The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.

Automation techniques are used during the design stage of continuous miners to decrease the time required and ensure the accuracy of the design. This is followed by automated manufacturing processes to reduce manufacturing time and improve the quality and consistency of parts. Combined, the result is a more reliable machine that can provide ongoing production capability. With the use of automation to enhance operator effectiveness and monitor machine condition, the productivity of machines is also improved. Productivity of continuous miners doubled over a 10-year span (Fig. 1). Although this article focuses on the continuous miner, it should be recognized that production increases of the continuous miner would not be realized without increased capabilities throughout the rest of the mining system. There are several aspects of automation that have played a role in providing increased continuous miner productivity. Though some are considered indirect, they still had significant influence on the overall result. Basically, productivity increases are obtained by cutting, loading and transporting the coal at a maximum rate. In addition, these tasks must be consistent, with minimal downtime. Therefore, the miner had to improve in operational capability and reliability. Automation techniques used during machine design, manufacturing and operation have all played significant roles in achieving higher productivity.

This paper summarizes the results of a five-year project, which aimed at improving the current method to process the arsenic-bearing smelter dust of El Teniente. This project, which was started in 2001, was carried out jointly by JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) and CIMM (Centro de Investigación Minera y Metalurgica, Chile), and was financially supported by the Japanese and the Chilean governments. In the new process, the smelter dust is leached with sulfuric acid to dissolve arsenic, which is subsequently precipitated as crystalline ferric arsenate (scorodite) at ambient pressure by controlling the crystallization and crystal growing stage. As a result, a stable form of ferric arsenate is obtained, which passes the U.S. E.P.A. TCLP limit of 5 mg/L As. Copper and zinc are subsequently recovered from the arsenic-free solution. The copper product can be fed into the main copper production circuit at the Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery, whereas zinc is recovered as a marketable product. A demonstration plant was installed and operated at CODELCO's Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery. The basic and detailed engineering design was prepared by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd (MMS) on the basis of a joint study done by JOGMEC, CIMM and CODELCO's Las Ventanas Division.

This paper presents the experimental results of an ongoing investigation into various properties related to the performance and durability of concretes made using existing and new cement replacements. The process of cement and concrete production is investigated focusing on product performance and environmental performance. The overriding factor for the progression of a material will be product performance however; each material selected will have many intrinsic environmental benefits. The study combines Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with each cement replacement candidate using the most common replacement percentages, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 percent. A 35N/mm2 concrete is then prepared and analysed in the fresh and hardened state. In addition, a chemical and physical analysis of each replacement material has been performed and results compared to the control samples containing OPC only and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement. The results show that in their present form the replacements used in this research do not compare with the strengths achieved by the controls. The right balance of chemical composition and particle grading needs to be achieved to produce a realistic replacement material. The processes required to achieve this must strike a balance between monetary and environmental cost.

Wildcat drilling operations in Utah in 1937 added nothing of importance to the commercial oil and gas possibilities of the state, and such operations consisted largely of efforts to reach objectives in wells started in former years. The Standard Oil Company of California, jointly with the Continental Oil Co., completed a wildcat well in sec. 22, 23 S., 11 E., on the San Rafael swell in Emery County, which was abandoned in metamorphic rocks at 4900 ft.; it tested the Pennsylvanian and Mississippian sections and probably ended in Devonian or older rocks. The Utah Southern Oil Company's test of the Cisco structure in sec. 33, 22 S., 22 E., was abandoned at 6715 ft.; it may have been through the Pennsylvanian section at this depth. The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. continued the development of its Clay Basin gas field, and with the completion of two wells in 1937 added 35,571,000 cu. ft. initial daily gas capacity to its reserves. This company constructed 21 miles of 10-in. gas pipe line from the Clay Basin field to its South Baxter Basin terminal in Wyoming, and during the closing months of 1937 delivered 2,225,000,000 cu. ft. of gas through the Salt Lake trunk line.

We wish to congratulate the authors on a fine presentation of a difficult and interesting problem. We fully support the findings that liquid or even mushy center reduction has no place in the production of quality steels. We also agree with the findings, or implications, that internal bar quality is not made in the rolling stands, but in the caster. This is the main reason why Inland caster exclusively uses the submerged casting technique after a few months of familiarization with open casting. The metallurgical advantages of combining in-line reduction with a caster are actually indirect. The use of submerged casting and refining powder permits casting of fine grained aluminum killed steels without resorting to expensive grain refiners and cuts down or eliminates reoxidation during casting. Immersion of a snorkel into a small mold may lead to several operating difficulties. Hence, the presence of in-line reduction enables the section to be cast into a large mold, at high output rates, while obtaining some product size flexibility. The capital and operating costs of a caster-- in-line mill are lower than those of the traditional installation with a separate reheating furnace and billet mill. Admittedly, in-line reduction represents an additional challenge to the steelmaker, maintenance man, and metallurgist.

In some rural regions of Peru, artisanal gold mining is currently an essential activity as it provides an important source of income. In the Huanca region (Ayacucho Department) gold deposits are not attractive for mining companies due to their reduced size, but they have enough interest for artisanal mining because of the ease and low cost of mining operations. Artisanal gold mining represents an important damage for the environment, because operations related to amalgamation processes using Hg result in special environmental problems besides the typical ones commonly associated to all mining activities. A preliminary sampling has been made in soils, materials from tailing ponds and surface water of the Acarí River, at the site of the Huanca village, according to networks specially designed for the particular conditions of the area. Studies accomplished revealed high mercury concentrations in soils and tailings. Chemical analyses of soils directly collected in the area of the active or abandoned ?quimbaletes? show mercury concentrations ranging from 15.3 mg?kg-1 to 44.2 mg.kg-1. Mercury concentrations in soils decrease as a function of distance from the before mentioned sources. Water quality of the Acarí River that flows through the area does not present important changes as a consequence of the mining and processing operations.

Recent events in The Peoples Republic of China indicate that a major effort is underway to increase trade with the western world. Gold production contributes to China's ability to participate in international trade. Consequently, the Chinese government places a high priority on increasing gold production. Many of the operating gold mines in China contain refractory ores that to date have not been efficiently treated. Figure 1 illustrates the description and location of a few of China's major gold mines. China recognizes that the technology necessary to economically treat this ore has been developed in the United States and other western countries. The country has therefore begun to seek assistance in evaluating several potential projects. Organizational structure Gold mining and processing in China is directed by the China National Gold Corp. (CNGC), headquartered in Beijing. The agency has a director in each province who is responsible for exploration, mining and processing. CNGC uses the services of two engineering organizations for metallurgical testing, process development and design engineering for their projects. The largest engineering organization is the Central Engineering and Research Institute for Non-Ferrous Metallurgical Industries (ENFI), also located in Beijing. The second engineering organization is the Changchun Gold Design Institute (CGDI), located in Changchun Jilin province.

Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. The following experimental hypothesis was to be tested: Null Hypothesis: the coefficients a = 0 J Alternate Hypothesis: One or more of the coefficients a 0 J Correlation and Regression To establish the alternate hypothesis and to test how well the proposed model fits the data, the conventional statistical techniques of correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Additionally, factor analysis was employed to investigate the dependency relationships in the data. Correlation and linear regression are well established statistical procedures in science and engineering. References on these procedures include Spiegel (1961), Anderson (1963), and Draper and Smith (1966). A simple example is stated here. If N observations are made of two variables, x and y, and it is desired to test this data to see if a linear relationship exists, then a model of the form: Y = a0 + a 1 x A-2 is proposed. "The majority of chromium electroplating operations employ Cr(VI)-based baths. During these processes, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III). Besides Cr(III) other undesirable impurities are present such as iron, copper and nickel. The build-up of the impurities limits the lifetime of the plating solutions. Since the disposal of spent chromic acid baths is expensive and can cause significant environmental degradation, there is increasing interest in finding ways to regenerate waste chromium liquors.In this work, an electrolytic cell separated by microporous ceramic diaphragms was used to regenerate chromium plating solutions. INTRODUCTIONDuring the past few years there has been considerable interest in developing the so-called direct reduction processes for treating iron oxides. The various methods proposed were recently reviewed by Scortecci and Palazzi (1960).In particular the application of fluidized bed techniques received considerable attention and, on first examination, this seems to be the ideal method 'of dealing with fine iron oxides. Several difficulties (e.g. product agglomeration) require the method to be investigated further before its potentialities can be fully assessed.PROPOSED FLUIDIZED BED REDUCTION PROCESSESBrassert and De Jahn (1951) were among the earliest to suggest the use of fluidized beds for the reduction of iron ore to metallic iron. Buildings with large height-to-width ratios require foundations with significant uplift resistance. This paper presents a case study of the permanent rock tiedowns installed for One Manhattan West, a sixty-seven-story office building in midtown Manhattan. Site access and schedule dictated the size of the equipment for installing the tiedowns would be limited to drilling a 16 inch (406 mm) diameter hole. A three bar configuration of 3 inch (76 mm) diameter high strength threaded bars was chosen to develop an allowable capacity of 923 tons (4060 kN) per tiedown. Although the quality of the rock at the site was generally high, a challenging geologic condition emerged during the installation of one of the tiedowns requiring a creative installation procedure. Although the three bar configuration performed relatively well there are challenges with loading and testing this bar arrangement. Unlike single bar tiedowns that are typically tested with a high success rate, testing of a multiple bar system can result in some unsatisfactory results. This may be attributed to the installation challenges, difficulty loading each bar uniformly and/or the method of monitoring the test. Understanding the complexities is necessary to improve the testing results and achieve similar reliabilities of single bar systems.

Denison Mines Limited, Canada's largest uranium producer located in Northern Ontario recently embarked upon an extensive development program that would allow them to substantially increase production and also meet the more stringent air quality standards established by the ministry of Natural Resources. To proceed with this program it was essential that the fresh air supply be greatly increased to the underground workings. A major portion of the mining area is located under Quirke Lake on the north limb of a syncline termed the Quirke Lake trough. The Denison engineers determined the most practical size and location for a proposed new fresh air shaft, eventually deciding to drive a 25 foot diameter shaft, 490 square feet in section for 1,800 feet long vertically. The shaft collar would be located on Roman Island, an island in Quirke Lake. A test hole was drilled from Roman Island to determine the ground through which the ventilation shaft would pass. This drill hole confirmed the location of the Quirke Lake over-thrust fault, a highly fractured water bearing zone 165 feet thick, approximately 800 feet below surface. Plans were made by Denison Mines Limited to seal and consolidate this ground when it was encountered by the shaft.

Acid rain legislation included in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 caused a great deal of uncertainty regarding the price, source and production quantities of coal supplied to the eastern coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward. South American coals move into the northern markets. States are proposing legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries. Some utilities question the long-term availability of eastern compliance coal. Major coal producers must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place. Several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves, while others have invested in technology to compete as a low-cost producer. Legislation "Acid rain." This is a topic that was debated within the scientific, environmental and industrial communities for years. Those discussions resulted in a large outlay for the federal National Acid Precipitation Assessment Project (NAPAP), which was then ignored. Acid rain then became the subject of a "60 Minutes" broadcast that debunked the acid rain theory, supporting the NAPAP study conclusions. In the final outcome, however, acid rain was the driver for the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

Mineral Industries education as an entity, again and again has sought recognition, always to be turned aside or ignored.1 The incident mentioned in Lost Chapter was only the first of a series of disappointments. The Land-Grant Act is camouflaged here and there in the name of progressive education. A new interpretation may be in the best interests of society in so far as the goose is not killed that lays the golden egg. The primary objective of the act is still "agriculture and mechanic arts" but mechanic arts is not alone mechanical arts or engineering. Mechanic arts was used in a broad sense as a symbol of creative effort in locating and winning the fundamentals of existence - plants, animals, and minerals - from Mother Earth, their primary processing and treatment into foodstuffs and raw materials of industry, their manufacture into useful articles of commerce, and, last, their distribution and utilization. Significantly the great agricultural industry is now at least half mechanic arts. The Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities has neglected the mineral kingdom shamefully. The Association embraces Divisions of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics, and Veterinary Medicine but has no division relating to the mineral industries.

THE Jones Mine (or Johannes Mine, as it was originally called, from a former proprietor), situated near Springfield, in the township of Caernarvon, Berks County, Pennsylvania, has long been known as a large deposit of magnetic iron ore, associated with more or less copper pyrites, and with malachite and chrysocolla. It occurs in a belt of soft schistose rocks which rest upon the Laurentian gneiss of the Welsh Mountain, and to the northward are soon concealed by the unconformably overlying Mesozoic sandstone of the region. These metalliferous strata belong to the Primal slates of Rodgers, which, in many other localities in this region, include similar deposits of iron ores associated with more or less copper, and often accompanied by chloritic and argillaceous schists, and, more rarely, by serpentine and small lenticular masses of crystalline limestone. To this same horizon belong the iron ores of Boyertown, Fritz's Island, and Roudenbusch, near Reading, Wheatfield, Cornwall, and Dillsburg (all of which are found along the northern border of the Mesozoic belt of * By the kind permission of Dr. F. Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

In many experiments involving electropolishing such as electropolishing during deformation and electrothinning of deformed metals for electron microscopy, it is usually assumed that the specimen temperature is the same as the temperature of the polishing bath. In order to test this assumption, the interior temperature of aluminum single and polycrystals was measured while they were being electropolished. Specimens were 1/4 by 1/4 by 6 in. and were of 99.99 pct purity. A small hole 1 in. deep was drilled axially at one end of the specimen so that a copper-constantan thermocouple could be inserted. The electropolishing solution was 4 parts methanol (reagent grade) and 1 part perchloric acid (70 pct). The electropolishing was performed using an apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The electropolishing solution was stirred by a motor-driven stirrer and was cooled to —5°C with a mixture of methanol and dry ice. Electrolyte temperature was measured and remained at -5°C during the electropolishing. Current density of 0.3 amp per sq. cm was used. When the current was turned on, after about a 5-sec delay, the temperature began to rise rapidly until it reached 65°C. DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in many mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment.
