This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting the dewatering performance of industrial hydrocyclones from laboratory models. It highlights the challenge of scaling up design and operating parameters for efficiency estimation. The paper describes experiments with a 2-inch and 4-inch hydrocyclone using silica sand. It details the development of a model using the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model and a simulator to estimate model parameters. The model is validated with experimental data, and a new model is developed using 4-inch hydrocyclone data. The technique is then extended to predict dimensions for a full-scale dewatering cyclone operating at higher throughput and solid concentration.

The Bureau of Mines has studied slags associated with ferrous melting, to evaluate substitutes for the auxiliary flux mineral, fluorspar. A waste material recovered from alumina reduction cells, "used potlining," was tested in an 18-in-ID basic-lined cupola and in a 1/4-ton, pilot-scale, basic oxygen furnace (BOF). One potlining fraction, No. 1 cut, is a carbonaceous (graphitic) material and represents the bulk of the entire cell lining. The other fraction, No. 2 cut, is a refractory backup. These materials contain significant quantities of fluorine and other elements fn various compounds. The potlining fractions were blended in ratios believed representative of available materials. Both lump and pelletized forms provided extremely fluid slag. No adverse effects were found on furnace performance, chemistry or strength of the metals produced, or the environment. Fluorine recovery in the slag and fluorine losses to the scrubber water and solids were about the same as when fluorspar was used. There was apparently no lining loss from the cupola, but there was lining attack in the BOF. Since the fluidizing ability of potlining is due in part to sodium and other elements such as aluminum and silicon, less fluorine is needed in the slags when potlining is used.

Conneaut has a long and illustrious history as a major Great Lakes port for coal and iron ore. The first dock was built in 1892 for unloading iron ore from the Mesabi Range for shipment to the Pittsburgh steel mills via the Shenango & Lake Erie Railroad, later to become the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company was incorporated in 1893. The world's first Hulett automatic ore unloader was constructed at Conneaut in 1899. Steam operated, it was the model for the giant electric Huletts used today, named after its inventor, George Hulett, who was a Conneaut resident.

"We have designed a planar perpendicular flow cell for electrochemical measurement of a mineral available as a fine powder. The working electrode consisting of mineral powder supported on a carbon paste surface as a 4 mm diameter disk, was concentrically positioned inside a vertical tubular reactor. The counter electrode was a 316L tube embedded in the body cell. The supportive media was a 1.2:1 mixture of candle wax and graphite powder respectively, which is a good electrical conductor. The concentrate electrode as a film attached on a carbon paste disk was prepared rubbing the surface carbon paste against dried powdered mineral. An Ag/AgCl 1 M KCl cell as a reference electrode was attached to the body cell by using a fast coupling fitting. A stable flow rate was achieved using a frequency inverter to drive the pump motor. The flow through the cell verified to be laminar due to the Reynolds number in the cell flow passage. Cyclic voltammetry from - 1200 a 600 mVSAgE were measured using a carbon paste with and without mineral attached to the surface. The main findings of this work were: a). Electrochemical measurement of mineral powder in contact with flowing samples was easily achieved using ground mineral. This is important where massive samples are not available. b). The voltammetric curve features of ground mineral coincided with reported data. c). The working electrode could be quickly replaced while maintaining very good reproducibility."

The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Newmont Boddington Orebody (NBO) is a large, diffuse Au/Cu orebody in Western Australias South-West corner with approximately 20Moz Au in current Reserves. The current sulphide Resource is reported after calculation with the non-linear estimation technique Uniform Conditioning to account for the mining selectivity being smaller than the average drillhole spacing. Simulation of Au grade is also run over the entire orebody reviewing risk and uncertainty. There are differences in results from the two methods. These have been investigated and the lessons learned of the influencing parameters and effect of technique alone, are helpful for applications to other orebodies.

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

During 1946 several limestone deposits near Fortson, Snohomish County, Wash., were examined by the Bureau of Mines. These examinations were part of a long-range investigative program of regional mineral supplies required by the anticipated industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The .study outlined in the following paper was specifically undertaken to disclose new sources of high-purity limestone and to appraise, their economic aspects. The deposits examined -namely the Galbraith, Climax, and Hi, Hi -are somewhat similar in physical features and geologic environment. They are lenticular and belong to the same formation of metamorphosed sediments that underlies the prominent Whitehorse Ridge.

"Japan’s Great Tohoku Earthquake and the immediately following tsunami of March 11, 2011 killed more than fifteen thousand people and destroyed numerous buildings and infrastructures in the northeastern part of the country.In addition to reconstruction projects in the areas where the earthquake and tsunami hit, other seismically vulnerable regions in the country have started building new and more robust facilities as well as upgrading existing coastal structures so they will be able to cope with such deadly seismic and hydraulic force. This paper will highlight two different types of aseismic and anti-tsunami levee upgrades currently under construction on the coast of Kochi Prefecture, approximately 500 miles west of Tokyo. The first type is the installation of double sheet pile walls in existing seawalls. The second type is to drive tubular piles into existing levee structures for reinforcing them. Both sheet and tubular piles are being driven by the Press-in Piling Method without removing or compromising the function of the existing structures. 1. BACKGROUNDGreat Tohoku Earthquake of March 11, 2011 caused severe damage to many structures. ASCE’s survey of damaged coastal structures conducted immediately after the disaster by Ewing, et al. (2014) categorizes failure modes of the structures in the following manner.?Overtopping without structural failure.?Overtopping with structural damage or failure.?Wave uplift forces.?Movement of structure off foundation from sliding, rotation, or overtopping.?Impact loads.?Hydrostatic pressure.?Supercritical flows.?Scour.?Erosion.?Abutments end effects.?Subsidence."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a mass spectrometer method for deter-mining the helium-3 content of high-purity helium. The work was performed to evaluate experimental methods for removing helium-3 from high-purity helium and to better determine the composition of pure helium used in research. This was accomplished by increasing the inlet sample pressure, ionizing current, and amplification of the current produced by the ions collected on a conventional mass spectrometer that had been modified. With these modifications, the helium-3 content was determined in the parts-per-million and parts-per-billion range in helium-4.

Ammonium-nitrate is a main component in blasting agents and dissolved ammonium residues may be discharged with mine water. The European Union aims to reach a good state of the water quality and recommends ammonium content below 0.5 mg/L for drinking water. Natural zeolites adsorb ammonium from water. In this work, the removal of low-concentration ammonium by commercial natural zeolites was studied in continuous tests. Natural zeolites made up between 83% and 95% of the mineral composition. The major zeolite minerals were chabazite and clinoptiolites and minor amounts of erionite and mordenite were as well present. The five natural zeolite samples, 500~710 µm, were conditioned to obtain zeolites in the Na-form. Ammonium adsorption onto natural zeolites depends mainly on the zeolite mineral type. The chabazite containing zeolite was superior over the four clinoptiolite samples for the removal of low concentrations of ammonium from water (pH of 7.5, flow 5 mL/min, room temperature). The adsorption capacity of chabazite was 48.3 mg NH4+/g zeolites, i.e. 73% of the theoretical exchange capacity 69 mg NH4+/g, during duration over 107 days and almost 6700 bed volumes exchanged. The four tested clinoptiolites had an ad-sorption capacity of 15.7mg to 25.0 mg NH4+/g zeolites. The natural zeolites were rapidly regenerated by an alkaline sodium chloride solution fed to the columns.

The EAF smelting process of ilmenite concentrate consumes large amounts of energy. Semi-melting reduction can lower the reaction temperature and separate the iron and slag more thoroughly. However, this needs additives and pre-oxidation to promote the reaction. In this paper, the pre-oxidized ilmenite powders were reduced isothermally with graphite and Na2SO4. The influence of reduction conditions on the metallization ratio of samples, such as reaction temperature, and sodium sulfate additive were investigated. The results show that additive such as Na2SO4 can significantly decrease the melting point of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate.

With more than 20 major mines extracting copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and lime, Arizona is recognized as one of the better mining jurisdictions, not just in the United States, but in the world. However, that is not to say the road to production is always paved with gold, or in many cases, copper. Earning the license to mine in Arizona is a complex process with years of paperwork and permitting before the first tons of ore are ever processed. Now, get the federal government involved and the process becomes even more complex, and the path to production can become even longer.

This committee is to cover the whole mining industry, in which much progress in reducing accidents has been made in recent years. The Track Rock corundum mine was among the numerous corundum deposits investigated during the war by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop domestic reserves of that critical mineral. In the investigation of this property 562 feet of trenches were excavated and a l25-foot adit was reopened for the purpose of locating veins to of corundum which had been previously reported to occur in that locality. Only very minor amounts of corundum were disclosed in both the surface workings and the adit. The project was begun in May 1943 and completed in November 1943.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. The distribution equilibria of lead, zinc and copper between CaO-Si02-Ah03 melts and liquid copper were measured at 1623K under a controlled H2-C02 atmosphere. The distribution ratios were plotted against the oxygen partial pressure, and reasonable oxide forms dissolved in the melts were estimated from the slopes of the plots. The activity coefficients of zinc oxide (ZnO), lead oxide (PbO) and cuprous oxide (CuO0.5) increased with increasing slag basicity, defined by XCao/Xsio2 The temperature dependence of the activity coefficients was also measured.

"Ground improvement techniques such as vibro-replacement or deep soil mixing are fairly young products in the Brazilian geotechnical market. Soft soils in this country are deep, very soft, have low sensitivity and are challenging. In general, ground improvement techniques are increasingly selected as more costefficient and flexible solutions on infrastructure projects compared to the conventionall technologies such as piled embankments, wickdrains with surcharge or jet-grouting. The geotechnical challenge expansion project for the Porto Alegre Airport, South Brazil, involved a taxiway area of five ha of 8 to 10 m of soft clay deposit. The deep soil mixing (DSM) technique was selected as a cost-effective solution to reduce settlements. As part of the design, an extensive soil investigation programme includ ing laboratory and field trials was carried out to define the most economical slurry-recipe, DSM installation patterns and quality control specs. This paper gives details of the field and laboratory trials and present results.INTRODUCTIONThe International Airport of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil is located in an area with extensive sediments near to Guaíba Bay. During the different construction phases of the airport over the last decades, the soft clay deposits have been a challenge for the local geotechnical community as well as for the specialized contractors (Schnaid et al, 2001). As part of the most recent expansion scheme, a cargo-terminal with a five ha airplane tarmac area will be constructed."
