It is self-evident that economic pressure demands that today?s mines stay ahead and stay competitive. The challenge, however, isto find fresh approaches to the pursuit of efficiency and operational effectiveness. Rather than focusing on individual activities in isolation, a process that can lead to poor investment decisions affecting other critical areas of operation, a key concept is optimization of the whole value-adding process of mining. This concept is often called ?mine to mill?. Whereas it is never easy to establish optimal conditions across a whole mining operation, the quality and consistency of the blasted rock strongly affects all operations. In many instances an inability to control rock breaking has been unchallenged, leading to significant investment in time and money to manage the consequences of poor and/or inconsistent rock breaking. This paper discusses how electronic initiation systems can play a major role in optimizing the whole mining operation. Electronically programmed detonators provide not only the ability to tightly control a key parameter, namely timing, but also the opportunity to extract blast data for a continuous improvement process. The ability to alter predictably, using feedback from the downstream processes, blasting variables such as fragmentation, throw, wall stability, and vibration, is a huge advantage. The current understanding of the effect of timing, accuracy, and scatter on rock fragmentation is reviewed and offers reasons why there is significant progress in controlling blast results. Two case studies are examined, which demonstrate the benefits of the technology on the economics of the operations under review.

SUMMARY A detailed analysis of nickel, copper, and cobalt recovery from manganese nodules shows simple rates of return of 9-15% in 1985. A sulfur dioxide roast process yields a slightly better return than an ammonia leach technique. Nodule tonnage predictions tend to be over-optimistic and more conservative forecasts show that market penetrations are only significant for cobalt and manganese. However, cobalt prices are unlikely to fall to the level of nickel. Between now and 1985, cobalt is expected to be in balanced to tight availability. INTRODUCTION Deep-ocean manganese nodules are one- to two-inch concretions which cover 2040% of large areas of the ocean bottom. Commercial targets far these black, potato-like nodules are located in the North Pacific at water depths of 5,000-6,000 m. in a belt roughly midway between Hawaii and Mexico. However, good grade nodules are not solely limited to this belt as areas southwest and northwest of Hawaii, as well as in the Indian Ocean, contain concentrations of acceptable grade manganese nodules. Some 90% of the nodules are found half-buried on the deep ocean bottom. A siliceous-ooze host soil combined with low sedimentation rates, certain ocean currents, and possible geo- thermal effects are favorable factors far nodule formation. Mega projects present unique challenges with regard to estimating costs. With such projects, which may span decades, these challenges often begin as soon as a project is conceived. The importance of having a sound, resource based estimate avail-able early in the process cannot be overstated because it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. For the final phase of providing an updated cost estimate, often while bidding by contractors is underway, the Engineer?s Estimate (EE) must incorporate present market conditions; account for possible volatile material price swings; be based on actual labor and fringe costs; rely on meaningful productivity rates; and accommodate any recent technology advances while identifying and allowing for risk factors. This paper explains the benefits associated with consultants adopting a contractor?s estimating approach when preparing the Engineer?s Estimate on mega projects like the various tunneling projects in New York City.

As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. After a year-long study comparing existing crafts and techniques for ocean exploration with the future needs of oceanologists, the University of Pennsylvania's ocean engineering research team has come up with a system proposal for prolonged deep-sea exploration. Given the assumption that it will be necessary to re-explore our oceans every 25 years or so, engineers from the University's Towne School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering believe the best sys- tem for future ocean exploration would consist of a stable, manned surface ship operating and controlling two types of vehicles-an unmanned untethered craft for broad search missions, and an unmanned, tethered vehicle for detailed work.

There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.

This chapter looks at the development and use of the operating budget. This is management's plan of action in the short term, usually one year. The operating budget includes all expensed production costs (i.e., all costs reported as cost of goods sold) but does not include expenditures on capital equipment, which are usually justified using discounted cash flow techniques.

Adaptive re-use of existing structures in urban environments has become very common due to lack of available space in our cities and requirements for increased structural capacity. Often, it involves retrofitting existing foundations to support increased loading. In such cases, Engineers face the need to review existing deep or shallow foundations for their true load carrying capacities in order to determine the required magnitude of retrofit work, if any. To accomplish this, the engineer must track down and cull through the existing construction documentation to determine what was actually constructed, complete an investigation to confirm these conclusions, possibly sample the foundation elements for strength properties, and on occasions complete non destructive or full scale load testing of indicator elements. This paper describes the typical procedure followed by the authors for design of retrofit schemes for existing buildings in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Three case histories are presented that illustrate various issues encountered during design.

The combined 79th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 67th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 11 and 12, 2006, in Duluth, MN. About 300 mining professionals attended, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s theme was “Success in the New World of Mining.” The SME Minnesota Section meeting included a keynote session, a special projects update, a general managers update and technical paper presentations. The University of Minnesota Mining Symposium program featured a panel discussion on Minnesota’s relationship with China. The combined meeting included a trade-show consisting of 64 booth spaces. Tradeshow demand exceeded expectations, and an additional 10 booth spaces were added in the registration lobby. Also included were an SME short course on pump basics and social events.

Drilling operations are a vital component of surface mining, directly influencing productivity, safety, and cost efficiency. This paper explores a multi-faceted approach to drill optimization, focusing on minimizing delays, and enhancing operational effectiveness. Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

Catalytic Extraction Processing (CEP), a technology commercialized by Molten Metal Technology, Inc., a US.-based company, can convert industrial, household, and government wastes into commercial resources. CEP is an innovative elemental recycling technology that uses a molten metal bath to completely dissociate hazardous or toxic components of a feed and convert them to valuable products. The catalytic action of the molten metal bath converts the feed to its elemental constituents and the reducing atmosphere prevents the formation of any dangerous byproducts (NOx, SOx, dioxins, furans, etc.). Selective reactant addition allows engineering of valuable products from otherwise unexploited resources. Synthesis gas is generated from hydrocarbon feeds, ferro-alloys from metallic wastes, and ceramics from select inorganic species. Commercial-scale processing of multiple wastes and waste surrogates has been carried out at a destruction and removal efficiency exceeding 99.9999 wt.%, validating theoretical predictions. Unlike conventional hazardous waste treatment technologies, CEP offers resource recovery, minimal byproduct generation, and the potential for closed-loop recycling.

Mercury is sometimes present in non-ferrous ores including gold, zinc, copper and lead. The selection and use of appropriate mercury abatement technology is critical for preventing its release to the environment during ore processing and to protect workers from mercury exposure. This paper presents a general decision-making process for mercury abatement technology selection for major emission sources in the gold industry. Mercury abatement can be accomplished through making process changes and/or by adding a process step to an existing system (i.e. "end-of-pipe control"). Advantages and limitations of the technologies along with waste / by-product management options are discussed through case studies of current operating mercury abatement systems.

The Port Kembla Copper (PKC) copper smelting facilities were commissioned during 2000. Numerous difficulties were encountered during the commissioning such as multiple reactor tuyere line failures, absorbing acid tower refractory collapse, and Noranda Reactor and Mitsubishi Converter process control problems. These problems are described along with the actions taken to overcome them. Process development is described particularly for the Mitsubishi Converter and Acid Plant.

The options that are open to engineers for cooling mines are limited and are primarily dependent upon the thermophysical properties of coolants. These properties are carefully analysed in the context of cooling mines and a comparison is drawn among Ammonia (R717), Monochlorodifluoromethane' (R22), Dichlorodifluoromethane (R12) and Water (R718). From this comparison the extent of Ammonia's superiority as refrigerant is Evident.

An overview of methods of manufacture is presented, as well as the results of laboratory experiments on the making of stainless clad steels. , It is concluded that stainless clad steel can be made in South Africa with existing rolling equipment, and that good bonding between the two materials depends on clean mating surfaces, proper edge welding, and a minimum reduction of 25 per cent at a rolling temperature of 120O"C. In practice, a minimum reduction of 70 per cent at 1100cC is recommended. : Suggested applications for clad steel include parts and equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, marine engineering, and mining industries, for the building sector, and for household appliances.
