A simplified energy model for the United States is quantified for a recent historical period. The basic model and calculated quantified structures are used for a number of analytical case studies that estimate midterm and long-range shifts in patterns of energy resources demand and required supply. Historical data series are presented for the years 1947 to 1965 in the form of integrated energy balances by source, form, and consuming sector. In case studies I to XII, conditional projections of historical trends of energy demand and required supply are made for the midterm period 1966 to 1980. The projections are carried out by correlation of major energy components with relevant independent variables such as major economic indicators. Simulations of the medium-range projections to 1980 are carried out by varying the assumptions for the determining variables to produce high-and low-range projections for the midterm period. Case studies XIII to XXII are long term contingency or technological forecasts to the year 2000. These cases assume technological changes or innovations that produce major shifts in the long term pattern of energy consumption and the mix of required resources. The domestic resource base is assessed in its ability to meet projected or forecast demand for energy resources under the midterm and longrun assumptions made in the various case studies. Various energy issues or problems identified from the analyses of the case studies are discussed, and possible alternative approaches to solutions to these issues or problems are suggested.

"INTRODUCTIONPolymetallic nodules from the Clarion and Clipperton Zone (CCZ) within the equatorial NE Pacific Ocean show high concentration of economic important strategic metals such as Ni, Cu, Co, Mo and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The content of those metals in nodules is depending on (i) the supply during individual growing periods, (ii) the environment conditions as well as (iii) on different manganese minerals, which occur in nodules. The incorporation of the metals can vary within the structure (incorporated into the structure / over vacancies of the structure) and this can be relevant for the further metallurgical treatment.Mineralogy of Mn-nodules from the CCZ and the incorporation of metalsManganese nodules consist of nm to µm thick layer growth structures (LGS) of different genetic origin (hydrogenetic/suboxic-diagenetic). Those LGS form due to the precipitation of Mn-and Fe-(oxy) hydroxide colloids from the oxygen rich near-bottom water and/or pore water (hydrogenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988) or from suboxic (depleted in O2 <5µmol O2/l; Hein and Koschinsky 2013)) near-bottom water/pore water (suboxicdiagenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988; Wegorzewski and Kuhn, 2014).In general, metals dissolved in seawater will be adsorbed and complexed on the oxide surfaces according to their different surface charge. The surface charge of the Mn-Fe (oxy) hydroxides depends on the pHzpc (zpc: zero point of charge). In seawater dissolved hydrated cations (Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+) are adsorbed preferentially on the negatively charged Mn-oxide (MnO2 -) surface (pHzpc 2.8). In contrast, negatively and neutrally charged complexes (e.g., Ti(OH4); REE(CO3)2 -, MoO4 2-) are adsorbed on the surface of Fe-oxy hydroxide colloids (FeOOH+) which have a slightly positively charged surface (pHzpc 8.5; Stumm and Morgan, 1981; Koschinsky and Halbach 1995)."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. This paper deals with the third phase of on extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Parts I and II of this paper were issued Serial 2621 and Serial 2647 of the Bureau of Mines in July and October, 1924. They dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entry and the resistance caused by mine cars in untimbered entry. Description of the Tests After the resistance of unobstructed entry and of mine cars in untimbered entry had been determined by tests in the Experimental Mine, three different types of timbering were installed in the test section and the increased resistance caused by the timbering was determined.

The study of the so-called refractory gold-ores of the Potsdam sandstone, ores which are probably of wider occurrence and of much greater economic importance in the Black Hills than is generally supposed, has led the writer to formulate in the present paper some of the results obtained in the course of a special examination of these particular ores, conducted at the State School of Mines at Rapid City, So. Dak. Various circumstances have interrupted the work, and it will easily be seen that relatively little has yet been accomplished; but it is hoped that this little may be of sufficient interest to justify a later supplement. Tellurium, discovered by Muller von Reichenstein in 1781, is generally classed as a very rare metal; it is further mentioned by one of our late writers as " of comparatively little importance," and as obtained from its ores by a " complicated process.&apos;&apos; Concerning its rarity, we have some trustworthy evidence below. Its commercial importance, particularly in connection with electrical appliances, has been passed upon by Mr. Edison ; * and it is certain that, in some metallurgical processes for the treatment of gold- and silver-ores, it may be saved as a byproduct at a relatively reasonable expense. The importance of tellurium as a mineralizing agent is emphasized by the remarks of one of our leading metallurgists,jwho, in his own practice and by a wide series of experiments, has found its occurrence to be much more general than has been supposed. One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

About a year and a half ago, Mr. Morris, an engineer of the Solvay Process Company, was sent to Belgium and France to study the manufacture of coke in the Semet-Solvay ovens, which were in operation at Havre. With complete plans of construction and a good understanding of the methods of running the ovens, he returned to Syracuse. Work on twelve Semet-Solvay ovens was immediately begun. These ovens, with plant for crushing and washing coal, and the necessary condensers, scrubbers, and concentrator for the recovery of the byproducts are nearly finished, and will soon be in operation. As the work approached completion it became necessary to determine what coal should be used. Accordingly, a chemical investigation of the various bituminous coals was made. I. Investigation of Coals. The samples of coal taken for analysis were: I. A sample of Reynoldsville coal that had been exposed to the weather for a year; 11. Reynoldsville coal taken from a car direct from the mine; 111. It is well known that these hoes were used for barter, and as currency in the purchase of livestock or the payment of lobolo, although reports of the value of the hoes differ widely. The difficulty in their classification has arisen from their distribution over a very wide area.

The 21-year long-term Japan-SOPAC Cooperative Deep-sea Mineral Resources Study Programme was completed in March 2006. The Programme, which commenced in 1985, has seen numerous marine research surveys being conducted within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of 12 SOPAC member countries (Figure 1). The various research and government institutions that have been closely involved in this longstanding Programme include: the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) (formerly, the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, MMAJ) and relevant ministries of the participating Pacific Island governments.

The Geita gold mines in north-western Tanzania have produced 5 Moz of gold from an estimated endowment of 15 Moz. They are generally classified as typical Archaean orogenic banded iron formations (BIF)-hosted gold deposits in banded iron formations as described by Goldfarb, Groves and Gardoll (2001); Neall and Phillips (1987); Phillips and Powell (1993) and Neall (1987). The controls on gold mineralisation have been reassessed to conclude that Nyankanga, and we conclude that Nyankanga, the largest deposits within the group, developed during a dynamic and protracted deformation history intimately associated with several stages of hydrothermal fluid flow and alteration. The fluid-induced fractures associated with gold mineralisation are primarily manifested as submillimetre to metre-scale fractures and breccias developed preferentially in rocks that have been previously deformed and altered by silicification or seafloor metasomatism. This realisation detracts from the exploration and mining strategies that would solely concentrate on fluid pathways and associated wallrock alteration and veining solely within the BIFs as hosts for economic gold mineralisation.

This paper follows that of the Milos Conf, 2002 and examines the collection and reporting of SDIs in the industrial minerals industry in Europe. It compares the characteristics of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, with its Metals and Mining Sector Supplement with those of the EU DG Enterprise Scheme, launched in 2001. The particular issue of SME&apos;s and companies which are not publicly traded is examined. The pros and cons of participating in such schemes is a central theme of the paper. The paper concludes that there and many business benefits for these companies in participating and submitting their data. The European Commission Scheme is strongly recommended for companies in the sector which are SME&apos;s and not-publicly traded as well as large firms who are listed on European Stock Exchanges.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

The sulphide ores of the principal lodes of the Boulder Mines are mainly composed of a schistose guess with a varying proportion of silica and lime, containing tellurides of gold, silver and mercury, associated with iron pyrites. "Mineralization at the Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs within a parallel series of quartz veins that occupy a NE-trending, steeply north-dipping, brittle-ductile shear zone related to the nearby terrane-bounding Sawyer Brook fault. This deformation zone cuts volcaniclastic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Silurian Waweig Formation, and is intruded by mantle-derived East Branch Brook gabbroic dikes and a number of felsic dikes. Intermittent shear-zone reactivation during local magmatic activity induced heterogeneous deformation and alteration of the country rocks and dikes. The terminal phase of shearing is associated with narrow pegmatite-aplite dikes that grade laterally into granophyric granite, and into an auriferous quartz vein. Gold, aurostibite, and gold-antimony intergrowths, predominantly with vein quartz, are associated with a low ƒO2 sulfide mineral assemblage (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and berthierite) that has a sulfur isotopic signature consistent with a magmatic source. Gold saturation and deposition occurred episodically between 300° and 360°C at low activity of sulfur, predominantly in response to pressure reduction during brittle failure combined with the effects of decreasing temperature and sulfidation reactions during fluid-wall-rock interaction. Geochronological studies demonstrate that the timing of the emplacement of the pegmatite-aplite dikes and associated auriferous veins overlap with that of the Early Devonian Magaguadavic granite. Moreover, the composition of the dikes is consistent with their derivation from this granite as late fractionates. The Main zone of the Clarence Stream deposit is therefore interpreted to be intrusion-related, with the Magaguadavic granite being the ultimate source of the gold-bearing fluids. La minéralisation de la zone principale du gisement aurifère de Clarence Stream dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick occupe une série de veines de quartz parallèles dans une zone de cisaillement fragile-ductile de direction NE et à pendage abrupt vers le nord apparentée à la faille de Sawyer Brook avoisinante qui délimite deux terranes. Cette zone de déformation recoupe les roches volcaniclastiques et volcaniques de la Formation de Waweig d’âge Silurien et est recoupée par les dykes de gabbro d’East Branch Brook, d’origine mantellique, ainsi que par divers dykes felsiques. L’or, l’aurostibite et les intercroissances d’or et d’antimoine principalement associées aux veines de quartz sont associés à un assemblage minéral de sulfures à faible ƒO2 (pyrrhotite, arsénopyrite et berthierite) présentant une signature isotopique du souffre compatible avec une source magmatique. La saturation en or et la précipitation a eu lieu épisodiquement entre 300° et 350°C dans des conditions de faible activité de souffre, principalement en réponse à la baisse de pression durant la rupture fragile ainsi qu’aux effets de la baisse de température et aux réactions de sulfuration durant l’interaction entre le fluide et l’encaissant. Les études géochronologiques indiquent que l’âge de la mise en place des dykes de pegmatite-aplite et des veines aurifères qui leur sont associées coïncide avec le granite de Magaguadavic, d’âge Dévonien Précoce. De plus, la composition des dykes est compatible avec une origine provenant de ce granite sous la forme de phases fractionnées tardives. Le gisement principale (Main zone) de Clarence Stream est ainsi considéré comme étant associé aux intrusions, le granite de Magaguadavic étant la source ultime des fluides aurifères."

DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.
