This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. An approach of geological mapping and descriptive criteria has been used to identify hydrothermal eruption breccias, named the Onemana Breccia. These in part mantle a gold bearing fossil hydrothermal system located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Whilst eruption breccias are documented from active and recent geothermal centres within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and in Northland their recognition at Onemana is the first confirmed discovery for this lithotype within ancient hydrothermal systems of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone. At Onemana the widespread occurrence of silicification, sinters, volcanic lake sediments, eruption breccias and advanced argillic alteration allows classic hot spring epithermal modelling. The geological setting, distribution, lithological characteristics, hydrothermal alteration and trace element geochemistry of the Onemana eruption breccias are described. These breccias are closely comparable with hydrothermal eruption deposits elsewhere, particularly those in active ore forming hydrothermal systems. Consideration is given specifically to the role of the Onemana Breccia in an exploration strategy for discovering epithermal gold-silver deposits.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Worldwide minerals exploration slipped in 1992 from 1991 levels. Although industrial production figures showed the US economy emerging from recession in early 1992, it was not until February 1993 that the lagging indicator of unemployment dropped to 7%. Most other industrialized countries are still in recession. Preliminary data for 1992 showed industrial production dropping in Japan (5%), Germany (1.4%), the United Kingdom (0.5%) and France (1.4%). The slowdown in industrial production led to reduced mineral demand. This resulted in lean cash flows from mining operations, which squeezed exploration funding. Although mineral prices were steady during most of 1992, some mineral commodity prices began falling in late 1992 and early this year. Exploration 1991-1992 According to Metals Economics Group (MEG), planned 1992 exploration expenditures were down by about 5%. Geographically, the leading exploration target was the United States with 21 % of the expenditures, followed by Australia (19%), Canada (18%), Latin America (15%), South Africa (9%) and the western Pacific (7.5%). The remaining 10% was split between Europe and Africa. There were absolute increases in exploration expenditures in the United States and Latin America. Latin America showed the largest increase. The change in the Mexican mining law allowing foreign ownership of mines should result in the inflow of direct foreign investment in Mexico's mining industry.

Recent legislation and expected future legislation is aimed at reducing the dust levels developed in underground coal mines. Several techniques for reducing dust levels are being evaluated. One of these is the modification of cutting parameters such as feed rates, cutting speeds, and pick configurations in order to reduce the amount of dust generated. In order to evaluate the feasibility of modifying cutting parameters to reduce dust, the Bureau of Mines commissioned Battelle to construct a small scale mining machine which could be used for evaluating the effects of those changes in cutting parameters. Specific features of this machine were that it should be highly instrumented to measure various cutting parameters, should have a wide range of feed and speed controls, and it should be possible to vary the pick configurations and geometries on the machine. In addition, it was desired that this machine should have cutting capabilities which greatly exceed present coal mining practice and also that the unit should be small enough and portable enough that it could be taken into and out of operating coal mines with a minimum of interference with the normal coal mine operations. The first step in constructing a machine to meet these requirements was to determine the cutting forces and approximate sizes of components which would be required to cut at the speeds and feeds specified by the Bureau of Mines. Initial calculations using; published data on cutting forces indicated that cutting forces in the neighborhood of 5,000 lbs and power levels of approximately 30 horsepower would be adequate for the application. However, further data developed during the course of the project indicated that when low efficiency picks are used, cutting forces and powers can be two to three times as high as these initially estimated values. Excavation bracing is a special structural system. It is built from the top down. The design is controlled by the economical construction of another structure as well as by the movement of the ground beyond the limits of its construction. It serves a number of purposes, all subordinate to the construction of the principal structure. Despite its importance, bracing design and construction is frequently overlooked in project planning, causing delays and expensive changes. Thoughtful planning, good design and resourceful, innovative construction can improve construction safety and save time and money.

A series of stemming confinement tests were conducted at a test site near Vernal, Utah. The purpose of the study was to determine the relative performance of various stemming enhancement “plugs”, stem types and loading configurations. The stemming performance was quantified in terms of: . Stem confinement time . Stem ejection velocity . Ground swell velocity . Ground vibration . Air blast . Crater formation Of primary interest was the performance of a new spherical stemming enhancement plug. The initial findings indicate that the hard plastic spheres improved blast performance when used appropriately. Their ability to improve blast performance is reduced when used in over confined or severely underconfined conditions. The study also evaluated the effects of air decking on stemming confinement and explosive performance.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (PKM) is a large-scale open pit mine located in northern Laos. It was developed and is operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM) a Lao-registered subsidiary company of Australian incorporated, PanAust Limited. Production commenced at Phu Kham in 2008. Since the second half of 2016, there has been a significant increase in ore hardness and this has negatively impacted the PKM concentrator and resulted in lower SAG mill throughput rates. Over the remaining life of mine, the changing ore body and increase in ore hardness is forecast to continue as the pit deepens and the availability of softer blending ores reduce. To manage this risk, PKM initiated a Hard Ores Management Program to determine the most effective way to improve the mill throughput of harder ores. This involved conducting a number of innovative and process control driven blasting trials to optimize run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation and other blasting outcomes. From 2016 to 2017, the performance of high powder factor blasting, electronic detonators and fast timing, high velocity of detonation (VOD) explosives, double-priming, and deck blasting, were individually and systematically assessed. The success of each blasting trial was then based on a ‘value for money’ criteria. This criteria is a cost / benefit analysis that weighed-up the additional cost to implement the trial against the measured improvement in mill throughput. Electronic and high VOD 90:10 emulsion:ANFO blasts were determined to have the best value for money, achieving an increase in mill throughput of 54% compared to baseline. This paper discusses how the implementation of an innovative and process control driven blasting trial methodology was able to successfully manage the hard ore challenges at PKM. In addition, this success was achieved without any major cost implications, safety incidents or process plant set-backs.

Improved skips, with lightweight cylindrical bodies, have made a significant contribution to advancing mine hoisting technology. New concept skips of aluminum bodies with rubber lining; fiberglas bodies with polyurethane liners have been designed and fabricated for field testing at an operating mine. New design, adjustable guide rollers have shown improved ride characteristics with noticeably less wear. Major reductions have been made in stress levels and stress concentrations. Field experience has shown the practicality of the approach. Guide alignment has been measured using the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS). Analysis has been applied to interpret the data. Field measurements in an operating shaft and a test tower have shown the agreement in data from GAMS and plumb wires. Reproducibility has been demonstrated. The data are useful to realign shafts, to use as s maintenance tool, and to evaluate the maximum safe hoisting speeds. The surveys are made at several hundred feet per minute and the system is self-contained. Dynamics of skip-guide interaction has been analyzed using the computer program SKIP II. The effects of speed, weight, type of guides, kind of misalignment have been studied. Resonance has been demonstrated and factors that eliminate resonance have been identified. Data from the GAMS surveys are applicable to the SKIP II program. Interaction between the hoist rope and the mine conveyance has also been studied. Computer programs and closed-form solutions are presented. Economic impact of lightweight skips is presented for an existing mine and for a new mine. Reduction in rope size has a profound effect when using a lightweight skip for the same capacity. Increased productivity can be realized by keeping maximum rope pull the same while increasing skip capacity. Examples and charts project the significant savings in capital expenditure for new installations.

In 2002, many in the mining industry — companies, academia and government — realized that the industry would soon be facing a serious shortfall in salaried and hourly employees. Depending on whose numbers are to be believed, 20 percent to 50 percent of current mining professionals are expected to retire within five to 10 years. And there are not enough students currently enrolled in mineral-related programs to the fill the need. Part of the impending shortage in professionals was brought on by the industry’s negative image, which discouraged students from enrolling in mining engineering programs. Another part was that the industry was in the doldrums and was seen by the public as a dying industry.

Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

Anhydrous neodymium trichlorids (NdCl3), containing ~1 weight percent neodymium oxychloride (NdOCI) was prepared by the dehydration of neodymium trichioride hexahydrate (NdC13.6H2O). Dehydration of the hexahydrate was conducted in three steps. First, the hexahydrate was slowly heated in air to about 250 °C until all the low temperature water of crystallization was removed. In the second stop, the neodymium hydroxychloride (Nd(OH)2C1) fanned in the first step was decomposed by heating under argon to 430 ° C. Finally the salt was ground and then treated with HCl gas at 330 °C until practically all of the NdOCl was converted to NdCl3.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) was established in the public interest to conclude inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations on mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increaseee efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to "disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act." In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make this kind of list both necessary and valuable. This edition describes reports and articles published during calendar years 1992 and 1993. Introduction If one had been called upon to describe petroleum oil refining seventy-five years ago, he could have acceded to the request quite satisfactorily in about fifteen minutes. Fifteen years ago, an hour and a half would have been sufficient to give a general idea of oil refining, and of the equipment used for this purpose. Today, so extensive has been the research into all phases of the refining and manufacturing of petroleum products, and so rapid the strides in improvement in technique and equipment, that I doubt if a week would suffice to give an adequate outline of ail the ramifications of present-day oil refining. I propose to only 'hit the high spots', dealing particularly with the equipment and methods employed at the Imperoyal refinery, which you are to visit. Crude oil, the refiner's raw material, contains essentially only two elements, hydrogen and carbon. These are not present in the free state but are combined in various proportions as 'hydrocarbons'. A given crude oil is not made up of just one hydrocarbon, but of myriads; some solid, others liquid, and still others gaseous at atmospheric temperature and pressure, ail dissolved one in the other. Moreover, the nature and the relative amounts of the several hydrocarbons vary very considerably in crude oils from different sources. That is, a 'crude' from Oklahoma will contain hydrocarbons not present in crude from Mexico, and is different again from the Venezuela crude. Not only this but oil in a certain well in, say, Peru may be differently constituted from that in a well half a mile distant from it.

Tyre hours/life deficit is a major operational challenge facing the mining industry which adversely affects materials production and costs. An accurate forecast of the tyre life is key in addressing this menace. This study for the first time employed the hybrid intelligent technique by utilising three metaheuristic optimisation algorithms, including particle swarm optimisation (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), and whale optimisation algorithm (WOA), as trainers for the parametric weights and biases to optimise multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) for enhancing prediction of on-site dump truck tyre life in the mine. Four hybrid models known as PSO-MLPNN, WOA-MLPNN, GA-MLPNN, and BP-MLPNN were developed using a total of 157 tyre dataset records obtained from a surface mine in Ghana. In assessing the prediction performances for the models developed, five statistical performance metrics of variance accounted for (VAF), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency index (NASH), coefficient of determination (r2), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and correlation coefficient (r) were utilised. Moreover, ranking, uncertainty analysis and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) techniques were utilised to establish the most effective hybrid model, whereas sensitivity analysis was conducted on the input parameters. Results achieved showed that PSO-MLPNN was the best for prediction because it had the least MAPE value of 1.196% and relatively high values of VAF (99.642%), NASH (0.996), r2 (0.996), and r (0.998). Besides, PSO-MLPNN had the best selection criteria values of 6, 7.1725, and 444.834 for the ranking, uncertainty analysis and BIC respectively. Hence, PSO-MLPNN is recommended for the prediction of on-site dump truck tyre life for the studied mine.

A method for the electrochemical reduction of the benzene ring was developed and applied to the electrochemical reduction of coal. Successive electrochemical reductions of a vitrain from low-volatile bituminous coal in ethylenediamine saturated with lithium chloride resulted in the addition of 53 hydrogens per 100 carbon atoms. Ultimate analyses and pyridine solubility of the vitrain recovered after each reduction showed that hydrogen added at the beginning has a much greater effect on solubility than hydrogen added at a later stage. Surprisingly, the removal of sulfur from the vitrain takes place only after the more reactive aromatic rings are reduced. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis and average molecular weight determination of the extracts of the reduced vitrain samples, representing about 18 percent of the vitrain, showed that these fractions had 95 percent of their hydrogen content on saturated carbon atoms and an average molecular weight of 800 to 900. A study of the effect of operating variables on current efficiency showed that current efficiency is highest with aluminum as cathode material and with lithium chloride as electrolyte. A substantial increase in current efficiency of difficulty reducible olefinic double bonds was achieved by adding a proton donor. This result is significant in connection with the electrochemical reduction of coal which proceeds from readily reducible aromatic double bonds to difficultly reducible isolated double bonds. It is proposed that reduction is achieved by electrolytically generated and subsequently solvated electrons and hence does not require prior adsorption of the substrate at the electrode surface. This offers a distinct advantage for electrolytic reduction of sparingly or insoluble substrates such as coal.

"During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in mapping major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to 1 inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately.Geology of the Abitibi RegionGeneral GeologyFaults of more than one age and type occur in the Abitibi region.
