All mines have a finite life and the time comes when the ore is depleted, or it has become uneconomical, or for some other reason which may be peculiar to that particular mine, it must be shut down. The operation at that point of time still has some assets such as mining and milling equipment, workshops, and in the case of a gold mine, an unknown quantity of gold which has been trapped in the treatment plant. Recovering this gold can be done at small cost and can be extremely profitable. Recovery of these hidden assets requires a good knowledge of the treatment plant, i. e. , as say values of heads, tails, and of the products produced; and if mercury for amalgamation was used, where? A careful study of available plant records can be extremely valuable in forming a working plan for adequate recovery. In the following paragraphs the various unit operations and equipment where gold can collect are described and suggestions made for its recovery. Subsequently, a case history will be given for dismantling a gold plant which had a complex flowsheet and which had been in operation for many years. Looking for trapped gold in a crushing section would invariably not be worthwhile since crushing is normally a dry process and there would be few areas where free gold could collect. In the milling section, however, many areas can literally become small gold mines in themselves. Material in the bottoms of grinding mill scoop boxes can be high-grade, and even the scale on the sides of the boxes should be scraped off and collected. Mill liners should be removed and all scale, rust, and residue collected. Residue in the bottoms of rake or spiral classifiers, if they have been used, should be removed as should the scale and rust on the sides of pump sumps, launders, etc. The following procedures should be used to extract gold from these collected materials. All steel (ball scats) should be removed, screened out, and reserved. Fine material should be placed in an amalgam barrel, water added and ground with the amalgamation tailings being sampled and assayed. If high-grade, tails should be reserved; if not, discarded. The coarse material that was screened out should be placed in a heap, regularly sprayed with water and allowed to rust. After several months this material should be screened again and the fines amalgamated.

Solid Energy's project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholders' risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. "A well-performing solvent-extraction circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure consistent operation, a good understanding of the circuit’s operation and an ability to rapidly troubleshoot key parameters is required. This paper briefly discusses the modeling of solventextraction circuits. The paper then goes on to discuss the determination of key performance parameters from plant data and comparing these with the circuit models to quantify circuit performance. The identification and troubleshooting of circuit issues is presented with a worked example. INTRODUCTIONA well-performing solvent-extraction (SX) circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure a consistent, high-quality operation, a good understanding of the circuit performance is required. Evaluating the performance of an SX circuit is an extensive topic. The objective of this paper is to focus on the evaluation that the metallurgist should be performing on a regular basis using flow and concentration data. This paper does not cover important topics, such as crud management, phase continuity, or organic management. Some basic SX modeling concepts are first be presented. The calculation of the parameters is then presented with a brief discussion and recommended ranges (where applicable). A worked example is used to provide a basis for further discussion on the evaluation of the calculated parameters and use of data collected.BASIC SOLVENT-EXTRACTION MODELING CONCEPTSThis section presents the basic modeling concepts used in SX simulation packages currently available. SX reagent suppliers have invested significant time and effort into collecting data on the performance of their reagents under different conditions. Based on these data, suppliers have developed packages which they normally make available to their clients for free. These are typically used for process design and plant optimization studies. For example, BASF developed ISOCALCTM and CYTEC Industries developed MINCHEM® and MEUMTM.Chemistry of Copper Solvent ExtractionLiquid–liquid extraction involves the selective transfer of a substance between two immiscible liquid phases by controlling the relative solubility in each phase. In the case of copper SX, the exchange is typically achieved by an oxime-based chelating mechanism. In particular, mixtures of aldoxime and ketoxime are normally used in conjunction with modifiers. More detail on this extensive topic can be found in Schlesinger et al. (2011)."

Included in the general category of clays is a large and varied assemblage of nonmetallic silicate minerals which characteristically occur as fine-grained particles having flaky, sheetlike, or rod-shaped form. Most, though not all, are hydrous aluminum silicates. Amount and kind of impurities vary greatly, and these strongly influence the uses of the various clay types. Clays occur in a wide range of geological situations: as bedded sedimentary deposits composed of the weathering products of feldspar and other minerals; as alteration products of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks weathered or hydrothermally altered in place; and, to a more limited extent, as hydrothermally introduced materials. TYPES AND MARKETS On the basis of chemical composition and crystal structure, two major groups of clay minerals recognized are the "kandites" or kaolin group, and the "smectites" or montmorillonite group. Another major type is illite, particularly important as a constituent of shales. Two additional mineral species having economic importance are attapulgite (palygorskite) and sepiolite. For present purposes, however, a classification based on utilization is more appropriate. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recognizes six types of clay: kaolin, ball clay, fire clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and miscellaneous clay. Kaolin The kaolin group of minerals consists of the mineral species kaolinite, halloysite (metahalloysite), dickite, and nacrite, although the latter two are not being produced commercially. Kaolin, also called china clay, is a high-purity white material. Perhaps it is best known as a principal ingredient in the manufacture of chinaware, porcelain, and other high-quality ceramic products. However, by the mid-1970s very close to 50% of the kaolin produced in the United States was going to the paper industry for use as a filler and coating material. Manufacture of refractories uses about 12% of U.S. production. Kaolin is also used in plastics, in the rubber industry as a filler in footwear, electrical cable, and similar products, and as a conditioner of rubber for automobile tires to add strength and abrasion resistance. Smaller amounts are used in printing ink, paint, and adhesives; as insecticide carriers; in the production of catalysts for the petroleum refining industry; and in many other industrial and commercial applications. Production and use of kaolin in the United States doubled in the ten years from 1946 to 1956, and doubled again by 1966. Growth continues at a rate of about 7 % per annum.

"For many years the training of mill operators was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. Recognizing the needs and benefits of better training some companies, and even some provinces through legislation, have moved to ensure that a formalized training program exists in the plants. These programs tend to focus on basic safety and operations. Much remains to be done. With the more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, and the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, operator training has become a critical issue. This paper briefly examines the evolution of training programs, provides some measure of their effectiveness, and explores some recent developments which could have a very significant impact on the industry.PreambleOne can draw an analogy between operator training and the mechanical support of production equipment. When we buy a piece of process equipment it is critical that the mechanical installation be done properly to ensure that the device will operate at peak performance on start-up. Once the equipment is running, some form of preventive maintenance is required to ensure continued efficient operation. The operators and the equipment are both elements of the processing system, yet the former do not seem to get the same ""start-up"" or ""operating"" support. Are they not seen as critical to efficient operation? Why is this so? What impact does it have? How can we improve?These are all very logical and important questions, although the answers are not nearly so obvious. In the mineral processing industry, progress in operator training over the past thirty years has been limited and quite variable. To address the perceived need for a more coherent and consistent approach, some provinces have moved to incorporate basic training requirements in their legislation. Some plants have gone a few steps further by building integrated training programs into their operating culture. One conclusion which can be easily reached is that there are no standards, and that the range of training activity is great. In other words, a flotation operator is not a flotation operator is not a flotation operator. Their knowledge and skills are very much a function of training and experience, which are clearly corporate and site specific."

In a zirconium {1121} twins tend to have coherelzt boundaries and thus do not usually taper to a point when they intersect a grain boundary. Under the proper conditions, a (1121) twin may deform a boundary in such a manner as to clearly rcveal the twinning shear. Measurements of these grain-bounrlary rotatzons yield a value of 0.63 for the (1151) twinning shear. The magnitude of the observed shear and its shear sense are in excellent agreement with the assumption that the second undis-torted plme (K2) for this form of twinning is the basal plane (0002). The present value of the tzvinninz shear, which is approximately three limes larger than Rapperport&apos;s value? is in excellent agreement with reported results of Sokuskii and Prolsenko.5 RECENTLY westlake&apos; reported a study of the twinning modes of zirconium based on ~ap~er~ort&apos;s2 values for the twinning elements. He observed that two of the modes, (1012) and {1122), can be explained by relatively simple dislocation models. A workable model for (1121) twinning, however, proved to be very complex and questionable. Because Rapperport&apos;s second undistorted plane, (K2), for (1121) twinning has large indices, {ll2l6), it is possible that the difficulty in defining a model for (1121) twinning lies in an incorrect value for K2. A measurement of this twinning element has therefore been made, using a method based on observations of the shear displacement of grain boundaries at positions where they are intersected by (1121) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The zirconium specimens were deformed in tension on an Instron machine either at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77ºK), or prestrained at liquid nitrogen temperature and then further deformed at room temperature. Straining at 77°K was employed in order to nucleate (1 121) twins in large numbers, since simple ropm-temperature tensile deformation favors (1012) twinning. Specimens were machined from 1/2-in.-thick plate. The material was arc-melted sponge zirconium annealed to an ASTM grain size 4 and containing, in parts per million, 380 Fe, 880 0, <40 Hf, 32 N, and < 5 H. The specimen gage length and diameter were 1.25 and 0.130 in., respectively. To insure a gage section initially free of twins, the last 60 thousandths of the specimen diameter was removed by acid machining.

During the late-1980s crawler-mounted crusher units established their position in the aggregates industry. Between 1986 and 1994 about 700 units were delivered to customers all over the world for surface operations, mainly in Scandinavia and central Europe. The crawler-mounted units are popular among smaller crushing operators because they are versatile and easy to move between sites. In large quarries the greatest benefit is obtained by combining a primary crawler-mounted crusher unit with mobile belt conveyors which eliminates the need for costly haulage by dump truck. Savings of up to 40 per cent in production costs prior to secondary crushing have been achieved. Today the environmental aspect in quarrying is assuming ever greater importance. Besides being costly the dump trucks are also the major source of dust and exhaust fumes within a quarry. A complete face crushing system consisting of a crawler-mounted crusher unit and mobile belt conveyors can be electrically driven and can be equipped with dust encapsulation and dust collectors. A mobile crushing unit is not a new idea. From the mid-1950s onwards the mobile and self-propelled units have been built equipped with crawlers, tyres or walking mechanisms, with weights usually of 500-1000 t. Due to their massive size these unit are not mobile in the same way as the today&apos;s mobile units. It is not feasible to move them more than a few times a year unlike today&apos;s fully mobile units which are often relocated once an hour. This means that the massive units can not continuously follow the production face and their loading always requires a certain amount of haulage. Today the mining industry is facing new challenges. With low mineral prices and high labour costs, increasing productivity is essential for survival. New standards are also being set for the labour safety and the environment. Large research programs have been launched to meet these challenges. However, technology which can partly solve these problems already exist and is only waiting to be introduced into underground applications as well - the mobile crushing unit followed by belt conveying. As in surface operations the elimination of truck haulage also brings considerable savings in operating costs in underground mines and reduces the amount of dust and exhaust gases generated. An additional benefit especially in underground applications is improved safety. In an underground mine most accidents are caused by moving vehicles.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator&apos;s awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." Big Bell Mine started experiencing relatively large mining related seismic events, and accompanying rockbursts, from February 1999. Twelve rockbursts damaged access development from February 1999 to June 2000, with severe damage extending for up to 100 m along footwall drives. Five seismic events associated with the rockbursts were recorded by the AGSO, measuring 1.9, 2.2, 1.7, 2.4 and 2.2 on the Richter scale. These events affected 485 and 460 footwall drives in August and November 1999 and 535 footwall drive in June 2000 (drive level nomenclature is equivalent to the depth below surface and RL). After the third event (July 1999) it was apparent that the seismicity was not a once-off phenomenon. This (sudden) onset of seismicity required management to implement a series of precautionary measures:to ensure the safety of the workforce, to maintain continuity of production, and to reduce rockburst damage rehabilitation. The measures included extended re-entry periods and exclusion zones in high-risk areas, improved rockburst resistant support systems in areas prone to damaging seismic activity and improved support systems in areas prone to shakedown damage. A full-scale minewide ISS seismic system was ordered in October 1999 and commissioned in February 2000. A portable eight-channel CSIR-Miningtek system was installed at short notice as an interim measure in August 1999. This CSIR system covered the northern producing stopes, where the majority of the rockbursts had occurred. The objective of the seismic monitoring was to monitor relative activity and to determine trends with regards to time and location. MAP3D numerical modelling was used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and various combinations of stress components to assess the relative seismic risk in both current and proposed working areas. This information is used to determine where and at what stage in the mining cycle the rockburst resistant support is required. Analysis of the seismicity has determined two distinct modes of seismicity û small-scale localised, high frequency events in high stress areas and larger events related to shear along previously intact foliation surfaces. This paper includes a summary of the seismic history, seismic data analysis, support system design, mine design adjustments and management action to minimise the effects of seismic activity at Big Bell Mine.

Research was conducted at a western coal mine on a wide variety of underground mining vehicles to develop testing procedures for portable instrumentation monitoring of tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon dioxide (CO2) carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). DPM was measured using the Emissions Measurement Appa¬ratus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU), and an ECOM-KL five-gas analyzer was used to measure gaseous tailpipe concentrations. Baseline concentrations of the tailpipe pollutants were measured using vehicle systems to load the engine. Concentrations before and after the water scrubber were measured and water scrubber efficiencies were estimated by calculation. Field measurement procedures were established. Heavy-duty vehicles with automatic transmissions were loaded using the torque converter to stall the engine. Consistent engine loading for light-duty vehicles with manual transmissions involved placing the transmission in neutral and adjusting the throttle to maintain a constant engine speed of 2,500 rpm. Tailpipe CO2 concentrations for Caterpillar 3306 and 3304 engines were compared to laboratory CO2 data from Caterpillar and MSHA to help determine if engine settings were correctly adjusted for operation at high altitudes. (Perfect agreement between the mine vehicle tailpipe and laboratory measurements would not be expected because of the differences in the test conditions.) DPM concentrations for light-duty vehicles ranged from about 20 to 160 mg/m3, and one light-duty vehicle averaged near 1,000 mg/m3. DPM concentrations for heavy-duty vehicles ranged from about 55 to 200 mg/m3. Widely ranging DPM concentrations for a particular vehicle type reflect the state of maintenance, fuel rate settings and different engine loading procedures as well as differences between samples collected upstream and downstream of the waterscrubber. The calculated DPM removal efficiencies due to the water scrubber varied considerably between vehicles, ranging from 13% to 51%. Calculations indicate that, under worst-case conditions, very large reductions in DPM may be required to meet the proposed DPM PEL of 0.15 mg/m3, even on vehicles with water scrubbers. In-mine ambient air studies, which are needed to actually measure the impact of the tailpipe concentrations on the work environment and the effect of mine ventilation on the dilution of DPM were not done in this first set of tests.

Anode or fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anode. Part of this process purifies liquid copper by reducing its dissolved oxygen with a natural gas-steam mixture. Until now there have been no transient models of this process coupling the injected gas jet mass transport with its chemical reactions. A transient, 1D flow, chemical reaction model was made to estimate the time-dependent behavior of anode copper composition, soot formation, and the transient gas jet composition along its height. Model estimates were made for reduction rate, soot emission rate, and exergy loss and destruction distributions for two melt temperatures and a range of steam addition rates. It was found that increases to melt temperature and steam addition rate increased reduction rate and decreased soot emission, while having little effect on exergetic performance. Estimates for reduction histories were compared to industrial data. INTRODUCTION Anode/fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is essential for removing dissolved gases which cause porosity in cast anodes. Despite its significance, the open literature appears devoid of any transient models of the entire process; furthermore, there are very little published process data with which to validate any models made. This dual dearth of modelling work and process data inhibits studies of the tradeoffs between process and performance changes, desirable for decreasing reduction time and soot formation as well as quantifying changes in the exergy losses and destructions of the process. This work introduces a reduced-order, transient model of reduction during fire refining, examines performance trends with operating conditions, and compares model estimates with industrial data. Overview of anode refining The purpose of anode refining is to produce liquid copper which can be cast with minimal gas porosity, which disrupts the downstream electrorefining process. Dissolved sulfur is removed first, then oxygen, by reactions with different injected gases. The removal of oxygen (the reduction step) is the subject of this proceeding and is effected by the bubbling of natural gas, typically mixed with steam, through the melt from tuyeres. A typical refining run reduces dissolved oxygen from 3000 ppm to 300 ppm in 2–3 hours (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). The refined copper is then cast as anodes. INTRODUCTION Whereas the design of rock slopes in open-pit mines is done largely by mining engineers and geologists, the design of slopes in overburden at this point in time is a problem for which civil engineers or geotechnical engineers are best prepared to deal. The reasons for this situation are to be found in the educational curricula and the technical journals of the two groups, where soil mechanics has received little attention by mining engineers and geologists, and rock mechanics has similarly received little attention by civil engineers. In ten years&apos; time this paper will hopefully be considered by young mining engineers to be a repeat of the material that they studied at university. However, even in ten years time I believe that the civil (or geotechnical) engineers will be extensively used as consultants on overburden- slope problems of open pit mines because mining companies will find this more expedient than maintaining their own geotechnical staff, special field equipment and special testing laboratories. For this reason, the purpose of this paper is not to condense several university soil mechanics courses into a twenty-page text for mining engineers and geologists. Rather, the purpose of the paper is to offer a general explanation of various factors affecting slope stability so that mining engineers and geologists will have a better understanding of the behaviour of overburden soils in slopes. A great deal has been written in soil mechanics literature on the subject of slope stability. No attempt will be made to reference all this material but rather only a selected number of references will be cited. Excellent general treatments of the subject of stability of overburden slopes are available (1,2,3,4). Further information of a more specialized nature is to be found in such publications as the Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Geotechnique (printed by the Institution of Civil Engineers, England), Canadian Geotechnical Journal, and the proceedings of the conferences of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. FACTORS INFLUENCING SLOPE STABILITY There are two general scales of slope-stability problems, gross stability and local stability. Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better understanding of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling— to the flotation operator—is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given—"conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. "Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill products prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral sur- faces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure therefrom." As 0. C. Ralston has stated? ... we are still faced with the fact that some mineral particles are water-avid, others air-avid, and that by properly modifying them they may be enhanced or diminished in desirable or undesirable avidity. Coatings on minerals must still be assumed to fall into three classes: (1) a coating of immiscible oil, (2) a layer of adsorbed substance, (3) a chemically produced coating. It is submitted that the process of preparing mineral surfaces for subsequent flotation treatment should take into consideration physical as well as chemical means for altering the normal flotation response of the mineral surfaces. A more descriptive word than "conditioning" is needed to designate broadly these procedures. The minerals in many ores cannot be made to respond in a normal manner to usual methods of "conditioning" with selectivity modifying reagents, until they have been cleansed, or interfering slimes and soluble salts have been removed from the ore. Therefore, it appears important to include under the general subject of "conditioning" a discussion of the purposes, methods used, and some of the advantages of these pretreatment steps. This is dealt with under the subject heading " Initial Treatment of Mineral Surfaces and Ore Pulps." Under this broader interpretation, the methods employed for treating mineral surfaces to alter their flotation characteristics may be divided into three general classes: 1. Physical methods.

Blast fragmentation size distribution and thus blast design have been found to have a direct impact on the load and haul cycle through excavator dig time and bucket payload. Previous studies have demonstrated that by reducing the excavator dig time and increasing bucket payload, significant improvements can be made in both productivity and unit cost. Simulation work reported in the literature indicates that a 20 per cent improvement in dig time may result in only a three per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. At the same time, a ten per cent improvement in bucket payload will directly translate to a ten per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. Based upon these findings, extensive laboratory and field work have been undertaken in the past to correlate blast fragmentation distribution to bucket payload. In contrast, the literature reports limited studies quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on excavator dig time. Field work was conducted at Placer Dome Asia PacificÆs Granny Smith Mine (Wallaby Pit) in Western Australia, concentrating on quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on the dig time of a Liebherr 994 hydraulic excavator (shovel attachment with 14 m3 bucket). Fragmentation was assessed for each truck load of material using the Split Desktop system, while the excavator cycle analysis was conducted manually. Measured fragmentation P80 (fragment size at which 80 per cent of material passes) values ranged from 200 mm to 1200 mm. The field study investigated the impact of various fragmentation parameters (P20, P50, P80, cumulative per cent passing 250 mm size fraction, and uniformity index) on the average and total dig times. The results indicate that the fragmentation P80 provides the best correlation to average dig time (total dig time divided by the number of bucket passes to load a truck). The total dig time was found to be dependant upon the fragmentation P80 and the number of bucket passes to fill a truck. Monte Carlo simulation results, based upon these relationships, indicate a 26 per cent improvement in average dig time and a 12 per cent to 46 per cent improvement in total dig time (bucket passes ranging from 4 to 8), with a change in fragmentation P80 from 600 mm to 200 mm.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).&apos;O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

Densities of melts of the iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum hubble pressure method in the composition range O to 37 wt pct SiOz and the temperature range 1255 to 1410C. The constitution of the melts is discussed and it is postulated that the structure changes from a dislribution of iron ions in an oxygen ion network at pure "FeO" to a distribution. of iron ions in a network of silicate tetrahedra at the orthosilicate composition. ISD The system iron oxide-silica is an important one metallurgically because it forms the basis of several complex slag systems in use for industrial smelting and refining processes. In recent years considerable work has been done on liquids of this system but there are still many points of difference among workers using different experimental techniques and theoretical approaches. Phase equilibria/"3 activity,4-6 electrical conductivity,&apos; current efficiency,&apos; transference number,8 viscosity,9 surface tension,&apos;&apos; and density" measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem. Measurement of density is one procedure which is directly indicative of liquid structure since any deviation from ideality must be a result of structural interactions. Liquids of the iron oxide-silica system are of special interest because this is one of the few metal oxide-silica systems on which measurements can be carried out conveniently over the entire composition range from pure oxide to silica saturation. This includes the range of high basicity which has received relatively little attention in other systems. Although one investigation of density in this system has previously been undertaken," the results seem of sufficient importance to warrant the independent redeter-mination reported here.

What is the nature of this opportunity? What makes it look unsurmountable?New Games: New RulesLawyers have described some of the new rules companies are facing and there is a new game being played; a game characterized by unique challenges.Take two, for example: • The ecological problems to be faced are Mother Nature&apos;s business, the political solutions required are our business. This combination of natural problems and political solutions requires the development of new management mechanisms, to bridge the gaps among us, as individuals, as professions, as interest groups and so on; indeed, even as countries;• and gaps there are : about as many gaps as the people involved : many of them with new and changing expectations, often mutually exclusive and not negotiable.The challenge of these relationships and communications among so many different interests is one of the keys to effective environmental management.Like any game, this one has rules and they are new, too. These rules are evident not just in new legislation - tough legislation with draconian penalties; they are also evident in new and exacting business policies, value driven and just as unforgiving of poor performance. Senior management of many companies are speaking about the role of enlightened corporate policies and how important it is for everyone involved that these policies drive and reflect business practices. Absence of day to- day behaviour which evidences the words in action, the policy on the wall of a corporate office or published in an Annual Report is first evidence for the prosecution , not the defence.The challenge of practical policies is another key to effective environmental management.This is a new game, with new rules: the challenge of change."

I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. &apos;The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. To the-Salt Lake City Conference on Reverberatory Smelting Practice: Through the courtesy of Mr. Scott Turner, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mr. G. L. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and&apos; directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. J. R. Lane (Metals Research Laboratory, Washington)—A new type of deformation called "kinking" has recently been described. Is there any relation between the "rumpling" described in this paper and "kinking?" D. C. Jillson (author&apos;s reply)—Both are manifestations of bending about [210] axis. The difference is one of degree. W. C. Ellis (Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York) —Some observations of deformation in zinc recorded in this paper may be applicable generally to flow in metals. One of these, deformation in torsion without evidence of slip or twinning in the early stages and with startling ease, when the twist is about the hexagonal axis, adds another method of flow to the presently increasing list of mechanisms. This illustrates again that a crystal will utilize any realizable process to flow and relieve stress. The process is not necessarily classical directional slip—& this case, it is rotational slip. The question naturally occurs: Will face-centered cubic metas stressed by twisting about an octahedral axis flow in a similar manner by rotation on an octahedral plane? I would like to ask Dr. Jillson if he has made any experiments or knows of any experiments of this type on face-centered cubic metals? Face-centered cubic metals possibly would behave differently from zinc, since, for one thing, the stacking sequence is different for the two structures. The results of such experiments, however, would be instructive in providing more information about deformation processes. D. C. Jillson—Dr. Roy E. Swift, working in the Hammond Laboratory at Yale, performed a twist test on a single crystal of brass. The work has not been published, and I do not know the crystallographic direction of the axis of the specimen used.
