AMONG electrical manufacturers, interest in the outlook for copper supplies has not diminished despite signs of a healthier market following price decontrol. Reason: Electrical utility industry output is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6 pct for the next 15 years. A more graphic description of the growth ahead is given in the Eighth Quarterly Report of the Director of Defense Mobilization as follows: "Power generating capability, which amounted to 63 million kw at the time of Korea, now stands at more than 81 million. The established goal for installed capability at the end of 1955 is 116 million kw. Orders already on the books of power equipment manufacturers, if fulfilled on schedule, will bring installed capability to over 123 million kw by the end of 1956-and more orders for equipment are yet to come." These statistics portend an impressive requirement for copper, not only for power plants and distribution lines themselves but for the multitude of industry and domestic end-uses.

Previous papers by the authors have presented a systems-engineering approach based on the premise that systems can only be optimized if all factors are considered and integrated into mine planning. This paper discusses the challenges inherent in optimizing the design of large-scale surface coal mining operations in Appalachia. Regulatory and permitting programs in the United States often focus on single parameters, rather than the full suite of desirable outcomes for sustainability. By utilizing geographic information system (GIS) tools to evaluate available data on environmental and social resources, the regulatory barriers which prevent operations from incorporating ecological and other sustainable development concerns into coal mine sustainability performance were identified. By analysis of the on-the-ground issues related to sustainability, the key parameters to be incorporated into an optimized coal mine design in Appalachia are discussed along with possible changes to the regulatory framework that would enhance incorporation of sustainability into coal mine design.

Laboratory studies in homogeneous material indicate that the area of new surfaces created by blasting is proportional to the energy imparted to the material. Field studies, however, show that fragmentation is also related to the rockmass structure. This paper reviews ongoing compilation of a comprehensive and integrated blasting database which is based upon field monitoring and laboratory testing. A priority application of the database is to support attempts to more fully understand structural control over fragmentation. Database construction and the relative importance of rockmass physical and mechanical properties are considered in the paper. A methodology for data collection prior to, during and after blasting is reviewed. Data summaries from three case studies of blast performance in surface and underground mines are presented. These illustrate various aspects of the methodology, which included image analysis to quantify the fragment shape and remnant geology evident in the muckpile as part of the evaluation of structural control over fragmentation.

The paper describes and discusses the use of stainless steels for leaching plants emphasising the duplex family, i.e., austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. This group has generally twice the proof strength of the more common 300-series austenitic grades, which implies possibilities to reduce the gauge at construction of pressure vessels and atmospheric tanks and vessels and thereby possibilities to reduce the weight. The duplex grades have also higher surface hardness resulting in better resistance to mechanical wear, i.e., abrasion and erosion corrosion. The lower contents of nickel and molybdenum imply lower cost and a more stable price considering the present market situation for these alloying elements. Corrosion data from laboratory and pilot plant tests, as well as examples of applications of duplex and highly alloyed austenitic grades, are presented. Cu2007 - Volume IV (Book 1) The John E. LS-Nikko Copper Inc, has been operating its Onsan copper smelter since 1979. The smelter began its operation with a designed capacity of 80,000 tpa of copper from concentrates and its smelting capacity was increased to 140,000 tpa of copper by modifying the existing line in 1988. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting and Converting Process has been operating since 1998 at the initial capacity of 160,000 tpa of copper. In 2002, the smelting capacity of the Onsan smelter has been increased to 426,000 tpa of copper from concentrate. Now the Onsan smelter has plans to increase its smelting capacity to 500,000 tpa of copper from concentrates by 2010. During the expansion work, the modernization of facilities will be accompanied by an increase in smelting capacity, via the Outokumpu process. This paper reviews the brief history of smelting capacity increase in Onsan smelter and its Outokumpu process modernization plans.

Bacterial leaching of the Doe Run Company?s cobalt/nickel-containing copper concentrate at low pH (pH 1.0-1.2) and high redox potential (>750 mV vs. SHE) enabled the cobalt and nickel to be preferentially dissolved over copper and iron due to the rapid passivation of the chalcopyrite component. Selective leaching of the cobalt and nickel was achieved with a mesophilic culture comprised mainly of Leptospirillum-like bacteria and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. This finding led to the conception of a novel hydrometallurgical process for passivating chalcopyrite and recovering the cobalt and nickel. The bacterial leaching process was tested extensively at the bench and pilot plant scales during 1997-1998. A pilot plant containing four leaching stages processed 30-40 kg/day of chalcopyrite concentrate continuously for 87 days. The cobalt extraction ranged from 75% to 86% during 6- and 8-day retention times respectively, whereas the copper extraction was limited to about 9%

This is a brief account of the history of unit operation in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, from the time of the agreement to prorate production in March, 1921, to the present. An attempt has been made to evaluate the savings in development and production costs resulting from the unit plans adopted. Summarized, these savings have amounted to $11,650,000. No effort has been made to estimate any increase in ultimate recovery, for it is believed that unit operation can be justified on saving in development and production costs alone. It would require nearly 20,000,000 barrels of additional oil to be produced in order to return the amount saved by not drilling unnecessary wells. California's coal resources are estimated to be 100 million tons, of which 50 percent is lignite, 40 percent subbituminous, and 10 percent bituminous. The occurrence of coal in California is rather limited and is restricted generally to the foothill regions of the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Significant quantities of coal have been mined in five areas: Ione in Amador County, Alberhill in Riverside County, Stone Canyon in Monterey County, CorralHollow in Alarneda County, and Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County. Most of the coal was rnined in the early 1900s and was used locally for fuel. Current mining operations are located in Amador County near the city of Ione. The two producing mines supply fuel to a mine-mouth co-generation power plant. The fuel coal is processed prior to burning to extract montan wax. Because California does not have primacy, coal mining in the state is regulated by the Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office.

Right across the universities of the developed world, the traditional disciplines of physics and chemistry are losing ground. Extractive metallurgy, which depends so heavily on chemistry, is also contracting despite a clear need for people with this kind of training in the mining industry. Reasons for this loss of popularity are discussed in this paper. High on the list is one of image. The extraction of metals is widely seen as a dirty, polluting, sunset industry which involves working in remote and uncomfortable corners of the earth for inadequate compensation. Ways in which the image problem can be overcome are considered. It is concluded that a concerted effort needs to be made by the universities and industry to redress this situation. The importance of extractive metallurgy, both now and in the future, when a greater emphasis will be placed on sustainability and recycling, needs to be stressed. In addition, courses need to incorporate training for a career path that leads on beyond extractive metallurgy.

In the present work, dielectric spectroscopy experiments were conducted on bentonite samples collected from Milos Island, in order to study their electrokinetic behavior in correlation with water content and mild heat treatment. Low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy has proved to be a power tool in the study of the electrical behavior of clay-water systems, because polarization and relaxation processes typically affect response at frequencies below 100 kHz. Therefore, dielectric and conductivity measurements in the frequency range of 10mHz to 1MHz were carried out by means of a high-resolution broadband spectrometer on bentonite samples, at various levels of hydration. The evolution of dielectric response was also examined after annealing of the samples. Experimental data were computer fitted with the empirical Havrilliak?Negami dielectric relaxation function on which a conductivity term was superimposed. The evaluated parameters of the fitting function are shown to be strongly affected by the water content of the measured samples.

GATES, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to the Secretary*).-The writer is delighted by the results shown in Mr. Bell's paper, which prove in an experimental way different from that followed by the writer' that "the work clone in crushing is proportional to the surface exposed by the operation," per Rittinger's Law. Mr. Bell's work was all clone in commercial types of crushing machines, while my work was clone in a testing machine; his work represents fully one hundred times the expenditure and time that my work represented; a great number of tests were made by his organization to determine single points, while I was obliged to depend on the general trend of a curve for results; we agree absolutely that "Kick's law," for which Mr. Stadler was sponsor, does not apply to rock crushing. While my work indicated the reliability of Rittinger's theory, Mr. Bell's work clearly establishes the reliability and makes it Rittinger's law.

FROM newspaper reports circulated in Indonesia, it seems quite obvious that many people, even the left-wingers, have serious doubts concerning the wisdom of the Indonesian Government in nationalizing the Bangka Island tin mines, formerly operated by the Dutch Billiton Co. Chief source of American dollars for Indonesia has been the 34,000 ton tin production of its mines. Right now, both left and right are concerned with whether the Government will be able to maintain and increase current production. The right wing Moslem party newspaper, Mimbar Indonesia, stated: "It will no longer be possible any more for radical labor leaders to find foreign scapegoats and tell the workers they are working only for foreign interests and foreign managements. It is up to labor now to increase its labors for the national good. It will be a new experience, and the problem is whether we are capable enough to manage these important mines."

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

Mine production systems (MPS) are characterized, more or less, by the following properties: uncertainty, subjectivity, impreciseness, polysemy, instability, indefiniteness and lack of data. From modern study aspect these MPS mathematically belong to the class of fuzzy systems. With this in mind, the usage of fuzzy sets is recommended as a methodology that treats impreciseness, indefiniteness and complexity of mine production systems in a satisfactory manner. Fuzzy modelling, discussed in this pa- per, is applied as a mathematical implement. The objective of the paper was to show production optimization in practice on the ex- ample of bauxite open pits where fuzzy linear programming (FLP) was used following the criterion per income. The variables in criterion function are linguistic variables while both variables and variable restrictions are presented by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN). The term "satisfactory income" presented through triangle fuzzy numbers was introduced instead of "maximizing the income". sensitivity of the obtained solutions has been analysed

Clean processing of copper converter slags for reclaiming cobalt and copper could be a challenge. An innovative and environmentally benign approach for recovering metal values from such a slag was developed in the present work. Curing the slag with sulfuric acid, without re-smelting or roasting as currently practiced in the industry, made it amenable to leaching, and more than 95% of the cobalt and up to 90% of the copper was extracted, together with iron, by water leaching, leaving silica behind in a residue. Copper in the leach liquor was recovered by cementation with iron, and the dissolved iron crystallized as ferrous sulfate monohydrate. Cobalt in the pregnant solution rich in iron was recovered by either cementation or sulfide precipitation. Chemical and mineralogical characterization of the slag and its products were examined and compared to determine the nature of the changes occurring during curing and leaching. Operating variables were also investigated and optimized.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.
