This report contains Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 20 samples from5 areas on the arctic slope of Alaska. Two samples were condensates from the South Barrow gasfield, Barrow Lakes area. The remaining 18 samples were crude oils from the following areas: Barrow Lakes, 1 seepage sample; Umiat, 10 well samples; Cape Simpson, 1 seepage sample and 3 well samples; Fish Creek, 2 well samples; and Wolf Creek, I well sample. Table 1 summarizes information on the origin of the crude-oil samples, and table 2 summarizes characteristics of the samples. Item numbers in both tables correspond to item numbers of the analyses at the end of this report, and the samples are referred to by these numbers throughout the text.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the headlines, another epidemic in the United States has continued apace — the opioid epidemic. Half a million opioid overdose deaths have occurred in the United States since 1999, when the opioid epidemic began. The causes of the epidemic include the rise in prescriptions for opioid pain medications, including for work-related pain. Miners and other occupations identified as physically demanding and at higher injury risk have been found to be at increased risk for opioid overdose [1]. However, awareness of the risk factors that might lead to opioid use, the potential hazards associated with their use, and resources to prevent addiction and death can allow miners to make choices that can reduce these risks.

This paper adopts a simple and novel preparation. Taking cellulose as a template, a tubular morphology structure of micro/nano ZnO crystals was obtained by microwave roasting at high temperature. The higher the microwave roasting temperature, the larger the degree of crystallization. The experiments indicate that the best photo catalytic effect can be obtained at 850 : At this temperature, the oxidation of cellulose is complete. Large quantities of hexagonal shaped ZnO crystal can be observed, specifically the (0001) crystal face. Under ultraviolet-visible irradiation, taking long arc mercury lamp as light source, the material had good photocatalytic activity. The decomposing efficiency of methylene blue reaches 97% in 60min, which is superior to that of preparations without templates at the same temperature.

FOR the first ten months of 1942, on which data are available at the time this is written, the coal-mining industry achieved a most creditable safety record, and ha1 figures for the year may show a record surpassing that of 1941 in which the industry reached the best accident rate in its history. The ten- month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1942 was 2.197 fatalities per million tons of coal mined, compared with a revised rate of 2.271 for the same months of 1941. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.139 in 1941 to 2.039 for ten months of this year, and the anthracite rate shows a reduction from 3.707 to 3.699 for the same period.

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.

The initial discovery of gold in the Eastmain River area, 310 km northeast of Chibougamau, was made by Placer Development Limited in 1970. This discovery resulted from the drill testing of an airborne E .M. Target located in an area of extensive glacial overburden, within an unexplored Archean greens tone belt considered prospective for base metal deposits. Intermittent exploration by another company between 1973-1977 failed to obtain promising results and the existing claims were allowed to lapse. In 1981, Placer reactivated the project and initiated intensive exploration during the next two years which included aerial E .M. surveys, claim staking, ground E .M. and magnetic surveys, geological mapping, diamond drilling and attendant borehole P,E.M. surveys. Beginning in 1983, exploration has been conducted on a joint venture basis with Eldor Resources Limited, The greenstone belt under investigation has an arcuate distribution pattern relative to a centrally located granitic core. Occurrences of gold mineralization defined to date are located to the south of the granite along a strike length of 7 km, and appear to be restricted to the lowermost of two mafic volcanic cycles. This lower cycle is dominated by basaltic flows with subordinate rhyolitic flows and pyroclas ties. Concordant, variably magnetic, massive to talcose ultramafic units occur towards the stratigraphic top of the lower mafic volcanic cycle and appear to crudely define areas considered prospective for gold on a regional bases. Economic interest in centered on a s tratabound, siliceous, sulphide-bearing unit hosted in a 15- 25 metre thick sequence of rhyolite tuffs, basalts and intercalated ultramafics, The siliceous ore bearing unit ( interpreted as a recrystallized chert) contains from 10%-30% pyrrhotite and pyrite with subordinate chalcopyri te and minor sphaleri te. Alteration is characterized by mica development, silicification and carbonatization. Garnets are also occasionally present in close proximity to the ore horizon. The sequence is south facing, and overturned to the northeast at 35°-55°. Explora tory drilling in the vicinity of two conductive targets has been on 100 metre centres along a 1 km strike length of the prospective sequence. To the end of 1983, two ore zones (A and B) have been partially drill tested with estimated indicated and inferred geological reserves of 1 million tonnes grading 11.7 g/t gold , 14.7 g/t silver and 0.26% copper. The system is open at depth. This discovery is the result of the effective integration of geophysics and geology with contributions by many over a long period of time. Key events that can be emphasized are: ( 1) initial area selection of a remote greenstone belt in 1969 - albeit for base metal deposits , (2) utilization of an airborne E .M. system which successfully targeted the A Zone in 1970 , (3) the timely reactivation of the project in 1981 and the subsequent recognition that the original discovery represented a sulphide bearing stratabound horizon with implicit volcanogenic connotations , (4) the intensive effort in 1982-83 deploying aerial and ground geophysics coupled to volcanogenic concepts of ore distribution which resulted in the discovery of the B and C Zones in 1982, and (5) the integration of downhole P . E.M. surveys and geology to successfully delineate ore at increasing depths . To the end of 1983 , $2.6 million has been expended, and it is hoped that continued effort will result in the eventual delineation of an economically viable ore deposit for the joint venture partners .

Performance-based approach to design of structures including foundations was adopted after enforcement of the revised Building Standard Law in Japan in 2000. The use of piled-raft foundation is favorable for medium-rise buildings in soft ground because of its good performance. In the design of the piled-raft foundation (Architectural Institute of JAPAN2002), vertical load is usually carried by the raft foundation, while the pile is primarily meant to control settlement of the structure. Shaft friction is expected to be larger in a nodular pile(Karkee, et.al., 1998) since it has larger surface area than a straight pile, and such piles are frequently used in piled-raft foundations. Since few structures with piled-raft foundation exist currently, the settlement characteristics of piled-raft foundation have not been fully clarified. To design piled-raft foundations with better confidence, the mechanism of vertical bearing capacity and the spatial distribution of settlement should be clarified, for which the actual behavior of the building-foundation system needs to be evaluated. This paper presents observations of settlement of a building with a piled-raft foundation at a soft ground site. The building is a steel structure covering an area an 766 m2, and consists of two-storey office block and one-storey warehouse block. The filled ground of about 5-m thickness at the ground surface is underlain by approximately 4-m thick alluvial sand layer below which lies about a 17-m thick alluvial clay layer with SPT N-value less than 2. The piles used in the piled-raft foundation are 12-m long nodular piles with nodal diameter of 500 mm (pile shaft diameter is 400 mm). The bored pre-cast piling method (Karkee, et.al., 1998) was used to install the piles. To evaluate the foundation settlement, the method of analysis of three-dimensional frame system, utilized widely in Japan, was adopted in combination with the foundation system. Basic assumptions were: (i) total ground settlement is evaluated as the sum of immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, (ii) immediate settlement is evaluated from the Mindlin?s solution in which strain dependency of shear modulus of soil is considered, (iii) settlement in clayey layers is evaluated by the one-dimensional consolidation theory, and (iv) shear spring between soil and pile shaft is represented by a hyperbolic function. The applicability of the method of analysis was verified by comparison with results of field monitoring of building settlement.

Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

As we are all aware, the impacts of the 1977 Surface Mining Act and the implementing OSM Regulations require application of new, as well as existing, equipment and technologies. Our firm recently completed (June, 1979) a study for the Department of Energy titled "Analysis of the Impact of Public Law 95-87 on Mining Performance." The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of the Act and its regulations on mining performance in order to provide recommendations to alleviate the impacts identified, including identification of research needs. This paper presents some of the highlights of that report: projected cost increases; additional equipment needed for compliance; review of methods currently practiced or those which can be modified; and will focus particulary on equipment and technology applications.

DESPITE the zero weather of Monday, the morning meeting on nonferrous ore-reduction metallurgy got under way promptly under the efficient control of Arthur A. Center. The first and third portions of the paper on the Tri-State region were presented by B. M. O&apos;Harra, with R. H. Lowe substituting for co-author Illidge on the second part. Attention was drawn to the compact design attainable when "Sink and Float" was employed as a means of primary concentration. The teaching profession should welcome this concise correlation of data from such a renowned center of lead and zinc production. H. R. Hanley and C. R. Hay¬ward were much interested in the mechanics of charging, manufacture, and life of the retorts.

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

COMPARED with 1939, the year 1940 has seen no material change in the production of anthracite. Many factors seem to indicate a stabilized anthracite production of approximately 50 million tons per year. The present war has stimulated demand in the Cana¬dian and New England markets, which were formerly furnished with a portion of their needs from Great Britain and other European countries. Neither has there been any material change in the "bootleg coal" situation. This problem is more serious in the Southern anthracite field than in the Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton areas. Coal mine longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall mine ventilation system. Increases in the production rate due to higher capacity mining equipment tend to increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation with a minimal opportunity for assistance from additional control equipment (i.e., surface boreholes). Increases in panel length, in some mines approaching 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. Face ventilation can also be affected by communication with the methane-laden gob gas reservoir. Except in a two-entry system, belt air cannot be used to ventilate the face in the US, except in limited cases. This relatively recent requirement has further challenged the mining industry in maintaining adequate longwall face ventilation. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices, a face monitoring study was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a US mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam with some self-heating tendencies. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the face and produced a small portion of ventilation air in their production flow. Initial results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Increases in methane concentrations in the tailgate entry in the vicinity of the longwall face T-junction appeared to be produced primarily by gas flow from the gob, not from increased emissions from the face. Barometric pressure variations were substantial over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis, as is typical of many mining operations. Suggestions are forwarded for reducing longwall face methane concentrations.

"The use of classifying devices in grinding circuits dates back to the early 1900’s when classifiers were installed to close ball mills. The search for ways to further improve grinding circuits led to the use of hydrocyclones in place of mechanical classifiers in South Africa in the early 1950’s. Today Hydrocyclones are considered as the best classifying devices to close grinding circuits. After 50 years of development the hydrocyclone has changed significantly when compared to the designs of the early days, but the focus to circuit optimization must be expanded to an understanding of the integral system consisting of mill, cyclone feed pump and cyclone.The key to good cyclone circuit design and operation in primary grinding circuits will be discussed including individual cyclone design features such as cone angle or materials of construction, as well as orientation and manifold configuration.Cyclone performance issues as well as maintenance considerations will be detailed in an effort to achieve consistent cyclone operation with minimal coarse solids in the overflow. “The importance of constant cyclone feed conditions is unquestioned today. The challenge of Cyclone sizing is a large number of not fully known variables prior to startup. The most significant unknown variable is slurry viscosity. Because of this, engineers often specify a conservative cyclone system that produces a finer than required separation. However, this approach often leads to higher circulating loads and a higher overflow density in order to produce the required separation. The higher cyclone overflow density results in a less efficient cyclone separation. The average concentrator can pick up 2-4% finer overall grind by having a more aggressive cyclone operation.”"

Outbursts, the sudden and violent out- pouring of material into mine openings, is a ground control problem increasingly encountered in the United States as deeper seams are developed. Outbursts, caused by several mechanisms, are the result of the loading of ground support systems be- yond their designed capacity to failure, manifested in a violent release of stored energy. There are several types of outbursts typical to deep underground coal mines. - Outbursts of the coal face due to the presence of pressure abutments in close proximity to the face. These outbursts are usually accompanied by liberation of large amounts of methane. - Instantaneous convergence of the ribs and floor due to overloading and failure of ribs which lengthens the beam of floor strata sometimes resulting in a chain reaction failure of the mine floor. - violent failure of the confined core of a pillar due to rapid loading beyond the yield point of the pillar.

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

Shovels, trucks and repair bays for the trucks each play their role in the capacity of an open pit operation. It is therefore convenient to have a procedure for the capacity calculation which takes all 3 factors into consideration in a comprehensive manner. This can be done by means of a cycle model, earlier developed for the shovel-dumper circuits, when the repair facility with its number of repair bays is added as a superimposed service system, which the trucks visit at certain specified intervals. The calculation model transforms the mechanical availability of the trucks into their operational availability. The system&apos;s capacity in truckloads per shift and the trucks&apos; operational availability of certain combinations of shovels, trucks and repair bays are shown.

Geometallurgical characterization of iron ore which is a raw material for Iron making as in the case of charcoal blast furnaces operating in Brazil or for production of agglomerates such as iron ore sinter which serves as burden material for blast furnces of high productivity or pellets extensively used in the direct reduction processes all over the world in the iron and steel industry. Selection of proper raw material after due characterization should lead to an improvement of the productivity of the respective processes The usual classification of quality of iron ore is uniquely based on chemical analysis, granulometric and physical parameters. However not much emphasis has been given to the structural characteristics which also are important in the processes. Different typological categories of Brazilian iron ores have been used in the characterization . For instance, several kinds of hematite crystals like specularite, martite and microgranular hematite, etc with variable crystal sizes are found in the different ore types. They are also composed of different of fabrics and types of accessorial mineralogical constituents and have different porosities, pore diameters, etc which influence the cold and the hot agglomeration stages of the ore fines, and also chracteristics such as reducibility, decrepitation etc, important for assessment of quality of iron ores. . The first step for attaining a good characterization of ores is to know in detail about the structure of the deposit, shape of the body, types of iron ores and their distribution. This requires a geological-structural study and the mapping of the bodies using mineralogical criteria for typological classification of ores. followed by structural characterization of materials in stages of mining, comminution, screening and concentration processes. In this contribution a geometallurgical approach for quality control of Brazilian iron ores for sintering and pelletizing processes is highligted.
