The peninsula of Florida is remarkable for the uniform character and simplicity of its geological structure. Major Henry Whiting, of the U. S. Army, was one of the first to give an account of the physical features and rocks of Florida, in an article published in 1839, in the American Journal of Science (vol. xxxv., p. 47). He says: " The rocks found in situ are all calcareous, though siliceous boulders are occasionally seen, and nodules of hornstone are here and there mingled with the limestone, which elicit sparks and are sometimes used by the Indians for flints."

The geostatistical method of indicator kriging (IK) was extended to analyze two-dimensional distributions of rock joint orientations. The IK method provides a non-parametric approach for spatial analysis of local probability distribu- tions. By taking into account the spatial correlation of rock joint outcomes and the relative geometry between estimation unit and samples, the IK method provides optimum, spatially conditioned estimates. The estimation method was tested by comparing distributions of actual mapped rock joint orientations with their corresponding kriged estimates. The comparisons show the unbiasedness and accuracy of the non-parametric approach for estimating local probability distributions.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environ¬mental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projections can then be made that will assist in the design of the toxic spoil package to limit the amount of ground water flowing through them.

A method of monitoring production information (raw tonnage and machine state) from each working section has been developed. The method is based on the sensing of electrical parameters in each section load center, and the reporting of this information through the existing mine-wide monitoring system. A decision-theoretic type of pattern classification technique has been used to define the machine states. The basis of the method is presented in this paper, along with a proposed hardware and software implementation scheme. Information issues central to the development and use of the proposed production monitoring system are also discussed.

As a followup to a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from a Sun Sparcstation-based worker-scheduling system of the mine-management support system to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, including their availability and work priorities during a shift. The system can optimally allocate manpower on a work shift and can delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software, including enhancements made to the original system, are described in detail.

ENGINEERING educators and industries are worried about the engineering manpower shortage that is predicted as a result of the increasing demand for trained engineers not only by industry but by the armed services. This is in the face of a decreasing supply, as is shown by this and other studies. Not only has the number of entering freshmen been decreasing since 1947, because of a decrease in the number of high school graduates entering engineering, but the total number of high school graduates will continue to decrease until 1958 because of the lowered birth rate during the depression years.

Underground mechanized excavation in New Zealand has become more commonplace in civil and mining applications during the last three years. At one stage up to seven Dosco Road- header machines were being used on different projects around the country. The Huntly West Mine Drifts inclined at one in four were by far the most severe grade conditions that the machines were subjected to; however, other operations posed their own particular problems for the machines. Two major interrelated factors became evident as soon as the machines commenced at Huntly. These were traction problems on the grade and control of water, particularly on the invert.

The paper describes a computer procedure for evaluating and selecting recoverable reserves in a mine worked by sublevel stoping. The boundaries of the volume to be mined are optimally defined by means of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, separately applied to both sides of the panels. The procedure, which has been developed for Masua Mine (Sardinia), also provides for smoothing the optimized boundaries, positioning the drilling drifts, interactive design of drilling fans and calculation of tonnage and grade of each volley. These tonnages and grades form the input of another procedure evolved for production planning.

A Data Acquisition System with a capacity to monitor 2000 analog instruments has been installed at the mines operated by the Zinc Lorporation, Limited and New broken hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/LVbHC), New South Wales, Australia. Since commissioning in March, 1982, the system has proved its value in providing up-to-date information to both Rock Mechanics and Mining personnel. The paper describes the function of the major software and hardware components of the system, and identifies the advantages that an on-line monitoring system provides in the day-to-day operation of a large underground mine.

Surface areas of two synthetic and three natural consolidated porous samples were obtained by the Orr low-pressure permeametry technique. The results suggest that the Orr technique is a useful substitute for the low-temperature gas adsorption (BET) method for determining the surface area of rock samples. It was more rapid than the BET method, and the surface-area values obtained were larger but agreed better with BET values than values calculated from the Kozeny-Carman equation. Efforts were unsuccessful to demonstrate the influence of channel-size distribution on pressure-flow rate curves by means of experimental data and a parallel channel model.

The completion of the 3rd expansion at Queensland Alumina added 725,000 t.p.y. capacity to what was already the world's largest alumina refinery. Rated design capacity is now 2.0 million t.p.y. The expansion was achieved by adding a separate liquor circuit, interconnected with the old at strategic points. This effectively linked a new facility to the existing plant. The resultant problems in controlling plant flow highlighted problems which required considerable operator retraining. The process control problems caused by an inexperienced work force are discussed as are some of the solutions now under study at Q.A.L.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a continuous ultrasonic flotation cell for the recovery of Florida phosphate ore. Within a small mixing chamber near the bottom of the flotation cell, an ultrasonic probe agitates an injected mixture of air, water, and phosphate ore and breaks the air into fine bubbles. Phosphate particles are preferentially attached to these fine bubbles and floated in the main chamber of the flotation cell. Over 94 pct of the phosphate was recovered, resulting in a 30 pct P205 concentrate. The ultrasonic energy consumption was less than 7 kW.h/mt of phosphate ore.

A gaseous chlorination process for the hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low-temperature chlorination -selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the process is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite concentrate micropellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established were used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

The development of a block model for a copper molybdenum ore deposit is described. The early use of the inverse distance power estimator, and later transition to geostatistics and kr iging, produced block models suitable for global reserve estimates. Because the global reserve was inadequate for routine mine planning, the production blast hole assays were incorporated into the block model, resulting in excellent local grade prediction. The on site use of small mini, and more powerful personal computers for estimating grades is described. The development of a computer aided, interactive graphic, mine planning system utilizing the grade block model is detailed.

THE property of Eureka Corp. Ltd. is located in the approximate geographic center of Nevada, 2 miles from Eureka, the county seat. The great sources of power, the Colorado, Snake, and Salmon Rivers and the rivers of northern California, are 300 to 500 miles distant, and no lines serve areas closer than 150 miles. Fuel for diesel and steam generation is available in Utah, 300 to 400 miles to the east. Eureka's railhead is 80 miles north where two trunk lines cross the county. A spur line serves Ely, 77 miles east. Good highways connect Eureka to the railheads.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. The authors present laboratory and plant results illustrating the benefits to be gained by using chemical additives, namely flocculants and surfactant dewatering aids, in the Bayer process. Advantages of synthetic flocculants over starch are illustrated in terms of more efficient solid/liquid separation in both the initial settling of blow-down slurries and in the CCD wash train. In addition, it is shown that the use of synthetic flocculants considerably reduce the levels of organic contaminants present in the process liquor. Secondly, very significant improvements in moisture removal were obtained by the application of dewatering aids to hydrate filtration/ washing operations.

The Chatham Rise is a submarine topographic feature lying off the east coast of New Zealand between the South Island and the Chatham Islands and within New Zealand?s jurisdiction. The Chatham Rise hosts economically significant deposits of rock phosphate and other potentially valuable minerals. The deposits comprise nodules lying on, or just below the surface of the seabed in shallow waters. Rock phosphate is an essential ingredient of fertilizer and can be applied directly to pasture. There is a realistic opportunity the phosphate deposits could supply New Zealand?s agricultural requirements for an estimated 30-year period at current rates of consumption.
