In essence, it exists to provide a basis for communication between the Department, industry. Aboriginal organisations and Traditional Owners. The paper outlines the various ways in which this is accomplished including the preparation of detriment submissions for pending land claim hearings, the use of promotional material to support access to Aboriginal Land for NTGS Mapping Programs and field work, and advice/assistance on exploration and mining issues.

PALLADIUM has been used for jewelry for many years, particularly in conjunction with gold. This use increased in amount during the war, as palladium and gold were only moderately used for war purposes while demands for platinum and some of the other members of the platinum group were so great that their use in jewelry was prohibited. Palladium hardened with a small percentage of ruthenium has the necessary technical properties and appearance for good jewelry, and it is sufficiently rare to be desirable for luxury items-at least 100 times as rare as gold. Although both visual and spectrophotometric examination demonstrated that the color of palladium was almost the same as that of platinum, a few jewelers found the surface of palladium, even after some polishing, rather dark in areas that had been repeatedly heated during the soldering necessary to assemble certain types of handmade ornaments. This phenomenon is not to be confused with the thin, bluish oxide film that can be produced by heating in air over the range 400° to 800°C., as that film is easily reduced by dipping in warm 5 per cent formic acid or in warm methanol. It was suspected that the difficulty arose from heating in atmospheres that were alternately oxidizing and reducing, as Wise and Vines1 had found that this opened the grain boundaries of palladium and palladium-silver alloys in the same manner as in pure silver, as reported by Martin and Parker.2 This damage is caused by the reaction between oxygen in solid solution in the metal, acquired when heated under oxidizing conditions, and hydrogen diffusing in from subsequent heating under reducing conditions; the steam cannot diffuse out and therefore builds up sufficient pressure to disrupt the metal near the surface. Copper and various other metals can be damaged similarly, but platinum is nearly immune; therefore the problem was new to the platinum jeweler. Sulphur in the fuel gas also can cause trouble but did not appear to be dominant in the present instance. Metallographic examination of both pure palladium and ruthenium-palladium showed that the usual torch using oxygen and city gas as normally operated did in fact cause the surface and subsurface damage that had been observed, and also disclosed that a reducing flame caused more damage than an oxidizing flame and was very damaging even in the absence of any intentional swing in atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing (Fig. 7); besides the surface damage, there was serious loss of ductility. A full explanation of the mechanism of attack is not evident at the moment, but may be allied to the attack that occurs on heating catalytically active metals in nonequilibrium atmospheres.

"Niobec has been using vibrating screens and screw classifiers as a double stage classification in its grinding circuit since the very beginning of its operation in St-Honoré. Most of the other mineral processing plants around the world uses cyclones as the classification device in their grinding circuit. The difference between these two methods are well known in terms of capital cost and grinding efficiency but the differences in terms of the impact on the downstream processing stages are a lot harder to predict and are case specific. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec decided to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their impact on the recovery of the downstream processing stages as well as the operating cost of the mill. We switched between cyclones and screens for 8 month in 2013 and early 2014 and we are now operating only with cyclones since march 2014.INTRODUCTIONThe Niobec mine and concentrator were built in the mid 70’s and at that time, the mill was processing 1 500 tons per day. Over the years, many expansion projects have brought the plant to 7 000 tons per day. Throughout the initial concentrator design and commissioning, screens have been chosen over cyclones because of their higher classification efficiency which is known to reduce variability and limit the fine generation especially due to a high undersize classification efficiency. Just like many other plants, fine particle generation is a major problem at Niobec because of its negative effect on downstream processing stages. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec’s engineering team decided, 35 years later, to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their actual impact on the final recovery and the operating cost of the mill.The grinding circuit is separated in two lines which will be called Circuit #1 and Circuit #2 along this paper. Circuit #1 is, as you can see in Figure 1, composed of a rod mill and two parallel ball mills in closed circuit with screens and screw classifiers. The screens oversize are sent to the screw classifiers while the undersize are sent to the next processing stage. The screw classifiers overflow are both sent back to the pump box while their oversize streams return in their corresponding ball mills for further grinding. Circuit #2 is, as you can see in Figure 1, quite the same as Circuit #1 except it has only one set of screw classifier and ball mill. Figure 1 also shows the modification in arrangement each circuits went through to integrate the new cyclones. One of the ball mills in Circuit #1 now appears dotted because it can still be used but is not now"

Equilibrium H2S/4 ratios were determined as functions of temperatunz and composition in a hydrogen recirculation apparatus. A high-temperature solid solution exists in the range two-phase regionfrom TiS 1.96, to TiS1.30, Various thermodynamic quantities were calculated from the data. COMPOUNDS in the titanium -sulfur system have not receiyed much attention in the past, probably because they do not occur naturally in the earth's crust. However, titanium-sulfur compounds have been used in various metallurgical processes. The U.S. Bureau of klines' studied the formation of ti- tanium-sulfide mattes from charges composed of rutile, pyrite, and carbon, with the resulting sulfide matte being chlorinated to form titanium tetrachlo-ride. Fishel, Roe, and Ellis' investigated the de-sulfurizing action of titanium in steels, and Schwarz and Koster studied the preparation of metallic titanium from the sulfide using aluminum and magnesium reduction. The thermodynamic properties of some of the compounds present in the titanium-sulfur system may prove to be of some use in the consideration of future processes using these sulfides, and would

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

The subject of the supply and the quality of the iron-ore and coke of this State has suffered exaggeration and misrepresentation in both directions. Unsophisticated persons have made extraordinary reports of quality and richness, which could not be supported by facts; while, on the other hand, experts have selected inferior samples, and upon the average of these, which was not by any means the average known to our practice, have based comparisons favorable to other States. Our furnace-records give much better testimony as to the run of our ores, the calorific duty of our coke, and the burden and blast which it will bear. Some of them show poorer ore-mixtures than others; but it is safe to say that the Birmingham furnaces produce from 40 to 60 per cent.. of iron from a mixture of equal parts of the leanest and the richest ores, as classified in large quantities. And certain performances on record here, while they do not represent the regular or average practice, ma: be fairly urged as proof of excellence of raw material, since they would otherwise have been impossible, even as exceptional achievements. The contribution of minerals to the growth and development of the United States is best demonstrated by the uses which have evolved during the past two centures. During pre-Revolutionary days the colonies were essentially agricultural in character, producing cotton, tobacco, rice, indigo, grains and flour, fish, livestock, dairy products, and timber. Shipbuilding was the major manufacturing industry. In 1763, the total value of exports for Virginia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts was £2,722,000, of which £55,000, or 2 percent, was for "copper ore, and iron in pigs" (3)1 and £49,000 was for 21,000 barrels or hogsheads of "pot-ash." The value of 75 ships built for sale in 1763 by the colonies was £61,500.

The use of paste technology for underground cemented backfill is widely accepted in the mining industry today as a potentially cost effective alternative to cemented rock and hydraulic slurry fill. While paste backfill is not the appropriate backfilling method for all mines, there are presently 23 operating tailings paste backfill plants throughout the world. This new technology has gained increasing acceptance as a backfill method over the last decade and its use is now expanding into the surface disposal of tailings using the stacked, thickened tailings disposal concept. Over the next 18 months there will be ten new paste plants commissioned in the world. Five of these ten plants will be used exclusively for surface tailings disposal or a combination of surface disposal and underground backfill production. The thickened tailings disposal concept, developed by Dr. Eli Robinsky in the early 1970's, has been in use for decades at several mine sites throughout the world (Kidd Creek Mine site in Northern Ontario), but always utilizing non segregating high density tailings slurry central discharge, stacked tailings placement. With the use of a higher solids content paste, the typical 2-degree beach angle can be increased to ten degrees or more with no runoff water and minimal shrinkage crack development through desiccation. This paper presents the design of the first mine to implement true surface paste disposal, Barrick Gold Corp's Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. The paste system will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2001 allowing performance data to be collected to define the full potential of paste technology for surface tailings disposal.

"Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

The effect of porosity on mechanical behavior of rock has been studied in the past using both experimental and numerical techniques. One important aspect of this study that has not received much attention is the role of void size and distribution on the mechanical behavior of rock. In this study, the CA2 computer program that is a hybrid discrete-finite element program for two-dimensional simulation of geomaterials is used. Numerical specimens with different macro-void sizes are loaded uniaxially. The Young?s modulus, Poisson?s ratio, uniaxial strength and crack initiation stress are studied. The numerical results are compared with the database of experimental tests on Plaster of Paris specimens containing Styrofoam spheres with different void sizes and porosities. It is shown that the macro void spatial distribution is partly responsible for the scatter of the experimental data. It is also shown that not-only the porosity but also the pore size can affect the deformability, crack initiation stress and rock strength.

The effect of pressure on the extension of the ? loop in the FeSi system has been determined by means of metallogvaphic studies and hardness measurements performed on a series of high-purity Fe-Si alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 at. pct Si, respectively. These mensurements, performed at 42 kbar and temperatures up to 1200oC, indicate that the ? loop is expanded to about 10 at. pct Si at 42 kbar as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 at. pct Si at 1 atm. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yields satisfnctory results. DURING the past few years, several studies have been performed in our laboratory1-' in order to determine the effect of high pressure on phase equilibrium in pure iron and iron-base alloys. The purpose of these studies has been to elucidate the effects of high pressure experimentally and to compare the observed results with predicted pressure effects derived on the basis of known thermody-namic and volumetric data at 1 atm. These studies have included work on pure iron2,5,7 as well as Fe-Ni,1,5 Fe-cr,l,5 and Fe-c4-6 alloys. In addition, Tanner and Kulin3 have reported results of pressure studies on two Fe-Si alloys containing 2.0 and 6.25 at. pct Si. At the time of this latter study, no detailed information was available concerning the difference in volume between the a (bcc) and ? (fcc) phases in the Fe-Si system as a function of silicon content. In order to compare their observations with calculated pressure shifts, Tanner and Kulin were forced to assume that silicon had no effect on the difference in volume between a and ? iron. The resulting discrepancy between their calculation of the a/? phase boundary at 42 kbar and the observed results led them to the conclusion that silicon additions probably decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. Recently: Cockett and Davis8,9 have reported de- tailed studies of the lattice parameters of a series of Fe-Si alloys at temperatures ranging from 20" to 1150°C. These measurements, performed on alloys in the bcc and fcc range, show that silicon does indeed decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. By correcting the calculations of Tanner and Kulin in line with the observed effect of silicon they were able to show improved agreement between computed and observed pressure shifts.' The present measurements were undertaken to provide additional corroboration of this effect, by extending the range of composition, in addition to exploring a situation where large extensions of a ? loop could result in impingement of the ? field with an ordered bcc phase (based on Feo.75Sio.25). I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS The alloys investigated were obtained from Dr. F. Kayser of M.I.T. They were prepared at the Ford Scientific Laboratory by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and high-purity silicon. The melts were poured under an argon atmosphere into hot-topped steel molds. Subsequently the ingots were hot-worked down to 1/2-in.-diam rods. Three alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 pct Si were studied. Carbon, regarded as the principal impurity, analyzed at, or below, 0.001 wt pct for all of the alloys. Prior to pressure-temperature treatment, the rod was annealed for 24 hr in vacuum at 1000°C, water-quenched, and subsequently machined into 0.100-in.-diam by 0.100-in.-long specimens. Subsequent to machining, the specimens were again annealed and then examined metallographically. They were found to exhibit a clear coarse-grained ferrite similar to Figs. 10 and 110 of Ref. 1 and Fig. 2 of Ref. 3. Subsequently, specimens of each alloy were equilibrated at 42 kbar at various temperatures in supported piston apparatus.1,3,4,6 Three specimens, one of each alloy, were wrapped in platinum and exposed simultaneously. The pressure-temperature cycle consisted of increasing the pressure from ambient to 42 kbar at 25oC, heating rapidly to the desired temperature, holding for 15 min, and quenching to 100°C, followed by slower cooling to 25°C and pressure release. Polycrystalline tensile specimens of various Zr-0-H alloys have been tested at 298°, 178°, and 77°K. Solute oxygen and hydride precipitates in quenched alloys made individual contributions to the yield strength at 0.2 pct strain which combined to produce a resultant strength increment, a,., Ductility changes which were ohserved can he interpreted in terms of the various oxygen and hydrogen concentrations, testing tem -peratures, and dispositions of the hydride. ADDITIONS of oxygen in solid solution were known to increase the yield and tensile strengths of polycrystalline zirconium as early as 1951.' More recently, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for prism slip in zirconium single crystals was also shown to be affected by the solute oxygen impurity.' This latter work also demonstrated that large increments of strength could be contributed by the finely dispersed zirconium hydride precipitates that are present in quenched Zr-H alloys.3 It was concluded that the combined strengthening due to alloying could be expressed by where to is the increase in the CRSS due to solute oxygen alone and TH is the increase due to finely dispersed hydride precipitates. Eq. [I] is analogous to one used to express the combined strengthening effects of work hardening and neutron radiation damage.4 Eq. [1] was verified only indirectly and for only small amounts of the impurities—up to 0.14 at. pct 0 and 0.63 at. pct H. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain a more direct verification of the validity of the form of Eq. [1] for this system and also to determine the combined effects of oxygen and finely dispersed hydride precipitates on the tensile strength and ductility of polycrystalline zirconium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were machined from the same rolled billet of Kroll zirconium used in the earlier study.' These measured 38 by 4.7 by 0.5 mm and had 10-mm gage lengths which were 2.8 by 0.5 mm. Each specimen was ß-annealed in vacuo at 1173°K for 15.5 hr and a-annealed at 1073°K for 4 hr to D. G. IMD______________ give an equiaxed structure with grain diameters averaging 0.06 mm. Oxygen was added by allowing the metal to react with a known quantity of oxygen during the 0 anneal and known quantities of hydrogen were added during the a anneal. Each alloy was encapsulated in Pyrex under vacuum, annealed at 873°K for 4 hr, quenched into ice water, and polished by immersion in a solution of 46.75 vol pct H2O, 46.75 vol pct concentrated HNO3, and 6.5 vol pct HF (49 pct) at 298°K. Special heat treatments given to a few specimens are described in the results below. Tensile tests were done on an Instron machine and were begun within 20 min after the quench, except where specified otherwise. Tests at 298°K were in air, at 178°K in acetone, and at 77°K in liquid nitrogen. All tests were at a strain rate of 8x sec-1. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Yield Stress at 298°K. The compositions of alloys and the corresponding yield stresses (0.2 pct strain) are given in Table I. A plot of the yield stresses of the oxygen alloys, A, B, C, and D, indicates that varies linearly with CO1/2, where Co is the oxygen concentration, Fig. 1. This is in accord with Fleischer's6 theory for solution strengthening if the oxygen atoms do not cluster, or the cluster size remains constant with increasing oxygen concentration. In Fig. 1, it appears that if one could prepare some oxygen-free zirconium its yield stress would be very low. Therefore, we shall assume that for the oxygen alloys is equivalent to O0, the strength increment contributed by the presence of oxygen. The relationship between0.2and Co is expressed by 0.2 = 31.3 CO1/2, when the yield stress is in kg per sq mm and the concentration is in at. pct. Each of the hydrogen alloys, Al, A2, A3, and A4, contained 0.081 at. pct 0 as an impurity. In Fig. 1, it appears that this small amount of oxygen makes a significant contribution to the strength which cannot be ignored when we evaluate the contribution of the finely dispersed hydride. Let us assume the validity of the following equation: a0.2 = (a2o+a2R)1/2 [2] which is analogous to Eq. [I] for single crystals, and calculate values of UH for the hydrogen alloys by using the experimental values of 0.2 and o (0.081 at. pct) = 8.9 kg per sq mm. The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. This paper presents an analysis of the heat transfer process between the mine ventilation air and the frozen rockmass. The heat transfer model takes into account not only by the mutual change in air and rockmass temperatures, but also by the phase change of ice-water- ice. Based on the analysis presented here it is concluded that the mine thermal regime can be regulated by having the air enter the mine through mined-out excavations or development airways.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

[Executive Director’s note: ISEE is committed to continuing its efforts to ensure that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. In the July/August 2001 issue of the J o u rnal we printed excerpts from “Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Hazard,” an article from the Safety Update, published by Nobel Insurance Services. We also re minded readers of the text from the 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting as follows: “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underg round and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or N Ox may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses.” While incidents are rare, a number of cases in re c e n t years have resulted from outdoor blasting operations p roducing carbon monoxide gas that has migrated t h rough the earth and accumulated in nearby enclosed spaces. T h e re are steps that a blaster can take to be proactive in preventing incidents. These steps and studies of the occurrence have been expertly presented in several papers presented at ISEE conferences and included in the ISEE Conference Proceedings, available th rough the Blasters Library. In addition, Material Safety Data Sheets provided with explosives used in surf a c e blasting should provide additional information on gases p roduced by detonation. Below, we have reprinted the IME white paper, entitled “Fumes from Blasting Operations.” The paper underscores the unique set of circumstances that combine to contribute to high concentrations of CO measurements in underground, enclosed spaces following the detonation of explosive materials and provides recommendations to blasters

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: a minimum filling rate of 250 m3/h, a curing time of 28 days, and minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

"In recent years, the scale-up of mechanical flotation machines has been attempted with greater frequency. In contrast, the development of rotor-stator designs has been subject to greater inertia. The rotor-stator components are integral to the operation of mechanical flotation machines, responsible for the key physical processes of solids suspension, gas dispersion and energy dissipation. Design modifications are predicated upon the dual purpose of meeting customer needs while achieving metallurgical performance objectives. Accomplishing the latter is a rigorous undertaking, typically involving the sequential application of fluid dynamics principles, prototyping, smaller-scale research screening studies and larger-scale development projects. This industrial evaluation details the final stages of the forced-air rotor-stator development process using a double-refractory Carlin-type gold ore. A bypass stream of the primary rougher feed was further classified into cyclone underflow and overflow products. Four rotor-stator treatments were evaluated using parallel flotation rows coupled with a randomized statistical design. Only two treatments are compared in this initial assessment. Metallurgical responses were measured as a function of the random variation of key machine factors. Machine characterization measurements complemented the analysis of flotation performance indicators."

A plate of an 18 pct Ni (250 grade) maraging steel was homogenized, cold rolled, and re crystallized to produce a fine grained, homogeneous structure. The strength properties were then measured as a function of cold rollinq prior to aging. Material in the solution heat treated condition exhibited substantial strengthening from cold rolling. The strength increase and the rate of strengthening were proportional to the amount of cold work. This benefit, of up to 50 ksi, was retained during aging for 3 hr at 900°F. The structures produced by cold rolling and aging have been systematically investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation debris produced by cold work influences the morphology and distribution of precipitate particles as well as the rate of precipitation. An essential feature of the high nickel maraging steels is a martensitic transformation from y to a with the resultant production of a supersaturated bcc solid solution. This solution decomposes to form precipitates during a subsequent aging treatment.' The martensitic transformation in low carbon Fe-Ni alloys and the mechanical properties of these alloys have been studied extensively.2"4 The carbon content of maraging steel is kept very low to avoid the embrittling Fe3C phase and to minimize the acicular, or twinned martensite common to high carbon steels. Maraging steels are usually strengthened only by heat treatment, but cold working is also quite effective in this respect as was shown by Decker, Eash, and Goldman,' Kula and Hickey,5 and the present work. There is, however, some disagreement between the present results and those of Kula and Hickey. Because of their unusual combination of strength and toughness, the maraging steels are suitable for applications where reliability at high stress levels is required. The strength level is achieved through a combination of solid solution hardening,' substructure hardening,3 and precipitation hardening,6 of which the last is the most important. The toughness of these steels has been reported to be a result of the absence of brittle grain boundary precipitates,7 and the fact that the matrix is a massive martensite rather than a twinned martensite.' One of the problems in the manufacture and use of maraging steel has been its tendency to develop laminations in sheets parallel to the rolling plane.9,10 The present investigation was intended to determine whether or not an improvement in the microstructure of this steel by thermomechani-cal processing would improve mechanical properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A plate ($ in. thick) of an 18 pct Ni-250 grade maraging steel* was obtained and examined metallo- "Analysis, wt pct: 18.1 Ni, 8.6 Co, 5.3 Mo, 0.4 Ti, 0.07 Mn, 0.05 Cr, 0.05 Si, 0.002B. 0.1 Cu. 0.05 Al. 0.002 Zr, 0.016 C, balance Fe. graphically. It was found to contain laminations as described by previous investigators. This plate was then annealed at 2100°F for 24 hr to promote homogeneity. Pilot studies on small coupons had shown that this was the minimum temperature required to accomplish homogenization in 24 hr. Since this treatment caused excessive grain growth, the steel was subsequently cold rolled and recrystallized. Cold rolling was accomplished at about 5 pct per pass to a total reduction of 66 pct. The standard solution annealing treatment (1 hr at 1500°F) was adequate to cause recrystallization of the cold worked steel. The recrystallized steel was then cold rolled and ground by various amounts to produce specimens with uniform thickness and selected amounts of cold rolling. All tensile specimens with less than 90 pct cold reduction were ground to a thickness of 0.050 in. Specimens with 90 pct cold reduction were 0.025 in. thick. All
