An inherent aspect of longwall mining is moving the equipment from a mined-out panel to a newly developed panel. Moving times may be reduced by detailed preplanning. A very useful tool for planning is MS Project. Using MS Project, one can efficiently plan, manage and coordinate a project from conception to conclusion. The critical path analysis identifies potential critical activities which may cause excessive time delays. Changes to the tasks on the critical path can have significant impact 0.n the completion of a project. Assigning additional resources to these tasks (either moving labor from other tasks to critical tasks or providing labor overtime work) may reduce the move time. Simultaneous activities are the candidates for moving the labor from an activity to another. Each time a change is made, the critical path should be recalculated. MS Project quickly recalculates schedules and lets you see how changes in one part of the project will affect the overall plan. In this fashion it is possible to minimize the longwall move time.

P. L. Jones (Sink and Float Corp., New York)—The comparisons between galena and ferrosilicon medium should be applied only to the specific sink-float process used at Mascot since no evidence is presented that allows the comparison to be extended generally to galena medium as now used in other forms of sink-float. It is stated that flotation recovery of galena medium was tried but was unsuccessful and therefore the elaborate gravity system of medium recovery was applied. The expense of the gravity system at Mascot was one of the reasons for changing to ferrosilicon. However two important sink-float plants treating a combined total of over 13,000 tons of ore per day are using flotation to clean galena medium most successfully and are obtaining medium recoveries comparable with those reported in the paper for ferrosilicon. Slightly increased zinc recovery is claimed due to the change-over but it is to be noted that at the time of the change a decreased density differential was obtained in the separator. Coal reserves of the United States are enormous. Considered on the basis of proven reserves, and compared with reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88% of the proven recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium used in burner reactors. Considered on the basis of "ultimate recoverable reserves", that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs and including those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery, coal still accounts for 75 % of the national total. In the U.S. hydrocarbon economy about 76% of the total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas and about 20% by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low, and assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20% supplied by coal may increase dramatically. Nearly a quarter of the petroleum consumed in the U.S. is imported. Natural gas is in shorter supply than petroleum and the problems of its importation seem at least as difficult as those of oil.

The recycling of metals can be very efficient with careful selection of the material being recycled. The volume and value of recycled ferrous scrap has lead to the development of steel mini-mills which in turn has caused major changes to the steel industry. Although much smaller in volume, the recycling of lead is very significant, with battery recycling accounting for 60 per cent of annual world production. This high recycle rate can be attributed to the relatively uniform feed-stock from lead-acid batteries. The recycling rates of other metals are considerably lower due to longer use and non-uniform product usage that results in less efficient segregation and processing. It is clear that recycling of metals has advantages but its sustainability is uncertain. What are the key benefits of metal recycling? Metal recycling has technical, economic and social impacts. It is relatively easy to assess recycling on a technical basis, but the social impacts are harder to evaluate. This paper examines some of the issues in evaluating the sustainability of metal recycling.

The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to beneficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly -24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant.

Since several years aog there is noted an increasing importance of the metallurgical vacuum technologies. This refers mainly to the extra furnace steel treatment processes, melting of steel and special alloys in the induction and arc vacuum furnaces, as well as refining processes of nonferrous metals. In the presented work, there is discussed a phenomenon of evaporation of volatile components of metal bath under reduced pressure with description of kinetics of this process. In this article are presented are the evaluation of the mass transfer coefficients in the melt and gaseous phase. Based on results of our own research on removal rate of impurities from liquid copper (bismuth, lead) in vacuum refining process, it is determined the thickness of hypothetical boundary layer in the gas phase. This allowed to formulate a general kinetic equation defining the evaporation rate of gaseous components from metal bath. The values of mass transfer coefficients determined from this equation were compared with experimental results by other authors working on the evaporation effect of melt components of metal alloys.

The greatest difficulty in choosing solutions to environmental problems ill a free market economy (such as ours) stems from two factors: adverse effects of pollution are largely external to the producer, and expenditures made that improve the environment result in benefits that are free to all, These two factors are sufficient to explain why the solution to many environmental problems is to be found in public action. Such action is most likely to be economic- ally efficient if it can be carried out so that industry retains the freedom to make decisions based on the free market. Two examples-a zoned discharge fee and innovation of recycling systems-illustrate the type of changes in the mineral industry that would lead to an improved environment. The first requires that ownership of the relevant public resources be vested in control agencies. The second indicates that profit opportunities existing in solid waste recycling should facilitate innovation. Both concepts can reduce environmental loadings but will require imaginative thought from persons in the mineral industries.

A coal bunker basically acts as a buffer and regulator to reduce the interruptions between its proceeding production system and succeeding haulage system so as to maximize the availability of the whole system. Although such a role has long been recognized, quantitatively studying it is still rarely seen in the literatures. Its unique characteristics, coupled with numerous transitional states, make it very complex to describe the state transitional process in analytical models and, also very difficult to seek an analytical solution. Moreover, the analytical models inappropriately consider the state of bunker being full or empty as a kind of failure, therefore, by no means can they realistically describe the impact of the difference between rates of coal flowing to and from a bunker on the system availability. In light of this, Monte Carlo simulation methods are suggested to reach an approximate solution. In comparison, simulation methods are simpler and more effective than analytical approaches. Applications of simulation methods to a Northern colliery for determining bunker size from the viewpoint of maximizing system's availability are discussed. The results are satisfactory.

The propagation of a shock wave through air as a result of quarry blasting consists only of one type of wave, the compression wave. This is in marked contrast to seismic waves where a number of different types of wave are generated by the one blasting event. Even so the interaction of the burn time of a single hole and the resulting air overpressure is still too complicated to be able to be accurately modelled from first principles. It is considered that the best way forward is to monitor an individual single hole to obtain a signature wave form that has resulted from this complex interaction. Once this wave form is known, the variation in geometry of a mutli-hole blast and the timings of the successive detonations can be modelled to give a sufficient degree of accuracy to recreate the likely magnitude, duration and wave form of a multi-hole quarry type blast. This can then be directly compared with actual air overpressure wave forms from quarry blast to verify the model.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

A large number of techniques are in use today to limit membrane fouling, among them certainly is air bubbling (which constitutes the transport medium in flotation) as applied in wastewater treatment; meanwhile, dispersed-air flotation is suitable as a pretreatment stage for microfiltration. The invented and investigated hybrid cell combines the advantages of both flotation and membrane separation, while overcoming their limitations, producing clean water from industrial wastewater. Metals recovery from dilute aqueous solutions is a promising application of this innovative hybrid process of flotation and microfiltration, further to solid/liquid separation. In this study, ceramic flat-sheet membrane modules were inserted inside a typical flotation cell in the laboratory tests, using multichannel geometry, combining flotation with microfiltration by submerged membranes; the latter requiring periodic backflushing. The specific objective was to apply this process for the efficient separation of effluents containing metal cations (here, zinc). The main examined parameters were: the initial metal concentration, flotation surfactant applied and air flowrate. The successful contribution of precipitate flotation was highlighted, while the observed metal removals were of the order of ~100 per cent.

JEROME ALEXANDER.-All of you undoubtedly know that a microscopic examination of metals will reveal many things; but we should go further than just simply using a low- or medium-powered- microscope and seek the reason why grain size varies under different conditions. When we get below the limits of the ordinary microscope, we enter the so-called colloidal field, which means that we are dealing with aggregations of matter that approximate, say, 100 millimicrons. The colloidal dimensions average approximately 50 millionths of a millimeter and extend down to about 3 µµ. This, of course, is beyond the range of visibility in the ordinary microscope. Just to give you an idea of this matter, if 1 cu. in. of platinum is reduced to a sheet five molecules thick, it will cover 7 acres; you can imagine the amount of surface involved when metal, or anything else, is subdivided to so high a degree. From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

THE proper classification of mining methods has received the earnest study of many mining engineers and has resulted in much technical con-troversy, depending no doubt upon the point from which classification is viewed or the use to which it is put. So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of under-ground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute TRANSACTIONS, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. At Balmat in northern New York State, the St. Joseph Lead Co.'s 2100-tpd zinc mining and milling operation is utilizing a unique thickener in conjunction with conventional crushing, grinding and flotation methods. From 1930 through 1962, zinc concentrates went directly from flotation to the filtering, drying and loading facilities, all of which had to operate 24 hr per day. Wide fluctuations in tonnage also had to be accommodated due to variations in the grade of ore. Many problems were thus encountered in filtering and drying, but the cost of installing a conventional, large diameter thickener could never be justified. In 1963, after thorough investigation, an unconventional thickener that is unusual in several respects was installed at Balmat. The tank depth is 16 ft instead of the normal 8 ft. The rakes are raised and lowered by having the main drive gear located on a movable platform. Automatic controls are programmed to raise the drive platform and rakes during one shift of storage. During the next two shifts of withdrawal, the controls are programmed to lower the drive platform and rakes.

The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

The occurrence of twins in a iron, generated during cooling through the ?-a transformation, is well established,1-8 but this phenomenon has been nearly ignored during the past 20 years. It is the purpose of this note to call attention to the prevalence of such twins and to illustrate their appearance. The work of paxton7 and Kelly8 has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that for Neumann bands (mechanical twins) in a iron the twinning plane is (112) and the twinning direction <III>. The agreement with McKeehan&apos;s earlier work4 on transformation twins indicates that both types of twins in ferrite follow the same twinning law. There is little doubt of this conclusion, but it could be strengthened by a microbeam X-ray determination of the orientation relationship between a single ferrite grain and a transformation twin within that grain, as in the technique used by Kelly8 on Neumann bands. The peninsula is roughly 700 miles long and 180 miles wide. The southern portion is the American-sponsored Republic of Korea and the northern half is the Soviet-promulgated People&apos;s Democratic Republic of Korea. The area of South Korea is almost 40,000 sq miles, about the size of the state of Maine, and contains a population estimated at 22.5 million. Prior to annexation by Japan in 1910, the Korean economy was based on a system of self-sufficient farming units, but with Japanese occupation it was geared to Japanese economy. Emphasis was placed on supplying raw materials for Japanese industry and food surpluses to help feed Japan, and on providing a connecting link with Manchuria, traditionally a major raw material source for Japan. Small metal refineries, ore processing, and semi-finished goods manufacturing units grew into existence in the northern part of Korea, where much of the electric power is generated. Under Japanese domination, the south remained essentially agricultural. Food productivity was increased, although manufacture of elementary consumer goods was stimulated for Japanese markets.

A method of determining the maximum concentrate solids rate or carrying capacity is described for given column operating conditions. The method requires alteration of the feed rate of solids to the column at a fixed residence time by manipulation of the % solid of the column feed pulp or the bias rate. The carrying capacity was measured for five streams at the Mt. Isa Mines Pb/Zn and Cu concentrators. As a potential scale up parameter, the mass of solids per unit time per unit column cross section (Ca, g/min.cm2) is explored. Ca is tentatively related linearly to the 80% passing size (d80) of the concentrate. For d80 < 15 pm Ca was less than 4 g/min.cm2 (8 lb/min.ft2) which makes it a critical consideration in scale-up for such fine feeds. An alternative carrying capacity parameter, mass of solids per unit volume of gas Cg was not as useful as Ca since Cg varied inversely with gas rate.
