Fluxes are used to promote pyrometallurgical processes that rely on adhesion (soldering or brazing) or fusion (gas and arc welding) to join metallic surfaces. In the adhesive processes, the metal surfaces to be joined are not melted; the join is formed using a filler metal with lower melting point than the base metal. Fusion welding involves use of heat in excess of the melting point of the base metal. The fused joint may be achieved either by simply fusing together metal surfaces brought in contact with each other or by introducing additional molten metal of similar composition to form a fused joint. ADHESIVE PROCESSES--SOLDERING AND BRAZING In order for molten filler metal, solder or braze, to spread in a manner that creates a successful join; the work surfaces on the base metal must be thoroughly cleansed. Fluxes remove stubborn oxide films and other surface contaminants, promote wetting of the work surfaces, add fluidity to the solder or braze, and enhance workability and ease of spreading. Brazing processes involve higher temperatures than those reached in soldering. Brazing fluxes, which must remain active and effective at the higher temperatures, differ from those employed in soldering. Some common fluxes used in adhesive processes are rosin for soldering tin and electrical connections, hydrochloric acid for use in soldering galvanized iron and other zinc surfaces, and borax for brazing. Soldering and brazing are similar processes, the primary difference being the temperature at which the joining operation is carried out. Soldered joints, produced with low-melting-point fillers (solders) that melt and flow at temperature less that 450°C (Althouse et al., 1988) can sustain loads of 1 to 1.7 MPa for extended periods of time (Anon., 1966). Brazing involves the use of filler materials with melting points commonly above 500°C and generally provides stronger joints than those obtained with solder. Both processes require local application of heat to melt and spread the filler so that the molten filler can wet (adhere to) the base metals by alloying and diffusion. Soldering Soldering is a means of joining metals by adhesion using a metallic bonding alloy as the filler, commonly a mixture of lead and tin. However, the adhesion of solder depends more on its ability to be keyed into minute surface irregularities than on alloying. The most familiar application is to provide and secure electrical connections. Soft solders can range from 1 to 70% tin with the remainder mostly lead. However, for general-purpose, soft-solder work, the alloy is commonly 50% lead-50% tin. Higher lead contents provide a wider range in the melting temperature and, for this reason, a 60% lead-40% tin alloy, which yields a mushy mixture, is used for wiped joints in lead sheet and pipe work. Conversely, 40% lead-60% tin alloys are used in soldering tin and other low- melting-point materials for which a narrower range of melting temperature is required. There are numerous other solder compositions such as tin-silver, 95% tin-5% silver and antimony-tin, 95% tin and 5% antimony (Carlin, Jr., 1992). Heat needed to melt and spread the solders is commonly provided by electrically heated, copper-tipped soldering irons or by means of torches; the solder is applied by hand, usually face-fed by means of wire. For wiped joints in plumbing and lead-cable splicing, the solder is manipulated with cloth pads. The molten solder wets the joint surfaces and is drawn, by surface tension, into minute fissures and capillary openings. Other applications involve use of induction heaters and furnaces with pre-shaped solder appropriately placed prior to fluxing and heating. In some processes, the joints are immersed in molten solder. Constituents and Role of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes generally fall into one of three categories: highly corrosive fluxes, intermediate fluxes, and noncorrosive fluxes. These same categories are sometimes designated inorganic, organic and rosin-based respectively (Althouse et al., 1988). Common constituents of each group are discussed briefly below. Corrosive Fluxes (Inorganic). Work with aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, high alloy steel, aluminum bronzes, and silicon bronzes is carried out at temperatures in the upper portion of the range for solder operations. Soldering these materials requires use of highly active, corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the formation of the especially stubborn, hard, oxide films that form on these materials upon exposure to the atmosphere. The corrosive fluxes consist of inorganic acids and salts that are applied either as pastes or dry. They are active at elevated temperatures and, since they remain active after the soldering is completed, must be completely removed. The main constituent of most corrosive fluxes is zinc chloride with a melting temperature well above the solidus temperature of most commercial tin-lead solders. It is made by the action of hydrochloric acid on zinc. When zinc chloride is used alone, un- melted particles of this corrosive salt get caught up in the joint and weaken it. For this reason, other inorganic salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sodium chloride (NaCl) may be added to lower the melting temperature. A mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride is very effective because the excellent oxide reducing properties of ammonium chloride and the protective action of the molten zinc chloride combine to produce a fluxing action superior to that achieved when either is used alone. The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

"The last time I spoke to you the potash industry was at a low point. Markets were bad and the industry depressed. Many people had left and there was very little being done in terms of development. The current situation is very much changed. The oversupply conditions have given way to a very tight supply capability. All of the firms in the business are expanding in one way or another. These expansions will run from simple debottlenecking through to complete new projects.In New Brunswick, the Potash Corporation of America is proceeding with a new project and the Dennison - Potacan Project is in progress. In Saskatchewan, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan has an ambitious 2.5 billion dollar expansion program underway while those in the private sector are taking a somewhat less ambitious but equally significant approach to obtain further tonnage out of existing facilities.The significance of these expansions to mineral processors is that we can expect to see expanded employment opportunities and through necessity a surge in innovation and development in an industry that has been traditionally very conservative. This presentation will review potash processing with a view towards highlighting some of the more recent developments."

Rock burst is one of the most serious mining hazards, adversely affecting the safety, economy and productivity of mines. It is a sudden manifestation of the release of strain energy stored in the rock mass. At present, there is no universally accepted method for predicting the timing of the rock burst. However, if the seismically hazardous regions in mines can be identified before they are exposed to mining then precautionary measures can be planned before the work begins. A study was conducted in Sudbury Nickel Belt and an approach has been proposed to identify rock burst prone workings on the basis of (a) Rock properties and bursting indices (b) In-situ approaches (c) Geological features (d) Mining conditions (e) Observations during mining operations (f) Comparison and analogy with previous case histories of bursting. This approach will facilitate the judicious application of the burst control techniques to seismically hazardous areas.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

Cameco Corporation is in the process of revitalizing the Key Lake mill. As part of this process, the company is considering installing the Rabbit Lake style strong acid stripping in solvent extraction. This would lead to using hydrogen peroxide for uranium precipitation. The process currently employs ammonia stripping and ammonia precipitation. As part of the process evaluation, an indirect fired drier pilot plant test was conducted. Most of the piers and other pile-supported marine structures in the New York City Harbor area were constructed prior to the widespread use of currently available pile protective systems. As a result, the support piling of many existing marine structures have experienced deterioration to an extent that their structural sufficiency is impaired long before the useful life of the structures they support is over. This situation presents special and unique problems of how to restore the structural integrity of these piles while at the same time allowing full use of the structures they support. Spearin, Preston & Burrows is a 100 year old New York City-based marine construction firm specializing in waterfront and foundation construction. In recent years it has undertaken and successfully completed several unusual projects in the New York City Harbor area involving the rehabilitation of existing, deteriorated piling underneath major, economically important marine structures. This work was accomplished using techniques that permitted full use of these structures. Several different pile rehabilitation systems were used, each having their own particular application to the deterioration problems of the piles supporting each structure.

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.

The traditional electrolyte for aluminium electrolysis is based on molten cryolite (Na3AlF6), acting as solvent for the raw material, alumina (Al2O3). Over the years there has been a trend to increase the content of excess aluminium fluoride (AlF3) to the cryolite-based electrolyte, in order to enhance the current efficiency of the process. In most cases one has ended up at 11?13 wt% excess AlF3because higher contents makes it difficult to control the heat balance of the process. This problem may be overcome if sensors are developed that will allow online control of electrolyte temperature and composition, and we may then see a surge towards still higher AlF3contents. In the development of new anode materials to replace the carbon anode with inert, oxygen-evolving anodes, focus is on anode corrosion, and a low electrolyte temperature is then highly desirable. While the conventional process operates at around 960°C, electrolyte temperatures as low as 750°C are being tested. This is achieved by having large excess contents of AlF3(40 wt%). The consequences of using such electrolyte compositions are discussed.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

This report is the second of a series of three that will evaluate, in order, the metallothermic, carbothermic, and electrolytic methods of magnesium production. The historical development of the carbothermic process is outlined. Production costs varying from 38.9 to 21.8 cents per pound of magnesium are estimated for different versions of the process. Additional suggested process modifications are listed. The technical and economic potential of the different versions are compared. Areas deemed most promising for future research on the process are delineated.

This is a report on the design, development, and manufacture of a prototype roof bolting machine for high rise applications. The machine is designed to traverse a 32 inch entry and rebolt a roof fall area to a height of 28 feet 10 inches. Covered in the report is a chronology of the project, an explanation of the design problems, and a description of their solutions. The report concludes that the equipment as designed is suitable for the purpose intended and further testing is recommended.

To assist with design, pricing, and assessment of risk on this progressive design-build project, 3D design models were prepared to increase visibility into realities of construction. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

The process of magnetic separation is based on the differences among magnetic susceptibilities of various mineral species. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents from a product stream. There are two major catagories to be considered when addressing magnetic separation of minerals. The first catagory refers to particle characterization and relative differences in magnetic susceptibility. The second catagory refers to design parameters and the magnetic field generated by the separator.
