"A research work has being carried out annmg at evaluating the possibility of treating simultaneously several electrochemical systems of spent batteries using the same process, in order to overcome the high costs and difficulties of selective collection and sorting. Zn-Mn02 systems, representing more than 75% of portable battery market, shall be treated in dedicated processes. The treatment assessment using a single hydrometallurgical process of the other major systems (NiCd, NiMH and Li-ion), having Ni and Co as main metals, was the aim of the research work here reported. Sulfuric acid leaching was demonstrated to be adequate for dissolving more than 90% of the metals of interest contained in batteries. The subsequent separation of metals by solvent extraction, using organophosphorous extractants like DEHPA and Cyanex 272, allowed the production of pure solutions of rare earths, cadmium/manganese, cobalt, nickel and lithium, enabling their further recovering.IntroductionRecycling is the best approach for end-of-life management of spent batteries mainly by environmental reasons but also motivated by resources conservation and, in some cases, by economic profits. Most relevant electrochemical systems of portable cells are Zn-Mn02 (ZMB, alkaline and saline), nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (LIB). These batteries are collected, sorted and usually treated separately, applying for pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical technologies, the former being the most common.Several processes have been developed and some of them industrially applied, as described in some available review papers [l, 2]. In Europe for ZMB systems the oldest processes are Batrec [3] and Citron [4]. Although having differences in details, both are based on pyrometallurgical recovery of zinc by distillation, in metallic or oxide forms, being manganese retained in the slag together with iron. Hydrometallurgical alternatives are also available, like Zincex [5] and Recupyl [ 6] processes, both using sulfuric acid solutions as leachant. The application of the existing technologies to battery recycling, instead of using dedicated processes, is other alternative already tested, being the Waeltz furnace or the Imperial Smelting some examples."

Blast fumes are a significant health risk to underground workers, containing several dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia. To ensure safe working conditions, workers are not normally allowed to re-enter a mine until the gases are cleared. To predict if gases can be cleared efficiently, simulations can be performed to estimate the gas levels following a blast. For accurate modelling, a calibrated airflow simulation is required in addition to blast-specific parameters such as the yield rate (representing the amount of gas released per kg of explosive) and the dispersion factor (representing how quickly the gases can enter the air stream from the explosive site). Those parameters are not easily determined, as they will vary from blast to blast. Many post-blast gas recordings on mine sites were studied and the correct parameters were determined to ensure an accurate gas simulation. The variability of the results was then analysed and correlation to known parameters is suggested. Finally, recommendations on how to determine the correct parameter are presented.

Metallurgical coal is an essential component for the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking process, which accounts for roughly 70% of total global steel production. To meet the growing demand for metallurgical coal, Arch Resources identified the potential to recover low- ash coal from ultra-fines discarded prior to the deslime flotation circuit across their portfolio of operations. Historically, many flotation circuits were designed to discard this ultra-fine coal due to high clay content and technological barriers to cost-effectively upgrade and dewater the coal to a saleable product. Recent advancements in high-intensity flotation technology, including the Eriez StackCell, have enabled coal producers to recover ultra-fine coal while minimizing capital and operating costs. In July 2023, Arch Resources commissioned the first full-scale ultra-fines recovery circuit utilizing StackCell high-intensity flotation technology at the Leer Mining Complex. This paper reviews the approach utilized to develop the flotation process design, learnings from the commissioning and ramp-up period, and performance data through the first year of operation.

"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. This ultimate limit is explored through time utilisation models, which were also developed for use in feasibility studies and mining contract modelling.Citation:Miller, B H and Price, R, 2016. "Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. Reflective in-seam wave detection has the advantages of a far detection range and wide applicability. It has been successfully used in detection of many abnormal geological structures in work-faces, such as faults and collapse columns. However, a reflective in-seam wave is a dispersion wave. It has weak energy and is always covered by the direct in-seam wave. In the past, underground seismic explorations were not able to image the opposite roadway using reflective in-seam waves. To solve this problem, we propose a new method of reflective in-seam wave imaging based on adaptive dispersion filtering. This method processes the reflective in-seam wave using a filter with the parameter of transmission distance. The degree of similarity of the filtered and the explosion signal is used to estimate the transmission distance and image the reflective objects. We test and verify this method using real underground seismic data. This research is helpful for the detection of coal mine goafs and abandoned roadways in work-faces or in front of tunneling ends.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., Lafayette, CA, under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

For the past ten years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps: 1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. 2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m /d. A pilot plant started operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop the processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and selective copper recovery from leach water. The principle of the biotechnological methods, full scale experience, and an overview of the test program at the copper mine are presented.

PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

For thermodynamic prediction, the deoxidation equilibrium of aluminum in Fe-36%Ni alloy was studied with a cold crucible under Ar gas atmosphere at 1773K. For the deoxidation reaction in liquid Fe-36%Ni base, i.e.: A12O3(s) = 2A1 + 3O The interaction parameters and the equilibrium constant between aluminum and oxygen in liquid Fe-36%Ni alloy are given in the following: eo Al = -3.8, roA1=0.9, eAl° = -6.4, rAl° = 700, rAIAIo = 3.1, roA1o = 833 within the composition range of [Al] < 1 mass%. The temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant was obtained in the range of 1773K < T < 1973K by using reported data and present results as follows: log KAo= 0.58-24463.7 / T The deoxidation equilibrium with aluminum in Fe-36%Ni could be thermodynamically well described in the range up [Al] < 1 mass% with first and second order interaction parameters as well as the equilibrium constant determined in this study.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a profitability analysis of producing crude oil by waterflooding. Included are the estimated costs of installation of water injection and producing equipment for waterfloods at 2,000 and 4,000 feet and the estimated annual operational expenses for each in west Texas. Using these cost estimates as a base for selecting a range of costs that are indicative of producing crude oil by waterflooding, a simulation technique was derived for determining the profitability under various conditions. Because of the large number of combinations of variables used in this study, a high-speed digital computer was utilized for the calculations. The variables include operational expenses, capitalized costs, price of the oil, annual production, and leasehold acquisition cost. The results obtained from the simulations are presented Fn the appendix. In addition, a nomographical approach was chosen for presentation of the profitability. Five nomographs are presented that can be used for fast estimation of the discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return that might be expected from a prospective or active operation under various sets of assumed conditions.

Operation improvement efforts at Hyuga Smelting Co., Ltd. have focused on calcining capacity in the reduction rotary kilns ("the kilns"), whose limited feed rate capacity had capped production at around 18,000t-NiN since 1995. To improve the kilns&apos; feed rate capacity of 80 wet t/hr, attempts were made to increase the gas flow in the kilns by increasing the capacity of the off-gas fans. However, as the increased gas flow resulted in only limited improvement of the kilns&apos; feed rate, a scoop feeder was installed on each kiln to add coal to the middle of each kiln&apos;s interior to gain a higher efficiency of thermal supply and conversion. With these gas flow and coal charge addition operations, the kilns&apos; feed rate capacity increased up to 120 wet t/hr, with burner fuel efficiency increasing by approx. 10% (approx. 5% in total with the additional coal included). At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. Magnesium hydroxide is used in a number of industrial applications, from the neutralisation of acid effluents to the production of pharmaceuticals. High-quality magnesium hydroxide powders can be produced by hydrating slow-reacting magnesia in dilute magnesium acetate solutions. The process of magnesia hydration shows many similarities with a typical hydrometallurgical leaching operation; however, its kinetics are crucial not only for process design and control, but also for the production of powders with a desirable particle morphology. This article shows the results of an experimental work whereby industrial heavily-burned magnesia powders were hydrated in 0.01 to 0.1 mol/L magnesium acetate solutions at temperatures ranging between 333 and 363 K. Examination of the magnesium hydroxide produced and the analysis of the kinetic data suggest that the hydration of heavily-burned magnesia in magnesium acetate solutions is a dissolution-precipitation process controlled by the dissolution of magnesia particles. The activation energy was estimated to be 60 kJ/mol, while the reaction order with respect to magnesium acetate concentration was found to be about one.

Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a sub¬strate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

Three-dimensional models are in increasing demand for design, maintenance, operations and construction project management. Point-clouds are the main output of automatic data collection using laser-scanners and photogrammetric technologies. Pipe-works may comprise 50% of the value of important construction projects such as industrial and research facilities. We have developed a practical and cost-effective approach, based on the Hough-transform and judicious use of domain constraints, to find, recognize and reconstruct/model 3D pipes within point-clouds fully automatically. The developed approach allows pipe growing within a 3D point-cloud. It samples the point-cloud to sequential orthogonal slices, detects pipe?s cross-sections within sampled slices and grows the pipe along the cross sections centerlines. It is validated using laser-scanner data from construction of the Engineering-VI building on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus. The system works on a typical laptop. Recognition and localization results are within a few millimeters. The presented approach opens the gate to broad applications of pipe-network modeling.

The Flin Flon mine is at present hoisting 5,000 tons of ore daily. In 1943, a peak production of 6,188 tons daily was maintained. Before discussing secondary blasting, it is felt that a short review of stoping procedure will be of value. A list of papers dealing with various phases of the mining operation is appended. Stoping Practice Stopes vary in width from 30 to 150 feet, in length from 200 to 450 feet, and in height from 200 to 500 feet. A typical stope would be 300 feet long, 300 feet high, and 90 feet wide. The dip of the orebodies varies from 60° to vertical, with an average of 82°. The ore is heavy, having a specific gravity of 4. Both sub-level benching and radial drilling are practised. Blast-hole diamond drills are responsible for 85 per cent of the total production. Two sizes of hole are drilled at present, 11 7 6 -inch and 1%-inch. For bench drilling, the burden on the 1 7/16-inch hole is six feet, with holes on 8-foot staggered centres; in radial drilling, the burden is six feet, with nine feet between the toes. The burden on the l 5/8-inch hole is eight feet with holes on 11-foot centres, or 13 feet on the toe of fanned holes. Holes are blasted with two No. 8 instantaneous electric caps per hole, using 403 Polar Forcite. A powder charge of 0.15 pounds per ton is used, with a tonnage factor of 5 and 6.4 per foot drilled for the two sizes. Two rows of holes are blasted together. Fragmentation is satisfactory with the above drilling pattern and powder charge. However, some overbreak and fall-off locally results in oversize material. It is estimated that, after primary breaking, 75 per cent of the ore will pass through the grizzly openings and 15 per cent will pass the draw points, leaving 10 per cent that must be broken further to pass the draw points.

The recycling of metal containing scrap is a common practice in the industry and has a long tradition. . In rec~nt years, this philosophy has been transferred to organic materials, in particular to thermoplastic polymers. BSB . Recycling GmbH, a company with a long experience in the treatment and recovery of lead from battery scrap,· had recognized this exploitation at an early stage and challenged it by a consequent continuation of the idea to recycle materials other than metals without degradation and maintaining the quality. These efforts resulted in an economic and environmentally acceptable solution producing high quality polypropylene compounds at BSB beside lead and lead alloys from battery scrap. The raw material fair the production of polypropylene compounds is shredded plastics from the separated casings of spent lead-acid batteries. The production of polypropylene with specific physical and mechanical properties is carried out by the accurate dosing of organic as well as inorganic additives. The result of the procedure is a novel product group "Seculene PP", a registered trademark of BSB Recycling GrnbH.

At the No. 4 Mine of Jim Walter Resources in Tuscaloosa County in the North Central part of the State of Alabama, the Mary Lee and Blue Creek coal beds lay 2000 feet below the surface. The quantity of methane gas stored within the coal bed reservoir at this depth and released during development mining necessitates that each coal producing section be ventilated using large air quantities approaching 100,000 cfm. In order to meet coal contractural commitments in the early stages of mine development by installing the necessary number of continuous mining machine units and to develop the mine to projected air shaft sites, high pressure, large volume mine ventilating fans were required. This presentation discusses the installation start-up and changeover procedures when two size GAF 31.5-28-1 TLT-Babcock 3500 Horsepower fans with adjustable pitch in flight blades were put on line while phasing out two Jeffrey Mining Machine Company 8HUA 117 Fans. A graph will be presented to depict the most economic diameter shaft size under 2000 feet of cover with different air quantity requirements.
