A study of paleogeography and paleo-environment, coupled with modern geochemical techniques and geologic inference, points to the presence of unconventional platinum group metal deposits in domestic and foreign ultrabasic terranes. During the laterisation of the tectonized and serpentinized mafic and ultramafic rock units, onshore winds provided abundant low temperature chloride to the laterite-saprolite profile. Here, an environment formed where gold, silver and platinum was dissolved, transported and redeposited. Changes in climatic conditions have helped preserve the redeposited metals in fossil laterites. The definition of "unconventional mineral resources" used here is taken from the Cameron Volume of Unconventional Mineral Deposits published by SME-AIME in 1983: "Unconventional mineral resources represent materials of possible economic importance that occur in geological or physical environments that have not been successfully exploited for the particular mineral." (van Rensburg, 1983). Chromite-rich rocks worldwide contain high platinum group metal concentrations. This feature is found in ophiolitic sequences, Alaskan-type ultrabasic complexes or statiform intrusions. Association of platinum group metals with chromite has received much attention. The reason for that associa¬tion, however, is not clear. Much has been written about how and where the platinum group metals occur. It is known that they are present in the spinel lattice, as solid solution elements in sulfides and as discrete platinum group minerals. This article outlines the reasons geologists should be looking at lateritic terranes to determine the feasibility of searching for undiscovered, low-grade platinum group metals amenable to openpit, bulk mining. Laterite-saprolite horizons could contain significant platinum group metals and location of anomalous values on the surface and in the weathered profile can lead to discovery.

After 60 years of operation, coal extraction at Solid Energy New ZealandÆs (SENZ) Strongman Mine, near Rapahoe is scheduled to end in early 2005. Up until 2003 the closure bond for Strongman Mine was only $930, and both SENZ and the West Coast Regional Council (WCRC) agreed that a more realistic level of bonding was required.   A conceptual closure plan has been developed by Golder Associates, and the cost of the work estimated. Closure includes decommissioning of equipment and facilities, rehabilitation and replanting of all disturbed areas and a period of maintenance and monitoring to verify that closure objectives have been met. Significant maintenance allowances are included to cover management of underground fire, subsidence and slope instability. These make up much of the potential ongoing environmental liability at the Strongman. All costs incurred beyond year 1 of closure are discounted to present value. Uncertainty in costs is addressed by Monte Carlo simulation, with an 80 % confidence level adopted.   A bond quantum of $3.0 million has been calculated for the first year of closure at Strongman. A three-year ærollingÆ bond is proposed. Progress will be reviewed annually, with the bond adjusted up or down accordingly. It is then renewed for a further three years. This allows for progressive return of the bond as rehabilitation objectives are met and verified. Similarly, if there are delays in meeting objectives, a proportion of the bond may need to be kept in place for a longer period than assumed. The level of bonding in place for the Strongman operation at any time in the future will therefore reflect the cost to complete the closure work programme.

Development work in western Missouri was continuous during 1933, owing to the shallow depths at which production is obtained and the low operating costs. Unfortunately, no statistics covering the total production of oil and gas during the year are available. No new oil-producing pools were opened in 1933, but the Knoche area in 1.46 N., R.33 W., Cass County, was extended. There are probably less than 100 producing oil wells, all in Cass and Jackson counties, with a combined production of possibly around 150 bbl. daily. Several new gas areas were developed and there were several extensions of old areas, in 1933. Production was extended north by an entirely new pool—the Hammond pool, north of Plattsburg in Clinton Co. (sec. 18, T.55 N., R.31 W., and sec. 13, T.55 N., R.32 W.) where 13 wells were completed, the largest producing 2,332,000 cubic feet. In the Bartle and Marshall pool in secs. 3-4-9-10, T.47 N., R.33 W., Jackson County, four wells opened a new area. The largest well was 1,000,000 cubic feet. There were some small extensions near Independence, Jackson County. Two wells of about 300,000 cu. ft. were completed at a depth of 700 ft. in Kansas City and in a deeper sand than is usually productive. The Shaler area, in secs. 27-34, T.44 N., R.33 W. in Cass County, was extended with several wells, the largest of which was 300,000 cubic feet. The production in the pools mentioned is obtained chiefly from the Henrietta and Cherokee formations of the Pennsylvanian age.

I began my interest in sample preparation when I joined the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in 1962. I worked in the fields of rock dating and stable isotope geochemistry. Preparing a sample could take several days and the analysis took another day or more, so great care was taken with each sample. In 1968 I changed to mineral exploration analysis and was surprised to find that there was much less care in how a sample was taken and prepared. Virtually every sample was processed in the same way. In the use of ring and puck mills, Australia and New Zealand were among the world leaders. It took another ten years before labs in North America changed over from disc mills. In 1975, my partner and I divided our business into two parts. He took the laboratory into his consulting laboratory business and I took the small business that we had started, making ring and puck mills. For the next six years I was RocklabsÆs only employee. In the 1980s and 1990s, sampling specialists like Francis Pitard and Dominique Francois-Bongarcon began to make a difference in the understanding of what constitutes good sampling and preparation practice. They and others took courses on the new concepts of Sampling Theory, as developed by Pierre Gy. The desire for better procedures lead to the development of new machines, including the big bowl pulverisers from Australia, jaw crushers that could crush finely like our Boyd Crusher, rotating dividers of new designs and flow-through ring and puck mills. Other machines did not fare so well, including rolls crushers, cone crushers and hammer mills.

COMPOSITES containing cold-drawn, high-strength steel wires have shown promise for normal and slightly elevated temperature applications, particularly where strength-to-weight ratios or corrosion resistance are important.'-3 Although tensile strengths up to 500,000 psi may be obtained by cold drawing these wires, processing the composite at elevated temperatures will result in a rapid decrease of the wires' strength. In wrought maraging steels, high-strength levels can be obtained by aging at 900' . Because these alloys do not rely on heavy cold working to achieve their strength, and because they do not overage readily, they are of potential interest for use in composites. In view of this, the tensile strengths of composites containing The total heat effect thus represents the heat of formation, AHf of the compound at 273' . Since the heat of solution of tin in the tin solvent bath is zero, AHz = 3( - H273)Sn and Hf is given by: For LaSn3, AH3 had a measured value of 11,285 i 380 cal per g-atom while for La2Sn, the corresponding value was 33,658 870 cal per g-atom. Using the measured data for the compounds and pure lanthanum, a value of -15,150 200 cal per g-atom was calculated for the heat of formation of LaSn, at 273°K, while Hf for La2Sn3 was found to be -28,090 400 cal per g-i&om. SIX different samples of anthracite, each a firm compact lump, were finely pulverized and immediately put in bottles. Portions of these were weighed and placed upon an ordinary water-bath and dried for one hour; the average loss was 1.24. The same portions were then placed in a hot-air oven, and for two hours kept at a temperature of 285' F., and, after cooling in a dry chamber, were again weighed, when there was found a further average loss of 1.22, making a total so far of 2.46. They were then immediately returned to the oven and for two hours more kept at a temperature of 530' F. and cooled and weighed again, when no further loss was found, but an average gain of .55 upon the previous weighing. The same portions were a third time placed in the oven and for about ten minutes kept at the last-mentioned temperature, and then, while still hot, were poured into one-quarter inch glass tubes, each with a bulb at one end, and heated over a Bunsen burner at a temperature below a red heat, when more water vaporized and condensed in small clear globules on the cold parts of the tubes. Fresh portions of the coals were then taken, and the total amount of water determined, and the average was found to be 3.04, or 1.80 more than was found at the temperature of the water-bath, which was perhaps a little below 212' F., and .58 more than at 285' F. In spite of the extensive research and accumulated experience from mining operations, an appropriate pillar design remains an open issue. Due to the shrinking reserve base, present mining operations move to more challenging conditions. There are usually thinner seams and geologic conditions are often unfavorable. For instance, mine roof and floor are weak or deteriorate rapidly when exposed to moisture fluctuations in mine atmosphere. It is common that pillars of current operations are more- squat than several decades ago when the bulk of pillar research have been carried out in thicker seams. The methods of pillars calculations were developed regionally (in particular countries) to suit design needs for the most important seams, from which the majority of coal production was coming (e.g. Pittsburg or Pond Creek seams in the eastern of US). Most of the pillar formulae use similar approach by assigning weights (using constants) to the influence of coal (seam) strength and pillar widthheight ratio on its final strength. That mechanistic approach has sound theoretical base and good data supporting its validity. However, what seems to be missing is a qualification system of the mine conditions, which are outside of the data base or do not comply with the theoretical model applied in pillar strength formulae. This paper attempts to address that issue in two major categories, first when only a drill core data are available, and second during the mine development observations can be made directly on a coal seam. The composition of a coal seam is also addressed, (which often changes rapidly across the reserve), and discussed its influence on pillar's structural performance. In summary a set of practical design rules is presented.

The reality is that in today's world almost half of nearly six billion people on the planet do not have access to commercial energy and the services it brings. Based on UN projections, in 30 years time there are likely to be nearly three billion more people in the world, over 90 per cent of them in countries which are already economically poor. The World Energy Council (WEC), through its 102 member countries, monitors trends and developments and projects future trends. WEC is a non-governmental international body representing all forms of energy and is committed to the sustainable use of energy for all mankind. This paper is based on WEC studies and papers presented at its many conferences and congresses worldwide. Primary energy demand growth is dominated by the developing countries over the next 30 years. The world energy mix is projected to change very little over the next 30 years. Fossil fuel supplies (ie coal, oil and gas) are likely to decline from 77 per cent to 73 per cent, nuclear energy may grow from five per cent to six per cent and renewable energy sources (eg hydro, solar, geothermal, wind, tidal and biomass) could increase from 18 per cent to 21 per cent. World energy consumption is expected to grow by over 50 per cent over the next 30 years. The paper reviews changes in energy demand in the world, particularly in the Asia/Pacific region. Environmental issues are covered, as are developments such as solar energy from space and the status of renewable energy forms. Agendas for action to achieve change are also reviewed.

Mine ventilation can be broadly defined as the branch of mining engineering primarily concerned with the controlled flow of air through mine airways to maintain an acceptable atmospheric environment wherever men work or travel underground. Martinson (1976) has defined three elements of mine ventilation, 1) an engineering element concerned with establishing quality control (removal of dust and gases), quantity control (regula¬tion of air direction and magnitude) and climatic conditioning (temperature-humidity control), 2) a biological element in which an understanding of biological response is used in assessing the mine environment, and 3) a philosophical element requiring judgements as to the degree of risk or worker discomfort that is socially acceptable. Most texts on ventilation, such as Hartman (1961), limit themselves to a discussion of the engineering element. Although also limiting his text to engineering control, Weeks (1928) thoughtfully addresses the other elements in the preface of his book where he states: "Life is brief and happiness elusive under the best of conditions; so beside the commercial aspect must be placed the humanitarian. Is it not reasonable that the operator should give his men a chance to spend their working hours in a comfortable environment, with the danger of sudden death or disability reduced as much as possible?" The statutory requirements of ventilation are, in most countries, established on the basis of biological response as determined by basic research or are dictated by social awareness, often touched off by major disasters, resulting in demands on regulatory bodies for more stringent requirements. ENGINEERS as a group are often criticized because they have been responsible for the development of many technical improvements only to allow the administration of them to pass into the hands of others who may have little understanding of how they operate and little competence in their use. These criticisms are not always justified. There are many engineers who have shown themselves to be great administrators in addition to being great creators or builders, and more and more one sees the engineer demonstrating unusual administrative ability as he moves into the executive ranks. The last five or ten years have seen a new movement developing in this country-a movement brought about through the recognition by business statesmen that successful business administrators and executives just cannot be expected to develop like Topsy, that the management of a company must deliberately take steps to cultivate the proper climate or environment for growth if it wishes to provide an adequate and capable succession of executives in the future. This movement has taken on a number of names-Management Development, Executive Development, Personnel Development-but are these not actually misnomers? Can we develop anybody? In the strictest sense of the word, the author doubts that anyone can change any other person, at least, not much. The change must come from within. Perhaps this movement should be looked at not as a program of developing people but as one of giving people an opportunity to develop themselves. In the Humble Oil & Refining Co. there is an Executive Development Program; maybe it might better be called a Program of Development for Executives.

THE process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. The production of petroleum in Germany during 1932 totaled about 1,608,558 bbl., a slight increase over the 1, 602,517 bbl. produced in 1931. A decline, as shown in Table 1, occurred chiefly in the Volkenroda (Thuringia) field. The total production of the other fields (salt domes), however. reached a new record, about 21 per cent above 1931. SOONER or later intelligent exploration for uranium leads to these questions: Where did the metallic ions that formed the orebodies come from? What processes and geologic factors were involved in ore replacement? These matters, of course, make a big difference in how best to look for orebodies. Before these questions are discussed it might be well to point out other factors bearing on the subject. The whole business of uranium exploration is only a little over ten years old, participation by the public is only about six years old, and real interest and activity by more than a few large mining companies has arisen only in the past two or three years. Throughout this short period, uranium exploration has been affected by the unique influences of necessary security measures and by division of the over- all job into individual projects by a large number of specialists in diverse fields. This has meant that a normal interchange of information on the nature of uranium deposits has really only just begun. Com- pared to the vast amount of published studies on iron, copper, lead, zinc, and gold deposits over the past 50 to 75 years, current knowledge of uranium deposits is in its infancy and much of the pertinent information is still scattered about in a number of unpublished sources. The volume of reports on all phases of uranium exploration is now beginning to mount at a remarkable rate, and geologists with widely varying specialized backgrounds in uranium geology are engaging in spirited debates over the origin of uranium and the relative importance of geologic controls of various deposits.

An attempt to duplicate Rawdon and Mutchler's experiments showing a reversal of hardness with continued rolling gave negative results, indicating that the phenomenon is not general but depends, probably, on local conditions of rolling. IN A recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchler1 gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between-the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. A number of mines in Australia have experienced premature detonations caused by bulk explosives reacting with the rock type being blasted. Premature detonations are extremely high risk events as they are unplanned, occurring at any place, at any time, potentially resulting in high loss (personnel and equipment). Many Australian mines have also experienced spontaneous combustion where spilt explosive reacts vigorously with the rock type. Premature detonation in these cases does not occur due to the lack of confinement and the volume of explosive present, but these reactions could impinge on the surface initiation system and provide an early warning of future premature detonations. The explosive ground reactivity phenomena is not restricted to Australia with similar incidents being reported in North and South America, South Africa, China and South East Asia. All reported incidents have two common denominators, being the presence of sulphide rock types and nitrate based explosives. Both premature detonation and spontaneous combustion result from the same series of reactions of partially weathered sulphides that ultimately result in the violent decomposition of the ammonium nitrate based explosive. A number of relatively easily observable indicators can be used to assess a particular minesiteÆs potential for explosive ground reactivity. The presence of two or more of these indicators means that minesite personnel should contact their explosives manufacturer for assistance in determining if a problem exists and if so then developing strategies to overcome the situation. The paper describes the indicators as well as discussing, via a case study, the holistic approach required to efficiently develop a relevant æSafe and Efficient Blasting ProcedureÆ to deal with explosive ground reactivity problems.

INTRODUCTION The purposes of this conference are aimed mainly at the treatment of fine or ultra fine particles in terms of beneficiation and chemical processing of minerals. For this reason the discussion on leaching will be confined to processes which treat slurries rather than those which treat a large variety of low and medium grade materials by vat leaching or dump leaching techniques. This eliminates such hydro-metallurgical systems as solution mining from consideration. This discussion will focus predominantly upon the behavior of fine particles as associated with their chemistry in leach reactors. Four major sub-headings may be pointed to as encompassing the major areas in which research and engineering design activity should be directed. These are: 1) generation of fine particles, 2) heterogeneous kinetics of leaching, 3) solution chemistry, 4) engineering design and control of flow reactors. Each of these topics will be addressed briefly in this presentation to illustrate current developments and future needs. GENERATION OF FINE PARTICLES As will be pointed out more quantitatively in the next section the generation of fine particles has great influence upon leaching systems inasmuch as in most cases the rate of leaching is related to the surface area of the particles involved. This is true for acid or base leaching of oxide minerals as well as a large variety of sulfides which have been considered in commercial processes and which have in the case of copper received increased attention during the past decade. Mean particle sizes of slurries vary broadly depending upon the type of grinding equipment being used. Macro management of metallurgical industries becomes an important issue in certain situations especially when some government owned metallurgical industries are on the verge or have stopped being feasible. In these cases a government lead macro management in collaboration with domestic institutions and foreign scientific and management expert companies is decisive in order to steer them to a profitable path. This process is not necessary an easy one and incorporates many unknowns and various alternatives. In this paper the macromanagement of the metallurgical industries in Albania will be described as a particular case along with a survey of its mineral deposits, metallurgical facilities and various perspectives for future development. As a country with many mineral resources, the exploration, research, exploitation and processing work of mineral ores before 1990 constituted an important activity of its economy, especially in the exportation of various products of this industry. Since 1990 this activity slowed downs considerably for various reasons and this prompted the necessity of a government lead macromanagement in collaboration with domestic institution and foreign expert companies. This process aims at improving and renewing the technologies in the metallurgical industry in order to transform it into a feasible branch of economy. This goal is being implemented among others through proper geological surveys, rehabilitating and renewing the existing facilities through domestic and foreign investments, the transformation of the ownership or the management from state-owned to local or foreign private companies, etc. Priority is given to the raising of the processing range of the traditional minerals such as chromium, copper, nickel-iron etc. as well as developing new perspective technologies to treat new mineral deposits.

Blasting is the most effective and economical tool available to fragment and move rock for most applications. If properly executed, it can improve down-stream operations such as loading, hauling and crushing. It is not possible, however, to have full control over the energy released by the explosives when a poorly designed blast pattern is used. A poorly designed blast can produce serious damage to equipment and create a potentially hazardous condition to people. Advanced mining technology has been developed to address these potential hazards and optimize the blast pattern. This profiling technology can assist with blast planning and provide quick, precise data about the condition of the rock structure to be blasted. The 3G BlastMetrix system presented here uses three-dimensional (3D) stereo photogrammetry to model the rock mass in a fast, practical and safe manner. Through the image overlapping method, a 3D model is created with thousands of points that provide a significant amount of data regarding geology, geometry and topography conditions. The blasting plan can then be made in a way to optimize the rock fragmentation and avoid areas that could create flyrock. This paper is a case study concerning usage of stereo photogrammic surveying and borehole survey systems in a blasting operation at the Brazilian Quarry, Incopel. One 3D image of a drilled bench was generated using photogrammetry survey technology and the borehole survey data collected using the rodded Boretrak borehole survey system. Utilizing the minimum burden profile reports, explosive loading could be done accurately, resulting in an optimized blast with good heave and fragmentation as well as increased safety.
