The Al-Zn-Mg alloys have been known to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which is based on intergranular cracking arisen from hydrogen embrittlement (HE). The mechanism of HE has not been fully understood yet. In order to elucidate the mechanism of HE, we need to investigate the behavior of hydrogen in the alloys. In this paper, behavior of hydrogen in an Al-5.8%Zn-2.4Mg alloy was investigated by means of hydrogen microprint technique, a method to visualize location of hydrogen emission from specimen surface as silver particles. One side of the tensile test pieces was electrolytically polished and then covered with photographic emulsion. Hydrogen was pre-introduced into the test pieces from opposite side by cathodic electrolytic charging for 30min. Then, the test pieces were stretched with continuing the charging. After that, the specimen was fixed, rinsed, dried and observed with a scanning electron microscope. As a result, silver particles were observed on some grain boundaries.

TO operate the bituminous coal industry in the United States in 1929 cost $770,237,000, of which $30,739,000 was paid for purchased power and $34,947,000 for new machinery and equipment. Equipment aggregated 3,124,000 hp. A mining industry that spends $65,000,000 a year for power and machinery is likely to be fairly well mechanized, and when the machinery in use takes three million horsepower to drive it, the probabilities are that mechanization has been in progress in at least some of the mines for quite a few years. Mechanization in its broadest sense implies machine cutting, power drilling, mechanical loading, electric haulage, mechanical sizing and cleaning, and lesser applications of machinery to mining operations. But the introduction and development of mechanical loading has been the feature of coal mining recently and its extraordinary progress is causing great changes within the industry. REPUBLIC STEEL CORP. and Armco Steel Corp. have joined in a $160,000,000 project for the production of iron ore from Taconite in the Lake Superior mining region. The two companies announced acquisition in equal shares of 100 pct ownership of the stock of Reserve Mining Co., which controls a vast deposit of magnetic Taconite iron ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi range in Minnesota. Through Reserve Mining the two companies will build a plant for manufacturing high grade ore from Taconite near Beaver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The first announcement calls for about a $60,000,000 plant which will be built as soon as plans are completed and will have an annual capacity of about 2,500,000 tons of iron ore pellets. The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct ironmaking pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicates that 69% are less than 2.5 um across, 21 % are 2.5-5 um, and 10% are larger than 5 um. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The interaction and galena flotation with xanthenes and dexanthogen regularities have been de-fined. So, using thermodynamic method of analysis, the thermodynamic stability of [galena - xanthenes - water] system and the behavior of lead xanthenes surface state in solution were devised. Thus, results of cared out calculations and experimental investigation completely coincide with-out depending on witch product of sulfur oxidation is formed in the solution. In additional, was obtained quantitative physico-chemical models for the necessary xanthenes concentration of lead sul-fide complete flotation in the tuning fork of: at ?? values from 7.0 up to 9.0 (or at the formation of lead carbonate PbCO3 ) and at ?? values from 9.0 up to 12 (or at the formation of lead hydro carbonate Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2 Physico-chemical models derived can be used as the criteria for functional units of automation systems to control and regulate the flotation process in mineral processing plants.

Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

It may be borrowed either in 16-mm. size on an 800-ft. reel, or 35-mm. size on a 2000¬ft. reel, the only charge being the cost of returning the film. Douglas D. Rothacker, 729 Seventh Ave., New York City, is prepared to loan free of charge except for transportation each way several films prepared in the plants of the International Nickel Co., 16 mm. with sound. These include: "Nickel High Lights," 35 minutes; "Nickel Mining," 18 minutes; "Nickel Smelting," 18 minutes; "Nickel Refining," 9 minutes; and "Copper Refining," 6 minutes.

Elemental distribution varies widely in the ores, minerals and beneficiated products depending on the constituents. Accurate analysis of each element present in various beneficiated products is utmost required to assess the grade in view of zero waste technology. Hence, the suitable methods and instrumental technique is of prime importance as the distribution of various elements differs in the beneficiated products. Conventional classical technique of analysis is absolute and due to this, it has not become obsolete. Besides, it is much needed for making standards for various relative techniques. Instrumental techniques comprising of X-ray fluorescence, Induced Coupled Plasma Analyzer, Carbon-Sulphur Analyzer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer etc. are important for quick and accurate analysis. However, the selection of these instruments depend on the nature of material to be analyzed. This paper highlights the importance and use of various methods/techniques and instruments involved in the analysis of various ores, minerals and beneficiated products. The continuous digestion technological conditions of phosphate tailings with high magnesium content in sulfuric and phosphoric mixed acid is studied in this paper. The influences of excess coefficient of sulfuric acid, weight liquid to solid, reaction temperature and time on conversion of P2O5 and MgO are discussed. The influence of infiltration capacity of phosphogypsum by the concentration of liquid-phase SO3 is discussed too. Under the optimal technological conditions, the conversion of P2O5 is 95.56% and MgO 98.63%, the filtration rate of phosphogypsum increases with the increasing of liquid-phase concentration of SO3, the optimal apparent concentration of SO3 is 0.135~0.14g? mL-1 in liquid-phase. The filtration rate of phosphogypsum is 1473kg? m-2? h-1. N-P-Mg compound fertilizer was produced by adding magnesia powder and inflating ammonia in filtering medium.

The present paper presents the study of light green smectite clay, from Paraiba, Brazil, submitted to mild acid attack under moderated conditions. Usually, clays are subjected to treatment with strong inorganic acids at temperatures near the boiling point and at high acid concentrations and then, widely used as bleaching agents. The treatment occurred under bellow boiling temperature and at short times of reaction (90°C, reaction times of 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours in close reactor, concentration of the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid 1.5 M, clay/acid solution ratio of 1g/10mL). The purpose of these attacks is to reduce the concentration of impurities providing color, with minimal change in the clay minerals structure, aiming at use in products of high value such as cosmetics and polymer/clay nanocomposites. The raw clay and the attacked samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDS).

The simultaneous sulfation by sulhr dioxide and oxygen of CaO and MgO in calcined CMA (calcium magnesium acetate) were investigated. he experiments were carried out in the temperature range from 700 to 830 "C and at the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to 1 mol %. The oxygen concentration was kept at 5 %. Each sample was calcined completely before the temperature was lowered to the sulfation temperature. According to the ranges of partial pressure of sulhr dioxide and temperature, there exist three regions for the sulfation reaction: region I in which neither oxide is sulfated, region I1 in which only CaO is sulfated, and region 111 in which both oxides are sulfated. It was shown that the MgO in calcined CMA is sulfated at a rate comparable to that of CaO by forming a mixed sulfate phase. Thus, unlike MgO contained in other desulhrization materials, the MgO content in calcined CMA can be fully utilized for flue gas desulhrization.

THE pioneer mining company in Idaho to use airplanes extensively is the Yellow Pine project at Stibnite now owned by the Bradley interests. From 1901 to 1903 the gold boom at Thunder Mountain, in central Idaho overflowed to adjacent areas, prospectors discovering cinnabar and stibnite near the present site of Stibnite in Valley County. The workings were practically abandoned by 1911 through lack of capital and high costs of transportation on pack train roads over several mountain passes open only five months each year. During the World War there was some prospecting and production, and in 1921 twelve of the original companies were merged. Small-scale mining up to 1927 proved that an expenditure of several million dollars would be necessary to operate profitably. These properties were purchased by the Bradley interests during the period of 1927 to 1930. In 1927, there was no mining equipment except hand tools, no telephones, and only one building. "This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:- flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals- outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers.The most important variables affecting the leaching process, such as grain size, mineralogical species, reagent consumption, and so on, were previously studied. While there could be as many directions on regulations as there are viewpoints surrounding the asbestos controversy, there are a few basic criteria that generally will influence government thinking, namely: - their definition of the problem to be regulated, - their interpretation of the scientific evidence available to them, and - their sensitivities to the views of, and the implications for, various interest groups in society. Clearly, different assessments of these criteria by various governments will lead to differing regulatory regimes. The consequence, of course, is a patchwork of non-conforming regulations among nations, with all that thin implies for the distortion of international trade and the unsettling of international relations. I would therefore argue that when governments are examining regulatory action, they should explicitly take into account their common interests in stable and cordial international relations, and when possible, efforts should be made to ensure that movement on regulation is at least, in principle, in accord with the general views of the international community.

The use of roof bolting gave promise of substantial economic benefits to Continuous Miner operations at Michel Colliery. As the first step in the adoption of bolting, 142 anchorage tests, employing six types of anchor shells, were made in three mines. Significant differences were found in the anchorage capabilities of the various shells and the various roof rocks. Introduction S PORADIC attempts at roof bolting had been made at Michel Colliery over a period of ten years. Results were indifferent or inconclusive. A concerted effort was not made, because a compelling need for bolting did not exist. By 1962, however, the advent of Continuous Miners had brought a new significance to roof bolting and, at the same time, the increasing price and scarcity of mine timber made bolting materials more competitive in cost. A fresh appraisal of bolting, therefore, became justified and necessary. The potential benefits of roof bolting at Michel are several.

Traditionally, Mexico has been a mining country. This industry has played a very important role in our country's development, creating jobs, integrating geographical regions - generally very remote from urban communities - and, an essential factor in our present day economy, generating an influx of foreign currency. The Fluorspar mining industry's development started in the 1920?s, but it was not until World War II that its exploitation became consistent and started growing. During the last few years, Mexico has become the world's leading producer, with an annual output of more than one million tons, which directly generates over 3,000 jobs. The actual proven reserves can guarantee fifty years of production at this same annual rate, and it is due to this fact that the producers have not increased their reserves. However, there is concrete information of the existence of several deposits, extending from the northern border to the gulf of Mexico, forming the "Fluorspar Belt? in Mexico.

To investigate the effects of flow geometry on laminar flames, studies are in progress in this laboratory employing Bunsen-type burners with rectangular cross section. Interpretation of these studies requires a determination of the flow velocity at all points of the rectangular cross section for one dimensional steady laminar flow. In addition, values of the velocity gradient at the boundary for such flows are needed in the interpretation of blow-off and flash-back studies with burners of rectangular cross section. The hydrodynamical problem of steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section was solved by Stokes. His results have been quoted by Love21 and by Dryden, Murnaghan, and Bateman,§/ and they have been discussed by Boussines and by Paschoud. It may be noted that the steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section constitutes a hydrodynamical analogue for the problem of the torsion of an isotropic prism of rectangular cross section.

Titanium nitride is a broad-spectrum specific functional material because of its many superior properties. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate synthesis methods of TiN and alloys containing TiN reinforcement. In the current study, with the increase of nitrogen gas pressure and the optimization of routine ball milling parameters, the conventional mechanical ball-milling method can be improved, the nanometers TiH2-TiN composite powder can be synthesized successfully in a shorter time. Nitrogen gas filled in ball mill jar in which the pressure was 0.6 MPa. TiH2 powder was milled under nitrogen atmosphere at a spinning rate of 250 rpm. The results show that the stable TiN is formed after grinding for 2.5 h according to the X-ray diffraction pattern. DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) curves also indicate that milled compound powder adsorbs certain nitrogen gas. The gas adsorbed in TiH2-TiN composite can exist stably below 200 °C.

To reduce operator exposure to drilling noise from roof bolting machines. Background Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a prevalent occupational illness in the United States. Studies indicate that 70%?90% of miners have NIHL significant enough to be classified as a hearing disability. Mine Safety and Health Administration studies indicated that roof bolting machine operators are among those overexposed to noise. Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling is the loudest noise source to which a roof bolting machine operator is typically exposed and contributes greatly to the operator?s noise exposure. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has further determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. To address this noise hazard, NIOSH developed a collapsible drill steel enclosure (CDSE) to encapsulate the drill steel during the drilling portion of the roof bolting machine duty cycle. In addition, NIOSH is collaborating with J. H. Fletcher & Co. in the continued development of a CDSE.
