A LACK of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys .and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investiga-tion an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100° C. are too small to be of practical importance.

It may at first sight appear somewhat presumptuous for the writer to attempt to discuss a subject in which he cannot pretend to possess any special scientific training; but a sufficient apology can surely be found in the fact that a very large percentage of the accidents from explosives occurring in metalliferous mines is traceable to the ignorance of the characteristics of these compounds by the miners who have to handle them, and to their deliberate disobedience of the rules laid down for their guidance by the manufacturers, the government regulations, or the special rules of the mines.The only method which promises any possibility of improvement upon these conditions is to substitute reason and understanding for the rule-of-thumb principle which says "you should do this" or "you should not do that." In the one case his own knowledge and intelligence enables the miner to avoid any dangerous practice in the other his inclination prompts him to do anything which will save time, provided he is not found out or at best trusting to his memory to tell him what is dangerous, without the reasoning which makes that memory easy.Another evil of rule-of-thumb knowledge is that, from its very nature, it prevents adaptability, and so we find that old miners, who learnt blasting in the days of black powder, cannot understand why high explosives do not require heavy tamping, or because copper bars are permitted in tamping powder they should not be used with other explosives...

Thermodynamic properties of Hf-0 alloys have been determined from 0 to 25 at. pct 0 between 1000" and 1200°K by equilibrating specimens with alkaline metal oxide-metal vapor combinations. Partial molar-free energies, enthalpies, and entropies of oxygen have been obtained and are conzpared with similar results for the Ti-0 and ZY-0 In continuation of a thermodynamic investigation of the Ti-O and Zr-O systems1 activities of oxygen and lattice parameters of Hf-0 alloys have been deter- system. The positional entropy in all three systems corresponds to an ideal random interstitial solution with one interstitial site per one metal atom. The lattice parameters of hafnium and Hf-O solid solutions have been determined in the range 0 to 20 at. pct O from measurements of Debye powder patterns. mined. All three metals dissolve large quantities of oxygen to form interstitial solid solutions. The phase diagram of the Hf-O system is shown in Fig. 1.' The maximum solubility of oxygen in the cph a phase is considerable (up to 25 at. pct O). The solubility in the high-temperature phase is much smaller. The only stable compound in the solid state is HfO2 which may exist with a certain oxygen deficiency. The low partial pressure of oxygen of Hf-0 alloys required the application of an indirect method. This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.

Copper electrowinning is a complex electrochemical process that involves the production of LME grade copper from copper rich electrolyte. The process involves the deposition of the copper ions onto the cathode from copper rich electrolyte with the production of oxygen bubbles at the anode. Acid mist is produced by these oxygen bubbles bursting at the electrolyte free surface. It is an undesired by-product of the Electrowinning process which unchecked could result in mist generation higher than the recommended time-weight-average exposure limit. Various approaches to alleviate the problem have been adopted by companies, all with varying degrees of success. All of these have been attempts to treat the symptom acid mist rather than the inherent problem, often proving expensive and, in some cases, ineffectual. In this paper, a new method was developed for acid mist quantification based on ‘total acid mist’ capture above the EW cell under well controlled conditions. With the use of sophisticated diagnostic analytical tools and measurement techniques it was possible to study all the operating variables including current density, flow rate, temperature, etc. independently and their effect on bubble size, bubble velocity, gas hold-up as well as acid mist generation and its droplet size. Results show that total acid mist capture increases with an increase in current density but remains more or less constant between 300–500 A m-2. Total acid mist also shows an increase with increasing electrolyte temperature. These findings are substantiated with the aid of bubble size and gas hold-up measurements with the transparent EW cell.

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

The attrition of activated carbon, and the loss of gold associated with it, is of significant economic importance to the operation of a CIP/CIL circuit The focus of this study was on activated carbon recovered from an elution circuit which was deemed too fine for reuse. Results of cyclosizer and laser particle size analysis identified that most of the carbon was contained in the larger size fraction suggesting formation by abrasion. Digestion and AAS analysis of the individual size fractions identified a disproportionate concentration of gold in the finer size fractions which was identified by scanning electron microscopy to be due to the presence of fine metallic gold formed as a result of the acid washing process. Attempts to strip the remaining gold using sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphide based solutions proved unsuccessful due to poor elution efficiencies and re adsorption of gold. Upgrading of the material by froth flotation was also investigated using various conventional flotation reagents which had some success in concentrating the free metallic gold, however, grade and/or recoveries were considered less than desirable. Greater success was ultimately found in the transfer of gold from the fine carbon material onto coarser virgin activated carbon using a caustic cyanide solution. Sodium sulphide, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride based solutions were also trialled but proved less successful owing to their inability to mobilise metallic gold or gold cyanide species. Repetition of the transfer process proved capable of stripping 97% of the gold contained on the carbon fines for abed volume ratio of 6:1.

As the amount of new fractured surfaces or "damaged rock layers" within roof rock increases, the stability of the rock mass decreases. While direct measurements of this phenomenon are not easily made, there is good circumstantial evidence to support this hypothesis. For example, it is common to observe increased cracks or fractures in the immediate mine roof rock before a roof fall. Likewise, roof drill holes placed in areas that later fail often reveal increased numbers and/or separations of fractures within the rock column through time. And finally, the frequency of microseismic activity, representative of rock fracturing, increases before a roof fall. For this study, more than 700 microseismic emissions were collected from two underground limestone mine roof fall areas in southwestern Pennsylvania. Microseismic events were located and magnitudes determined using the moment magnitude technique. Moment magnitude is based on the event seismic moment, which is a measure of the seismic deformation. The amount of new fracture surface length was calculated based on the stored strain energy within the rock prior to fracture. In the two case studies presented, a significant amount of microseismic activity was observed as much as two days before the first signs of failure in the roof fall areas. Additionally, results from this analysis reveal much about the behavior of strata prone to failure and allows for the construction of hazard maps based on microseismic emissions. The potential use of this technique as a means of anticipating roof falls is analyzed and discussed.

There are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely in use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a passible demand; nor does it include extra patterns rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns ere, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,—a heavy head, light web and Hanges, and a good angle to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there are thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other

Provide the mining industry with a method for determining the gas content of ore bodies and associated strata for use in mine planning, Approach Samples of various rock types are collected and tested to determine gas content in conjunction with sample size, the collection method (i.e. whether the sample was collected from a core sample or by hand) mine gas emission, and the geologic location from which the sample was taken, such as near a fault, outburst area, or other geologic anomaly. How It Works Two methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the gas contents of rock samples. The first method developed involved dissolving minerals to measure gas emission. This method, however, can only be used with soluble minerals. A second method, therefore, was developed for use with insoluble minerals. With this method, the sample is crushed in a ball mill. Although the dissolution method is faster and more accurate to use, the crushing method is also advantageous because its use can more closely approximate a mining situation; the sample is crushed as in mining and the amount of gas released relates to the amount of gas that would be released during a mining operation. The dissolution method is applied to soluble minerals, such as rock, salt, or trona, in a sealed chamber. Gases released during dissolution are collected for analysis by gas chromatography. One advantage in using the dissolution method is that the test apparatus is relatively inexpensive. In addition, test can be performed at any scale, from single crystal samples to a solution mining operation.

FIRE-DAMP is a mixture of methane with other inert gases or combustible gases. The inert gases in question are carbonic acid, water vapor, nitrogen, etc. The combustible gases are hydrogen, ethane, etc. The study of the properties of fire-damp, therefore, becomes a study of the properties of methane and the influence on its properties of the different gases we have mentioned. Characteristic Properties of Methane 1. Respirability.-Methane being a paraffin is characterized by its weak chemical affinities. From the physiological, point of view one could substitute it for nitrogen of the air at least momentarily, without experiencing any difficulty in breathing the mixture consisting of 21 per cent. 02 + 79 per cent. CH4. I .have tried this on myself, making the gas exhaled -from the lungs burn subsequently in a Bunsen burner.1 From the chemical point of view, this weak affinity permits the gas to be burned in certain circumstances with hydrogen and oxide of carbon in an oxygenated mixture, with the result that the last two gases achieve only a fractional combustion. This practice has been utilized with success in the methods of analysis which I have perfected and which I describe later in this paper. 2. Retardation of Flashing Point.-A characteristic property of methane is its retardation of flashing point, noted by Davy in 1816 and studied by Mallard and Le Chatelier in 1883.2 Taffanel and Le Floch have recently confirmed these results.3 Let us recall the nature of this retardation:

In addressing a short-term operational need for the relocation of a tailings storage facility reclaim pond, a mine has achieved a host of water management objectives. Through effective planning and adoption of a strategic æwhole of mine lifeÆ approach, the mine has achieved significant environmental, social and economic benefits. A review of all water management aspects across the site identified a host of other interrelated water issues and concerns which, if dealt with individually, would prove too costly for individual operational departments. When considered as a whole, however, the issues became opportunities and provided the stimulus for integration of the site water management system. The development of site water and solute balance models provided the tool by which a number of water management options/strategies could be evaluated. The conceptual design and costing of the proposed water infrastructure further facilitated the evaluation of the multiple benefits to be gained from each option. A business case could then be made to mine management for the preferred option. The recommended water management strategy finally recommended to the mine not only provided a tailings storage facility (TSF) reclaim pond, but also provided for:increased wastewater recovery from the TSF, the capture of all waste rock dump run-off, additional water harvesting from local creeks, increased wastewater reuse, improved environmental water management, infrastructure that could be used by the local community after mine closure, and overall cost savings. This paper illustrates how effective water management planning can provide both short-term economic and environmental benefits, as well as long-term social benefits.

The correct sampling of ores is a subject of far greater importance than is usually conceded to it. Of the little which has been published on this subject, the recent paper by Mr. Glenn, with the accompanying discussion by Dr. Raymond (Trans., xx., 155), is the latest and best, and well worthy the careful perusal of all interested in accurate sampling, whether by hand or by machine. It is doubtless true that thorough hand-sampling gives as good average results as can be obtained; but all hand-sampling is subject to the possible incompetency, carelessness, or dishonesty of the workmen employed. It is, moreover, tedious and expensive, requires large space, and usually entails considerable delay, both in unloading and in sampling. For these and other reasons, machine-sampling is now regarded with more favor than ever before. So-called machine-sampling may be accomplished in two radically different ways: 1. Part of the stream of material is taken for the whole time. 2. The whole stream of material is taken for part of the time. Under the first case the stream, as it issrles from the deliveryspout of the crusher, is cut continuously in any given proportion, such as one-tenth, one-fourth, or one-half, by some fixed apparatus, which, as it contains no moving parts, is strictly speaking not a machine at all, but may be termed an appliance. "A support system for large ground convergence conditions or burst-prone ground must contain holding elements (rockbolts, cable bolts, etc.) that are strong yet capable of sustaining large deformations, i.e., they must absorb as much energy as possible. Steel wire rope anchored in a borehole by a friction bolt provides these desired yield characteristics if the frictional anchorage is placed deep enough into the rockmass, i.e., in non-yielding rock or beyond the expected depth of rock ejected during a rockburst. Pull-out tests were conducted on wire ropes anchored by inflated Swellex bolts to assess the feasibility of this support concept. The test results demonstrate that a Swellex bolt generates a frictional anchorage that allows the wire rope to slide at high loads and to absorb significantly more energy than either a Swellex bolt alone, or a cement-grouted cable.The rope/friction bolt combination can be engineered to provide the desired energy absorption and allowable deformation by varying the installed lengths of the friction bolt and the rope. For yielding rope support, the contact length between the rope and Swellex bolt must be short enough to ensure that the rope can slip well before its tensile capacity is reached. A safe maximum overlap length is about one metre for the wire rope used in this testing. When used as support in the backs of drifts, a swaged button on the ropes end must be used to ultimately mobilize the full rope capacity thereby protecting against gravity-driven falls of ground."

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

The optimal geochemical parameters required to form ellringite in a lime-remediated site have been investigated with the use of thermodynamic modelling. The speciation of sulphate and 10 metals analyzed in samples of a mine tailing from northern Quebec was calculated with a computer model. The model also includes calcium, which would result from the addition of lime to the system. Two speciation calculations were done. The first one is a hypothetical speciation before the onset of precipitation and was used to devise the stability fields of minerals susceptible of forming in high pHs. The stability fields were determined by building activity ratio diagrams with sulphate, aluminum and calcium species concentrations for pHs ranging from 4 to 14. The investigation was carried out for a 25°C solution with an ionic strength less than 0.12. Thermodynamics predict that an optimal stability field for ettringite in the mine tailing samples containing 10-3 mol/L SO4-2,10-2 mol/L of AI(OH)4 requires at least 10-2mol/L of Ca+2 and a pH larger than 11.6. The sulphate contents of the mine tailing samples, however, limit the precipitation of ettringite and monosulphate could be an end-precipitate. The second speciation is in equilibrium with precipitates and provides information on the speciation of the residual metals. If ellringite could be precipitated as a stable form, it could serve as a sorptive agent for residual metals, and, due to its binding properties, consolidate tailings.

Already the KBS Project proposed copper as a suitable material for encapsulation of spent nuclear fuel. The basis for this choice was the thermodynamic stability of copper in water and the fact that deep granitic groundwaters in Sweden are oxygen free. With a limited supply of oxidants, a copper canister would have the potential for a very long service life. The research and development work aiming at encapsulating nuclear fuel entered a new phase in 1993, when SKB launched its Encapsulation Plant Project. Within this project, SKB has: ? designed a facility for encapsulation of nuclear fuel, ? laid down the design premises for a canister for disposal of nuclear fuel, ? tested and developed fabrication methods for copper canisters, ? evaluated the long term chemical and mechanical behavior of the canister, ? made preliminary plans for a factory for the production of copper canister, ? constructed a canister laboratory for full scale testing of the key operations in an encapsulation plant. The conclusions of this project were that a canister consisting of an outer layer (50 mm) of copper over an insert of cast nodular iron would provide sufficient corrosion protection and would have sufficient mechanical strength. This canister can be produced by several methods of which forming from rolled plates, hot extrusion, and "pierce and draw" have been tested at full scale. The canister will be sealed by electron beam welding in the encapsulation plant, and the integrity of the weld will be verified by ultrasonic testing and' high-energy radiography. The final development work in this area will be performed in the canister laboratory.

Injection of gases into slag-melt mixtures produces various zones as a result of bubble formation and disintegration within the melt. The extent of these zones depends on the type of reactor used. When compared with ferrous processes, non ferrous processes are character- ised by large bubbles formed adjacent to the tuyeres, low flowrates and shallow tuyere sub- mergence. These features can result in a greater proportion of reaction occurring above the bath, more refractory wear and tuyere blockage with more splashing. The large bubble zone adjacent to the tuyeres has been investigated using the tech- niques of physical modelling, mathematical modelling and plant trials. Large bubble form- ation in physical models was recorded using a high speed camera and a rapid response pressure transducer coupled to an oscilloscope and data recorder. It was found that the bubble volume (Vb) could be correlated at low flowrates using the single bubble model Vb = 1.378 Q6/5 g-3/5 Deviations from this correlation occurred with increasing gas jet momentum. Plant trials were carried out on a copper converter at Mount Isa Mines during five different charges. Pressure measurements were made through the tuyeres during the slag blow and commencement of the copper blow. The power spectrum density showed that the dominant pulse amplitude occurred at a frequency of approximately 3 pulses/sec. Plant data from this and other converters were correlated using the same relationship as for physical modelling. De- viations occurred due to the state of the re- fractory, bath composition or bath circulation effects.

THE literature dealing with the physical constants of nickel is so fragmentary and unrelated, that a synopsis presents unusual difficulties. It is only within the last few years that investigators have understood the importance of placing on record not only the determinations they have made but also the composition, physical treatment, and past history of the material investigated. For this reason much of the earlier literature is valueless. Determinations have been made of the same physical constants on samples differing widely in origin, composition, and treatment, and the results differ widely among themselves. In the first place nickel is almost as flexible a term as steel. Its physical properties are widely influenced by its composition and treatment. It absorbs large quantities of gases and is exceedingly difficult to prepare in a state of chemical purity comparable to gold, silver, or copper. It is vitally affected by thermal and mechanical treatment. Hence in the following pages the recorded literature, where quoted, must be accepted with a certain reserve and used, as far as possible, as a check on later observations, in which these important factors are noted. In every case where new determinations are given, an attempt has been made to record all available information concerning the composition and treatment of the material used so that the data may serve as steppingstones toward a wider knowledge of the properties of the metal.
