The design of most underground mining machines shows little evidence of regard for ergonomic principles and operator comfort. Likewise, efficiency and ease of operation often appear to have been given little consideration in machines where ruggedness and simplicity have tended to dictate the configuration. Improvements in productivity are amongst the benefits to be gained by a different approach to machine design. The paper describes the philosophy and features of a test bed Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle undergoing trials at Mount Isa Mines. This machine is the outcome of a Research and Development Programme conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The diesel powered test bed features an enclosed, air conditioned cabin, with a suspended operator's control station and electrically operated controls. An electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission incorporating wheel slip control, is another innovation. The performance and operator acceptance of the machine has led to adoption of most of the concepts in a new machine now being put into production.

The work of D. J. McAdam, Jr.1,2 at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., on what has been called by him "corrosion-fatigue" has focussed the attention of the engineering profession in general, and of those interested especially in the study of corrosion in particular, on the importance of making tests which will indicate as nearly as possible what can be expected from a given material in service. Pitting is unquestionably the chief agent operating so tremendously to reduce fatigue limits, but in the light of previous work3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 it is fair to assume that absorbed hydrogen resulting from the action of the corroding medium upon steel may, under certain conditions, have a perceptible influence. The experiments described in this paper deal more precisely with stressless corrosion, or "prior-corrosion fatigue,"9 and have been carried out to test such an assumption, to segregate, if possible, the effect of pitting from that of absorbed hydrogen, and although very preliminary in nature they indicate results which are striking.

With the increase in complexity of conveyor systems and the inexorable demand for more capacity and availability, the ability of designers to accurately predict performance is becoming increasingly important. Dynamic analysis techniques for modelling wave mechanics in conveyors are finding increased applications. Unfortunately, the reliability of these modelling techniques is dependent on a thorough understanding of the performance characteristics of the components that make up the system. These characteristics include such things as response rate, hysteresis and efficiency. Some parameters such as idler rolling resistance can be easily quantified by measurement. More complicated drive parameters are difficult or impossible to measure, particularly in large horse-power equipment. One method of quantifying or at least bracketing the performance envelope of complicated pieces of equipment is to construct a mathematical model. This can be done quickly and economically, and the influence of various parameters can be determined. This paper sets out to demonstrate by example the usefulness of this technique in gaining an understanding of complicated systems. The model is developed and the influence of a number of variables are examined.

Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

Studies carried out over the last 10 years reveal that precipitating particles which may appear in alkaline solutions of long-chain amines and in acidic solutions of fatty acids exhibit clear isoelectric points around pH 10.6-1 1 for dodecylamine and around pH 2.5-3 for fatty acids. These colloidal species can accumulate at solid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces and affect flotation. While the precipitate in solutions of fatty acids apparently can chemically interact with the mineral surfaces and is flotation-active if sufficiently long conditioning time is available, the cationic flotation of quartz in alkaline solutions is depressed by the colloidal precipitate. The experimental data available in literature on the adsorption, electrokinetic, contact angle and surface forces measurements in the solutions of the weak electrolyte collectors are analyzed and the role played by the precipitate is discussed. It is shown that these concepts allow for an explanation of the selective flotation of sylvite from halite with long-chain amines in potash ore flotation.

Bastnaesite is a natural rare-earth fluorcarbonate of the cerium group that affords an abundant and high-grade source of the lighter rare-earth elements. A simple and efficient method has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for extracting rare-earth compounds from this mineral. Digesting of a flotation concentrate with sulfuric acid converts the rare-earth compounds from fluorcarbonates to sulfates. Action of the acid releases gaseous com-pounds of fluorine and silicon, leaving the sulfated material free of these elements; carbon dioxide from carbonate decomposition is eliminated at the same time. Calcining the sulfated material at 1,200° F. renders the gangue constituents insoluble, whereas the rare-earth sulfates are left in water-soluble form. Leaching with water yields a solution of pure rare-earth sulfates. Bastnaesite could become prominent as a source of cerium-group rare-earth elements. It is rich in the light rare-earth elements and comparatively easy to process; reserves of the mineral are extensive enough to supply a greatly expanded market for many years.

Determine the effectiveness of remining operations in reducing contaminant load (acidity, iron, and sulfate) of discharges emanating from abandoned surface and underground coal mines. Background Until the implementation of remining initiatives, most States had regulations that held the operator remining an abandoned site responsible for preexisting acid mine drainage (AMD) discharges. For example, if a mining. company wanted to remine an area hydrologically connected to an existing AMD discharge, the company became responsible, as soon as the site was activated, for treating that discharge to meet effluent standards. If the mining operation improved the quality of the discharge, but the discharge failed to meet effluent standards, the company was held accountable for perpetual treatment. Because of this regulation, most mine operators avoided abandoned sites with minable coal reserves and AMD discharges. However, changes in remining legislation allow coal companies to be released from treatment liability as long as the post-remining pollution load does not exceed the pre-remining level. The prospect of utilizing bacteria in mining and metallurgical processes introduces a new and challenging area of investigation. Elements of bacteriology and metallurgy are discussed in connection with possible areas where biological science might be applied in extractive metallurgy. Bacteria may prove important in the selective separation of metals from ores and metallurgical solutions, the production of sulfur from gypsum or pyrites, and the production of sulfuric acid from elemental sulfur. A series of reports concerning the experimental applications of bacteria on minerals and metallic ores will follow this paper. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the action of bacteria in the oxidation of sulfide minerals and their potential uses in metallurgical processes. Primary attention has been given to the possible utilization of certain strains of autotrophic bacteria that live in industrial leaching solutions or fractures of mineral outcrops. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the mining and metallurgical engineer with micro-organisms and some of their possible applications in the field of extractive metallurgy.

THE conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompany-ing failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installa-tions of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and tempera-tures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

A probabilistic approach is proposed for updating open pit slope sta- bility based on successful performance. The suggested approach is developed within the framework of Bayesian probability theory. In seeking solutions to geomechanics problems consideration must be given to inher- ent variability of shear strength parameters and to the errors in the esti- mation of these parameters. The latter can be significant and may lead to consistent overestimation or underestimation of the values derived from site investigation and testing. Conventional deterministic methods of slope stability analysis do not allow systematic modelling of uncertainties in applied loads or in shear strength parameters. Within a probabilistic framework indicators of stability may be calculated, e.g., the reliability index and the probability of failure. Based on observation of slope per- formance at any given stage of a project, the mean or the standard devi- ation (or both) of a shear strength parameter may be updated. Consequently the indicators of stability can also be updated. The appli- cation of such an approach is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

When designing pillars in coal and hard rock mines it is necessary to determine the strength of the rock mass forming the pillars. Empirical strength equations, based on rock mass classification techniques, assume that the rock mass is isotropic, this simplification may result in under estimation of pillar strength. Numerical model studies showed that the effect of jointing on pillar strength diminishes as the width to height ratio of a pillar increases. Therefore, the weakening effect of joints should not be equally applied to all pillars regardless of their width to height ratio. The paper presents equations that were developed from laboratory tests on jointed rock samples and numerical models to account for the effects of joint orientation, friction, frequency, and pillar width to height ratio on pillar strength. The equations were calibrated using field data of actual pillar performance in South African coal mines. The method was applied in two case studies in which the strength of jointed coal pillars was assessed and layouts were designed accordingly.

SEVERAL studies1-10 have reported a type of grain boundary migration which occurs when a strained grain grows into an adjacent deformed grain during annealing. Beck and Sperry called this phenomenon strain-induced grain boundary migration, since the observed boundary movement, which takes place in a direction away from the center of curvature, is apparently motivated by the excess free energy of strain hardening. However, little information has been obtained on the detailed structural changes accompanying such grain boundary motion. The problem of driving force for strain-induced boundary migration was considered by Dunn and Daniels,' who used bent bicrystals of Si-Fe. They demonstrated that two grains of differing energy, in the form of subboundaries, behaved according to the concept that the low-energy grain would grow at the expense of the high-energy grain. Beck" reported experiments of Sperry for high-purity aluminum, which indicated that generally the particular grain of a pair which work-hardened more was invaded. At least 85 000 tonnes of mine tailings were discharged into Deepdell Creek, east Otago between 1890s and 1940s. The tailings contained about 1 wt % arsenic, so about 850 tonnes of arsenic in the form of arsenopyrite was discharged. Annual floods have removed nearly all tailings within c. 60 years. Small amounts of arsenic-bearing sediments (<250 ppm) remain in Deepdell Creek. About 7 kg/year dissolved arsenic was discharged in groundwater from mineralised Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone rocks in the vicinity of the historic mine sites. Adsorption of this arsenic on to iron oxyhydroxides in the stream sediments may have contributed to the elevated As content of those sediments. Even less arsenic remains in the main Shag valley below the Deepdell Creek confluence (15 - 25 ppm As). Rare relict arsenopyrite grains are trapped in bedrock crevices 25 km from source. No tailings deposition is detectable in theShag River estuary, and the tailings have presumably been discharged into the sea. Natural rehabilitation of the Shag catchment has been rapid and effective.

For many mining operations the challenge of equalling World Best Practices has become the key motivator for increasing mine productivities and for lowering total costs. In most instances this will only be achieved if mines optimise their total system rather than minimising specific costs within unit operations. In the past, drilling and blasting have been viewed as a cost to be minimised rather than operations which should have their impacts fully leveraged. Once a hardrock orebody is defined the activity which has the most substantial impact in determining the efficiency of a mining operation is the blasting. The output from a blast affects every downstream operation; only by understanding the extent and interactions can the mine be optimised. Substantial improvements to hardrock mining, quarrying and excavation operations are achievable. Instead of seeking the regular one to three per cent improvements based on reduction of consumables, mine operators would be well advised to go for much bigger targets of ten to 30 per cent by fully leveraging the drill and blast operations.

The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.
