This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during actual mining operations. The six explosives included two semigelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives and an ammonium nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and the toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped to the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/lbm): NO, 0.010-0.035; NO2, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; S02, 0.00-0.05; and CO2, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

Bio-hydrometallurgy technology was applied for the extraction of copper from the raw ores of Chambishi Mine in Zambia. A copper extraction of 93.29% was obtained for small scale column bioleaching within 63 days, while a copper extraction of 89.05% was achieved for large scale column bioleaching in 90 days, thus confirming the amenability of the raw ores for effective extraction via bioleaching. The bacteria were cultured in a 6-stage enlarge cultivation. The bacterial cultures with cell concentration of more than 1×108 cells/mL were added into a spray pond of sulfuric acid to be applied in the dump leaching, and a copper extraction of about 50% was achieved within 2 months. The production report revealed that the copper extraction increased by approximate 20%, and the acid consumption was reduced to around 35% as a consequence of adding the bacteria. The industrial demonstration of the bio-hydrometallurgy technique is now well established in Zambia, and further applications of bio-hydrometallurgy in both Zambia and Congo are currently in progress.

The demand for aluminum for military use during World War II called for an expansion of aluminum production in the United States A large part of the bauxite (the normal ore of aluminum) consumed in this county comes from Netherlands Guiana, South America. During the war, enemy activities were at times a serious threat to the flow of bauxite to the United States. The need for aluminum. stimulated the investigation of domestic deposits of bauxite and emphasized the wisdom of studying other aluminous materials, such as high-alumina and diaspore clays, to determine their possible use as aluminum ores. The occurrence in Pennsylvania of high-alumina flint clays and nodular diaspore clays has been known for many years. Several companies are mining these high-alumina, low-iron (less than 3 percent Fe2O3) clays and using them for the manufacture of refractory brick. Most of the production has come from Clearfield County, but clay deposits arc known also in Cambria, Centre, Clarion, Clinton, Indiana, Jefferson, Somerset, and Westmoreland, Counties.

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The case history, which is the subject of this paper, involves the expansion of a lime plant in Texas. The major new production unit is to be a 545.45 tonne per day coal fired rotary kiln. Auxiliary facilities include additional quarry haulage equipment, modifications to the crushing plant, a hydrator, storage facilities, and a loading system. The existing plant consists of a high calcium limestone quarry, two coal fired rotary and 10 gas fired shaft kilns, nth crushing, screening, stockpiling, hydrating, storing and loading facilities. The proposed modification would increase quarry volume from 545,000 tonnes per year to 805,000 tonnes per year. The plan also includes the addition of dolomitic lime to the product line which requires the purchase and handling of 186,000 tonnes of screened, washed dolomite yearly. A decision to undertake such an expansion was previously a simple and straight forward process. Such a decision now faces a major and complicating obstacle which can delay the project, raise the expected cost, or prevent it entirely.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. THE World. Engineering Congress closed as it opened, with a brilliant and dignified ceremony. On Oct. 29, 1929, there were hearty speeches of welcome and of hope for the successful issue of this international gathering; on Nov. 7, the farewells were even more heartfelt expressions, and anticipation gave place to, realization. H. I. H. Prince Yasuhito of Chichibu, who had graciously opened the Congress; was unavoidably absent at the closing ceremony, being on duty with his command at the Army maneuvers, so that the principal speech was made by the President of the Congress, Baron Furuichi. The outstanding statistics of the meetings were: an over-all attendance, delegates and members, of 800 from overseas and 2800 Japanese 83 sectional meetings, all. meetings having practically capacity attendance, this being especially true of Section 11, mining and metal¬lurgy, where standing room only was commonly the rule; and 780 papers were presented, in full or in abstract or by title. H. I. H. Prince Chichibu attended each section on Oct. 31. The large attendance of Japanese students was notable at most sections.

MATTERS pertaining to mine ventilation were, taken up at the annual meeting Wednesday morning with E. A. Holbrook in the chair. In the absence' of its author, G. E. McElroy, the first paper, entitled "Economic Size. of Metal Mine %Airways," was read by title by the chairman. The second paper, "Intermittent Mine Ventilation," by Oscar A. Glaeser, was 'abstracted by Dan Harrington. It related to metal-mining practice, being inapplicable to coal mining, of course. B. F. Tillson asked how the ,quantity of air was measured and con- trolled in the different splits and Mr. Harrington stated that an anemometer presumably was used and that split- ting was controlled by adjusting the steel doors to the desired position by means of screws. George 'S. Rice asked if the fan were underground, and Mr. Harrington replied that it was. Although he had at, one time recommended that it be placed' on the surface, certain factors led the management to keep it underground, a. location that has several advantages in this particular case.

Prof. Henry M Howe, New York: It is extremely probable that this efflorescence of silica is due to the liquation either of silicon or of a silicide, and the subsequent oxidation of the silicon to silica. As Mr. Fackenthal says, it is very hard to see why silicon should liquate from an iron containing so little silicon, and it seems more probable that some silicide of some volatile element has liquated, and has dissociated on reaching the air, and that the volatile element has volatilized, leaving the silicon to oxidize to silica. The volatile elements present which might thus liquate in combination with the silicon are sulphur, zinc, and lead. It is hard to see why sulphide of silicon should have liquated from an iron containing so little of either sulphur or silicon. At first, one naturally thinks that either the zinc or the lead present in this furnace might have liquated as silicide. It is true that they are both volatile at the temperature within the furnace, but then the vapor-tension* of each of them within

"The cost efficiency and high reliability of semi-mobile or combined in-pit crushing-conveying (IPCC) and truck systems, compared to conventional truck-shovel systems alone, make them more attractive for use in modern mining operations. Semi-mobile systems, which are the most common systems in open-pit mining, combine the advantages of both systems such that fewer trucks are required, operating costs are lowered, and the operation is environmentally sound. One major aspect of utilizing this system is determining the location of the in-pit crusher and the timing of relocations. Facility location models are rarely used in the mining sector, but these models may be used for solving the in-pit crusher location problem. To this end, the main parameters affecting the IPCC location in open pit mines are reviewed and examples given of how they are applied to a dynamic location-relocation problem. Subsequently, the model is implemented for Sungun copper mine in Iran and the number and the exact time of relocations of the IPCC units determined. IntroductionNowadays, compared to the last century, metal prices are more volatile, average and cut-off grades have decreased, and stripping ratios increased. From a mining engineering point of view, many ore deposits with simple access and low capital and operating costs have been exhausted. The remaining deposits are located at depth, with no easy access, which requires high initial capital costs (Osanloo, 2012). Mining at great depths and high tonnages is possible only through open pit mining. Today, more than 80% of open pit mines in the world use a shovel-truck system for loading-hauling operations (Osanloo, 2010).With increasing depth, haulage distances increase and the number of loads per truck decreases. As a result, fuel, tyre, and depreciation costs per ton increase. Owing to these factors, open pit mining at great depth (300 to 1000 m) using shovel-truck systems faces some technical and economic problems. In-pit crushing-conveying (IPCC) systems have been known in the mining industry for many decades. The idea was introduced in 1956 in Germany. Today, the cost efficiency and high reliability of IPCC make it more appealing than conventional shovel-truck operation, especially in longer life projects with lengthy transportation distances and high production rates (Koehler, 2003). Since 1956, different aspects of this system have been reviewed by many researchers. Barua and Lanergan (1985) developed a computer program that compares the tonnage aspects of various conveyor layouts. They believed that to maximize the economic benefit of lower haulage costs associated with in-pit conveying, one must first minimize the cost of the flatter slope, which is expressed in terms of additional stripping or tied-up ore. Dos Santos and Stanisic (1987) evaluated the design of a high-angle conveyor at the Majdanpek copper mine. Then, Sturgul (1987) applied GPSS (general purpose simulation system) to find the best location of an in-pit crusher."

The variability and uncertainty of mineralisation, coupled with subsequent uncertainty in mining and processing, is often paid scant regard or overlooked during the evaluation of mining projects. In many instances, when the project transitions to the operational phase, the reality of feed or product variability and the consequences of unquantified uncertainties throughout the value chain become obvious. The outcome is the familiar picture of frequent ramp-up underperformance and failure to deliver on planned targets and objectives.Both mine and exploration geologists are expected to generate mineral deposit models that are based on an integration of diverse sources of data. These multifaceted deposit models already play a pivotal role in the design, development and optimisation of mining project value, and the trend to a fully digitally engineered future means that this importance is increasing. It is therefore vitally important that tools be made available to the geologist (as well as mining engineers and metallurgists) that enable them to characterise and assess variability and uncertainty via appropriate deposit models and thus articulate their impact on potential project configurations and decisions. Scenario-based project evaluation (SBPE) provides a framework for full and proper analysis of the downstream impacts of inherent deposit variability and uncertainty on project performance.SBPE has been developed by the authors over several years and aims to propagate geological uncertainty and variability through the mining value chain. The outcomes of SBPE can be tested against future external scenarios capturing financial, economic and socio-political factors that also drive project performance. Stochastic representations of the orebody (via conditional simulation (see Chilès and Delfiner, 1999)) that explicitly incorporate variability and represent uncertainty are propagated through the value chain on a block-by-block basis (ie on a much more granular basis than traditional project evaluation approaches).Conventionally, metallurgical processes are modelled with deterministic equations (eg regression models) based on limited data. The SBPE approach allows for the modelling of process performance uncertainty using geometallurgical sampling fully. Multiple outcomes of SBPE are passed through financial modelling, which can also incorporate stochastic components, thus allowing full quantification of the risks and opportunities of a set of project alternatives. The value of the SBPE system is that once a base case has been established, multiple engineered alternatives coupled with external scenarios are easily evaluated and compared in terms of incremental value.A new case study of SBPE is presented that shows how, by analysis of the various aspects of variability and uncertainty, project managers are able to focus on the areas that have the greatest ability to reduce risk and/or add significant value. "Coal and gas outburst is an extremely complex dynamic disaster in coal mine production process which will damage casualties, equipment facilities and disorder the ventilation system by suddenly ejecting a great amount of coal and gas into roadway or working face. This paper analyzed the interaction among the three essential elements of coal and gas outburst dynamic system. A stress-seepage-damage coupling model was established which can be used to simulate the evolution of the dynamical system, and then the size scale of coal and gas outburst dynamical system was investigated. Results show that the dynamical system is consisted of three essential elements, coal-gas medium (material basis), geology dynamic environment (internal motivation) and mining disturbance (external motivation). On the case of C13 coal seam in Panyi mine, the dynamical system exists in the range of 8-12 m in front of advancing face. The size scale will be larger where there are large geologic structures. This research plays an important guiding role for developing measures of coal and gas outburst prediction and prevention. INTRODUCTIONCoal and gas outbursts are a complicated mine gas dynamic phenomenon that pose a serious threat to coal mine safety production. Since the first recorded coal and gas outburst occurring in Isaac coal mine of the Lule coal field in 1843, more than 40,000 outbursts have occurred in the world. China ranks first in outburst frequency and intensity. In recent 20 years, China on average increases 37 pairs of coal mines and more than 280 times outburst accidents every year (Yan, 2013). The coal and gas outburst occurred on Oct 20, 2004 in Daping Coal Mine, Zhengzhou Coal Group, caused serious gas explosions and ejected 1,894 tons of coal into the face, causing 148 fatalities. In recent years, despite implementation of numerous control measures, coal and gas outburst still occur frequently ash mining depth and mining intensity increase. The outburst mechanisms can be summarized in the following four aspects: the gas leading role hypothesis, the geostress leading role hypothesis, the chemical effect hypothesis, and combination hypothesis. The last hypothesis has won the acceptance of most scholars who consider that an outburst is the result of combined effect of stress, gas and coal (Yu, 1992).Numerous experimental measurements and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the permeability and damage development process in coal seam. Sobczyk, et al (2011) carried out a laboratory research of the influence of sorption processes on gas stresses leading to coal and gas outbursts. Wang, et al (2013, 2015) conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the rapid decompression and desorption induced energetic failure in coal using a shock tube apparatus. Xu, et al (2006) developed a coupled gas flow and solid deformation numerical model and applied to simulate the coal and gas outbursts in underground coal mines using RFPA2D-Gasflow. An, et al (2013) and Xue (2014) analyzed major parameters and the effect of gas desorption on outburst initiation and established a model of gas migration and mechanical processes during excavation."

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

Increase the productivity of domestic mining operations by improving the performance of rock drilling systems. Approach Investigate the use of chemical solutions at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and have found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the rock surface. Laboratory drilling studies using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits on rock types such as quartzite, granite, taconite, and marble. Cationic compounds were used as the surface charge neutralizing additives during these tests. The drilling studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition. Bureau researchers made a breakthrough when they found that polyethylene oxide, although a nonionic polymer, was able to maintain the ZSC condition over a wide range of concentrations. Success using polyethylene oxide as the drilling fluid additive during subsequent laboratory tests prompted testing under field conditions.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

"Mechanical behavior of rock joints is often the key factor governing the response of complex structures constructed in fractured rock masses such as underground openings or of objects assembling various stones blocks such as historical building walls or damaged marble statues. This paper aims at developing a theoretical model to describe the behavior of fresh joints based on the description of their morphology. The main idea of the model is to establish a link between the effective contact surface of joints and the frictional coefficient. Beginning from a chosen level of joint surface description where a joint is considered as “smooth”, the model describes the added friction with respect to the increase of the contact surface of the joints and the distribution of stress in these contacts. The model developed initially for asperities with regular geometry is firstly compared with existing models and then applied on fresh artificial joints. For that, healthy artificial joints have been characterised using in one hand classical CNL shearing tests and in another hand the morphology of joints. The joints surfaces are digitized before testing using a high resolution laser scanner (Konica Minelota Vivid 910) allowing to obtain a precision up to 10µm. From these scanned surfaces the morphology of joints is characterised on the profiles running in the direction of shearing and a mean value of friction is calculated using the developed model. This calculated value is then compared with that obtained from CNL shearing test and a good approximation is notedINTRODUCTIONThe role of the mechanical behavior of rock joints on the overall response of fractured rock masses is well established in many fields of engineering activity going from the stability of underground constructions (Souley M, Hoxha D, Homand F 1999), rock slope stability (Einstein H.H. Veneziano D., Baecher GB., O’Reilly K.J, 1983, Jaeger 1971), various rehabilitation of masonry construction, damaged stone artworks restoration (Michel L., Do D.P, Coignard B, Hoxha, 2014) and so on. In the same time the characterisation of the behavior of joints and their modeling is nowadays a dynamic field of research or/and investigations and many alternative approaches have been proposed (Barton, N.R. and Choubey, V. 1977, Tatone, S.A. Bryan, Grasselli Giovanni 2010, William C E. 2007). While empirical relations of shear strength with various parameters of the joint morphology are the most used in practice because of their simplicity (Barton. and Choubey, 1977, Barton 1973, Bandis S., Lumsden A. C. and Barton N. R. 1983) many other models of joint strength are developed based on mechanistic considerations (Haberfield CM, Johnston IW. 1994), multiscale approaches (Yang Z.Y., Di C.C., Yen K.C. 2001, Fardin N., O. Stephansson, Lanru Jing 2001) or micromechanical ones (A. Serrano, C. Olalla, R.A. Galindo 2014) to mention just a few of research trends on rock joints modeling."

"The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

"Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as operating mines move into areas of more complex ores. The processing therefore needs better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores for better planning before issues arise. While a number of instrumental mineral characterisation methods are available, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is widely recognised as perhaps the best technique for the identification and quantification of minerals, particularly clays. When an appropriate sequential and systematic sample preparation and treatment protocol is employed with instrumental XRD analysis individual clays can be uniquely identified, and the proportions of interstratified clays can also be quantified. The effect of sample preparation on the XRD analysis and identification of clays was investigated in this study. The results showed that sample preparation protocol is indeed critical to accurately analysis and characterisation of clays. For example, both dry grinding and micronizing affected the degree of crystallinity of kaolinite leading to the formation of reactive surfaces or changes in the physicochemical behavior. It was also found that the apparent degree of preferred orientation in platy minerals correlates directly with the amount of force/pressure applied during the preparation of backfilled powder samples. This work showed that manual preparation can produce highly variable peak intensities especially with minerals that show any preferred orientation. KEYWORDS Clay; XRD; kaolinite INTRODUCTION Clays are important in our life and they have numerous applications in modern world from cosmetics to environmental remediation. Therefore, clays have been extensively investigated for many years. Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as the mineral processing industry faces more complex mineralogy with the need for better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores and plan accordingly. In most studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) method has shown the unique capability to characterise mineralogy, especially for the fine grained size materials. The XRD technique is particularly diagnostic for clays. It is known that under ideal conditions, the peak intensities of an XRD diffractogram are proportional to the concentrations of individual minerals present in the sample. Hence, the qualitative mineralogical data obtained from XRD can be quantified, using either the internal or external standard methods. However, it is also known that clays are particularly sensitive to the influences of sample preparation method due to their physical characteristics (e.g. fine grain size, morphology, relative physical softness, crystallinity, thermal sensitivity) that could be destroyed by inappropriate preparation prior to the analysis. Thermal and mechanical treatment and grinding of clays can change their crystalline structure, and consequently, their characterisation results by XRD analysis. The behaviour of clays in grinding has been widely studied, especially for kaolinite (Miller and Oulton, 1970, Milocevic et al., 1992, Tomasevic-Canovic et al., 1992). With prolonged grinding time, the crystallinity of the clays can decrease (Filipovic-Petrovic et al., 2002). It has been shown that grinding may gradually cause the loss of hydroxyl ions of kaolinite (Gonzalez Garcia et al., 1991)."

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible.
