In mid-November, a long awaited announcement was made by John Drybrough, President of Granduc Mines Ltd. In short, he said that the extensive exploration conducted by his company and its parent organization, Newmont Mining Corp., have indicated the feasibility of a commercial copper mining operation at the company's prospect located slightly north of Stewart, B.C., and just east of the Alaskan Panhandle. The financing of the project is now being planned. SUMMARY OF PROJECT Granduc reasonably assured ore reserves are estimated at 32,510,000 tons averaging 1.93% copper content before dilution, of which 20,670,000 tons averaging 2.08;:; copper content are situated above the proposed mine access tunnel at elevation 2475 above sea level. The life of the reserves at the planned rate of production is 13 1/2 years. The probability of finding substantial additions to these present reserves is considered good.

Jen Inc., operator of the Cord mine, in the Big Indian district of San Juan County, Utah, has a contract with a milling company that provides a small bonus for proper grading and preparation of uranium ores shipped. To obtain maximum returns on this contract very close grading is required with settlements made on individual lots, which vary from 250 to 300 tons. Another feature of the contract, and one that is rather unique in this country, is that the ore is sold over truck scales at the mine. Grade is determined at the buyer's sample plant. It is necessary to take a moisture sample of each truckload shipped for ac- curate weighing and this is done by the representative of the buyer, using facilities supplied by Jen Inc. The sample is hardly more than a grab sample and includes only the finer and smaller pieces of the ore shipped.

This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. Gentlemen, you heard the good Doctor has commissioned me to make a'summary of the proceedings to date and also to close the said proceedings. It seems that over the years the business of making a summary alternates between'Mr. Pearce and myself, also I,think that w~oever is around onthe day in question 'obtains the task and apparently I drew it this, year. It is hoped you will be patient as previous experience in this capacity'indicates that the best way to proceed is to have a brief summary on each paper and then do a summary of summa~ies. This makes the approacha little cumbersome but it is felt to be fair to each author and it brings'back to the audience some recollections of what transpired at the time and they can make their own decisions, which may not necessarily agree with those of the 'sum'marisor.

At the meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, Va., in June, 1883, I gave some facts in relation to charcoal pig iron of unusual strength, made from our carbonate ore taken from the mine at Amenia, N. Y. My object in again bringing the subject to the attention of the Institute, is to obtain, if possible, the solution of a prohlem in connection therewith. Our furnace is of the old type, stone stack 32 feet high by 9 feet 2 inches at top of bosh; bosh about 67O pitch; stone hearth; three tuyeres of 31/4-inch opening; fuel, a mixture of hard and soft coal; blast about & to # pound pressure, and heated to 400' to 600° Fahr. by iron pipe oven on top of stack. The analysis of the roasted carbonate ore, as before given to the Institute, is as follows:

Modern, research-based approaches to mineral exploration are essential to the future maintenance of the mineral industry. These need to fully utilise the rapidly expanding growth of understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust, and be properly integrated with advances in understanding of chemical and physical processes involved in ore formation. BMR has a major role to play in supporting the growth and utilisation of this research base, as well as maintaining the national geological and geophysical bases which are essential both to tactical and strategic interests of Australia and of its mineral industry. The objective development of data-process modelling is one target of such strategic research based on a more integrated approach to research by BMR, mineral companies, CSIRO and the universities with emphasis given to promoting positive feedback during research activities. Examples of the success of strategic research in Australia and overseas are noted in the Text.

The typical service life for a long distance slurry pipeline is15 to 25 years. Determination of wear rate for a pipeline could have a high economic impact on the pipeline project. Wear is a combination of chemical corrosion and mechanical abrasion. The contribution of each factor has to be determined project by project. Normally, chemical corrosion dominates the pipe wear in fine slurry pipelines. These pipelines have been designed with a velocity between 1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s. Solids are suspended with high homogeneity across the pipeline section. Bottom wear is not much greater than the top wear and not sensitive to velocity. The wear pattern in the pipeline transporting medium coarse solids, such as milled ore and tailings, is different. Wear concentrates on the bottom of pipeline and the outer bends, and is more sensitive to flow velocity. Wear distribution along the pipelines is similar.

During the last decade the proper training of operating and maintenance staff has been recognised as directly contributing to the successful startup and continuing operations of a metallurgical project. During this period Bechtel has assisted clients in the design, development and implementation of such training. The clients have been located in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, China and North America. The programmes have addressed mobile and fixed plant operations and maintenance in coal, copper, gold, borax and other mining environments. The level of sophistication has varied from highly structured and documented instruction to less formal, yet controlled efforts to reorient and enhance the skills of experienced workers to training personnel with no previous work experience. Many lessons have been learned, some easier than others. Blasting engineers are mainly concerned about fragmentation issues. Even further, this is the final goal of using explosives. A lot of models have been developed for controlling fragmentation distribution, but most of the time, they are based on physical phenomena using field data as input for rock characteristics. Fragmentation is a result of two phenomena: waves from the borehole, damaging and cracking the rock, and gas pressure, widening those cracks and spreading out rock fragments. This model simulates the P wave escaping from boreholes and the cracks created by these P waves. It takes into account rock characteristics, provided by digital imaging, and explosive characteristics coming from VOD measurements. What we need to focus on, is the interaction of P waves coming from each borehole related to different timing sequences. This paper presents several simulations that show the influence of the timing and the sequence accuracy on the fragmentation distribution.

In this paper, we introduce a methodology to optimise mining equipment operation in terms of the conflicting concerns of productivity and availability. We also introduce the concept of damage points and equipment dutymeters. These provide the mine management with tools to monitor the success of such optimisation. Since we have quoted the results of an on-going Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project, the apparent focus of this article is on draglines. However, the concept is equally applicable to other equipment. Mining is the type of business that requires a large investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product that is sold at a relatively low unit cost. In such a business, the key to competitiveness lies in achieving the full realisation of capital investment ie sustained production at high levels. Some of the concepts outlined in this paper are essential components of this picture.

The gasification of wastes containing an organic fraction is usually performed at low-medium temperature using different kind of catalysts. The off gas obtained is a mixture of carbon oxides, mainly carbon monoxide, and hydrogen and can be used for different energetic applications. The main problem is the production of tars in the off gas that has to be separated from the valuable gas flow and, finally, treated separately. An interesting alternative is the partial or total treatment of organics at high temperature. In this case, the off gas contains a higher content of hydrogen and elemental carbon as particulate matter. The energetic source to obtain a temperature in the range of 1,000 - 1,200 ºC is obtained by a plasma torch. In order to make de process attractive, an important issue to be considered is to commercialize the carbon obtained for different industrial applications.

The is the 13th year for this column and the 12th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. There still exist some holes in the list of royalties that readers hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. In spite of their pervasive use nationwide, there are states from which the author has no information about royalties for either of these commodities. The reader can help - share information about these missing states and next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sends helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The PDAC Digest contained an article that distinguished between ‘net smelter return royalty' and ‘net profits royalty’ (Haase). The article also lists clauses and details that Brown suggests should be included in a net profits royalty contract.

Anaconda's Jackpile uranium mine is a multi- million-ton open pit sandstone deposit, producing some 3000 tpd for the company mill. With minor exceptions, the orebody is in equilibrium, and the backbone of ore-grade control is the radiometric assay, which fortunately is dependable. Preparatory Sample Drilling: Before it is stripped, the orebody is diamond-drilled on 200-ft centers N-S and 100-ft centers E-W. Drill core is logged, split, and assayed radiometrically, and several samples are assayed chemically to check the equilibrium status. This information establishes the pit outline and the first rough estimate of ore. After stripping, diamond drill data is supplemented by rotary drillholes on 50-ft centers. Dry chip samples, collected every 2 ft, are prepared and assayed radiometrically at the mine. Details of the orebody are then available for study, and the basic mining plan is drawn up.

Adsorption of residual flotation reagents onto equilibrium fluid cracking catalysts is a promising method of purification of flotation process water. In the present paper, adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyl ammonium chloride (DAC) and sodium oleate onto a spent catalyst from petroleum industry was studied by analysing the residual concentration of the surfactant after contact with the zeolite catalyst. The adsorption of the DAC was rather low but SDS and sodium oleate presented a high affinity for the catalyst surface. The loading capacity was 4.2 kg/ton for SDS and 5.5 kg/ton for oleic acid. After the treatment of the loaded catalyst with a HCI 1 N solution these surfactants are desorbed and the catalyst may thus be regenerated. This would be an additional advantage to its low cost, not to mention its condition as a discarded product and its availability in large tonnages.

Blasting is known as the first step of rock breakage in mines. An indication of the importance of blasting is that more than 1 billion kg (2.2 billion lb) of explosives are used annually in Australia and 3 billion kg (6.6 billion lb) in the United States for rock breakage, more than 85% of which is used in the mining industry. The notion that blasting, as the first step of comminution, plays a significant role in crushing and grinding energy consumption is not an unfounded thinking. It can be noted that the comminution electrical energy consumption decreases in these ways: First, if the feed size to the primary crusher is decreased, less energy will be required to crush the ore to the same product size. Second, a decrease in work index (Wi) related to additional macro fracturing and micro fracturing within individual fragments.

Economic constraints require that the optimum mineral processing circuit be chosen for a given ore and then the circuit be optimized. Meloy (1983) developed a general methodology for finding the best circuit for a given ore. This analysis, however, did not specify a way to optimize the best circuit once it has been found. To optimize a given circuit, it is necessary to find the optimum set points for each unit operation in the circuit. Developed in this paper is a simple, general equation which, when applied, defines the optimum separation set point for the maximum mineral grade. This general equation, Equation (4), applies not only to simple ores, but also to complex ores containing variable and locked particles. Currently, the optimum set point can be calculated only for heavy media and cyclone circuits, because they are the only unit operations for which the necessary data has been measured.

The Prospero orebody is a part of the Helene mine at Cosmos and was scheduled to begin production in March 2008 after the exhaustion of the Tapinos orebody in the same mine. Treatment of the Tapinos orebody was challenging and it was envisaged that Prospero would have similar properties given that it was also anomalous in deleterious elements and would be of a similar mineral hosting. It was deemed necessary to undertake a metallurgical test work program to identify any potential processing issues, complex mineralogy or significant metallurgical domains. The paper discusses the processes which were employed to undertake the metallurgical test work program and describes the aspects that can be employed by other developers to quickly and effectively assess potential future orebodies. It will demonstrate that the work was successful at determining expected metallurgical behaviour, providing direction for mining operations and highlighting areas for more extensive research.
