The Advisory Conference on Tunnelling of the OECD, held in Washington, D.C. in June 1970, has established the following definition: "Tunnelling refers to the construction by any method of a covered cavity of predesigned geometry whose final location and use are under the surface, whose cross-sectional area is greater than 2 square metres". (1) The definition makes clear that the term includes all types of underground construction, be it in hard rock, soft ground, under mixed conditions, underwater, etc. Small-sized tunnels in rock therefore constitute but one part of the tunnelling scene. With an ever-growing urbanisation taking place in industrialized as well as developing countries, the demand for small-sized tunnels is, however, rapidly increasing and requires a far-reaching mechanization of excavation and support functions. This trend is accentuated by the fact that small-sized tunnels are far more labor-intensive than large ones, and, with wages raising at a much faster rate than costs for plant and equipment, this will accelerate the introduction of new tunnelling systems. "IntroductionPortland cement is produced by burning an accurately proportioned mixture (raw feed) of finely ground limestone, silica, alumina, and iron oxide. The kiln discharge (clinker) is a chemically complex mixture of calcium silicates, aluminates and ferrites which when ground and blended with from 2 to 5 percent of calcium sulphate is sold as Portland cement.ManufactureThe most common raw materials are limestone and clay or shale. The raw mix is finely ground and heated to about (2600°F) 1430°C to decompose the calcium carbonate and combine the calcium oxide with silica, alumina and iron to form a partly fused clinker. The clinker is then ground, usually with a small proportion of calcium sulphate (gypsum), which regulates set. Cements with special properties are produced by varying the oxide composition and also by adding small amounts of chemical agents at the clinker-grinding stage or later.Clinker is manufactured by either wet or dry process methods. In the wet process, raw materials are prepared, blended and fed to the kiln as a water slurry (about 30-35% water) . The chemical components in the saturated aqueous solution of ammonium dimolybdate (ADM) were investigated at room temperature by comparative Raman spectroscopy. In order to explore the further detailed results, a new method of qualitative and half quantitative analyses, based on the main vibrant frequencies and the intensity ratio of the strongest peak to the second strongest peak recorded in Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ammonium heptamolybdate tetra hydrate (AHM), was put forward and attempted to analyze the chemical components of saturated aqueous solution of ADM. The results showed that there was obvious difference between Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ADM and that of ADM, but there were good relationships between Raman spectrum of saturated aqueous solution of ADM and Raman spectra of the three samples including AHM, the saturated aqueous solution of AHM and monomolybdate ion in aqueous solution. It was found that aggregated dimolybdate ion ({Mo2O72-}n)did not exist in the saturated aqueous solution, and was changed into heptamolybdate ion (Mo7O246-) and monomolybdate ion (MoO42-), which were in equilibrium each other, but the distribution ratio of heptamolybdate ion was larger than that of monomolybdate ion. In addition, Raman spectral pattern of saturated aqueous solution of ADM was reported.

A statistical study of machinability led the writer to examine existing data in regard to a thermal conductivity-mechanical properties relationship. Various functional relationships were proposed and the multiple correlation determined by statistical methods discussed in detail in the 1iterature.4 The relationship having the greatest engineering and statistical significance is discussed below. The data for cast and wrought aluminum alloys''2 have been compiled and analyzed separately. The results of these analyses are presented in Table I. The empirical equations for estimating the thermal conductivity (cal sec-' cm-I °C) are: for cast aluminum alloys K = 0.584 -0.00984/ -0.00263 Hb [1] and for wrought aluminum alloys K = 0.604 -0.00424l- 0.00170 Hb [2] where 1 and Hb are the percentage elongation and Brinell hardness number. Results of a similar analysis pertaining to stainless steel3 are also given in Table I. This empirical equation for estimating thermal conductivity (Btu per sq ft per hr per °F per in.) is K = 216.19- 1.716l - 0.0997 Hb [3] The relationship between electrical resistivity and mechanical properties was also examined for aluminum alloys using the same statistical method. The dig instrument by blasting is a,new product we developed(See Fig. 1) It is an apparatus to dig hole at the ground. It is composed of combustor A, combustor B, charge pipe and shock head. Work characteristics of Combustor A are that combustion time is 1. 5 seconds, driving force is 725kg. Work characteristics of combustor B are that the combustion time is 1. 3 seconds, driving force is 460kg. After the combustor is ignited, the charge pipe is drived into ground immediately. Then, whole dig instrument is threw out automatically, but explosive in charge pipe is left in ground and blast in the twinkling. The diameter of vertical hole formed by blasting is 3cm to 60cm which is controlled according to engineering requirement. The maximum depth of the hole diged by using the dig instrument is 2M. It applies to blindage of single solidier in military affairs, and hole planting pole as well as sewer in civil use and so on. The two shots are charged in combustors to dig a hole. The maximum weight of shot is 490g, minimum is 130g. The whole process diging hole is completed automatically in about ten seconds.

The large amount of computer code required for this simulation model dictates that reasonable limitations be placed on some of the input variables. The program permits the following maximum sizes: 1. Ten mine car stations 2. Twenty track intersections 3. Three hundred mine cars 4. Eight motors 5. One hundred profiles 6. Twelve intersections between stations 7. Forty-five profile changes between stations 8. Thirty station pairs (routes) These may be changed by the user providing the particular computer in use has available core storage. HAVING had considerable practical experience in the management of colored mining labor in the South, I have thought a few observations upon its peculiarities might interest those not personally familiar with it. In mining, as in all other departments throughout the South, this class of labor is largely in excess of any other; and its characteristics need to be known and duly taken into consideration by those who may be charged with the conduct of southern enterprises. The colored laborers are fervently religious, intensely superstitious, improvident, and usually good natured and happy,—in a word, they are like children. That strong religious emotions do not involve necessarily a moral sense highly developed in the direction of ethics, is shown in the propensity of the colored population for chickenstealing, and in the brutal fights and other outbreaks of which they are not infrequeutly guilty, upon any slight provocation. It is only fair to say, however, that many individuals among them are in the highest degree steady and trustworthy. To one accustomed to seeing white miners at work in the middle, northern or western States, the colored miners seem somewhat slow and lazy. But their efficiency is greater than it appears to be. During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.

THE heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,1 and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 3and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700° C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, however, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600° or 700° C. and quenched.

Realizing that aluminum will have a great role to play in the coming industrialization of China, Chinese geologists have long been looking about for some aluminum deposits. The possible sources appear to be alunite, the alumina-rich shales, and the bauxite deposits. The locations of deposits are shown in Fig. I. Alunite Our attention was first directed to the alunite deposits along the southeastern coast of China. Table I summarizes the reserves now believed to exist in that region. Other alunite deposits have been found in Kiangpei, Szechuan province; Charming. Liuyang and Hsanshan, Hunnan province Tsingchow and Chowyuan, Shantung province. No reserve figures are available. High-alumina Shale Shale high enough in aluminum to serve as a source of that metal has been found in northeastern China(Tab1e 2). In Manchuria, the Manchuria Light Metals Co., at Antung and Fushun, operating under Japanese control, has been the only active producer of aluminum. "Bell Copper is situated (Latitude 55°0''N, Longitude 126°14W) on Newman Peninsula on the east side of Babine Lake at an altitude of 2,450 feet above sea level. The mine site is approximately 170 miles north west of Prince George and 40 miles east of Smithers. Access to the property is by way of 30 miles of paved road to the Village of Granisle on the west shore of Babine Lake and then a further 9 miles of unpaved road to Bell Copper's west dock. The two mile lake crossing is made using a tug and barge. A compressed air bubbler system maintains an ice free channel for the barge during the winter months.Temperatures range from summer maximums of around 32 °C to winter minimums in the region of minus 40°C. Long periods in winter may be spent with temperatures in the range of minus 15""C to minus 28°C. Freezing temperatures usually start in October and last for six months. The lake normally freezes over in mid December and the ice breaks up in mid May. Snow accounts for approximately two t11irds of the annual precipitation of twenty-one inches."

"This study investigates seismic wave propagation from two production shots in a limestone quarry. Our motivation is to investigate the efficiency of two superpositioning techniques. The production shots consisted of an 18 and 20 hole explosive array detonated in a single row with constant delay times of 32 and 20 ms, respectively. A single shot was fired on a neighboring part of the quarry bench. The experiments were instrumented with 20 three component seismometers (35-120 m range). The computer-controlled electronic firing system resulted in firing time deviations of less than 1.4% of desired fired times. Linear superpositioning with the observed single shot data produces seismograms which adequately reproduce temporal effects of the multiple explosions; however, spatial effects due to the extended source length (68-76 m) are not modeled with this method. Linear superpositioning with individual half-space Green's functions for each explosion in thearray convolved with a calculated Mueller-Murphy source produces seismograms which match the time duration of the observed production shot seismograms and differ in absolute peak amplitude by less than a factor of three. Parameter estimation for the source is taken from chemical explosion study results. The single source model differs in amplitude from the observed single source seismograms by a factor of 2.3."

Abstract - During geostatistical estimation of block grades, the kriging process produces a measure of error, the kriging variance or the kriging standard deviation. Estimation of the block error depends on the semi-variogram model for a deposit, which reflects fundamental characteristics of a deposit such as (1) nugget effect, (2) range of influence of grades, (3) different local spreads of data as a function of average grade (proportional effect), (4) nested structures, and (5) underlying anisotropies in the data; this model may be affected by sampling or assaying limitations, however. Because the kriging error incorporates so many features of both the deposit and data to be used for estimation, it may offer a substantial improvement on block classification over traditional procedures such as data density. Practice indicates that the relative kriging standard deviation (RKSD) is particularly useful for block classification in measured, indicated and inferred categories. Plots of RKSD in plan and section also can be used to demonstrate where extra drilling and sampling would be most advantageous for upgrading the class of some blocks. Moreover, the use of grade and RKSD filters can show where material near cut-off grade is poorly defined, indicating sampling target areas to improve block classification in the vicinity of the ore-waste boundary.

Discussion of the paper of C. F. TOLMAN, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 401 to 433. Louis C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-Of particular interest at this time is any paper that deals with chalcocite, the characteristic product of secondary enrichment and the copper mineral of greatest commercial importance, and that seeks to aid in the distinction between primary and secondary chalcocite-a distinction of much scientific and practical importance but one which thus far it has proved difficult to draw. The present paper on this subject by Professor Tolman, like the ,many preceding it which he and his colleagues at Stanford have published in the last couple of years, contains much of interest and suggestiveness. Without endeavoring at this time to review or comment upon Professor Tolman's conclusions in detail, I may say that many of them are in accord with the findings that my associates and I have been accumulating in the course of studying secondary enrichment in many of the copper deposits of the country. Achieving high current efficiencies when operating at high current densities is a goal for every refinery, whether conventional or permanent cathode technology is employed. To obtain higher current efficiency at increased current density at Caraiba's Tankhouse, the production team decided to change the cathode cycle from eleven to thirteen days, reducing cathode cycle to one per anode cycle. The idea was to reduce the anode-cathode spacing and consequently reduce the potential for short-circuiting them. With respect to current efficiency, the overall result was not much better than that obtained with the normal operating conditions. A new attempt to obtain higher current efficiency at high current density was implemented by going back to two cathode cycles per anode cycle, this time reducing cathode life to ten days. This approach yielded the highest current efficiencies. This paper presents the data generated with the three operating conditions: normal practice, a single cathode cycle per anode cycle, and two cathode cycles per anode cycle with a reduced cathode cycle time. It compares the productivity achieved with each set of operating conditions. An analysis of the main operating parameters as well as the advantages and disadvantages involved with each condition is also presented for future reference.

With the increasing importance being placed upon modernizing the coal industry as a result of recent developments in the international energy balance, computer control has been and is being instituted in many coal cleaning plants. Control techniques that are well established in many base metal industries have been adapted to coal washing. Essential to any control scheme is an accurate measure of the parameter which is to be controlled. A sensor is required that will provide information both quickly and precisely. In fine coal circuits, the critical parameter that must be measured and controlled is the per- cent ash contained in the clean coal product and tailings. Measuring the ash content of these slurry lines on a continuous basis enables the operating conditions in the circuit to be adjusted so as to obtain optimum separation efficiencies at all times. An on-line ash monitor has been developed and tested at Michigan Technological University which is capable of making percent ash and percent solids determinations instantaneously. Two radioisotopes are employed in this system to generate signals that can be related to the density and the ash content of the slurry. Such data provide a means to execute a short term control strategy.

In response to the need for enhanced precautionary measures to safeguard mine workers in collieries from the consequences of methane ignitions in a heading, the coal mining industry has ex- pressed the desire for the development and testing of active on board suppression systems. As overseas systems cannot be used directly in the bord and pillar geometry it is necessary to adapt overseas and local technology to suit local mining conditions, as well as to test such developed systems for their compliance with the expressed needs. As the systems have to be tested in a specific roadway configuration, a facility was developed to enable the testing in South Africa. A surface test facility has been established which can be used to develop and test suppression systems on continuous miners and roadheaders. This facility consists of a tunnel wherein compliance tests can be conducted in simulated underground conditions. A number of methane explosion tests have been conducted in the test facility. The explosions conducted varied in CH,/air concentration (7,5 to 9 percent) and volume (26 to 88 m3). At lower concentrations there was a marked reduction in explosion strength and flame speed. Tests carried out with the Explostop system successfully suppressed the propagation of methane ignitions in both scenarios tested.

INTRODUCTION The Metro Rail Project is approximately a 20-mile initial portion of Southern California's planned 150-mile transit network and will provide transit service to the dense population and employment centers within the Los Angeles regional core. The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) has defined, as the first segment, a 4.4-mile five station rail line, which extends from the yard and shop area near Union Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. Design packages are completed; utilities are currently being relocated; demolition is underway; early construction contracts have been awarded; and construction has started. This paper will describe the current status of the Metro Rail design and construction, after first briefly reviewing its history, objectives, and main components. PROJECT HISTORY The California State Legislature created the SCRTD in 1964 with a legislative mandate to design, construct, and operate a rapid transit system within the Los Angeles County area. To obtain the monies required to support this program, in June, 1974, Proposition 5 was passed by a solid majority, allowing a portion of state gasoline taxes to be used for rapid transit development. This measure provided a local source of funds for SCRTD to begin its rail rapid transit development program in Los Angeles.
