Radon in Mines Radon exposure of workers is, of course, a matter of concern in uranium ore mines where relatively high concentrations of the uranium to be mined are present. Measures to protect workers' health have been implemented, based on experience on dose-effect relationship. They serve to meet exposure standards by limiting inhalation of radioactive particles, in reducing radon concentrations or in limiting working hours. Both improved measuring devices and capacity as well as the lower discrimination threshold enable to measure radon concentrations in other mines, e.g. in coal mines. It is known that radioactivity in coal is small compared with that in other minerals and even soil, rocks. Nevertheless, radioactive elements were identified in coal and so the question was whether the concentrations of radon in coal mines might be a subject of concern. The problems encountered when measuring radon in coal mines are described below, as the measuring device has to be flame proofed which is an important additional requirement. Measured radon concentrations in British coal mines have already been published (Duggan, M.J., Howell, D.M., Soilleux, P.J., 1968 (Dungey, C.J., Hore, J., Walter, M.D., 1978). The authors found concentrations of up to 14 pCi/l in Cornish mines. In most cases the values were in the order of 2 pCi/l. These results were consistent with measurements reported from U.S.-coal mines (Lucas, H.F., Gabrush, A.F., 1966). Such concentrations of radon were not considered to represent a hazard for British miners (Ogden, T.L., 1974). In Germany, too, first measurements have been carried out in five coal mines in the Saarland in the 60's. Air samples were taken at different places in the coal mines, dried, fed to an ionisation cell and measured by a device including reference cells. Samples taken at ventilated places showed radon concentrations consistent with the lower British results. They all kept within the standards of the first German regulation on protection against radiation. Measuring the radon daughters was renounced because of the relatively low radon concentrations and the requirements for flame proofness in coal mines. Moreover, it can be ascertained that because of the effective ventilation the disequilibrium factor between the decay products and the radon concentration remains far below the value of one (Muth, H., 1978) (Keller, G.). In 1979 the committee on mine safety and health protection in coal and other mines of the EEC proposed to have measured and evaluated radon concentrations in European coal mines to find out whether they complied with international standards. Great Britain and Germany agreed to this proposal and by commissioning such measurements to scientific institutes complied with the request to harmonize the methods used. In the Federal Republic of Germany, e.g. Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) and Staatliches Materialprüfungsamt; Dortmund (MPA) were requested to carry out the measurements in coal mines of the Ruhr coalfield whereas Saarberg Interplan was responsible for the Saar coalfield. The WBK measurements are reported in later paragraphs.

Quench aging of supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium takes place in reasonable times in the temperature range 300&apos; to 500°C. Changes in internal friction, hardness, and electrical resistivity are found to accompany this change. THERE is practically no detailed information in the literature concerning interstitial solid solutions in either columbium or tantalum. The fact that both of these metals are used extensively commercially in both pure and alloyed states makes studies of their properties of value. While the plan is to study both these metals and their alloys extensively, so far only a small number of measurements have been made. This paper presents data obtained in the initial investigations of columbium. The principal interstitial impurities of columbium are likely to be hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The first of these, hydrogen, is outside the scope of internal friction measurements at present and nothing quantitative is known about the initial hydrogen content of the specimens. However, it is believed that it is completely absent after the preliminary heat treatments are carried out. The carbon content of the original samples is low and can be reduced still further during sample preparation. Oxygen is normally present to some extent in columbium and can also be added or removed easily. Nitrogen is also normally present in small amounts and can also be controlled within limits. Since it is not possible yet to remove all the nitrogen from columbium and since it is possible to remove essentially all the oxygen and carbon, initial measurements were made on the alloy system nitrogen in columbium. In this sense then, the alloys are true binary alloys. Little is known about the effects of nitrogen on the physical and metallurgical properties of columbium, so it was necessary to perform some rather elementary measurements on the specimens. These measurements are described briefly in the next section and are discussed in detail in later sections. Scope of the Work That internal friction is associated with diffusion of nitrogen in columbium has been known for some time. It is similar in nature to that for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron. In these latter cases, the information obtained from internal friction has been useful metallurgically.&apos; and it is not too much to expect useful information from similar studies on columbium containing nitrogen. The technique of internal friction measurements is adequately described by Ke2 At a frequency of 1 cps the internal friction peak for nitrogen in columbium occurs at 300°C and that for oxygen at 160°C." So that all the measurements will be meaningful metallurgically, the internal friction has been calibrated by making a measurement of the damping at the two peaks and a measurement of oxygen and nitrogen content by chemical analysis. A comparison of the two gives the following calibration factor: To go from damping capacity expressed in terms of 1/Q to weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution in columbium, multiply the peak values of internal friction by about 4 and 3 respectively." Data from which these factors were calculated are presented in Table I. The increase of electrical resistance of columbium caused by the addition of oxygen and nitrogen as interstitial impurities has been quantitatively determined. At room temperature the percentage increase is small for small additions of impurities (<0.1 wt pct); as the temperature is lowered it becomes an increasingly larger factor of the total resistance. An empirical relation has been established to express the resistivity at — 195°C in terms of weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution. It is easy to make supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium and to observe aging phenomena. The optimum aging temperature, as in the case for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron, occurs at the temperature for which the time necessary for a single place-change in diffusion is about 1 to 10 millisec. This means for nitrogen in columbium that significant property changes should take place for this alloy at about 400" to 500°C in reasonable time intervals. Results of such aging experiments are

Since January 1959 a zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation at Blackwell, Okla., producing 99.995+ zinc from the output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyro-metallurgical unit with principal dimensions horizonhl permitting one floor operation. It is very ruggedly constructed. Furthermore it is not subjected to deterioration from high concentrations of iron in the feed metal because the boiling units are separate from the rectification columns and constructed with silicon carbide brick arches through which the heat is transferred radiantly to the zinc. A zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation since January 1959 at the Blackwell, Okla. plant of the Blackwell Zinc Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc. Developed by the company&apos;s technical and operating staffs, the new refiner produces special high-grade zinc (nominally 99.995+ pct Zn) from the prime western1 slab output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyromet-allurgical, high-capacity unit employing fractional distillation to separate zinc from its impurities, consisting principally of lead, cadmium, and iron. In prime western slab, these elements may vary in concentration from 0.005 to 1.6 pct. Table I shows the impurities usually encountered in the Blackwell prime western metal fed to the refiner together with their boiling points and vapor pressures at 907oC. The commercial pyrometallurgical smelting processes for extracting zinc from ore include distillation from retorts and a limited degree of refining can be accomplished by redistillation in similar retorts. To achieve special high-grade purity, an impractical number of batch redistillations would be required, however, with an accompanying loss of much metal. A continuously operated and integrated unit is required in which fractional vaporization and condensation can take place in a large number of stages. The first commercial continuously operated unit was developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co.4 In the separation of any two substances the degree of separation is limited if a mixture exists having a constant boiling point. The Zn-cd5 and Zn-pb6 systems contain no constant boiling points and hence these metals may be separated to any degree of purity. Basically, the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc involves three steps: a) iron, copper, and other metals having no appreciable vapor pressures at 907ºC concentrate in the bath when the impure zinc is boiled, b) lead, bismuth, antimony, and other metals having boiling points above but closer to that of zinc are selectively condensed from the vapor boiled from the bath, and c) cadmium and other metals having lower boiling points than zinc are fractionally distilled by reboiling and subsequent condensation of the zinc from the vapor. The boiling and condensation of zinc must be conducted in vessels constructed of materials which are refractory at the temperature involved (907 ºC) and it is highly desirable that they also be resistant to attack by the various metals. This requirement dictates construction from relatively small, simply shaped pieces which limits the pressures which may be employed to avoid leakage through the numerous joints. Stresses induced must be limited essentially to compressive ones and suitable provision must be made to permit thermal expansion of the components in order to minimize these stresses. Where heat is to be added for boiling or removed for condensation, refractory material through which the heat flows must have a high thermal conductivity. Silicon carbide is highly conductive but is subject to attack by iron and is expensive compared to other commonly employed refractories. A hard, dense aluminous fireclay is well suited to contain these metals where high thermal conductivity is not required. Zinc will penetrate the pores of fireclay brick but only to a limited depth in an exterior wall and has little effect other than an increase in weight and conductivity. The design objectives of the Amax refiner were: a) to achieve a long life by heavy, rugged construction and by employing silicon carbide refractories only where required for heat conductivity and not in contact with liquids of high iron concentrations, b) to simplify operation, manning and control by essentially horizontal construction, and c) to obtain high capacity in a single unit. The use of alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors for the uranium minerals brannerite and uranothorite was investigated. In particular a detailed flotation study was carried out using isooctyl acid phosphate as a promoter. Tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake ore analyzing 0.11% U 3 O 8, chiefly as brannerite, and approximately 9% pyrite. Pyrite was floated with conventional reagents; the flotation of brannerite from the sulfide tails was studied to determine the optimum pH and pulp density to employ with isooctyl phosphate. 4 uranium recovery of over 90% was possible with a selectivity index of 8.95 when these tails were floated at 17% solids and a pH of 1.7. The effect of various modifying agents was also investigated. Aluminum sulfate, lactic acid and sodium silicate improved the selectivity of collection yielding selectivity indices of 9.5 to 11.5. Ferric chloride was found to be a depressant for brannerite. A Bancroft ore which analyzed 0.13% U308, and contained uranothorite was also amenable to flotation using isooctyl acid phosphate. The composite uranium concentrate obtained assayed 0.41% U308 at a recovery of 95.3% and a ratio of concentration of 3.24. Previous investigations1,2 on the flotation of brannerite, pitchblende, uraninite and/or uranothorite from various Canadian ores showed that fatty acids, including oleic acid and tall oils, petroleum sulfo-nates and alkyl acid phosphates, were suitable collectors for these uranium minerals. Additional work carried out by the Mines Branch in Ottawa on brannerite ores from the Elliot Lake area3 used the tall oil Acintol FA-1, or FA-2, as a collector. A recovery of 92% of the uranium in a concentrate which contained about 55% of the weight and assayed 0.2% U3O8 was obtained from a feed of 0.1% U308 in this latter instance. Eigeles et a1.4 carried out flotation on pitchblende ores and found that the most promising results were obtained with alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors. Within the homologous series of alkyl phosphates, the best flotation characteristics were displayed by isooctyl phosphates. Further, isooctyl phosphate derivatives were much less sensitive to hardness forming salts than oleic acid, enabling all flotation tests to be made with tap water. This paper describes tests employing alkyl acid phosphates for the flotation of ores containing brannerite and uranothorite. The flotation work described herein was conducted in conjunction with the development of a leaching process for Elliot Lake, Ontario, brannerite ores. In this process pyrite in the ore was concentrated by flotation and roasted, providing sulfur dioxide which was used to produce sulfuric acid in situ in a liquid-solid extraction process. A 40% conversion to sulfuric acid was indicated at a leaching temperature of 80°C; this resulted in the extraction of 93% of the total uranium after a contact period of 6 hr. A rotary kiln was used as a leaching vessel. Preconcentration by flotation was studied in conjunction with the above process to reduce the bulk of solids for leaching and, consequently, capital expenditure. The materials and methods used in this study will be described initially. Then the results will be presented in two sections, the first dealing with the brannerite ore, and the second with the uranothorite. Finally an economic analysis of the results on the brannerite material will be made. MATERIALS AND METHODS The two ore samples examined were from uranium-producing mines. One was a brannerite ore, a uraniferous quartz pebble conglomerate from the Elliot Lake area, which contained 0.11% U3O8, 4.3% S and 4.5% total Fe. Mineralogical studies of similar samples indicated the presence of quartz, microcline, sericite, pyrite and minor quantities of rutile, pyrrho-tite and zircon. The other ore was from a biotite-rich pegmatite in the Bancroft area; feldspar, quartz and biotite formed the major gangue components.
