Operation of large SAG mills requires a change in the conceptual approach to grinding processes. The traditional energy consumption criteria are now enhanced with new criteria derived from the mechanical dynamics of the mill load. This new approach demands instrumentation capable of providing accurate information about the load movement and the ratio of balls and ore inside the mill. This paper discusses two new performance enhancing tools available to meet these needs.

The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

The structural, textural and mineralogical properties of the slate formations of NW Spain make it the most important district in the world for quarrying roofing slates. Over the past 10 years the introduction of new methods has increased yields from 2 to 13%. The main factors affecting quality are quartz grain size less than 75 micrometres, homogeneity of slaty cleavage and S0-S1 intersection angle, very low metamorphic grade, absence of secondary foliation, beds 10-12 m thick and low content of oxidisable Fe sulphides. The two main controls on fissility are lithology and deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The minimum natural block size should be 0.6 m3 but this volume can be reduced for modern cutting tools such as diamond wire, chain and circular saws. Structural analysis is crucial in exploration and quarrying, as shown by the prospecting methodology applied at Dominio de Truchas in central Spain and the computer analysis of rock mass discontinuities at Casaio quarry

A specially recommended cable is a rubber-sheathed cable that has met the minimum performance requirements for cables as set forth in Schedule 20. The first in the series of recommended cables was listed September, 1930, by an ad- vance notice published as Information Circular 6375 which described the conditions under which the cable tests were made. Since that time six additional cables have met the test re- quirements and have been specially recommended. The cables were tested under conditions designed to show their approximate perform- ance under mine conditions. Only twin-type cables have met these test conditions. Although the recommended trailing cables are much better and safer for mine use than other cables and withstand being run over by a 7-ton car, they should not be considered as 100 per cent safe. The 7-ton car test represents the minimum limit requirement effective at present under Schedule 2-C, but the test car operates on a straight and level track, and thus does not represent the more severe conditions of mine use such as might result from uneven and curved tracks.

"The optimization of metallurgical processes requires an in-depth understanding of the heterogeneity carried by any constituent of interest. It emphasizes that knowledge of the Theory of Sampling (TOS) is the necessary step to ensure that valuable and valid research programs, pilot plants, feasibility studies, plant design and plant operations have been set on solid foundations. Too many publications today are solely based on the properties of the sample, with no mention of how this sample relates to anything in the environment where it was collected. Unfortunately sampling is an error-generating process that leaves no apparent tracks of its shortcomings. Indeed, it is easier to track down analytical errors than sampling errors. Consequently, bad sampling practices plague the scientific community and the industry and are responsible for severe money losses, unsatisfactory science and processing, and sometimes litigation. A point-by-point strategy is presented addressing sampling problems in early stages of a project. Sampling system requirements for metallurgical accounting and process control are listed. The use of Chronostatistics is suggested to determine if sampling systems are performing satisfactorily and to identify the various types of process variability that may not be easily detected by a conventional inspection of available chronological data. This strategy will help engineering firms, manufacturers, managers and supervisors to provide, install, use and maintain key sampling systems located at very important points in a process. Equipped with the appropriate sampling and statistical tools it becomes easier to minimize reconciliation problems with the mine, with suppliers and with clients. Contrary to the beliefs of many people, good sampling systems are not expensive because in the long run they help to reduce hidden cost and better regulate plant productivity; they most certainly minimize the number of unnecessary meetings looking for solutions where there are none. The suggested strategy will help specialists to extract maximum information from the available data, as large investments and crucial decisions depend on it."

In choosing such a threadbare subject for a paper I fear that I may in some measure be taxing your patience, yet as upon the accuracy with which the work is done depends the result of conclusions drawn as to whether a property will be profitable to work or otherwise. The subject cannot be too well threshed out, and I trust that upon certain points that have come within my own experience I may be able to give 'hints that will prevent others from making mistakes. First as to alluvial. Gold is often found from the grass roots down, often ill particular horizontal bands in the wash, but more generally concentrated either on a true or false bottom. When sampling dry ground for proposed hydraulicing I have obtained accurate results only by taking the whole of the dirt from measured shafts, stacking it as it was lifted on a tarpaulin, and putting the whole quantity through a carefully constructed box. In wet ground careful borings will in most cases give fairly correct results, but where it is possible to sink shafts, that should be done, as a guide is then also obtained as to the nature of the wash, whether it is bouldery, cemented, or free. Sampling in a face is a more difficult work in many respects than in new ground, as so many elements enter into action to spoil accurate sampling. Of course the great thing to avoid is sampling in any place where either natural or artificial concentration has taken place, and very much has to be left to circumstance and the sampler's own judgment. In passing I may mention that I have on several occasions seen diggers deceive themselves in wet ground where they were sinking and coping as best they might with water. They would take a dish of dirt from the bottom of their hole, pan it off, and take the result as a fair yield, and on the strength of it perhaps spend a lot of time and money in tail races and whereas in their sample there had been a process of concentration carried on, the movement and working in the water had caused the gold to work down, and anything like accurate estimations by the method pursued were out of the question.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. "In our increasingly competitive market, attempts to improve productivity by increasing axle loads have placed more severe demands on rails. CP Rail thus requires stronger, tougher, and more wear-resistant rails from steel manufacturers. The choice of any rail steel is always a compromise between technical and economic factors. The technical assessment of a candidate rail consists of laboratory and field testing. Laboratory evaluation of rail steels cannot adequately model many service conditions and must, therefore, be supplemented by long-term field testing. The field testing conducted on CP Rail is the subject of this paper.Long-term, in-track, assessment of candidate rail steels begins with the selection and re-laying of a test curve representative of the intended service with both the candidate rail and a control rail steel (i.e. the present intermediate or premium rail standard). The wear performance of the candidate rail is evaluated, in relation to that of the control rail, using data obtained with a rail profilometer developed by the Research and Development Department of CP Rail. Qualitative observations are also periodically made to evaluate the relative susceptibilities of the two rail types to surface defect formation. Testing continues until stable metal loss patterns are achieved. Relative life predictions are then made and detailed monitoring of the test site is discontinued.CP Rail's in-track assessment program for premium rails has resulted in the establishment of a new CP Rail premium rail standard - low-alloy, head-hardened, rails have replaced high alloy rails. The wear/fatigue lives of these new premium rails exceed those of our previous standard by more than 50%, and they also exhibit excellent weldability. CP Rail will continue to evaluate new premium and intermediate strength rail products."

Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-proof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers' opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

ROBERT VAN ARSDALE NORRIS, who died at his home at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on April 20, 1928, was born at Newark, N. J., on May 2, 1864, of parents who were direct descendants of such sterling New Eng-landers as Governor William Bradford, John Alden and Timothy Dwight. He went to the Collegiate School in New York and then to the Colum-bia School of Mines where he graduated with the class of 1885, having among class-mates A. S. Dwight, E. N. En-gelhardt, H. L. Hollis, G. B. Lee, Richard Moldenke, Wil-bur Sanders, Joseph Struth-ers, E. A. Wiltsee, and I. H. Woolson. His marked ability even among so many men of unusual ability caused him to be chosen as assistant to Pro- fessor Munroe in the summer school of mining and survey-ing immediately after gradua-tion, and he shortly after was also inspector of dredging operations on the Maurice River improvement work, Millville, N. J. The follow- ing year he worked in the chemical laboratory of Herman Behr in Brooklyn, and toward the end of 1886 he joined the staff of the Pennsylvania R. R. Coal Co. and the Susquehanna Coal Co. as assistant engineer. Six years later he was made principal assistant en- gineer and in 1900 he was made chief engineer of these companies. In 1904, he withdrew from them and estab- lished an office as a consulting engineer at Wilkes- Barre, later taking his son, Robert V., Jr., into partner- ship with him. They acted as consulting engineers for the coal department of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western R. R. Co., the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., Coke Bros. & Go., Inc., the coal department of the Pennsyl- vania R. R. Co., the Wilkes-Barre & Hazelton R. R. Co., the Sterling Salt Co., and others, specializing in ex- amination and appraisal of coal properties, and also matters of Federal taxation.

A blasting improvement program began in 1985 at two traprock quarries in Connecticut to reduce the levels of ground motions and airblast measured at residential structures surrounding the operations. The quarries are situated within town limits, adjacent to a number of historical and other structures. Although blasting vibration amplitudes were found to be far below those that could produce cosmetic defects in structures, they were perceived to be the cause of structural defects observed by homeowners. Based on a comprehensive * review of blasting practices in place during1985, an extensive vibration monitoring program was implemented. The initial study included the instrumentation of selected residential structures to record and analyze strains imposed within structures from quarry blasting, environmental changes, and from daily household activities. A comparison of the results was made with the results reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1980. The highest strain imposed in drywall from blasting (13 J_I strain) was 12% and 1% of the highest strain levels recorded for normal household activities and temperature changes, respectively. The present philosophy in production blasting is to attempt to keep vibration amplitudes as low as practical by implementing state-of-art blasting control techniques. Currently, blasting seismographs are placed in a circular manner around each quarry, providing production blast vibration records for 360 degrees of coverage at distances of 2500 to 4000 ft. from blasting operations. Seismograph and production blast records are analyzed each year and become part of a Blasting Improvement Plan submitted to the local zoning commission as part of the annual operating permit process. This paper summarizes the results of previous vibration monitoring programs and outlines the modifications made to blasting practices to minimize the levels of ground motions and airblasts. The public relations efforts and standard corporate procedures used by company personnel to address all blast related complaints and alleged damage claims since 1985 are also discussed.

Social attention to environmental aspects, steadily increasing in European Countries, has been leading to a stricter regulation of many productive activities. Among them, mining and quarrying sectors have been often censured for their potential and real impacts on land and environment. Referring to dimension stone exploitation (also the terms ornamental stone or natural stone are here used as synonymous), quarries are often concentrated in extractive basins, where the resource is localized with suitable quality and quantity: this fact has sometimes raised critical environmental situations. Nevertheless, dimension stone quarrying represents in Europe a traditional and important economical activity, source of wealth and employment. Moreover, many natural stones take on a ?cultural? value and may be considered as ?classic?, as they have been exploited since antiquity and are element of the architectural heritage of many Countries. The sector relevance demands the research of a sustainable balance between social-economical needs and environmental protection. Actually, very restrictive environmental protection policies have led to severe limitations to quarrying activity, but the results do not seem to be completely positive in terms of sustainability: on the one hand, closing-down stone quarrying activities imposes a shrinkage in local, social and economical development; on the other, quarrying activity is pushed towards developing Countries, environmentally un-protected, simply moving and putting off to next future the problem. The challenge of the sustainable development of quarrying sector ? recently explored in the European Commission?s communication ?Promoting sustainable development in the EU non energy extractive industry? (COM-2000-265) ? should be achieved through a positive link between theoretical statements and practical effects: sustainability indicators may be an effective instrument to assess and monitor the environmental performance of the industry. The paper refers to the development of specific ecological criteria and indicators, which can be useful to measure and predict the eco-efficiency of a dimension stone quarry, finally pointing out where improvement efforts have to be focused.

"The use of ultrasonic in industrial processes has increased during the last few years. Ultrasonic vibrations are used in sieving, grinding, ore washing, cleaning, and flotation in mineral industry. There are also some attempts for the utilization of ultrasonic treatment in separation and removal of fine particles from gases and liquids. In Kalemaden A.S. (Turkey) four different types of clay mixtures (1. A mixture of clays from Balikesir-Düvertepe and Istanbul-Sile, 2. A mixture of clays from Ukrania and Balikesir-Düvertepe, 3. Sögüt-Kadikelimesi, 4. A mixture of clays from Sögüt and Istanbul-Sile) and kaolin from Balikesir-Düvertepe (Turkey) are concentrated before their use in ceramic production. Dewatering is the important step in those types of concentration plants. Sedimentation of concentrated clay has always been difficult and taken long times due to their nature and having small particle sizes. Flocculants can be used to enhance the sedimentation, but they are not preferred by the ceramic industry since they affect the quality of ceramic products. For this purpose, ultrasonic treatment is used in the sedimentation of clays mentioned above for solving the problems encountered related to the ceramic industry and promising results were obtained.Kaolin sample, subjected to this experimental study, from Balikesir-Düvertepe region of Turkey was brought from the plant as a pulp in containers and throughly mixed with a stirrer before sedimentation experiments. A two liter graduated cylinder and an ultrasonic bath (with 25 kHz frequency and 0.5 KW power) were utilized in the tests. Superfloc A-120 (1% concentration) was used as a flocculant. The settling distance was reported against the settling time during the experiments. Initial and final pulp densities were also determined. The effects of several parameters such as pulp density, flocculant addition, and ultrasonic treatment on the sedimentation of kaolin were investigated and the results are represented in terms of settling distance versus settling time."

In the spring of 1988, Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners Ltd. Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc. and Homestake Mining Co., as joint venturers, were awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 91372. This was one of 11 leases awarded to the joint venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 68 Mt (67 million long tons). Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 6.2 Mm3 (39.4 million bbl) and 1114 Mm3 (7.2 billion cu ft), respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and were also given fast-track status. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began. Joint venture The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of 13 joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has since changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. Texasgulf assigned its interests to its parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This joint venture, the first of its kind, was created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced a lease sale date of Feb. 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the 13 leases the joint ventures bid on, 11 were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Ltd. Partnership. Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases.

Introduction The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA, in the Talley Run valley. It includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey No. 2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas. Clean coal is shipped from the complex by way of a 24-km (15-mile) rail spur. It con¬nects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at building the mine. Construction began in Dec. 1981, less than six months after the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey preparation plant in Sept. 1984. Several factors allowed quick permitting at Bailey. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, and identification of red flag issues helped. So did innovative responses to environmental questions, and development of environmentally sound project designs. Forming a project planning team Consol management decided that Bailey mine construction had to begin in late 1981. A project permitting team was immediately formed to see that this goal was achieved. Team members included a project manager and personnel from Consol's engineering, environmental, and operating departments. Communications among all team members was crucial in obtaining the various state and Federal environmental permits. All project permitting team members participated in weekly meetings during application preparation. Discussions at these meetings ranged from recent public contacts, to application content, to environmental design considerations. Establishing a project manager was critical to the team's success. The project manager was responsible for seeing that permit acquisition, facility construction, and operation of the mining complex proceeded on schedule. The project manager had the final word, mediated disagreements, and frequently served as project spokesman to the public. Identifying red flag issues Red flag issues are those environmental factors with the most potential for delaying the schedule or stopping the project. The first red flag issue identified was organized local opposition. On Dec. 8, 1916, at a meeting held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the John Fritz Medal was presented to Professor Elihu, Thomson, "for his achievements in electrical invention, in electrical engineering, in industrial development and,in scientific research." Professor Albert Sauveur presided. John J. Carty, chairman of the Presentation Committee of the Board of Award, made a short address-on the history and significance of the medal. He was followed by E. W. Rice, Jr., president of the General Electric Co., who spoke at length of the achievements of Dr. Thomson, whom he called "one of the world's most prolific and industrious inventors and scientists." Among other things, he said: "In the, field of electrical inventions alone, Professor Thomson has been awarded something over 550 United States patents, and in other fields; notably mechanical work, about 150 patent.,. he has made contributions to the world's scientific, and technical literature, in several hundred articles describing not only his own dis-coveries and inventions but making remarkably interesting contributions to scientific speculation and thought. "A skilled workman, he is always able himself to do the work which he asks others to perform. "His inventions are the result of such profound and accurate knowledge,. and developed with such skill, that they almost invariably work on the first, trial in accordance with expectation." Dr. Richard C. Maclaurin, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, spoke of the personality of the man as well as of his accomplishments, as follows: "He has not only clone great things himself, but has shown ,in intense desire to help all who are struggling earnestly with scientific problems. He has proved an inspiration to an ever-widening circle of engineers and others who have entrusted him with their secrets and sought his help in overcoming their difficulties.
