The Bureau of Mines sponsored an investigation of the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of certain solvents and hydraulic fluids used in underground mining operations. The following halogenated solvents were studied in view of their usefulness and their flame retardant property: tetrachloroethylene, C12C = CC12; 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, CIH2CCHC12: and trichloroethylene, C12C = CHC1. The hydraulic fluids studied were representative of five groups approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for underground operation, namely: glycol-water solutions, mineral oil-water emulsions, synthetics other than phosphate esters, synthetic phosphate esters, and mixtures of phosphate esters with mineral oils and other ingredients. It was observed that the partially halogenated solvents present a greater potential toxic hazard than the fully halogenated materials, due not only to the easy production of hydrogen chloride but also to their ease of oxidation leading to the formation of phosgene and carbon monoxide. The pure phosphate esters exhibited the best thermal oxidative stability of the five groups of hydraulic fluids tested. A fluid containing phosphate esters mixed with mineral oils and other unidentified ingredients appeared to be the most hazardous On the basis that it produced very toxic acrolein and phosphine.

The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation (Drake, 1972), Table 1. In 1970, the production of sand and gravel totaled 944 million tons valued at $1.1 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 140 million tons, together with Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and New York, account for 43 % of the total production in the nation. In commercial usage, "sand" applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No, 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). "Gravel" consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 3%-in. maximum size. The construction industry consumes 96% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster.

THE electrical properties of porous conductors have been studied ever since such materials, usually prepared by pressing and sintering of metallic powders, obtained practical importance. In most cases, however, the results have not been easy to interpret because of the great number of independent variables such as powder size, pressure, pressing rate and temperature, subsequent thermal history, porosity, and so on, which enter into the fabrication of industrially desirable materials. In recent years an interpretation of these properties has become of interest because the electrical properties of many new substances, prepared as fine powders by crystallization from the vapor phase or by reactions in the solid state at high temperatures, have to be determined on porous samples formed from the powder. Since theoretically significant information must refer to the fully dense state of the material, it is important to relate the electrical properties measured on such porous samples to those expected for a sample of 100 per cent density. A simple theory for the porosity dependence of the electrical conductivity and the Hall effect was recently proposed by Juretschke, Landauer, and Swanson.' IT is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise remov-ing one of the alloying constituents.

It is now generally conceded that if a steel is to develop optimum physical properties in the conventionally quenched and tempered condition, the microstruc- ture after quenching should consist wholly of martensite; and that transformation of austenite to intermediate-temperature products during quenching will have a deleterious effect upon the physical properties, particularly the toughness, of the tempered material. This implies that, in order to obtain the optimum physical properties from a given steel, its "harden-ability " should be high enough to suppress all transformation except that to martensite under the heating and quenching conditions to which it will be subjected, and this premise is probably the most important reason for hardenability control. However, the criterion of hardenability that at present is most widely accepted and used is based on a microstructure of 50 per cent martensite. This criterion, which was suggested by Grossmann,' does have considerable justification. It may be readily measured by a fracture or etch test and, since it represents the point at which the hardness is changing most rapidly with variations in cooling rate, it may be determined empirically from a hardness-depth curve by determining the point of steepest slope (the inflection point). The world's most popular method of longwall mining requires multiple entry systems for the panels. In contrast to this mine layout the roadways in German coal mining are used for advanced mining from the rock mechanic point of view or are even re-used by a second panel. This procedure of roadway use is presented within this paper using a 3D visualisation software tool. In the previous conferences in Morgantown several papas had addressed the basics of rock mechanic background, planning tools and variants. This paper gives a practical case study for reuse of a roadway in a German coal mine. The heading and the use of various alternatives are compared under the aspect of efficiency and costs. Within the comparison the specific requirements and benchmarks of German coal mines are taken into consideration. The costs for a multiple entry system and first of all the development rates that can be achieved with common road heading systems are compared with international layout alternatives. A prospect includes a discussion of pro and con for various development methods. Devices are given due to this prospect if and how multiple entry systems are applicable to German coal mines. The paper gives an initial point for international comparison and is a base for further discussion.

An analytical method developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine dawsonite, nahcolite, and nondawsonite alumina (called excess alumina) extractable from Green River Formation oil shales is presented. The method requires water extraction of nahcolite followed by HCI-extraction of dawsonite and an unidentified mineral yielding excess alumina from the water-leached residue. Instrumental determination of sodium in the water extract and sodium and aluminum in the HCI extract measures the sample's content of the minerals. Detailed evaluation shows the method to be adequately specific, precise, and reproducible and free from uncorrectable interferences. The method's results define precisely the production of sodium carbonates and alumina possible from a sample of oil shale and the interval it represents. Shale-oil yields, nahcolite contents, and yields of extractable alumina determined on 83 samples representing an 821-foot section of dawsonite-nahcolite-bearing shale from .Colorado Corehole No.3, drilled in the north part of Colorado's Piceance Creek Basin, are presented. These samples resulted in nahcolite contents to 53.3 percent, oil yields to 48.3 gallons per ton, and alumina yields to 5.80 percent. Use of these data to evaluate the production potential of a section of the formation are suggested.

Illinois No.6, a high-volatile B coal of low fluidity, was blended with fluidized-bed char and coke breeze to improve the strength of the coke obtained from carbonizing this coal. Twenty-one tests, selected from those made in the small-scale Hanson carbonizer, were carbonized in the BM-AGA 13-inch-diameter, cylindrical retort, with a coal charge of about 90 pounds; the strength of the cokes was determined by the standard ASTM tumbler test. Using the same procedure, 10 tests were made with High Splint, a high-volatile A coal from Harlan County, Ky. Carbonization of the blends produced larger and stronger cokes than did the Illinois No.6 coal singly. The optimum blend contained 6 percent each of char and coke breeze. Further improvement in coke strength was realized by either preheating this blend prior to carbonization or by adding a small pro-portion of a premium blending coal. The former method could possibly eliminate the use of premium coking coals in blends with Illinois No. 6 coal to make an acceptable metallurgical coke. Except for no improvement in coke strength by preheating, results for High Splint coal showed behavior similar to that of the Illinois No.6 coal.

Asturias, in northern Spain, emits 18 Mt CO2/year to the atmosphere, which supposes the biggest industrial CO2 emissions in the country. In order to avoid CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, keeping the availability of energy from fossil fuels, background studies focussed to the selection of favourable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary. In Asturias, the options for CO2 geological storage are sequestration in deep saline aquifers or sequestration in unexploted coal beds. In the area, there is the biggest coal basin of the country and a great Palaeozoic sedimentary basin with appropriate silicoclastic or carbonated reservoirs and impermeable caprock for CO2 geological storage, located in proximity to thermoelectric power plants and other sources of CO2 emissions. All evidences suggest that CO2 storage in deep aquifers is the most interesting option but a legal planning and a technical regulation are still to be done. The possibility for CO2 sequestration in coal beds is modest and associated to the CBM commercial exploitation. It is necessary to have in mind that the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in Asturias apart of technical factors will depend on price of CO2 ton, legal conditioning and possibility to apply emission rights to projects.

The necessity for good management and economic working in our mines and ore-dressing sheds is impressed upon us by the present low prices of all our metals. Silver, lead, copper, and tin have all suffered a heavy decline during the last six or twelve months, and many mines have been shut down simply on account of the low market value of the ore produced. After fully considering the position of the mining industry. I am convinced that considerable improvements will have to be made to make it as prosperous as it ought to be. The most obvious of these improvements are good management, good machinery, and as little interference by directors as possible. If these conditions are insisted upon and carried out efficielltly a poor mine may have a chance to weather the storm.There is no doubt that the present depression is the refilult of over-speculation and general loss of confidence by which the whole commercial system has been affected, and every branch has suffered more or less, mining not excepted. It has suffered heavy losses in the past, and the future is not over bright we are, therefore, compelled to be careful in everything by which mining is affected and savings can be secured.

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaS042H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal con- stituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product.

The reclamation of an open dragline pit (Pond A3P-2) at the Gibbons Creek lignite mine in east-central Texas required neutralization of acid mine pit water. At the start of treatment with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) on March 28, 2000, the pond had partially filled with 913,000 m3 (740 acre ft) of pH 4.9 water. Another 666,600 m3 (540 acre ft) of pH 3.3 water was pumped in from an adjacent pit (PitA3P- 1). By the end of the project (July 5, 2000), a combined volume of 1,579,000m3(1,280ac-ft or 417milliongal) in PondA3P-2 had been successfully treated to pH 8.2 with 431 t (475 st) of lime. This was two to three times more neutralizer than laboratory trials and detailed chemical titration had predicted. The main reasons for the difference are thought to be the inadequate representation in a laboratory setting of some of the chemical reactions that occurred in the field, including incomplete mixing of reactants, reactions with clay minerals in the pit walls, the kinetics of biologically-mediated reactions and the kinetics of aluminum oxyhydroxide polymerization (aging).

The rockbolting method of support is employed widely in several countries in different of mines. Hard rock mines use this method extensively. Soft rock mines, such as coal mines, have employed standing supports (steel sets) as the main method, although some countries such as the U.S.A. and Australia have preferred rockbolting. There is increasing interest in extending the rockbolting method in coal mines. The application of rockbolting techniques in an industry which traditionally has not applied such techniques, has required the development of a systematic design approach. This design approach uses extensive monitoring, to asses the viability of the support system in differing conditions. Currently at a number of new and existing mine developments in the U.K., rockbolting is being successfully applied. Although, inevitably some localised geotechnical problems have been encountered and have needed to be taken into account. The effect of faulting on roadway conditions is discussed in this paper and a design approach has been applied using a numerical analysis method, namely the Finite Element Method. The results presented in the paper serve as a useful guide to roadway support designers, and in particular the role played by different bolts in a range of conditions.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

"Inco's Automated Haulage Truck System (AHT) is a revolutionary automatic guided vehicle that performs all load, haul and dump operations without human intervention. As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

Drainage of gas has been practiced overseas for almost half a century. Peal advances in drainage of gas to combat high emissions became practicable in the late fifties and early sixties when the technology was standardised to use it under a variety of mining and geological conditions. Today methane drainage is practiced in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ibmania, U.S.S.R., China, Japan, Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. Australia entered the list of countries using gas drainage on 3rd March, 1980 when the first full scale gas drainage system was set up and commissioned at West Cliff Colliery to drain gas from the Bulli Seam. Methods used in Europe are different from those used in North America, Japan and Australia mainly because of the different mining methods and also because of the limited number of seams under extraction, relatively new coal fields, and comparatively larger distance between the seams. In spite of the difference in the technique, the basic aim is the same and that is to improve ventilation and reduce ventilation costs, alleviate dangerous gas accummulation, overcome outburst hazards and ultimately make mining safer and more efficient. A structural study of northwest Fergusson Island, part of the D'Entrecasteaux Group, was undertaken using colour and monochrome aerial photography and Landsat imagery. The resulting interpretation shows an upstanding, in part, dome-like metamorphic core complex, which is bound on three sides by an en echelon series of low-angle, thrust faults. Faceted gneissic layers occur throughout the complex. These facets are triangular in plan view and range in size from a few tens of metres, to massive composite zones which traverse the entire uplifted zone, The lower surface of each of the facets are, in fact, low-angle decollements which, during uplift, slid one upon the other to accommodate the vertical and extensional movements. As a consequence, deep structural valleys developed which widen towards the zone of maximum uplift. In many places, recognisable topographic features are replicated on both sides of these valleys, and under the stereoscope can be visually reconstructed to their original pre break-up positions. The southern margin of the core complex is less dome-like and falls away, via a series of deeply-entrenched structural valleys, towards a volcano-studded lowland. The lowland appears to belong to a rift or arm, stemming from the more southerly located Goodenough Bay Infrabasin.
