The use of oxygen (Goldox™) in gold leaching has emerged as a significant modification in the past nine years. The Goldox™ process was ori gi na 11 y developed by Afrox Ltd ( part of the BOC Group) and is currently used in South Africa, Australia, Canada and the United States. Although a variety of benefits have been observed with oxygen, this paper out 1 i nes the main ones with reference to Australian plant data. The case studies were categorised into the ore type: Oxide, blends and primary ore.

Professor D. G. Krige, of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of the Witwatersrand, received the degree of Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria at the Autumn Graduation Ceremony in April 1981. He was honoured an outstanding engineer for his world-renowned pioneering work in the field of statistical methods of ore valuation, or geostatistics as it has become known. Dr David Dekker discussed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to automation, the infrastructure required to support automation, and selecting the equipment for automation. Dekker stressed that automation involves a number of technologies. The mining industry is currently about part-way through the evolutionary process of achieving a fully integrated automation system. He pointed out that the final stages require parallel development of infrastructure such as mine communications. Technologies required for automation Automation systems consist of three parts: the gathering of information, the processing of that information, and taking action.

SEVERAL years ago the frequent breaking of wheels on the 66-cu. ft. cars used with the underground electric haulage suggested that the numerous frogs in the track might be a contributing cause toward this breakage. This paper describes the test processes performed to ensure the suitability of an RF-safe detonator for use in oilfield explosives operations on land and offshore locations where RF silence cannot be implemented or the distances from explosive systems arming operations to the RF source or sources are too close for conventional resistorized hot-wire detonators based on the safe distance tables. The test program for the detonator assembly was based on MIL-STD-461E, “Requirements for the Control of Electromagnetic Interference Characteristics of Subsystems and Equipment”, 20 August 19991.

The process of gas purging in molten aluminium has been an industrial practice in Europe for many years. The advantages are a reduction in the hydrogen content and impurities in the melt, as well as a homogenisation of the temperature and chemical analysis in the molten metal. Formerly used lances or impellers are being replaced by porous plugs which are installed at the bottom of the furnace. This special product of RHI Refractories has proven its efficiency in primary melting as well as in die cast, sheet and extrusion plants.

The traditional concept of Optimum Drill and Blast is that it is achieved when ore is produced at the lowest unit cost and due to the complexities of most mining operations represents a band which extends either side of an overall cost minima. The above definition implies that Optimum Drill and Blast is static and once blasting is within the band around the cost minima then the process is optimised. However mining operations are not static with many events both long and short term impinging on the cost structure and productivity.

The Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited employs approximately 29 500 people, including 27000 Black workers recruited from areas both within and beyond the boundaries of the Republic of South Africa. The problems arising from the control of this diverse and complex labour force have led to the need for a fully computerized labour control system. This paper describes how, with the aid of an extensive interrelated network of satellite minicomputers, together with ancillary peripheral user terminals and printers, the management of Harmony Gold Mine intends to meet these problems.

For the first time in four years the number of mineral engineering students in the 228 engineering colleges of the U. S. and Canada exceeds 10,000. According to figures just released by the American Society for Engineering Education, the current enrollment of all engineering students is 222,178. The total of 10,274 mineral engineering students, undergraduate and graduate, is a 4% pct increase over a year ago. Total engineering is 11 pct larger than last year, about the same as in 1949-50, and 24 pct above 1950-51.

Several derivatives of soybean oil are currently manufactured and sold on the open market. Of these, the use of methylsoyate as a direct fuel substitute in diesel engines has been thoroughly researched and practically applied. The use of this product as a fuel gave rise to the idea of using a similar substitution in ANFO blasting agent. The first year of a three-year research program has been sponsored by the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council. The project is funded for the purpose of opening up of new markets for Missouri soybean products.

A survey of operating zinc smelters and refineries throughout the world has been done in conjunction with the Lead-Zinc 2000 Symposium. This survey follows the examples set by the Japanese Mining Industry Association in 1985 and 1995. Questionnaires were sent to operating zinc plants that covered feed materials, process details, energy consumption and labor requirements. The voluntary responses to the survey were tabulated. Key operating parameters including feed grade, production capacity, quality of the intermediate products and quality of the final products have been compared for both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes.

Due to its complex rheological behaviour, shotcrete induces a ground-structure interaction that differs significantly from other types of tunnel linings. For the same reason, the instrumentation of shotcrete linings presents special problems, particularly when it comes to estimating the stresses transferred to the lining during construction. The shotcrete characteristics which affect the stress distribution are initially discussed. Measurements obtained in a recent soft ground tunnel are also presented. The conclusions are aimed at introducing practical recommendations for the design of tunnels where shotcrete is used as initial and/or final support.

This paper introduces the mechanism and the operating process of dike building by silt squeezing blasting. DBSSB (dike building by silt squeezing blasting) has the following advantages: shorter construction period (the construction period is decided only by the speed of rock materials filling)greater consolidation of the body of the dike, more structural stability, smaller settlement. Therefore by conventional standards the same dike can be designed with a smaller cross section than other construction methods, and at a reduced cost when enough rock materials can be provided in site.
