The Process Mineralogy review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The Process Mineralogy Committee scheduled programs with both SME and The Metallurgical Society. At the 1991 SME Annual Meeting in Denver, CO the committee sponsored five sessions containing 31 papers. Four process mineralogy sessions were sponsored at the 1992 annual TMS meeting in San Diego, CA. Process mineralogy is used to understand and evaluate mineral behaviors during mineral beneficiation, phase reactions during metallurgy, recoveries and reactions of precious metals during processing and mineral and phase behaviors with respect to environmental problems. The most recent refinement in mineralogical studies with respect to mineral beneficiation has been the wider use of image analysis and combined materials balancing techniques of image analysis data. Image analyzers that can perform analysis with respect to mineral beneficiation are expensive. They are used only for solving major processing problems. Nevertheless, the methodology of analysis continues to be refined. Much better data are collected, and methods of evaluating the data continue to improve. One interesting development involves modifying the ultrasound unit used in medical studies to perform a three-dimensional analysis of ore particles.

A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water:cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1.

This paper introduces a method for teaching workers to communicate necessary information when giving or receiving emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people may not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Interviews conducted with 48 underground coal miners who had escaped mine fires revealed that the warning information provided was inadequate. In some cases, sufficient information was not provided to the endangered miners. At other times, miners failed to ask for information they needed to plan and execute effective escapes. Researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have been studying the content of emergency warning messages and have developed an emergency communication protocol. A training intervention that presents the protocol and related mental cues is being evaluated for effectiveness in improving the content of emergency messages. In this paper the protocol is presented and the training package described. The evaluation procedures and a summary of the analyses conducted to-date are also provided. The training package was developed for use with underground coal miners, but could easily be modified for emergency communications training in other settings.

There was very little oil activity in Utah in 1938. A few wildcat tests were drilled and the well at Cane Creek, started in 1937, was in active operation, but failed to reach its objective by the close of the year. The Clay Basin field in Daggett County, northeastern Utah, was extended about a mile east by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. with the completion early in June of No. 3-D Murphy, NW. NW. SW. of sec. 23-3N-24 E. This well had an initial production of 16,000,000 Cu. ft. of gas a day under 2160 Ib. pressure, from Dakota sand at 5918 to 5925 ft. after plugging back from a total depth of 6035 feet. The Clay Basin field, in the few years it has been in operation, has developed into a gas field of major importance. Approximately 1300 acres has now been proved by development. Six wells are on production, five of which were completed in Dakota sand and the sixth in a sand in the Frontier formation. The field was connected to the Salt Lake line

I strongly endorse Mr. Jackson's (Inland Steel Company) oral comment on the authors' paper that, as blast furnace slag is removed from the BOF charge, lime solution may be retarded. After two or three pourings, the blast furnace slag will contain some iron oxide and considerable manganese oxide, and it is hot and possibly still liquid. A few thousand pounds of this slag will speed up the slag development rate considerably and could be considered a good auxiliary flux. Although the removal of blast furnace slag from the BOF charge lowers the total sulfur load by 40 to 50%, we must have a good, quick slag development in the BOF to bring .030 to .035% sulfur hot metal to .020%, a requirement on a high percentage of our steels today. In discussions at off-the-record meetings and one not published at last year's annual meeting as well as discussions with many operators over the past 1-1/2 years, I predicted that the removal of blast furnace slag could slow down lime dissolution and that, if a shop had dissolution problems before, the problem could be quite serious.

The vermiculite review arrived too late for the June issue. In 1992, production of commercial vermiculite in the United States increased 1 % to 170 kt (187,000 st), according to the US Bureau of Mines. The estimated value of vermiculite concentrate was $13.6 million, yielding an average value of $80/t ($72.50/st). Vermiculite is used in several physical forms. Use of the thermally exfoliated product include light weight aggregates, horticultural growth media, thermal insulation applications and absorbents for spill control and liquid waste containment. The untreated commercial concentrates are used as intumescent fillers in plaster board, gaskets and paints. Several chemically modified vermiculite products include clay-sized dispersions and granules for treating flue gas. South Africa was the only major foreign source of vermiculite used in the United States. It exported about 40 kt (44,000 st) to the United States last year. In 1992, Palabora Mining Co. began processing vermiculite in a new beneficiation mill at Phalabowra. It produced about 164 kt (181,000 st). Minor sources of foreign vermiculite concentrates consumed in the United States included about 140 kt (154,000 st) from China. Brazil also exports some concentrate to the United States.

A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from the gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore of the Kensington deposit (Echo Bay Mines and Coeur d'Alene Mines), and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional "mechanically agitated" flotation, Tests were conducted in a 150 mm diameter, 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail. The bulk metallurgical ore sample had an average "as tested" feed grade of about 5 git gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbrayite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of97%, but produced grades of +150 git Au.

Several projects are underway in Nassau County, New York, to improve water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major piece in accomp­lishing this is the Bay Park Conveyance Project. When completed, it will divert most of the treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pol­lution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 mi (5.8 km) of micro­tunneling, 7 mi (11.3 km) of sliplining, 14 shafts and a 75 million gal (284 mil­lion L) per day pump station. In February 2021; Western Bays Constructors (WBC) - a joint venture of John P. Picone and Northeast Remsco Construction - was awarded the design-build contract. For final design, WBC retained Delve Underground to lead the design team for the project. Delve Underground worked in concert with WBC and its subcontractor, Keller, to determine optimal shaft construction methodologies, and during tender, evaluated options that would limit groundwater inflows to the allowable limits. This article focuses on how support of excavation {SOE) was selected for the 14 primary shafts for the microtunneling efforts as well as key design components to address shaft performance needs.

There is an error at the bottom of the right-hand column of p. 11, and the top left-hand column of p. 12. The first paragraph of the section EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS should read: "Thermal shock tests were conducted on circular discs of basalt, quartzite, and taconite. Average grain sizes ranged between 0.10 and 0.25 mm. Individual discs were tested only once, either in a cooling or heating shock. Several discs of the same rock type were shocked at a temperature, and the temperature level then was increased for another test by 10° to 20°F until complete fracture occurred when a specimen was quenched. The minimum temperature difference required to initiate cracking, TmiN was observed and used, together with other property values, to compute the dimensionless stress o*max . The observed ?Tmin for cooling shock in different media is tabulated in Table I. The property values E, St, a, and K are shown in Figs. 6, 8, 10, and 11, respectively. Discs of various rocks shocked in different isothermal baths gave o*max values for a wide range of Biot numbers. These o*max values were then compared with the theoretically predicted values."

In order to fully understand why Amax Coal puts such extreme emphasis on the drilling and blasting programs at each of our mines, we must review the past. This paper will discuss the drilling and blasting techniques we used in the 1970s and their evolution to current practices. As time progressed, major changes influenced the surface mining of coal through new more restrictive governmental controls and local communities organising into groups with two goals in mind, one to shut down the mines and the second to try and get rich by making false and unjust damage suits against the mines. In virtually all of our midwest surface operations we have at one time or presently are facing litigation that has reached into the millions of dollars. Amax Coal has worked in co-operation with the United States Bureau of Mines in the areas of blast vibration, shot design, highwall safety, blast casting studies and many more. Today we are continuing to work with Dr David Siskind and his expert staff seeking answers to old and new problems addressing the blasting of overburden and parting seams.

The objective of the mission was basically to study the utilization of engineers and engineering technicians and their interrelationship in the Soviet Union. Beginning with their graduation from the engineering institutes and technicums, we hoped to learn how the graduates started out in industry, what their training on the job was, what sort of work they did, and how they worked themselves up within their profession. However, it turned out that, as our host was the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education, most of our visits were to educational establishments. Our itinerary covered Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov, Rostov, Baku, and Tashkent, with a side trip to Samarkand. In all, we visited 13 technical institutes, three technicums, and five industrial plants or enterprises, as they are called there. Our trip was one of only four weeks. Our observations were limited by the few cities and enterprises we were permitted to visit. Nevertheless, we did come back with some definite impressions and conclusions which we feel should be of interest to engineers, educators, and those concerned with the relative economic and technical power of the USSR and the U.S.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. "INTRODUCTIONFlotation of mineral particles by cationic surfactants – namely alkyl amines and their derivatives – is finding ever growing application in processing of various ores and in quality refinement of the benefication end products, iron concentrates for example. In the recent years application of cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines - enabled the development of new highly efficient procedure of water-soluble mineral processing, being also the one with low energy consumption. This procedure is a reverse flotation of carnallite from bay salts of salt-pans and from carnallite ores.The efficiency of cationic SAS influence depends upon colloid-chemical state of the collector in flotation liquid phase, especially if the latter comprises mineral salts. Availability of clayey impurities or slime particles of iron oxide in cation flotation feed, which actively sorb the cationic collector, deteriorate considerably the cation flotation performances. In Halurgy Institute the investigations of cation flotation under potash and carnallite ore processing have been carried out, and new reagent modes, enhancing cationic surfactants sorption at mineral particles, have been developed. Application of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles."

Mine site restoration, involving the re-establishment of original ecosystems, is a far greater challenge than revegetation, which simply aims to stabilise the site and to give it a green appearance. One of the challenges is to establish a simple yet effective measure of restoration success. A potentially useful approach is to focus on particular groups of plants or animals which are likely to provide a general indication of the state of the ecosystem in which they occur. Ants have been used extensively by the mining industry in this context, particularly in northern Australia. Ants are likely to be useful bioindicators because of their general importance in the Australian environment, and because of the many linkages they have with other parts of the ecosystem. Moreover, ant community structure responds to stress and disturbance in predictable ways, and therefore provides an interpretable measure of ecosystem change. This is illustrated by a study of ant recolonisation at Ranger uranium mine. However, the extent to which ants reflect the responses of other ecosystem components is poorly documented. This is currently the subject of a collaborative project between OSS and CSIRO.

Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

Initiation of small diameter explosives by sympathetic shock pressure in water has been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Changes either in the geometry of the donor explosive or its point of initiation can alter the essential characteristics (amplitude and duration) of the resulting shock pressure pulse. The pressure signatures from both spherical and cylindrical explosives donors have been studied, in water as well as in various explosive matrices. This paper summarizes the investigations carried out with both 'primed' and 'non-primed' slurry and emulsion explosive matrices with various types of voids. These measurements serve the basis for predicting distances in water for sympathetic initiation for both spherical and linear charges. It is shown that the explosive-detonator system in combination has a far greater probability of initiation due to sympathetic shock pressure than either the explosive or the detonator alone. Various explosive matrices with air bubbles and glass microballoons have been examined and the differing sensitivities to shock pressure explained on the basis of these measurements. It is also concluded that explosives containing air bubbles instead of microballoons would be significantly more prone to sympathetic initiation.

A novel anode slime purification process was developed and tested at pilot scale in the Chuquicamata Refinery. The process consists of three main stages: First, an atmospheric alkaline leaching at 90°C, under controlled pH and ORP operation parameters where metalloid impurities are preferentially removed from the anode slimes with high efficiency. In a second stage, alkaline washing of the mud leached with addition of reducing agent, with the intention of reducing the silver of the AgCl to metallic silver releasing the chloride, and finally, copper and other remaining impurities are leached out in mild conditions (60°C, one hour in sulphuric acid). In a side process Se, Te, and Sb are recovery with high efficiency from the alkaline liquor as chemical grade products. The global balance shows a high mass loss yielding a final product with high precious metal and low impurities content showing advantages in both a technical and economic point of view with a clear environmental sustainability. This treatment allows either the direct sale of the purified anode slimes or its pyrometallurgical treatment to obtain metal doré without emissions of Se, Sb and As. Chemical mechanisms for this novel process are also described.

We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. For single-row shots, the delay between holes in a row is used; for multiple-row shots, the delay between holes In a row is kept constant and the delay between rows is incremented. Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. Previously, two groups have conducted studies in order to define the influences of the intermediate principal stress. Mogi studied biaxial compression on prisms of Dunham dolomite and concluded that the intermediate principal stress should be taken into account. His study showed that failure strength increases with increasing [02], but less than the strength increase with increasing confining pressure. Handin, Heard, and Mogouirk's study on cylinders of Solenhofen limestone in torsion also found that the strength depends on the magnitude of [02]. More recent investigations by Mogi varying all three principal stresses independently and by Wawersik varying two of the principal stresses independently provide more detailed data confirming the effect of [02] on failure. All these tests were at low strain rates, and only the work of Wawersik reports measurement of all strains. The investigation here measures axial and transverse strains and included uniaxial and triaxial stress compression tests and biaxial stress tests using tubular samples (axial load and internal or external fluid pressure) at strain rates to 103/sec to provide the stress-strain response and to define the maximum stress or yield locus of Solenhofen limestone and Westerly granite.
