Ca-Ni based alloys were investigated on structures, hydrogenation properties and the effect of additive elements on hydrogenation properties. CaNi, samples were decomposed to form a new hydride with a CsCl-type structure on the constituent metal atoms at high temperatures such as 673K in a hydrogen atmosphere. The candidate of the third element which was added to stabilize the original compound was investigated by using the Miedema's semi- empirical model and, as a result, Pd was chosen. The hydrogenation of CaPd was conducted with a Sieverts' type apparatus and the synthesis of Ca-Ni-Pd ternary alloys was performed by high frequency heating.

The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 legislated maximum dust levels for the working place. As the law was implemented, extensive efforts were undertaken to provide the technology necessary to control dust generation. One approach to dust control was the use of high expansion foam in place of the usual water sprays on coal cutting equipment. At the time of the act, high expansion foam had already seen considerable testing for the suppression of dust in underground coal mines. Work by MSA, several coal companies and the Bureau of Mines itself had provided data which showed foam to have some merit as a dust control mechanism. It suffered in a few areas, however, which limited its practical application. Its principal difficulty was persistence which hampered operations due to foam buildup, but problems were also encountered due to equipment size and form.

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

A mathematical model was developed to study fluid flow and solidification in a single-roll casting system. Fluid flow coupled with energy equations were solved numerically using a finite volume method. A body-fitted coordinate transformation technique was adopted to handle the irregularly shaped domain. In order to couple the continuity and momentum equations, a SIMPLEC algorithm was used. A fixed-grid enthalpy method was considered to model the solidification in the system. The turbulence effect on flow field was modeled using a low-Re k-e model The model developed in this work was further run under various conditions to optimize the operating parameters of the process.

In this study, batch flotation experiments were conducted to recover rare earth elements (REE) from an REE ore deposit in the Mushgai Khudag area, Mongolia. Apatite was found to be the major REE mineral while monazite and xenomite were observed as minor minerals. The main purpose was to float apatite to increase the REE content. Oleic acid was used as collector and MIBC was used as frother. Sodium silicate was used as a depressant for iron compounds. NaOH was used to adjust the pH of the flotation to about 9.5~10.0. The particle size was 90% less than 152 ?m (- 100 mesh). The content of REE elements was analysed by ICP - OES to determine the contents of REE such as Ce, La, Nd, Pr and Y. When sodium silicate was used, the best result was obtained using 0.2 mL of sodium silicate, 2 mL of oleic acid and 2 mL of MIBC. Under these conditions, the recovery of REE was about 78% and the grade of the first froth product was 42,995 ppm Ce, 24,088 ppm La, 14,236 ppm Nd, 4,388 ppm Pr and 1,570 ppm Y. When conducting flotation after iron minerals were removed by magnetic separation, a better result was obtained; with 2 mL of oleic acid, 2 mL of MIBC and no sodium silicate, the recovery was increased to 90% and the grade was also increased to 58,600 ppm Ce, 28,624 ppm La, 17,160 ppm Nd, 5,348 ppm Pr and 1,971 ppm Y.

Solid state reduction of roast movat chromite ore with carbon was carried out as a function of C/FeO ratio and temperature in the range 800°C to 900°C by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). A two stage mechanism, (1) the reduction of FeO present in Roast Movat with carbon monoxide; and (2) the regeneration of CO by the oxidation of carbon with CO2 was proposed. The rate controlling step is the carbon oxidation reaction. A kinetic equation, that of random nucleation, was proposed. The activation energy for the reduction was determined to be 55800 J/mole and is compared to those activation energies determined for other chromite ores.

The performance of a rotating fixed bed reactor in recovering copper from industrial waste solutions by cementation is studied under various conditions. The rotating fixed bed is made of stacked woven steel screens to take advantage of two features of screens: the ability to present large area per unit volume and their ability to promote high turbulence. Variables studied are initial CuSO4 concentration, bed rotation speed, mesh number of the screens and bed thickness. The presence of baffles was found to increase the rate of cementation. The data were correlated by a dimensionless mass transfer correlation suitable for the design and operation of large scale cementation reactors.

Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted to characterize the floatability of coal pyrite. Unfortunately, many of the results obtained using isolated samples of coal pyrite are not directly applicable to actual coal flotation systems where liberation and entrainment may be the major factors affecting pyrite rejection. In this paper, the association of pyrite with other coal constituents is investigated, and the data are presented for feed and product streams obtained from release analysis tests. Release analysis is used to minimize the effects of entrainment. Particle distributions for each stream are presented as functions of size and composition in order to discern the behavior of free and composite particles.

In many high temperature processes involving liquid melts the common practice is to solidify a fraction of the melt adjacent to the containment wall; a practice that can provide protection of the structural components of the process. The position, shape and transient behavior of these so called "skulls" and/or "ledges" are directly dependent on the thermal process conditions. This paper presents a model of a generic ledge process that can predict the steady shape of a ledge. Two numerical implementations are presented and compared: (1) based on a space grid of continuously deforming finite elements (2) based on a conjugate grid of fixed control volumes and deforming boundary elements.

"This paper gives a brief description of the occurrence and development of the Needle Mountain mine at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited and describes the trackless mining equipment used in this highly mechanized underground operation.Maintenance of the trackless equipment is considered in detail, with particular emphasis on scheduling and control, examination and inspection. All maintenance is carried out in an underground garage, and the facilities for maintenance and field repairs are also described. Maintenance costs are given for various units and the figures for different types of loading and haulage units are compared to support the trend toward larger units and the increasing use of rubber-tired loaders."

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Fiber-optic technology is progressing rapidly, including the development of fiber-optic sensors for many applications. These sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, light weight, small size, high bandwidth, and freedom from electromagnetic influences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of fiber-optic technology to monitor mine atmospheres. This report describes a methane monitor based on differential absorption of infrared light. The monitor can detect methane concentrations as low as 0.2 vol pct as far away as 2 km via fiber-optic cable. The upper range is 100 vol pct methane. Since the system requires no electrical power within the mine, it is intrinsically safe.

"Tue sulphatization of zinc concentrate produced from heated zinc concentrate of Um Ghieg area, eastern desert by ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent is carried out at different conditions to achieve the appreciable formation of soluble sulphates. The maximum zinc recovery as soluble sulphate equfils to 95% upon using 1.5 stoichiometry ammonium sulphate at 600 °C for one hour. Tue obtained leached zinc sulphate solution is subjected· to purification process to prepare high pure zinc metal and zmc compounds such as pure zinc sulphate, zinc caibonate and zinc oxide. The products obtained are analyzed chemically and identified by X-ray analysisTue mechanism and kinetics of the sulphatization process of zinc concentrate are considered where the activation energy is calculated and equals to 33.3 K.J.mol""1 A process flowsheet for the overall sulphatization process of zinc concentrate by ammonium sulphate is proposed.IntroductionConsiderable reserves of zinc ores are present in Um Ghieg area eastern desert, Egypt. Tawil and others (10-16) using ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent for the successful treatment of nonferrous bearing materials.Therefore, the present work aims to study the different factors affecting the sulphatizing roasting process of local zinc coocentrate by anunonium sulphate to extract completely zinc and preparing its main compounds. Taboguilla is a small island located 10 miles outside the Panama Canal Pacific Entrance. In 2002 a fuel distribution facility was installed in order to supply fuel to vessels passing thru the canal. The current capacity of the tank farm is equivalent to 1,100,000 barrels. The demand for marine diesel at this location still exceeds the current capacity, thus an expansion project is currently underway to increase the available space for diesel tanks. There is a total of 800,000 cubic meters to be excavated in order to create the new space. 400,000 cubic meters of that total is basalt rock which will need to be blasted

Nickel is used in a wide variety of applications from consumer goods to industrial uses. In many of these uses, nickel contributes to the environmental attributes of the product. The challenge, however, is measuring that contribution, comparing it to the environmental cost of production, and communicating the role of nickel to the customer in a way that is easy to understand. This paper presents the Nickel Institute?s approach to climate change as a global commodity industry association, and discusses where we stand with regard to some of these key questions. It also identifies issues for the nickel industry moving forward ? challenges that are likely to be common to other commodities.

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

This investigation examined the feasibility of altering the inorganic component of North Dakota lignite by ion exchange. Lignite of specific size consist was washed with various ionic solutions and examined for evidence of exchange. Ions of higher valance substituted preferentially at equivalent concentrations. Results indicate that a major portion of the inorganic material associated with lignite is combined in exchangeable form with the organic component. Particle size of the treated coal is a critical factor in determining the rate of exchange. The data indicate that monovalent ions are easily replaced by divalent and trivalent ions, and the presence of ionic material in slurries containing finely divided lignite significantly increases filtration rates.

An application of the statistical and computer techniques in basic mineral processing research is illustrated by means of a case history involving the study of starch adsorption on calcite. Multi-factorial experimental designs and computer techniques were used for determining the effect of different system variables, such as solution pH, sodium oleate concentration and starch concentration, and to obtain a mathematical model of the response. Response maps enabled the investigators to see the effects clearly and to predict the results of changes in factor levels within the design region. Use of time-shared computers and plotters made data processing and analysis efficient and relatively inexpensive.

"With rapid development of Iron and Steel industry, plenty of metallurgical dusts and sludges are generated, which have not been effectively utilized because of their poor hydrophilicity and bad ballability. Agglomeration and roasting of metallurgical dusts & sludges with a new-type composite binder are studied in this paper. The results indicate that the dosage of the new binders can be decreased to 2.5 wt% from 3.5 wt% when using the wet-grinding process. Under the optimal conditions of briquetting pressure 2070 N/cm2, briquetting moisture content 13 wt%, roasting temperature 1000 °C and roasting time 40 min, the qualities of the green, dry and roasted briquettes meet the requirements of the industry production. The finished products have the compression strength of more than 2000 N/cm2, which can be used as high-quality burdens for blast furnaces.IntroductionWith rapid development of Chinese Iron & Steel industry, there are more and more serious resource shortage and environmental pollution existing. Converter sludges, containing 30% ~ 40 wt% moistures, are typically difficult for recycling [1]. Foreign processing technologies for sludges treatment are relatively advanced including cold-bonded agglomerates for blast furnace, RHF reduction for the dusts and sludges with high content of Zn and Pb, smelting and reduction. Domestic iron and steel companies use a small amount of sludges in sintering. However, the sludges have the characteristics of high moisture and containing harmful impurities, which directly affect the sintering mixture permeability and product quality [2-5]. There are also other technologies such as production of metallized pellets, cooling agents for steelmaking, etc [6]. All of these deficiencies and applied are not in large-scale."
