With the pressure on mine and metallurgical managers to take accountability for responsible corporate governance in their operational area, it is no longer acceptable to rely on central departments in the organization to manage safety, health and environmental impacts of the company?s processes. Environmental impacts exist because of the production or mining process. Some of the inputs to the process are natural resources and some of the outputs of the process are the inputs to the environmental control equipment, plant and the environment itself. Environmental management therefore needs to be incorporated in production management to effectively control and reduce the impacts. Many aspects of environmental management are identical to production management and the systems to manage them will likewise be very similar. By examining key components of these two management systems a decision can be made whether environmental management and production management are structurally similar and can be integrated into a combined IT solution.

The discovery of oil in the Powder Wash stricture in northwestern Colorado late in the fall of 1936 is the most important development in Colorado since oil was first discovered in the Moffat dome in the same county in 1923. The Powder Wash structure gives promise of developing into an oil and gas field of major proportions and is of particular interest because the oil was found in Tertiary rocks of Eocene age, which heretofore had been productive in the Rocky Mountain region of gas only, and very few of the many structures of this kind have been tested because it was believed that oil production probably would be confined to rocks of Cretaceous age only, and these were, in most instances, at excessive drilling depths. Waste disposal underground is the most effective method when viewed from an environmental aspect. As costs of other methods of disposal continue to escalate, the cost effectiveness of underground disposal during the mining cycle becomes increasingly attractive. The use of concrete for sealing abandoned mines has proved to be suspect when associated with a relatively incompetent adjacent strata due to its shrinkage characteristics. Complete failure of the plug has been known to occur in some instances. A more effective, cost competitive seal can be obtained using pneumatically stowed material and incorporating a polyurethane grout, which has greater adhesion characteristics than concrete. Injection of the surrounding strata and of the stowed material helps to ensure an impervious barrier and prevent the plug from moving when subject to high pressure heads. When properly placed, impervious seals cause the old workings to flood, raise the mine pool level, and thus eventually eliminate the potential for oxidation, which is the primary cause of acidity in the water

This contribution is prompted by the fact that the writer has recently published an article" which has in part the same general conclusions as B. S. Butler's, namely, the form of the standard mineral paragenesis in hypogene deposits and the parallel transition from early high temperature acid to late low temperature alkaline or neutral solutions. Since the writer also recognizes that he is not fully qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, this discussion will be limited to summarizing other observations and will suggest how Butler's Table II might be made more effective. The form of Butler's table is not unlike that widely used by European geologists30 in which the various minerals are related to the types of ore fluids-pegmatitic, pneumatolic and hydrothermal. Thus the decrease in temperature and change in pH of the ore- bearing fluids as recognized by Butler may also be paralleled by perhaps even greater changes in composition, density, and character.

A combination of a slurry trench with dewatering successfully controlled groundwater for a large sloped excavation immediately adjacent to the Arkansas River. The Murray Hydro Electric Project required excavation through sand and gravel to bedrock, 85 feet below high water in the River. The perimeter system of deep wells pumping up to 25,000 GPM (1,600 1/sec) lowered the water level to 15 feet (4.6 m) above bedrock. A short soil/bentonite slurry trench near the toe of the slope cut off the residual head. The method cut six weeks from the critical path. Design of the slopes and the dewatering system demanded high safety factors because of risk to existing Lock and Dam No. 7. A localized pocket of soft organic clay was supported by a rock filled bolster. A major flood event was successfully withstood. The method can be applied to large civil excavations and open pit mines.

Corrosion tests by corrosive alumina-lime slags were carried out on commercial high alumina bricks used in steel ladle linings and model refractories (with different raw materials : bauxite, andalusite, and different microstructures). Using (SEM) scanning electron microscope and (EDS) energy dispersive spectroscopy, microstructures of slag-corroded refractory interfaces were studied in detail. The monomineral and glassy phases, the composition of reaction products and chemical profiles were determined. A thermochemical analysis based on phase equilibrium diagrams has permitted to estimate the proportion and the composition of the high temperature intergranular liquid phase. These data were compared to the experimental microanalysis results. The viscosity of the high temperature liquids were calculated according to Urbain 's model and the relationship between the viscosity and the penetration of liquid phases were discussed. These theorical and experimental results were used to understand the complex phenomena of slag penetration and corrosion of andalusite and bauxite refractories at high temperature and to propose new ways of improvements for the formulation of high alumina refractories.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Forecasts of future timber consumption in soft-coal mining are handicapped by the lack of adequate experience records for estimating properly the timber requirements of the industry. Data were obtained from plants where records are kept or from operators who collected the information and to these were added composite figures for the continental United States in 1905 and 19191 and for central and western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928,000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross ban used per ton of coal mined and the percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. The paper by Professors Sun and Mitchell illustrates the value of ultrasonics as a tool for the mineral engineer. In particular, it opens up a number of possibilities to those interested in the field of comminution. The provision of desliming technique, which is thorough as well as rapid, is a distinct contribution, but the data of the paper suggest applications beyond desliming, in that the same treatments may be useful for size determination purposes. Fig. 1 shows that a marked dependence exists between particle size and the height to which it can be elevated by ultrasonic vibrations. While the curves are only extended down to a size of about 100 p, the fact that they appear to be increasing in slope in this range suggests that the separation may be even more marked here. This, we feel, is very strong evidence that a method for fine sizing could be developed to use ultra- sonic waves as the separating force.

The differentiation between saturated and un-saturated soils becomes necessary due to basic differences in their nature and engineering behavior. The most important difference is the existence of a suction zone, above the water table, in unsaturated soils. Pore water pressure in this zone is always negative and the shear strength is greater than the one in saturated soils. This is due to an occasional and apparent component in the Mohr-Coulomb equation, which appears in unsaturated soils. In slope stability analysis of unsaturated soils, the factor of safety increases due to this occasional cohesion component of the shear strength. However, the suction zone tends to disappear because of rainfall. In these cases the factor of safety decreases and eventually the slope may fail. In this article, a parametric study of the effect of suction zone fluctuation due to precipitation in slope stability is examined. For this purpose a Combined Hydrology and Stability Model (CHASM) has been applied.

The uranium mill at Gunnison, Colorado, started crushing ore Dec. 31,1957, and has now been operating four months. The acid leached ore is washed by counter-current decantation through a system of four classifiers and four thickeners and most of the dissolved uranium reports in the overflow from the first washing thickener. This uranium is extracted from the aqueous pregnant solution by solvent extraction using di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid and tri-butyl phosphate dissolved in a high-flash-point kerosene as the extracting organic. The pregnant organic is then stripped with soda ash solution. The uranium bearing soda ash solution is filtered to remove insoluble carbonates and any sediment reaching that part of the circuit. The clarified carbonate pregnant solution is then acidified to 3 pH, heated to 180°F to drive off the last traces of CO2, and the uranium finally precipitated as yellow cake with MgO.

Significant advances in regional geochemical exploration techniques have been made over the last 5 years in the search for gold deposits. This has occurred largely by the development of the bulk cyanide ex- tractable gold (BLEG) also known as the Bulk Cyanide Leach (BCL) tech- nique. The technique has been developed and designed for Australian conditions and has two main ad- vantages over the pan concentrate technique preferred by many ex- plorationalists, viz:,. 1. It is designed to collect ultra fine gold common to epithermal and other north Queensland types of gold deposits. 2. The large sample (approx.5 kg) allows very low detection levels, ranging between 0.1 and 0.05 ppb Au. The use of the BLEG technique in exploration has led to the discovery of the Wirralie gold deposit and numerous other epithermal gold prospects previously undetected by pan concentrate and minus 80 mesh (pathfinder elements) surveys in the Drummond Basin.

The productivity of a mine has the same goals as the quest to complete a tunnel project both safely and within time. A key aspect to achieving this goal is to excavate and support the working face as quickly as possible, allowing early re-entry to start construction of the next advance in safety. As with tunnels, the use of high performance wet-mix sprayed concrete has increased in mines dramatically over the last few years, and year on year has seen a stepwise increase in shotcrete performance, particularly in the first few hours. Shotcrete early age strength development clearly offers mining teams enormous advantages by allowing early, safe re-entry to the face. This paper illustrates that in the hard rock tunnelling field, modern shotcrete approaches do not cause delays in re-entry, but allow a continuous construction cycle. Furthermore, the paper identifies the most suitable, up-to-date shotcrete admixture and equipment technology available to the mining community to permit early re-entry.

A LITERATURE survey1-' of sintering metal pow-A ders and powder compacts indicates that studies have so far been confined primarily to the latter stages of sintering in relatively coarse powders. Presumably this is due to the difficult techniques associated with studies of the early stages of sintering. Recent experimental and theoretical investigationsL-" on the preparation and the magnetic properties of ultrafine ferromagnetic powders suggest the possi- bility of following the sintering process from a very much earlier stage than has previously been considered. It is now well-known that ferromagnetic powder particles which are below a critical size behave as single domains and exhibit permanent magnet qualities characterized by a very high coercive force. When the same particles are fully sintered, the coercive force decreases to very low values corresponding to those of the solid metal. Thus the coercive force appears as a sensitive parameter which may be measured to study the early stages of sintering. To determine the feasibility of this technique, experi-

The final purpose of exploration is to esti- mate the grade and tonnage of the various qualities of ore contained in a given mineral deposit. This estimation cannot be directly carried out on the whole of the ore body. It usually requires four steps: Core Drilling Campaign The ore body is represented by a series of cores further divided into core sections of equal or unequal length. Core Splitting The core sections are longitudinally split into two halves: the first half is kept for various examinations and physical measurements, and stored for further reference; the second half (core sample) is used for determination of the chemical analysis. Core Sample Reduction The chemical analysis cannot be directly per- formed on the core samples. It requires the constitution of assay portions usually weighing from a few decigrams to one gram (more in precious metals assaying) and passing through a 100 or 150 mesh screen.

Fassell (University of Utah, Salt Lake City)—The authors of this paper should be complimented on the experimental techniques they have employed to investigate the rate of solution of galena in sodium hydroxide solution. Studies of this type are important not only as a practical means of leaching normally non-leachable substances, but also to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface. There is some question, however, as to the conclusions which have been drawn by these authors concerning their proposed mechanism. Unfortunately, the contribution of OH- was not definitely established in their work, and concentrations less than 0.5 N NaOH evidently were not investigated. The pressure data at 123°C and 0.5 N NaOH were used to determine pressure dependency and the subsequent model proposed was taken as correct on the basis of the three points presented in Fig. 5 of the paper. This report briefly reviews the measurements and interpretation of adhesion forces measured between microscopic probes and substrates having micro- and nanoscaled roughness characteristics that were recently conducted at Michigan Tech using atomic force microscopy. The laboratory study concentrated on both rigid and deformable materials, with the probes larger than the size of roughness features of interacting surfaces. For such systems, a detailed surface characterization in terms of roughness parameters, asperity size and shape, and spacing between asperities, as well as analysis of deformation of materials is required. Analysis of the experimental data can be done with theoretical models, which are suitable for rough surfaces and therefore allows to normalize the measured forces. Alternatively, loading of the probe during adhesion force measurements can be managed properly to control deformations of the nano-scaled surface irregularities. Controlling the deformation reduces and even eliminates the effects of nano-roughness on the probesubstrate contact area, promoting conditions described by the contact mechanics models for the sphere-smooth substrate system.

The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

The expert system for coal preparation plant design mainly solves the crux--separation flowsheet design and optimization of product structure. There are twelve basic flowsheets available in the system which are representative of financial plants. The system can select better flowsheets automatically according to the property of feed and scale of plant. Then, it can choose the best flowsheet and product model from the better flowsheets through analysis and optimum calculation. The expert system is made up in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and consists of three sub-systems: Lump and grain coal system, coal slimes processing system, and raw coal system. Several representation methods, such as production rule, procedure, and object-oriented programming, are used to express the expert's knowledge in the system. To decide the optimum product structure, Zangwill's method is used to make an advance product model. The expert system has the performance of interpretation strategy, by 'tracer" technology and pre-arrangement text, and of learning new expert's knowledge.
