In secondary precious metals refining, the feed to the plant itself is a waste generated in manufacturing processes. Constant changes in manufacturing processes produce ever changing feed materials to the secondary PGM (platinum Group Metals) refineries. After extracting the precious metals, secondary wastes are generated. The discharge of effluent is dictated by both the PGM losses in wastes and the regulatory mandates. This paper will discuss some. of the conventional as well as some newer approaches to face both the challenges.

The Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee has historically been one of the most active and engaged DFI committees and has performed or spearheaded a number of research projects via the DFI Committee Project Fund (CPF). ICI has developed a new electrical shotfiring system which has markedly improved safety features and operational advantages over existing initiating systems. The development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and the related product 'Magna' Primer were described in a paper presented at the 1981 S.E.E. Annual Conference. Since then the system has been adopted in many different applications and conditions around the world. The present paper describes these applications, the experience gained and the more recent developments which have taken place.

Gold The gold market generally was listless in 1992, although investors returned to the metal in the fourth quarter. The gold price declined for the second year in a row, averaging $11.05/g ($343.76/ oz), 5.2% lower than the $11.65/g ($362.44/oz) seen in 1991. The average price has declined more than 23% since 1987, when gold averaged $14.36/g

The present article calls attention to the activities of a committee on coal research of the sister society of Economic Geologists. The field of coal geology crosses the boundary between the two societies and joint meetings are as applicable here as in the metallic and other nonfuel fields of mining and natural resources recovery. The six fields of coal geology are briefly described and some of the ways in which they touch on coal mining, preparation, and recovery briefly indicated.

Many existing bridge abutments on the soft ground laterally move and their many damage examples have been reported. An essential cause for the troubles of the lateral movements may be the lack of examinations for the lateral earth pressure acting on its foundation piles. In the present paper, actual movement condition of existing bridge abutments is first summarized, and then the author establishes a practical and systematical design method for bridge abutment foundation piles, including the examination for the passive pile.

Two 32 foot x 14% foot, 6.4 MW autogenous mills have been installed in the Mount Isa Mines Copper Concentrator to replace the fine crushing plant, fine ore bin, rod mills and primary ball mills. This paper describes the reasons for the change, the rationale for the new circuit design and configuration, the design and scale-up processes used to size the mills, considerations for the installation of large mills inside an operating concentrator and some early operating data.

The paper presents the development of a thermodynamic based network analysis model. It uses transient heat flow algorithm for computing the heat flow from strata and predicts the environmental condition in different branches of the network. Along with the environmental condition, the mass flow distribution in network is computed by using nodal pressure method based on linear theory approach. The algorithm has been coded using object oriented programming approach and it has been validated in actual field condition. The correlation is satisfactory.

Computer technology in the mining activities of our company has been applied in the last decade. In this presentation the experience gained by applying this computer technology in mining spescific applications are reported. Attention is given to the problems phased out and to the methodology used for software selection, centralized and decentralized development, data processing personnel and end users training and support. The problem of fluid flow from a well into a horizontal fracture has been studied using a nonlinear coupled hydromechanical finite element model. Such an approach is required due to the strong nonlinearity and anisotropy of deformation and fluid flow moduli introduced by the presence of the fracture. The resulting nonuniform total stress field invalidates the application of the conventional fluid flow techniques to the problem. Stable convergent solution from the above analysis are verified by a coupled steady state algorithm.

The cost of constantly extending a decline tunnel that plays a part in the actual extractive process is a revenue cost. The characteristics of such a decline tunnel are that it is dug in a series of relatively small excavations. It follows the ore body and is dug as close to the ore body as practicable. In addition, the decline allows for the extraction of ore in the immediate vicinity, with the ore being extracted in a relatively short period of time.

The paper describes the design and operation of pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers. The advantages, which the columns offer, include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation, containment of noxious vapors and reduced crud formation. In addition to the description of operation, the paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also delineates potential advantages of the pulsed column in copper solvent extraction.

A number of Nigerian iron ore deposits have been upgraded to the specifications of concentrates for the blast furnace and the direct reduction iron- and steel-making plants. Depending on the mineralogy of the ore deposits, the techniques of oil agglomeration, magnetizing reduction, washing and scrubbing, gravity concentration, and reverse froth flotation have been utilized. A mode of distributive management of the deposits, in the direction of their technoeconomic utilization in the country's developing iron and steel plants, is presented.

DURING 1950 the jet-piercing process was used commercially in the piercing of primary blast- holes in magnetic taconite at the preliminary taconite plant of the Erie Mining Co., Aurora, Minn. The Erie Mining Co. purchased a jet-piercing ma- chine and associated equipment in 1949, and the machine has been in operation since its installation in the summer of that year. An overall view of the pit with the JPM-1 jet-piercing machine in operation is shown in Fig. 1.

To study the ventilation of a mine (improve on the existing situation, examine extension projects) the calculation program used must take into account all the resistance values in the branches of the network. These resistance values are generally determined by measurements, which are accurate to a greater or lesser extent. In order to arrive by calculation at the flowrates measured :n the mine at a given moment, the resistance values have tto be adjusted experimentally. This manual operation is lengthy and delicate.

When the human eye fails in the evaluation of quality parameters in the extraction of minerals the use of laser-induced fluorescence analysis (LIF) can supply more detailed information on the composition of rocks. On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.
