ABSTRACT It has been suggested that effective disaster prevention and response in mining requires that elements of emergency management be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making, much in the same way that the industry approaches routine risk management. Since Congress passed the MINER Act in 2006, the newly mandated structural and technological advancements in mine emergency response preparation have been made and are apparent, but measureable improvement in mineworker emergency preparedness is difficult to ascertain. To begin exploring whether measurable indicators of mine workforce preparedness can or should be addressed within a risk management framework, NIOSH researchers examined the datasets from two separate research efforts—one which measured the organizational safety climate and self-reported safety performance, and the other which measured individuals’ perceptions of their own self-escape competency. INTRODUCTION In response to the mine disasters in 2006, the United States Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act), which strengthened existing regulations [30 CFR, Part 48] and introduced new provisions to improve mine emergency response. Since that time, new technological and structural features, such as mandated redundant communication systems, personnel tracking systems, and lifelines in primary and secondary escapeways, have been installed in underground coal mines across the country. Additionally, mine operators are required to develop emergency response plans, provide adequate supplies of breathable air throughout the mine, provide more frequent and realistic expectations training, and are required to immediately notify the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the event of an accident. While the structural and technological advancements in emergency preparedness are readily observable and easily measured, levels of individual mineworker preparedness remain difficult to assess. There is a general consensus that deficiencies in competence in the non-routine tasks required for individual miners to effectively respond to a mine emergency likely remain (e.g., National Research Council [NRC], 2013), and NIOSH research continues address this concern (Haas, et al., 2015; Hoebbel et al., 2018). To maximize an operation’s capacity to effectively prevent disasters and/or respond to emergency events, it has been suggested that individual and emergency management efforts be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making in much the same way organizations manage routine risks to health and safety (Haddow et al., 2017). To the authors’ knowledge, the mindful intersection of routine risk management policies and practices and emergency prevention and response readiness have yet to be empirically studied within the mining industry.

The need for a successful, efficient and reliable continuous face- haulage .system for use with continuous mining machines has been apparent since the first continuous miners were introduced some twenty-five years ago. Some thought and effort were given to the development of continuous haulage over the last twenty years or so. Some initial success was experienced in this area by The Long Company with a system involving bridge conveyors, as far back as the late 1950's. However, extensive success with continuous face haulage for use behind modern, high product¬ion, continuous miners escaped the industry until the early 1970's. It is true that continuous face haulage was successfully introduced into low seam mining, generally in seams ranging under 1.07 m (42") in height, in the 1960's, for use with relatively low production, low seam, auger type continuous miners. However, those available systems which have achieved success in the lower seams, where relatively low capacities are adequate, are not directly applicable for use with today's medium and high seam miners with their standard production capacity of 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm). Since the late 1960's and early 1970's, several machinery manufacturers, and at least two major coal companies, have devoted considerable expense, time and effort to developing truly successful continuous face haulage for use in coal seams ranging upward from 1.2 m (4') in height. Continuous face haulage equipment has been developed in the last five years employing a variety of transportation media and design concepts, including some which have received wide publicity such as those employing hydraulics, and pleated belt. The truth of the matter is, however, that the only universally applicable and widely successful continuous face haulage equipment introduced to date has been that employing a combination of bridge conveyors and mobile, self-propelled, bridge carriers, connected at the inby end to the tail of the high production continuous miner, and at the outby end attached directly to the panel conveyor (Fig. 1 & Fig. 2) or, on occasion, to a short, self-contained conveyor which, in turn, empties directly onto the panel conveyor. While these bridge type continuous haulage systems are available with both belt and chain conveyor components, the most widely applied and successful system in seams above 1.07 m (42") in height is that offered by The Long-Airdox Company. The standard unit for use with 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm) continuous miners is normally equipped with belt. However, they have built, and successfully applied, versions of this system employing chain conveyors, (Fig. 3), mainly for operators having extremely difficult mining conditions, including excessive amounts of water

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of Humanitarian Engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a socio-technical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (10, 18). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement, and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts, and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency.

The Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of their processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step towards this goal is the application of a Digital Twin concept to provide Virtual Instruments. Haile has engaged ANDRITZ to implement Virtual Instruments at their grinding area hydrocyclones and at their tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The Digital Twin is a first principles IDEAS1 ™ simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions, and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters. INTRODUCTION OceanaGold’s Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was first mined in 1827, and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October, 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile Operation. The current operation began in 2017 as an open pit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 6,350 tpd ore, and 2017 production was 118k oz gold, with 140 to 155k oz gold expected in 2018. Proven and Probable reserves exceed 3 Moz. The process, as shown in Figure 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a Semi-Autonomous Grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon in leach (CIL) leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile Operation’s inaugural gold pour took place January 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through at least the year 2030. Based partially on prior experience of some key OceanaGold personnel with automation services from ANDRITZ on other projects, OceanaGold decided to include ANDRITZ on the Haile project. The scope of these services for Haile included design and supply of the process control application software, an ANDRITZ dynamic process simulator for operator training, and ANDRITZ Advanced Control Expert (ACE) ®2 systems for the SAG mill, ball mill, and rougher flotation areas. Since startup, ANDRITZ has continued to provide services for the site, particularly related to PLC and HMI equipment, programming and support, ACE system expansion, and the implementation of Virtual Instrumentation. The implementation of this new Virtual Instrumentation technology at Haile is consistent with Haile goals: increased automation, a change in the role of the operator from interactor to monitor, and improved stability by removing human error.

"A personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler has been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. The sampler uses size selective sampling for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines. This design is based on the premise that diesel exhaust particulate matter is predominantly less than 0.8 um while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 gm. Operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min, the sampler consists of a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver respirable dust cyclone followed by an 0.8 gm cutpoint impactor and an afterfilter. Field evaluations consisted of sampling at 6 different locations in these underground coal mines. Measured aerosol concentration less than and greater than 0.8 um have been compared with a well characterized cascade impactor.Techniques must be developed for measuring the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines due to the health concerns associated with worker exposure to diesel exhaust particulate matter. Diesel exhaust particles are in the respirable size range and have been regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen by NIOSH (1988). Furthermore, a 1988 MSHA advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for assessing worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines, over the past 4 years have measured the size distribution of diesel exhaust particles and mineral dust, both in the laboratory and underground mines (Cantrell, 1987; Cantrell et al., 1987; Cantrell and Rubow. 1988; Marple et al, 1986; Rubow et al., 1988: and Watts et al., 1989). To date, measurements have been made in nine coal mines. Seven mines utilized diesel-powered equipment at the mine face while two used electric-powered equipment. The results of these field tests indicate that mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles can be differentiated on the basis of particle size. The measured particle size distributions have been found to be bimodal with a saddle point at 0.8 um. This has led to the hypothesis that one method for measuring worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles would be to collect size fractionated particle samples separated at 0.8 um with the diesel particles being less than 0.8 um and the mineral dust particles greater than 0.8 um.Aerosol size distribution measurements, using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI), have been conducted in the mine intake air portal, intake entry to the working section, haulageway, and section return entry. The MOUDI is a ten stage cascade impactor with particle cutpoints ranging from 0.1 to 15 um aerodynamic diameter (Marple and Rubow. 1984b; Marple et al., 1989). The sampling flow rate is 30 L/min."

"Ventilation systems are not only an integral part of any underground mine design but are a significant contributor to the mine’s capital and operating costs. The ventilation and cooling design systems presented in this paper were part of the prefeasibility evaluation of an underground platinum mine in South Africa. The mine would ultimately operate at the depth of 1,200 m below surface with a proposed 4 Mtpa production rate. The proposed mining operation is a highly mechanized operation using diesel equipment. Significant daily production rate, large amount of equipment and expansive nature of the operation, contributed to a challenging while flexible ventilation design requirements. This paper presents how to safely and efficiently optimize capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the mine air cooling and refrigeration system through practical ventilation design practices. Successful capital and operational savings by modulating installation and commissioning of refrigeration facilities can influence the economic realization of such systems. The adapted planning and design approach provided a cost-effective advantage while complying with design safety and regulations. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines a prefeasibility evaluation of the heat loads and related cooling system to be employed at the proposed platinum mine. The paper also provides appropriate details for a comprehensive understanding of the applied methodology. The proposed mine will be a trackless underground operation using a combination of mining methods. Initially, ore zones with vertical thicknesses greater than or equal to 18 m will be mined using the long-hole stoping (LHS) method, while thinner ore zones will be mined using mechanized drift-and-fill or drift-and-bench methods; hence, a highly mechanized operation with LHDs, trucks, drill rigs, personnel carriers, etc. is envisioned. Broken rock (ore and waste) will be transported by the means of trucks to the main passes (ore and waste) and collection points. Mining zones identified in the project occur at depths ranging between approximately 700 m to 1,600 m below surface. Primary access to the mine will be via a 1,100 m deep, 10 m diameter production shaft (named Shaft No. 2), three additional shafts will be sunk to provide future ventilation and production support. Three main access levels are established as primary haulage levels and include a series of interconnecting ramps. Additional mining sublevels will be developed as necessary. Figure 1 shows the proposed shaft locations and main access levels in a 3-D elevated view. Mining is performed using highly productive mechanized methods. For this reason, an annual ventilation estimate is based on requirements for mobile equipment (i.e., 0.06 m3/s/kW). The air requirements imposed on the underground operation is further influenced by equipment heat loads, auto compression, and virgin rock temperature, as the main sources of in-mine heat."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. Refuge alternatives typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that the PRVs vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: a modified PVC check valve, an off-the-shelf brass/cast iron butterfly check valve, and a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel pre-fabricated RA and has been adapted for use in built-in-place (BIP) RAs located at one mine. PRVs used in tent style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with 30 CFR regulations. BACKGROUND The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (Miner Act) (1) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the Department of Labor to act on the results of such research as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in H2O), or at a pressure as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (2)."

"Phase change materials are widely used in efficient utilization of energy and new energy technology. Especially, more attention has been paid to composite phase material, which is applied on architectural energy-saving and efficient working fluid. In this paper, stearic acid-silicon dioxide composite material was prepared by sol-gel process from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and stearic acid (SA). The material was investigated by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The FE-SEM results show that 3D-grids of silicon dioxide were formed clearly and SA was encapsulated in the silicon dioxide shell. The FT-IR results show that there were no chemical reactions between silicon dioxide and SA, which is the chemical property of the composite material, is stable. The DSC results show that the composite phase change material has favorable heat capacity. This material is expected to be used to make a cooling working fluid.1. IntroductionEnergy thermal storage becomes increasingly prominent issue in recent years, because thermal storage has been used in many aspects, for example, it can be added into building materials to improve heat conditioning. Another potential application of thermal storage materials is that the intermittent waste heat can be collected and recycled effectively by using the thermal storage facility. Thus, energy thermal storage plays a significant role in conserving available energy and improving its utilization [1]. Energy thermal storage includes sensible heat storage and latent heat storage. The latent heat storage has great heat density with a constant temperature during the phase change process [2-5]. Large quantities of latent heat storage will be absorbed and released when phase change takes place. Based on the former researches, some phase change material (PCM), such as fatty acid and paraffin waxes, has been proved to have high latent heat storage capacity and appropriate thermal properties [5-6]. However, using the PCM in energy storage systems directly is restricted, e.g. some properties of organic PCM, like form-stability and thermal conductivity, are not good enough to use. Meanwhile, almost all the inorganic PCMs are corrosive and most materials may cause sub cooling and segregation [7-9].The other problem is that the leakage when the temperature reaches the phase change point. Therefore, encapsulated composite phase change material (CPCM) emerged in order to solve the problem of leaking out, minimize the sub cooling and prevent phase segregation. [10-13] However, the easy flammability of fatty acid also has hindered the development of PCM. Accordingly, it has been found out that silicon compounds are environmentally friendly promising substitutes for halogen-containing flame retardants. Especially, silsesquioxanes are excellent in the flame retardancy. So CPCM can be encapsulated with SiO2 acting supporting material."

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer gas studies, as well as for studies in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources have previously been demonstrated in mines, but this new work details the development and testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds that can be used in passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed, which are PMCH, PECH and PMCP. The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180 day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in understanding complicated ventilation circuits, flow through gob, and leakage. INTRODUCTION The use tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various research projects being perform with Sulfur Hexafluoride (????6) in the past. Perfluorocarbon tracers (PFTs) however are relatively new compared to ????6, which is proven to be useful in ventilation and air modeling experiments along with other PFTs (Watson, Wilke, Dietz, Heiser, & Kalb, 2007). These liquid tracers are characterized by low background presence in air, inert behavior with other gases, high detectability with a gas chromatograph and low toxicity. A design was proposed called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), which initially introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory to meet those requirements. The PPRV works by allowing the gaseous form of the tracer to diffuse through the permeable silicone stopper and evaporate into the open air on the other side. The PFTs inside the vessels are injected as a liquid but instantly begin to convert to their gaseous phases at room temperature due to high vapor pressures (Zhang, H., Cloud, A.,2006). Previous studies have detailed how release rates change based on plug thickness across various temperatures (Jong et al., 2015), but not on the release rate stability based on temperature across multiple tracers. For use in underground mines passive release sources need to be durable, be simple to manufacture, have customizable and reliable release rates as well as a long operating life. The PPRV vessel provides a steady release of tracer gas that is essential for long term passive release experiments, making it a viable vessel for the PFTs being tested. The PPRV design also allows for vessels to be bundled together to achieve release rates at detectable levels and allows for the capability to run ventilation surveys with multiple tracers simultaneously. The ability to conduct ventilation surveys with multiple tracers using the PPRV bundling design and detection of the PFTs makes testing the tracers and design together a promising potential for complex and long term mine ventilations studies."

"Multi-pass friction stir processing (FSP) was performed to fabricate a new Al-Mg-Graphene nanocomposite. Microstructural developments and distribution of graphene were studied by using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. In the stirred zone (SZ), grain structure was refined down to about 2 µm attributing to the operative dynamic restoration mechanisms and the locking effect of graphene phase. As a result, the yield strength of Al-Mg alloy was improved more than two times due to incorporation of graphene nano-sheets. Also, the indentation hardness resistance of nanocomposite was increased up to ~60%.INTRODUCTION Aluminum-matrix nanocomposites have garnered significant in recent years due to their superior performance and potential advantages for several industrial applications including the automotive and aerospace sectors. Among various reinforcing nano-materials, carbon-based structures featuring sp2 or sp3 hybridization bonds have been found to offer considerably improved physical and mechanical properties. Such carbon allotropes form at micro- and nano-scales including; graphite, carbon nano-tube (CNT), nano-fiber, and graphene. The potential of two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials was introduced in 2004, with the development of graphene as an alternate 2D allotropic form of the carbon structure with a honey-comb lattice at the atomic-scale. It has been shown that it is currently among the strongest materials ever tested with an intrinsic tensile strength of 130 GPa and Young’s modulus of 1000 GPa, and also offers unique thermal and electrical properties.To fabricate metal-matrix nanocomposites reinforced by graphene nano-sheets with typical metallurgical processing techniques, some attempts have been reported in the literature for various solid-state techniques including; hot rolling, mechanical alloying, and friction stir processing (FSP) of pre-cast plates or surface dispersed graphene oxides. The main challenge in those methods was to facilitate the considerable high temperature and pressure for attaining a uniform dispersion of the nano-sheets during the consolidation process. In most cases, significant difficulties have been reported in obtaining a uniform dispersion of graphene within the metal matrix. Among various techniques for production of metal-matrix nanocomposites, FSP has attracted significant attention as a method of surface modification since it was first reported by Mishra et al. In this process, a non-consumable rotating tool is plunged into the surface of material for the aim of microstructure modification. Extreme material plasticity is induced without melting as a result of friction between the tool and workpiece. Frictional heating and severe plastic deformation induced by the FSP process enables metal matrix nanocomposite fabrication by softening the base material and mechanical stirring to disperse the reinforcing nano-materials into the matrix."

"As stated earlier the primary goal of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. While initial work was directed to coal dust the charge to the dust center has been expanded to include diesel particulates and asbestosis, the latter of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace.A major facet of Dust Center research has been the analysis and documentation of comprehensive research protocol and procedures that are appropriate state-of-the-art in the various areas of respirable dust. In addition to definition of standardized research protocols and procedures which would be utilized by center personnel for uniformity and reproducability there is a considerable need for utilizing standardized respirable dusts in experiments with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. This respirable dust needs to be available in large quantities for a wide variety of research uses that include animal and medical experiments. The dust must be free of the lubricating oils and grinding wheel contaminants that are frequently encountered in laboratory generated dusts.The holistic approach to establishing standardized protocols and procedures applicable to the five major research areas of the center is presented in Figure 5.In one hypothesis, range in coal volatility is considered to be a major causal factor in the incidence and severity of pneumoconiosis. Therefore a suite of characterized standard respirable dust samples have been prepared for researchers from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz, limestone (rockdust) and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared.A suite of medical investigations have been developed utilizing small and medium size animals as well as non-human primates in a variety of dust/lung interaction projects which will be discussed in the next section. A number of respirable dust sampling and dust generation methods have been investigated and selected techniques utilized for both in-mine and in-laboratory research investigations. These will also be discussed in more detail later. A wide range of respirable dust size, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been investigated, standardized and documented for use in various research investigations.This interaction and documentation of various respirable dust sample procedures, animal and medical tests, sampling and dust generation methods, plus size, chemical and minerological analysis applied in the five major areas of research investigation have served to create a very favorable synergism and rapid technology transfer in the respirable dust center."

"Large reserves of specularite iron ores have been found all over the world, which is characterized by high total iron grade, low gangues content, as well as low commercial price. However, it has not been widely used in sinter or pellet production due to its inferior sintering and roasting behaviors. It has shown that the proportion of specularite ores was increased as high as 40%~50% and good results was achieveed by using Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP), an innovative agglomeration process invented by Central South University. But the mineralization of specularite is still unknown during composite agglomeration processing. In this paper, the induration characteristic of specularite ore is studied by simulating CAP in laboratory, as well as microstructure analysis of CAP product. The results show that specularite pellet is mainly indurated through recrystallization of Fe2O3, calcium ferrite within high basicity sinters matrix interweaves with the recrystallized Fe2O3 on the surface of the pellet, which forms an integral microstructure, and ensures high strength of CAP product for ironmaking.IntroductionLarge reserves of specularite iron ores have been found all over the world, especially in Minas Gerais of Brazil, Xuanhua city and Anshan city of China, Elba island of Italy, St.Gotthard of Switzerland, Cumberland of Britannic, and so on. The specularite ores have a smooth surface, as well as a good crystallization and dense texture. When specularite is used to produce pellets, the specularite ore grains are difficult to adhere onto green ball due to its poor ballability. Moreover, specularite pellet requires high roasting temperature over 1300°C [1]. When specularite ore is used in sintering, the permeability of sintering bed gets bad and the quality of sinter is diminished. The practice in a few sintering plants finds that the output and strength of sinter decrease with the increase of specularite proportion, and the consumption of coke increases [2-4]. Therefore, the utilization of specularite has been limited. Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is an innovative technology invented by Central South University [5-7]. The process has the following merits: making reasonable utilization of different iron ore resources; improving the quality and output of sinters; manufacturing sinters with low basicity; significantly reducing energy consumption, etc[8-9]. It has been shown that large proportion specularite ores, as high as 40%~50% can be used well by CAP [10], but the mineralization of specularite pellet is still unknown during composite agglomeration processing. In this investigation, the induration characteristics of specularite ore pellets is studied by simulating CAP in laboratory, and the phase composition and microstructure of CAP product are also characterized by using microscope and Leica image analyzer (Germany, Leica DM RXp)."

The first section of this U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes a discussion of the navigational tasks performed by operators of mobile mining equipment, with the focus on the navigational information and guidance techniques required by continuous mining machine operators. Some previous research and attempts in remote and autonomous navigation of continuous mining machines are mentioned. Issues of research in autonomous navigation of various other mobile robots are presented, with attention focused on their applicability to a continuous mining machine navigating in the mining environment. Conclusions are stated on methods of automating the navigational tasks of a continuous mining machine, and a decision to concentrate initial attempts on the tasks of autonomous face navigation is defended. The second section of this report includes a presentation of the Bureau's proposed solution for autonomous face navigation of a continuous mining machine, which includes the employment of a mobile roof support as a reference for guidance in the face area, and a navigational guidance system for the continuous mining machine.

"Research on the control of exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is conducted in five areas; 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The distribution of research findings to the mining industry, to government agencies, and to scientists at other universities is accomplished in several ways.A data bank of respirable dust samples displaying a wide range of characteristics (low volatile, medium volatile, high volatile, silica fireclay, rockdust) has been established by the Center. This data bank is being utilized by Center researchers in a suite of medical, scientific, and engineering tests (FIGURE 26).The Center has honored requests for educational and informational materials from several sources, including MSHA and CANMET who received information on Center generated software and used the Center's expertise in developing a computer program for particle distribution model (DISFIT).The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust has organized two dust conferences on respirable dust, the Coal Mine Dust Conference, held at West VirginiaUniversity, Morgantown, West Virginia from October 8-10, 1984 and Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries: Health Effects, Characterization and Control, an international symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania from October 14-16. 1986. These conferences were co-sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). On August 23-26, 1988, the VIIth International Pnuemoconioses Conference was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While not a sponsor of this conference, researchers in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust had significant participation with sixteen (16) papers presented (see Volume 8 of this series for abstracts and papers). These conferences provided a significant forum for the exchange of ideas on dust research and the interchange of research findings. The proceedings from these conferences are available from NTIS and ACGIH.In sum, significant benefits to mine worker health have resulted and should continue to result from the synergistic scientific, engineering, and medical research in respirable dust (FIGURE 27). As always, an important objective is the rapid dissemination of the results of this research to industry. Video tapes and the Bureau's Technology News series have been a very effective means of USBM technology transfer. "The oxidized and mixed ores are processed by heap leaching. Primary ores with high gold content are floated. In recent years mining of primary ores with the low gold content (up to 4 ppm) has increased. Extraction of gold from these ores by floatation is technologically ineffective. Gravity concentration is ineffective for fine gold particles because of their floatability. The research objective was assessment of the viability of processing gold-bearing ore with combined gravitational and hydrometallurgical methods and testing of recovery of metals from a gold-copper oxidized ore chloride-hypochlorite leaching solution. The advantage of chloride-hypochlorite lixiviant is the low cost of reagents which is produced by the electrochemical synthesis of NaCl solution with the addition of HCl. The adsorption of chlorine compounds by a mineral matrix and its ability to oxidize the refractory ore components and allows for the application of chloride-hypochlorite systems for gold recovery for both oxidized and primary ores. The complexity and problem in using a gold–chloride system is the strong adsorption of gold–chloride complexes onto mineral surfaces, such as goethite, quartz, and alumina. In preliminary testing, gold recovery from gravity circuit gold bearing concentrates processed by agitation leaching in chloride-hypochlorite solution, gold recovery has reached up 82% after 4 hours of leaching. Chloride-hypochlorite leaching of copper-gold oxidized ore with preliminary processing by sulfuric acid provided for 94 % gold recovery to solution. Understanding of ecological hazard of cyanides is the motive power of researches in the field of search non-cyanic chemistries to provide for technologically and economically effective solvents of gold. Soluble compounds of chlorine with a suitable oxidizer are one of the alternatives to cyanides. Basic researches of gold extraction by chloride-hypochlorite solution have shown high rates of gold recovery.INTRODUCTION Because of the continued and growing environmental concern for the use of cyanide for gold processing, interest for the use of non-cyanide lixiviants, especially with halides has renewed recently (Tran et al., 2001; Ferron et al., 2003; Bhaghalha, 2007). Leaching solutions based on halides (chloride, bromide and iodide) are viable alternative to cyanide (Kwang et al., 2008). The major disadvantage of the chlorine–chloride system is the high reactivity of chlorine in reaction with sulfide and gangue carbonate minerals. It is believed that only high grade materials may be treated by chlorine–chloride systems economically (Baghalha, 2007). Another important problem of the application of gold–chloride complex is that it tends to be rather unstable and may re-precipitate upon contact with a reductant, such as sulfidic minerals of ore. It is well known that Au(III)–chloride hydrolysis species are strongly adsorbed by goethite, quartz, and alumina (Machfsky et al., 1991). To minimize adsorption of gold–chloro complexes, it works best to minimize the adsorption time."

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. We outline a first version of an ambitious goal: The world's first horizontal (matrix-independent) generic sampling standard. The specific needs and requirements are overwhelming, as all the world's analytical standards follow strict matrix or material type classification pigeonholes, leading to a plethora of analytical standards. One could rightly expect a similar multiplication regarding sampling standards, yet the singular HORIZONTAL is aimed at being truly generic. Also the existing style of standards writing is cumbersome and partly contradictory. The current work is presently being pursued in CEN and European Union standardisation regimens, for which reason full disclosure and publication is not allowed. Respecting this constraint, we unofficially present selected key issues involved in developing HORIZONTAL: The objective and scope of a horizontal sampling standard is to delineate the minimum set of principles and procedures needed to guarantee documented representative sampling for all types of materials. The horizontal standard is designed for two types of use: 1. auditing/assessing/ improving the reliability of an existing sampling procedure, and 2. design and implementation of a new sampling procedure (new lot type). The principles in this standard are all derived from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), but the standard is far from a mere collection of TOS principles. Representativeness is a characteristic of the sampling process, not of samples themselves. For practical purposes, the horizontal standard follows the fundamental distinction between 'stationary lots' (0-D, 2-D, 3-D lots) and 'dynamic lots' (within TOS aka process sampling - including extended, non-moving 1-D lots). TOS' principles of 'correctness' must never be broken at any stage, lest representativeness is irretrievably lost. The horizontal standard is not written in the mandatory fashion for legally binding matrix-specific standards, eg ISO - for the present overarching purpose a different style had to be developed. The standard must be immediately understandable in full, which merits special demands, eg extensive use of didactic illustrations. HORIZONTAL introduces an all-inclusive sampling variability measure, Relative Sampling Variance (RSV) which is for sampling of stationary lots as variographics is for process sampling - RSV is to be used as a quality criterion for any stationary sampling procedure as applied to a specific heterogeneity (lot/material). The target for this standard is all individuals, companies, organisations and regulatory bodies who are responsible for sampling: technicians, process engineers, laboratory personal, academic and industrial scientists as well as project leaders, technical managers/directors and top managers. Based on current R&D we illustrate the principles promulgated by HORIZONTAL with cases from exploration and mining of minerals commodities, a Finnsh 'Autosampler' at work in the mining context (RSV) as well as sampling equipment for use in the cement and mineral commodities industries. This report summarizes a study conducted by The Service Bureau Corporation for the Bureau of Mines. Evaluations reflected herein are the result of an independent investigation by The Service Bureau Corporation of methane considerations during coal mining. The study is oriented toward a systematic analysis of methane control problems during coal mining. Throughout this study an attempt has been made to ensure considerations consistent with the recently enacted Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. References to reports by The Bureau of Mines and others are made for the purposes of establishing identification between the evaluations contained in this report and on-going research efforts.

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du faciès ""F"" de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Formation de Horn River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bitume solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organo­ clastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renferment que de l'illite et des interstratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéïsation (Th = l00°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées à la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflec­ tance de la collinite (84°C à ll7°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie ther­ mique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gîtes. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion : aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract- The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the biturninous unit at the base of the Horn River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th(l00°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectanœ (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."
