Recent tailings dam failures have heightened public awareness of the hazard posed by storage facilities for mining waste, illustrating the need for a more critical examination of tailings dam breach mechanisms and the potential mobility of liquefied tailings. Knowledge from tailings dam breach studies will help improve safety and risk management through more accurate inundation maps, dam consequence classifications and emergency preparedness plans. Tailings dams differ from conventional water retaining dams, although dam breach relationships used in practice rely heavily on relationships derived for breach processes from the latter. Physical modelling offers a controlled environment to advance the understanding of tailings dam breach processes, thereby allowing for modelling of simple geometry and boundary conditions to test hypotheses. The performed experiments investigate prototypical tailings dam configurations and material behaviour, with the objective of validating numerical models that will enable practitioners to better assess and mitigate tailings flows resulting from tailings dam failures. Research conducted in the Queen’s University Landslide Flume at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory has investigated the breaching of 1 m high dams with tailings geometry by overtopping initiated by a v-notch incised in the dam crest. This paper presents the initial results of the next stage of this research comparing the outflow hydrograph following loss of containment caused by shear failure to overtopping initiated by notch flow. The two dam experiments presented are constructed with similar dam and reservoir geometries allowing for a direct comparison of the effect on the outflow hydrograph of each failure event. Preliminary outcomes suggest that although both dam failure events are triggered from separate mechanisms their geometries allow for similar values of Q_peak to be reached. Future work is currently planned to expand the shear test series to explore the influence of failure mechanism on the outflow hydrograph.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. The need for an integrated approach to optimization of unit operations in both the pit and the mill has long been recognized, but the complexity and nature of the overall problem has up to now resisted solution. This paper reports on a modeling methodology which couples symbolic and numeric computing to unify operations in both the pit and mill. The ultimate goal of this work is to optimize all operations that are influenced by blasting. Blasting plays a key role in all facets of operations. Obviously, drilling and blasting costs are determined by blast design, but the down-stream costs that are closely related to blasting results are often treated as separate functions: loading, hauling, cleanup, and crushing and grinding are all heavily influenced. Diggablilty and bucket fill factor are a function of fragmentation, the condition of the floor and uniformity in the shape of the muck pile. Likewise, cycle times and loading delays partially determine haul cycles, while fragmentation distribution and size determines the efficiency of truck loading. Removal and breakage of oversize causes loading delays and increases cleanup costs. The influence of blasting doesn't stop at the crusher. Mill productivity, power consumption, and maintenance are a function of the feed. Even at the SAG mill a reduction of a critical particle size during blasting can increase throughput. Thus, a bottle-neck for production far removed from unit operations in the pit can be alleviated by a modification in blast design. The question is: how do we optimize blasting with respect not only to itself but to al\ related mining and milling operations? For that matter, how do we even model blasting so that we can control the results of a blast?

"Cu/Ni multilayers exhibiting giant magnetoresistance were deposited from a single electrolyte under stepped potentiostatic control. To enable transport measurements to be made without remounting the multilayer film, we developed a novel method that involved plating on a thin metallic basal layer atop a rigid non-conducting Si substrate. Rotating ring-disk electrode techniques were used to monitor the composition and thickness of individual plated layers. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the interfaces between adjacent layers were sharp and that the structure of the layers was uniform throughout the film. Atomic force microscopy images indicated that the film's surface was smooth and free of defects.ELECTRODEPOSITION OF THIN MULTILAYER MAGNETIC MATERIALSI. IntroductionElectrodeposition of compositionally modulated films will in all likelihood continue to be used to produce the read heads for stored magnetic data. However, the next generation of head materials will require both improved sensitivity and reduced film thickness. Certain multi layers consisting of thin alternating ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers exhibit giant magneto resistance and consequently are promising candidates for read head applications. We have successfully made multilayer films with giant magnetoresistance that have total thicknesses as low as 25 nm, approximately 120 times thinner than the thinnest similar films reported in the literature. This paper describes early results from our work on electrodeposition and characterization of Cu/Ni multilayers, a model system with enhanced magnetic and mechanical properties, including the GMR effect. The structure and composition of the multilayers were determined using TEM, AFM, and electrochemical methods, and their magnetoresistance was measured by the standard four-probe technique. A novel method developed in this work enabled the transport properties of the ultrathin films to be measured reliably without the need to dissolve the cathode or handle the films. To provide a context for these results, short accounts of other work on giant magnetoresistance and multilayer electrodeposition are also included."

"Liberation (QEM-SCAN) and surface chemical (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry -ToF-SIMS) analyses have been undertaken on plant Pb circuit flotation samples with the aim of defining the factors resulting in sub-optimal recovery. Lead flotation circuit feed, cleaner concentrate and tails samples were examined on a size-by-size basis using QEM-SCAN. Sulfide minerals accounted for approximately one third of the flotation feed with pyrite making up 16 wt.%, followed by sphalerite (13 wt.%) and galena (3 wt.%). Non-sulfide gangue minerals comprised calcium carbonates calcite (26 wt.%), dolomite (14 wt.%) with quartz, feldspars and barite all contributing > 5 wt.%. QEM-SCAN analysis indicated that liberation was not the primary cause of the poor flotation response. Principal component analysis was applied to the ToF-SIMS data derived from five samples (as for QEM-SCAN plus rougher concentrate and tails) to enable identification of correlated surface chemical components. Although a significant range of correlations were observed we focus here on those that show a discernible pattern throughout the float circuit. It was found that for the flotation feed the surface of galena were largely obscured but where Pb was observed there was a strong correlation to surface Fe. For the rougher and cleaner concentrates the galena surfaces were relatively clean with no correlation to Fe for the rougher concentrate and minor correlation in the cleaner concentrate. However, in the rougher and cleaner tails the clear correlation of galena with Fe was again apparent. These results suggest, in combination with prior studies of pyrite morphology, that the principal factor effecting grade is the rapid oxidation of the framboidal pyrite resulting in the contamination of the galena surface with a high loading of hydrophilic oxidised Fe species, thus depressing flotation."

(communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

"The selection of a site for plant facilities is a function of several factors and has as its objective the maximization of profits, given fixed markets and sources of raw material locations. In practice there are several sites, any one of which or a combination of two or more would be suitable to meet the basic requirements of source of supply of raw material and labour and still fulfill market demands. The model used to select the optimum profit combination utilizes both computer programs and traditional financial analysis techniques. Of the three computer programs used in the mode), one is a linear program and another is a transportation simulator. Basic cost and price data are required. In examining costs, three levels are used: (a) distribution costs of raw material to the plant and finished goods to the market; (b) direct production costs at the plant, such as labour and locally supplied material; and (c) capital and overhead costs at the plant, such as construction costs, taxes, insurance, and federal and provincial cost allowances. The direct costs generally depend on the scale of operations, so that a large plant in one location may have a lower unit cost than two smaller plants. This, of course, must be balanced against distribution costs. In examining profit, it is necessary to think in terms of the price and volume of sales at each of the market locations. Given basic data and relationships, the model can be used to optimally locate production facilities or, alter-natively, optimally structure a transportation network given existing locations of plants and markets. It is dynamic to the extent that it can react to changes in volume, price and cost to optimally locate an additional plant, the expansion of existing plants, the shutting down or cutting back of plants, or the restructuring of distribution networks."

Reagents form a crucial part of flotation process as they have the power to control the surface properties of minerals. In case of coal flotation, collectors and frothers are two the important and commonly used reagents. But other types of reagents such as promoters, modifiers and depressants are also finding wide applications because of their availability to improve selectivity and increase recovery. Because of these chemicals the scenario has changed from flotation being used mostly for high rank hydrophobic coals to low rank, oxidised or inferior coals. In the present work a case is presented in which two non-ionic surfactants (abbreviated as A & B) known to act as emulsifier have been studied to get a better flotation performance for a preparation plant with varying feed characteristics. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted with both the surfactants using three feed samples of the plant by varying the dosage at three different levels. The highest combustible matter recovery (more than 80%) was obtained for surfactant B at a dosage of 75 ppm (parts per million) for feed 1. But at the same dosage the recovery decreased by 21% and 10.2 % respectively for feed 2 and 3. On the other hand surfactant A showed a consistent result for all the three feed samples giving the highest value at a dosage of 50 ppm followed by a decrease beyond this point. The tests were complemented by contact angle measurements that demonstrated the same trend. In addition to this the reproducibility of data for Surfactant A was checked and found that the standard deviations for both separation efficiency and combustible matter recovery were within the permissible range (less than 5%). Finally an in-plant process optimization study to evaluate the performance and applicability of surfactant A at industrial level was done and has been discussed.

Blasting operations produces gases and fumes that may be toxic or non-toxic in nature. A detonation of commercial explosives such as ANFO, emulsion, and dynamite would ideally produce only nontoxic products such as steam (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2). However, in the real world, the detonation of explosives produces toxic products such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). The focus of this study is the blast fumes entrapped in the muckpile. Fume clearance and workplace re-entry time studies performed in the past have overlooked the toxic gases entrapped in the muckpile. Studies show that as much as 60% to 70% of the fumes or gases produced during blasting underground can remain entrapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muckpile. The toxic fumes trapped inside the muckpile are slowly released and could be fully uncovered during the mucking process. Exposure to these gases or fumes is hazardous to mine workers. In this study, author have analyzed the nature of fume flow, i.e. accurately predicting where and how the fumes flow after an underground development/tunnel blast. This will help in determining i) precise re-entry times for the workers ii) rate and direction of the fume flow. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a mathematical simulation technique that predicts fluid dynamics phenomena is used for this purpose. CFD is preferred over physical models because it is inexpensive, once the accuracy is established, a wide range of scenarios can be simulated quickly, and the toxic gas flow patterns through underground openings can be analyzed efficiently. For this study, CFD is performed using SC/Tetra software owned by MSC software company.

As the global demand for metal values expands, it becomes increasingly important to create more sustainable mining operations. Consequently, considerable research and technology development is required to produce processes which are both more energy efficient and have a minimal environmental impact. One potential technology is the utilisation of microwave pre-treatment to reduce the energy requirements in comminution. Microwaves can preferentially heat the valuable mineral phases in an ore and the resulting differential thermal expansion leads to the formation of microfractures along the grain boundaries. As a result of the preferential heating, ore competency is reduced, mineral liberation is enhanced, a coarser grind size can be employed, and plant throughput can be increased. Furthermore, microwave pre-treatment can be combined with advanced ore sorting, to decrease the quantity of gangue material processed downstream and hence reduce tailings production. Previous studies on the microwave treatment of ores over the last 30 years have mainly been limited to low power bench-scale studies and there is a paucity of information on pilot and/or commercial scale studies. In the present research, the microwave heating behaviours of over 40 ores have been studied at the bench-scale. These results were used to generate a database, from which a unique classification system was developed. This system was used to rank the amenability of any given ore for microwave pre-treatment. This knowledge can be employed to predict the performance of the ores in the high-power pilot scale tests and thus can be used as a pre-screening tool. The effects of high-power microwave pre-treatment on grindability and liberation were reported. Additionally, the ore sorting potential was evaluated using a combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and microwave infrared (MW/IR).

Young professionals are riding the current wave of high demand for their services and relatively little competition for placements. The attraction and retention of quality incumbents has therefore become a significant strategic issue for companies in our industry. Money is important, but poorly structured career development and lack of learning opportunities can discourage the highest paid professionals from being enthusiastic and striving for excellence. This will inevitably lead to the search for a new position. Important factors at play include the young professionalÆs lack of understanding of career pathways and poor quality, or lack of, structured on-the-job training and professional development. Too often young and not so young professionals are faced with the reality that fabulous looking (and paying) jobs can be quickly reduced to the monotony of repetitive tasks in an isolating environment. While it is the responsibility of the incumbent to manage their own career and professional development, without experience, how is anyone meant to understand the importance of their roles and the options for career development? Mentoring is therefore essential to the strategic plans of every organisation and the strategic plans of every professional. Mentors will accelerate learning, guide decision making and develop both competency and confidence as they share their experience, both technical and regarding the machinations of a particular discipline, within our industry. Mentors need not be from the same organisation as the mentee and in some cases this may be a distinct advantage. This paper discusses mentoring as an opportunity for young professionals and mentors to initiate and maintain a supportive relationship, the responsibility of management to get mentoring right and the responsibility of young professionals to demand the opportunity for professional development through mentoring.

"The benefits of modern technology can readily be identified with energy availability. A clear correlation has been established between per-capita energy consumption and the GNP for various nations. The United States is an outstanding example of a nation which has benefited from vast energy reserves. The nation is now challenged, how¬ever, by dwindling reserves and the need to develop new sources consistent with the preservation of environmental quality. The development of new, virtually inexhaustible and environmentally acceptable sources cannot be expected for several decades. Meanwhile, we will have to depend on coal, nuclear energy and/or rigorous conservation measures.The net effect of environmental considerations has been to delay and perhaps ultimately eliminate the nuclear energy option as a national energy alternative. This forces a more positive move toward coal as the next major source of electrical power. Our coal resources are large, but the use and production of coal is also a threat to the environment. Thus, we seem to be moving from one major accessible source to another due to environmental concern only to face the probability that the alternative is also environ¬mentally unacceptable.Controversies revolving about energy choices must be resolved by an analysis of the relative benefits and impacts of these two sources and others. The pattern of changing energy sources is not new. We have moved from wood to coal to oil and gas in the past and must learn to adapt in the future. Rational decisions must be made relative to the utilization of intermediate energy sources pending development of promising future approaches. A collapse of current levels of energy supply could threaten our technological society and the means to develop a new energy base."

THE use of organic and inorganic stains has found wide application as a means of detection and estimation of organic fibres. Such stains have enabled the analyst to distinguish between organic fibres of different type and even between wood fibres produced by different processes. Among these stains, aqueous iodine solutions have figured prominently, as in the case of the well-known Sutermeister and Herzberg stains. At the Johns-Manville laboratories, the idea of applying a stain to asbestos fibres was first considered solely as a visual aid in the microscopic examination of such fibres. The staining medium used in this work consisted of a 1 per cent solution of iodine in C.P. glycerine, the latter being used extensively here as a dispersing and mounting liquid for asbestos fibre. This iodine solution was found to have distinct staining properties when used on the local chrysotile fibres, and to improve greatly their visibility under the microscope. It was soon revealed, however, that this staining is apparently limited to the chrysotile variety of asbestos, as against other varieties. It can be readily seen that, if such were the case, the staining test would become a very useful tool in differentiating between chrysotile fibre and the other mineral fibres, without recourse to a lengthy chemical analysis. Hence this investigation was launched, with the purpose of obtaining more information as to the selectivity of this stain as well as its mechanism. The only previous work of this nature that could be found in the literature was that of Van Winsen and Graham (1, 2, 3) on the adsorption of erioviolet dye by serpentine and related magnesia minerals. However, these authors did not refer to any specific behaviour of chrysotile as against other types of asbestos fibre.

"Peñasquito is a complex polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper and is one of the largest producers of gold in Mexico. Mining activity is currently transitioning to a second open pit, Chile Colorado, which will be mined concurrently with the existing open pit, Peñasco. The ore bodies are located within diatreme pipes and into the surrounding sediment formation. In the coming years, mining will be carried out in more sedimentary zones, which are significantly higher in organic carbon content. Organic carbon in the feed influences both flotation and leaching operations. Several changes are being implemented to the Peñasquito flowsheet to mitigate the effects of increased organic carbon in the plant feed. These include the use of alternate reagent schemes, construction of a carbon pre-flotation circuit, implementation of a pre-leach flotation circuit ahead of pyrite leach, and evaluation of a tertiary process for separation of carbon and precious metal minerals.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Peñasquito operation is located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, approximately 200 km from the city of Zacatecas in the Mazapil municipality (Figure 1). Peñasquito has been in operation since 2009, with mining carried out by open-pit methods. Oxide ore has been processed in a heap leach facility and sulfide ore is treated in the sulfide processing plant. The processing capacity of the sulfide plant is 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 production amounted to 465,000 ounces of gold, 17.6 million ounces of silver, 109 million lb of contained lead in lead concentrate, and 263 million lb of contained zinc in zinc concentrate (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). To recover more of the contained gold and silver and to mitigate the impact of increasing organic carbon content in the ore, a number of significant changes are being made to the operation."

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

THE Adanac mine was opened by West Canadian Collieries, Ltd. in 1943, and the question soon arose as to which system of haulage should be selected. Compressed-air locomotives and ropes were rejected on the ground of high cost. Since under the Alberta Mines Act the use of trolley locomotives underground in coal seams is not permitted, the choice lay between storage battery and Diesel locomotives, The preference of the author, who had experience with both in gassy French coal mines prior to 1930, was for Diesel locomotives due to lower cost of installation and greater flexibility and reliability. It was realized that the adoption of Diesels would be somewhat of an innovation since in the United States the mining laws prohibit their use under- ground in coal mines, and in Great Britain in 1943 their use was only in the incipient stage. By 1945, 25 Diesel locomotives were in use underground in gassy mines in Great Britain, and approval had been granted for the use of an additional fifty of two approved types also for gassy mines. Numerous special regulations of the British Coal Mines Act have been formulated to govern the use of Diesel locomotives. For instance, they are not allowed closer than 200 yards from the working face; daily inspections are required; and a weekly checkup and cleaning must be given the engine by a competent engineer. Also, methane content of the air in the roadway can never exceed 1.25 percent, and daily checks must be made if it exceeds 0.75 percent. Under Alberta regulations, we were required to use a flameproof type engine, to be used only in fresh air intake. Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. The principal equipment in the catalyst plants at Ludwigshafen-Oppau was inspected and is presented in the form of flow sheets for the manufacture of four of the principal catalysts. The equipment is in many cases of special design rather than stock items that was built by the company and modified in the coarse of the growth of the high-pressure synthesis of hydrocarbons in Germany. It is believed that if the manufacture of catalysts were to be undertaken elsewhere, the selection of equipment for the operations involved could be made successfully from the guidance furnished by this rather general report. Five additional catalysts are described, also. II. CATALYST 5058 FROM FRESH TUNGSTIC ACID In a supply tank of about 2,000 liters capacity, 500 kg. of tungstic acid (W03.H2O) that contains about 92-93 percent of W03 is dissolved at 60-70° C. in 1,500 liters of mother liquor. The solution is-effected by stirring for about 1-1/2 hours. The mother liquor is obtained from a previous, lot of catalyst and is first adjusted to a concentration of 13 percent 1H3 by passing in gaseous ammonia. The solution is allowed to stand without stirring for 1 hour, then is pumped into the saturating vessel through a cloth filter (three-quarters hr. to one hr.). The saturator is purged with H2S and thereafter the solution, which has been cooled to about 75° C., is heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide with stirring to about 70° C. This charge is slowly cooled to 50°, and then more rapidly to about 20° C. (time of cooling 6-7 hours).

"The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

"This paper deals with the fracturing process of laterally confined blocks of coal subjected to impact indentation. During the test, blocks of coal with approximate dimensions of 10 in. x 10 in. x 6 in. were laterally confined to predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses and then subjected to an impact indentation by dropping coal cutting bits (various shapes) attached to a known weight from a known height. During the test a number of parameters, namely surface strains (using strain gages), penetration depth (using L.V.D.T.) and acoustic emission characteristics were measured. After the test, the fractured surfaces were photographed with the aid of a camera attached to a microscope. The fracture, its intensity and extended zone within the coal blocks were mapped using sonic techniques. By correlating measured parameters, fractured zones under a given set of test parameters were identified and characterized.INTRODUCTION To improve the understanding of basic failure mechanisms in coal cutting, a better knowledge of fracture and crack regions caused by the indentation in coal is needed. This study reports the detailed experimental procedure used in fracture analysis of indentation experiments on coal specimens using the Acoustic Emission (A.E. hereafter) and sonic techniques. The relationship between microcracking and the inelastic deformation of rock was confirmed by a series of experiments in which the A. E. generated by the cracking in the rock specimen were recorded and the number of events were compared to the strain measurement. (Scholz, 1967).According to fracture mechanism theory, crack initiation in brittle materials such as rocks begins from ""flaws"" either pre-existing or induced by the indentation process itself. Rocks are pervaded by natural cracks and pores, from which numerous possibilities for crack initiation arise (Lindquist, Lai and Alm, 1984)."
