Rock bolt integrity is a critical issue for the mining industry because of its influence on the safety of mining operations. Guided ultrasonic wave testing of the defects associated with resin-anchored rock bolts was investigated. Axisymmetrical and three-dimensional finite element models were built, one of a partially encapsulated bolt and the other of a bolt with a simulated local corrosion crack. Experimental bolts were then installed in a testing block and typical responses were compared to finite element models of different defect scenarios. Encouraging results were obtained for the smaller axisymmetrical and three-dimensional finite element models, as well as during the experimental investigation. It is recommended that software with energy-absorbing elements should be utilized to consider higher frequencies and longer bolts. Once the integrity of models such as these has been established, the models could in principle be used to train neural networks for use in commercial equipment to determine the integrity of the installed bolt.

Hydrogen fuelcells are a known technology, having been applied to stationary (e.g equipment, buildings, power plants) and vehicle applications (e.g transit buses, space shuttles). There is currently a growing need to provide alternate power systems to diesel fuel for underground mining vehicles to improve underground air quality and reduce production costs and green house gas emissions. To date, however, fuelcells have not been exposed to underground mine air and physical conditions. A testing program was carried out to provide information on the vulnerabilities of fuelcells as part of a number of proof-of-concept projects to apply hydrogen power to underground mining vehicles. The fuelcell type of choice for the industry, the Proton Exchange Membrane, would function at the range of temperatures encountered in underground and surface operations, and use hydrogen that is stored under low pressure and risk. A small fuelcell stack was tested in a cooperative project between CANMET, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, INCO, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Sandia National laboratories and H-Power. This article will review the tests carried out to measure the effects from high humidity, mineral dust, diesel emission gasses and diesel particulate matter as well as from shock and vibration provided to the unit in underground conditions, at INCO?s 175 Orebody minesite and INCO?s Stobie Mine. The test results provided will show that the unit was not affected by the underground conditions: physically and electrically the unit performed without any reduction in operation or adverse effects imposed.

The writer of this paper, however, is alone responsible for statements herein contained and since he has often found it necessary to rationalize apparently conflicting opinions of recognized authorities on this little-known subject, he will welcome constructive criticism from the trade.Two types of diamond are extensively used for industrial purposes. One type, known as bort or bortz (boort, boart, bowr, etc.), consists of diamonds of the gem variety but unfit for cutting into gems. They may be colorless, yellow, brown, or gray. The other type, carbonado, known in the trade as ""carbon"" or ""black diamond,"" differs greatly from the white diamond, being opaque and apparently amorphous or noncrystalline. Actually, instead of forming a large single crystal as in a gem stone, carbon diamond comprises a mass of microscopic crystals that interlock to form a tough, homogeneous material with no planes of cleavage. It is found in various colors -- black, dark green, brown, and gray -- but usually it has .a dark lustrous black surface, with a resinoid or submetallic appearance, often resembling fine-grained steel. Upon exposure to the air the broken surface gradually darkens to an ash-gray color. Ballas is a special type of carbonado in which the crystals are definitely-oriented around a central nucleus. They are harder and tougher than ordinary carbonado but are much scarcer. The Cape ballas is reputed to be not quite so tough as Brazilian ballas but tougher than carbon or bort.The diamond crystals are isometric and take a variety of forms. The cleavage is octahedral and well marked. A crack is easily -started parallel to an octahedral face, and bort or gem diamonds are notoriously brittle, especially when subjected to sudden shock. Even carbonado, while it has a high resistance to slowly applied pressures, may be chipped or broken by a sharp blow.Exposed to radioactive rays, the diamond becomes phosphorescent; this property is often utilized to distinguish it from quartz, topaz, or glass. The unusually high refractive index likewise aids in its identification in the case of a more or less transparent stone. At the temperature of the electric arc, diamond is converted into graphite, another form of Carbon but one of the softest mineral substances. At a much lower temperature, as low as 1,5620 F., the diamond may be burned like ordinary carbon in an atmosphere of oxygen, and according to some authorities there is danger of burning a diamond if overheated even in air."

"Plant design parameters for gold extraction, leach residence time and cyanide consumption are generally determined from standard bench-scale bottle roll or agitation leach tests. The application of laboratory data to process design has essentially evolved from the testing of oxide or low cyanide-consuming ores. Such scale-up factors may not be appropriate for ores that deplete cyanide and oxygen since this interferes with gold extraction kinetics. High cyanide-consuming ores also exacerbate the differences between the conditions applicable to small batch tests and large continuous operations. Testing a reactive high-sulfide South American ore deposit necessitated the re-evaluation of conventional bench-scale cyanidation procedures. Pulp density can be a major factor affecting the results for plant design purposes and should be treated as a test work variable. As with high clay-bearing ore, where pulp viscosity can hinder mass transfer, minimizing the influence of test equipment on gold extraction kinetics may require low pulp densities. This introduces interpretative complexity since cyanide consumption changes as a function of pulp density. Activated carbon also consumes cyanide, so its effect has to be accounted for in the case of carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant flowsheets. Since cyanide is an expensive reagent, often a major component of plant operating costs, it is important that the scale-up of cyanide consumption from laboratory to plant be representative. The traditional method of reporting cyanide consumption in bench-scale testing is questioned since it takes credit for residual free cyanide in leach tails. The projected plant consumption may be better estimated by using the total cyanide addition in a laboratory test. We propose a test work protocol that categorizes the cyanide consumption into its components but requires more extensive testing to generate design data. The ultimate validation of scale-up factors used by project engineers requires rigorous bench-scale versus commercial plant comparative data. Such data are not readily available.IntroductionMajor factors in the design of a gold processing plant are gold recovery, leach residence time and cyanide consumption. These parameters are important determinants of project revenue and costs and, thereby, potentially of project financial viability. Estimates of the associated design criteria for a commercial plant are normally generated from laboratory cyanidation, carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tests using standard procedures (Angove, 2005). The key question is whether the standard laboratory test work procedures developed historically for low reagent consuming ores are appropriate for ores that are highcyanide and oxygen consumers.The present paper examines test procedural factors that can influence the test work results and, therefore, their interpretation for design scale-up purposes. The study refers in particular to a high cyanide-consuming sulfide ore. The ore was being tested to develop scoping level engineering design criteria for a proposed project in South America."

Studies on stress tell us that shifting your focus away from what is causing your stress increases your ability to cope. Counting to 10 is one method. Science proves mom right. The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

Mining ‘as usual’, until the most recent decades has resulted in limited landform planning and a general lack of mine waste landform design. Material characterisation, mine planning and dedicated professionals undertaking these tasks were rarely available or in place at the majority of mines. This has led to landform instability, erosion, sediment and poor quality water emanating from mine landforms. In many cases rehabilitation and reclamation failed and these sites have ‘landform features’ that are difficult to relinquish or leave and have little or no apparent land use. In many cases mined landscapes around the world have resulted in a less functional and degraded environment, with deleterious impacts on surrounding ecosystems.This situation is now slowly being addressed, as global companies, academics and practitioners and their organisations have started to exploit the ideas from an integration of earth sciences and mining through the application of planning software dedicated to the design of landforms.This development has had its genesis primarily in the United States. We suggest that process has been driven, in recent decades, by the application of resources in response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), (USA Congress 11 December 1980) and other mine reclamation legislation enacted by federal and states regulators in the USA. The combining impact has seen a huge transfer of capital back from the public purse and ‘potentially responsible parties’, into abandoned mines to affect control, remediation, and reclamation/rehabilitation of those mines.Given this investment in rehabilitation and reclamation, people engaging in the business of landform planning have had the opportunity to address landform reclamation of historic and active sites. The skills of engineers and scientists with improved technology, waste rock characterisation and modelling tools have been combined resulting in the evolution of landform design and in mine planning of active mines. This has delivered cost-effective, sustainable mine closure designs for over 30 years. Integration of mine design with an understanding of geomorphic principals and the natural landscape, coupled with waste and soil characterisation, yield a positive result. Recently work has been applied across large and small-scale projects by companies. As these processes develop, ideas and concepts are evolving that active mines, or mines in the early planning stages, could use to help reduce double handling, and in the long run reduce overall project and closure costs, more effectively attain the desired final land use, and enhance the industry’s reputation and licence to operate.CITATION:Leidich, T,?Lacy, H?and Van?Zyl,?M,?2014. "Stress strain curves characteristics, deformation and strength properties, and failure process and characteristics of sandstone samples under different stress states were analyzed through triaxial compression tests carried on using TAW-2000 microcomputer control electro-hydraulic servo rock triaxial test system. The experimental results reveal that peak strength, residual strength, elasticity modulus and deformation modulus increase linearly with confining pressure, and failure models transform from fragile failure under low confining pressure to ductility failure under high confining pressure. Macroscopic failure forms of samples under uniaxial compression was split failure paralleling to the axis of samples, while macroscopic failure forms under uniaxial compression was shear failure, the shear failure angle of which decreased linearly with confining pressure. There were significant volume dilatation properties in the loading process of sandstone under different confining pressure, and then based on acoustic emission damage and volumetric dilatation damage the damage evolution properties of samples were analyzed, and damage constitutive model were established, realizing the real-time quantitative evaluation of samples damage state in loading process. INTRODUCTIONDamage is a phenomenon that micro defects in material under monotonic loading or reloading will lead to progressive decrease of the cohesion and damage of volume units. Many scholars at home and abroad have carried out systematic researchers on damage evolution characteristics and constitutive model of rock, and have achieved a series of remarkable results in this field. Lu Y.D. (2004) studied the complete stress-strain curve’s characteristics of marble under triaxial compression, and established the bilinear elastic-linear strain softening-residual ideal plastic damage constitutive model. Ren J.X. (2001) studied the damage evolution laws of coal and rock mass by computerized tomography triaxial loading system, realizing the quantitative evaluation of damage state. Zhang Z.L. (2011) studied the deformation and failure mechanism of strong weathered sandstone by triaxial compression test, and analyzed the damage evolution processes and established the damage evolution equations based on the density method. Li X.J. (2012) studied the microscopic damage characteristics of siltstone under triaxial compression by scanning electron microscope and digital image technology, and analyzed the statistical distribution characteristics of cracks azimuth angle, length, width. Zhou J.W. (2012) studied the strength, deformation and fracture damage characteristics of sandstone by uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading tests, and defined damage variable based on linear damage mechanics theory and acoustic emission (AE). Cao W.G. (2006) established a new damage model and a statistical damage constitutive model of rock under specific confining pressure according to the force of damaged part and undamaged part in rock on the base of statistical damage theory. Li S.C. (2014) studied the damage evolution characteristics in the whole uniaxial compression process of sandstone by electrical resistivity and AE, and proposed a status qualitative criterion for rock damage."

"More than 25 years of uninterrupted research on ground support technology for underground mines has been undertaken at the University of Wollongong. This research has resulted in significant findings on tendon characteristics and strength properties. The paper focuses on the development of the fourth generation of cylindrically shaped shear test apparatus for assessing tendon performance in shear. This shear apparatus is known as the MK-IV Double Shear Box or Naj Aziz Double Shear Box (NADSB), and is based on the experience gained from the development of previous versions of rectangular double shear boxes. The new NADSB is circular in shape and is fitted with a truss system, which permits friction free shear testing of tendons across joint planes. A series of double shear tests were carried out on a number of cable bolts commonly used in Australian mines, both plain and indented wires, under varied pretension loads. The results were compared with similar test results using rectangular shaped double shear apparatus, with and without friction across joint faces. The significance of wire surface roughness and increased initial pretension loads are discussed and conclusions made, suggesting that indented wires are inferior in shear compared with plain cable bolts. The general test procedure of the NADSB is described and different concrete reinforcement techniques are reported. The influence of external and internal confinement of the concrete medium blocks in a circular double shear box contributed to consistent test results with a minimum of lateral and axial cracks occurring in the host medium.INTRODUCTIONThe use of long tendon ground support elements (cable bolts) is now a common practice in modern underground coal mines, hard rock mines, tunnels and other underground structures. Due to their material properties cable bolts contribute significantly to the overall ground reinforcement provided by a support system. Cable properties in tension and shear are in many cases vital to maintaining a safe and productive underground environment. Accordingly, tension and shear properties must be assessed accurately using both valid and reliable methods.Load transfer property testing of tendons has been studied over several decades with much of the early research focused on the pull and shear testing of solid rock bolts and hollow bolts (like Swellex and split set tube bolts), as these elements were used extensively at this time. It was not until the 1970’s that the use of cables for ground reinforcement developed, and as such highlighted the need to extend load transfer property testing to include shear strength of cable bolts. Initially, the discarded hoisting ropes were used for ground support in metal mines, particularly in stopping wall support and then late in 1980’s cable tendons began to use in coal mines."

"Thinly-laminated silty shale that falls like ""stack rock"" is always difficult to support in underground coal mines. With thin laminations of 2.5 to 52 mm (0.1 to 2 in) thick and weak bonding between laminations, the roof is much weaker under horizontal stress than under vertical load. Buckling of thin laminations and cutters are common signs of initial failure for this type of roof. When a roof fall occurs, it is mostly above the primary bolted horizon with a fiat top and steep breaking angle above the pillar ribs. Because silty shale is brittle, roof falls mostly develop without significant roof sagging. With thick, laminated silty shale, it is difficult to build a strong solid beam with short primary bolts. Longer bolts, straps, and supplementary cable bolts are required. Since installation of longer primary bolts in low seam mining is operationally inefficient, supplementary bolting is important to maintain overall roof stability. The bolting plan should also be chosen based on the geologic hazard map, which indicates the distribution and thickness of laminated silty shale, as well as the transition areas.To effectively support the thinly-laminated silty shale roof, an area with the same type of roof in a low seam mine was monitored for approximately four months. The mine had experienced roof falls while using different bolting systems and mine orientations in past years. The roof support in the area was studied through geologic mapping, roof scoping, and testing of different bolting plans. "Major coal mining areas in eastern China have entered into the deep mining state. Gas pre-drainage, which has been successful at shallower depths, is not suitable at greater depths because of complex conditions. Coal permeability, which is closely related to the damage behavior of coal, is the most important parameter in determining gas migration and gas drainage in a coal seam. To achieve an optimal gas drainage design in a deep mining state, the damage and permeability evolutions of coal should be further studied. The progressive failure process of coal has been analyzed by conducting a series of triaxial loading and unloading tests. The development of coal fractures has been successfully quantified, and the corresponding characteristic stress points have been obtained by using Martin’s fracture model and the stress-strain curve. Coal will produce plastic deformation, and its permeability will rapidly increase when the stress level reaches damage expansion stress. INTRODUCTION Coal mine methane (CMM) is a general term for all methane released during and after mining operations. CMM is both a potentially valuable energy and a serious hazard in active coal mines. Degassing coal seams is important for mitigating this hazard and results in the beneficial recovery of a cleanburning, low-carbon fuel resource (Karacan, Ruiz, Cotè, and Phipps, 2011). The permeability of coal is a key parameter in determining CMM production, coalbed methane (CBM) production, CO2-enhanced coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) production, and CO2 storage in coal seam reservoirs (Connell, Lu, and Pan, 2010; Chen et al., 2011; Perera, Ranjith, and Choi, 2013). Significant research has been condcuted to the study of the evolution of coal permeability. These studies revealed that coal permeability evolution is controlled by the competing influences of effective stress and sorption-induced coal deformation. Chen et al. (2011) investigated the influence of an effective stress coefficient and sorption-induced strain on the evolution of coal permeability. Robertson and his team (Robertson, 2005; Robertson and Christiansen, 2005) measured sorption-induced matrix strain and permeability changes with regard to CO2, CH4, and N2. They found that the compressibility is not constant in a natural coal sample. Karacan (2007) conducted a series of experimental tests to study the swelling-induced volumetric strains internal to a stressed coal associated with CO2 sorption. Liu et al. (2016) investigated the effects of matrix swelling area propagation on the permeability evolution by using both natural and reconstituted samples. Many coal permeability models have been developed to describe the permeability evolution under uniaxial loading, biaxial strain, hydrostatic confining pressure, triaxial strain, and triaxial stress. Recently, some analytical permeability models have been developed to describe the anisotropic permeability behavior (Palmer, 2009; Pan and Connell, 2011; Robertson and Christiansen, 2005; Wang, Zang, Wang, and Zhou, 2014; Chen, Pan, Liu, and Connell, 2012)."

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

"A process mineralogy study was conducted to guide the development of a process for the extraction of vanadic oxide (V2O5) and aluminum compounds from bone coal and its ash as well as the production of byproducts. Results show that to extract the targeted metals at higher recovery rates, one must find a suitable agent capable of destroying the structure of the mica and breaking down the lattices in which these metal-bearing minerals occur. For such minerals, metal extraction efficiency is usually low if the approach is simply adding an oxidant that cannot destroy the structure. In this research, a byproduct fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) at 20 percent concentration from an operating phosphate fertilizer plant was found to be powerful and effective for the leaching of vanadium-bearing minerals such as mica. This environmentally friendly process improved the leachability of valuable constituents in the bone coal significantly, with the leaching rate of V2O5 increased to 94 percent, from 83 percent, and that of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) increased to 75 percent, from 40 percent. X-ray diffraction and chemical analyses showed that the structure of mica can be destroyed using fluosilicic acid either alone or in combination with sulfuric acid. Based on the process mineralogy study, a processing flowsheet was tested, which resulted in a final V2O5 powder product with purity of 99.2 percent and an overall recovery rate of higher than 85 percent. The flowsheet consists of leaching, ion exchange and ammonium precipitation. With this process, various byproducts could also be generated, including aluminum fluoride, cryolite, aluminum sulfate, calcium sulfate, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride and cement admixtures.IntroductionVanadium is an important rare metal broadly used in the production of steel alloys and nonferrous alloys as well as in the chemical field as a catalyst. Vanadium-bearing bone coal and clays are abundant in China, and they contain other valuable metals such as aluminum. Bone coal is a type of carbonaceous shale. The vanadium-bearing minerals mainly exist in mica, kaolin, iron oxides, tourmaline and garnet. According to previous studies (Xiao, 2007; Xu, 1989; Xu and Chen, 1991; Ji and Xu, 1991; Chen and Xu, 1992; Xu and Heng, 1992), vanadium occurs from the isomorphous substitution of V3+ for Al3+ or Fe3 + in the crystal lattices of mica, tourmaline, garnet, dolomite and aluminosilicate minerals. In iron oxide and kaolin minerals, vanadium appears as an adsorption form. The isomorphous substitution of vanadium is more stable in tourmaline, garnet and silicate minerals. Therefore, vanadium in bone coal may exist in three phases: vanadium-containing kaolin and oxides, vanadium-containing mica, and tourmaline and garnet (Xu and Chen, 1993; Xu and Zhang, 1993; Xu and Wang, 1994; Feng, et al., 2005; Lin and Fan, 2001)."

The control of flotation plants is by no means trivial. Flotation is one of the most interactive minerals? processing operations. The interactive nature of flotation circuits results in oscillations of levels and hence of grades and recoveries. Also, poor level setpoint tracking and disturbances have negative influences on grades and recoveries. The result is an unstable plant with limited scope for optimization. An advanced controller, FloatStarTM, has been developed to provide tight control and to reduce the amount of disturbances in flotation levels. It has been shown on a number of plants that the system results in faster and better setpoint tracking, better regulatory control and faster settling times after start-ups and disturbances. The successful stabilization provided by FloatStar has made it easier to investigate the area of optimization on flotation circuits. Mintek has identified the need for a more meaningful set of setpoints or aeration rates to use as a basis for control than levels and have advocated flow control by looking after residence times. When the feed conditions change, the ideal solution would be an algorithm or strategy that finds the new optimum conditions rather than just having an unguided hunt from the previous point. A multivariable flow-optimizing algorithm, a new module in FloatStar, has been developed to calculate optimum level setpoints and/or aeration rates that will aim to optimize the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit. "The aim of this research work was to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) from canola oil using KOH loaded on y-Al203 support as a heterogeneous catalyst. Different parameters such as effects of the molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst amount and reaction time on the yield were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterization of the catalysts. A biodiesel yield of 86.67% was obtained under catalyst preparation and transesterification conditions of calcinations temperature of 773 K, 4 h of reaction time at 338 K, and using 3.5 wt% catalysts and molar ratio of methanol/oil of 15:1. The leaching of potassium species in the spent catalyst was observed.1. IntroductionBiodiesel is an eco-friendly and alternative energy source for diesel engines that can be synthesized by transesterfication of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohols [1 ]. There are four principal approaches to the synthesis of biodiesel involving the transesterification of the triglycerides of the plant oils and animal fats: base catalysis [2], acid catalysis [3-5], employing supercritical alcohol conditions [6] and enzyme catalysis [7]. The commonly used homogeneous catalysts are NaOH, KOH and their alkoxides. Homogeneous alkali-catalyzed transesterification is much faster than acidcatalyzed transesterfication [8]. However, a large amount of water is required to transfer the catalysts from the organic phase to a water phase after the reaction. Therefore, it is considerably more costly to separate the catalyst from the produced solution [9]. These disadvantages could be removed by use of a heterogeneous catalyst [10]. The use of heterogeneous catalysts eliminates the neutralization step, hence it results much easier to separate from liquid products. Also, they can be designed to give a higher activity and selectivity and to have longer catalyst lifetimes [11]. A large number of different heterogeneous catalysts have been synthesized for biodiesel production. For example, calcined Mg-Al hydrotalcites [12], zeolite and metal catalysts [13], metal oxides such as calcium oxide (CaO) [14], magnesium oxide (MgO) [15], zirconium oxide (Zr02) [16], and supported catalysts [17] have been investigated as heterogeneous catalysts. CaO and MgO are most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production [18]. In this present work, we aimed at developing an efficient catalyst for transesterification of canola oil. We have prepared KOH/ Al203 by impregnation and applied to determine the optimum conditions for biodiesel production. Three different variables including reaction time , alcohol to oil molar ratio and catalyst loading with may influence the quality of the produced biodiesel were optimized. Moreover, SEM (scan electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF were used for characterization of the catalysts."

The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

Brothers volcano (34°51.7?S, 179°03.6?E) is a large caldera volcano that forms part of the active Kermadec arc south of 32° S, NE of New Zealand. It is an elongate edifice striking NW-SE that is ~11-13 km long by 7-8 km across. The caldera has a basal diameter of 3-3.5 km and is surrounded by 350-450 m high walls with the floor 1,850 m deep. A volcanic cone of dacite composition rises 350 m from the caldera floor and partially coalesces with the southern caldera wall. Much of the caldera construction and the location of the hydrothermal vent sites are controlled by intersecting basement structures. Three hydrothermal sites have been recognized at Brothers; NW caldera, SE caldera and cone. Multiple hydrothermal plumes were mapped from the bottom of the caldera upwards to a depth of 900 m and originate from two of the sites; one on the NW caldera wall the other atop the cone. Analyses of these plumes show that the two vent sites are chemically distinct. The cone site itself hosts three distinct vent fields (summit, upper flank, NE flank) that in 1999 had plumes (mainly from the summit) containing relatively high concentrations of gas with a shift of -0.27 pH units (proxy for CO2) and H2S concentrations up to 4,250 nM, particulate Cu (PCu) of 3.4 nM, total dissolvable Fe (TDFe) of 4,720 nM, TDMn up to 260 nM and Fe/Mn values between 4.4 and 18.2. However, in 2002 plumes from the summit vent field had noticeably lower concentrations of PCu (0.3 nM), TDFe (175 nM), and Fe/Mn values of 0.8, although similar TDMn (220 nM) and shift in pH (-0.22) suggesting a state of flux for this site. By contrast, plumes originating from the NW caldera site have much less gas with a pH shift of -0.09 units and no detectable H2S, TDFe up to 955 nM, TDMn up to 150 nM, and Fe/Mn values of 6.4, and have not changed their composition over the same three year interval indicating a more chronic hydrothermal system. Plume d3He results show helium is decoupled from more near-surface vent fluid sources although a shift in R/Ra values from 6.1 ± 0.5 in 1999 for the combined vent sites to 7.2 ± 0.1 in 2002 indicates a less radiogenic input of helium over three years, suggestive of a greater magmatic input to the system.

Acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) is routinely derived from waste rock, tailings, pit wall rock, underground mine voids, heap leach pads, ore stockpiles, concentrate stockpiles and even slag piles. In many jurisdictions, there is an assumption that tailings materials represent the highest AMD risk. This is likely due to their highly sulfidic and ultra-fine grained nature, and the fact that they occur in large tonnage, partially unsaturated deposits. These characteristics are not unreasonably associated with reactive and therefore highly polluting mine waste materials. Interestingly, however, the high sulfide content and highly reactive nature of tailings achieves the rapid consumption of oxygen in tailings pore spaces. This oxygen depletion can limit or halt sulfide oxidation throughout much of the tailings pile. Oxygen can only be resupplied to the tailings via atmospheric exchange at the air-tailings interface. The grain size of most tailings materials limits this resupply to a diffusion related process that only affects the uppermost 100–2000 mm. Hence sulfide oxidation in tailings can be inherently self-limiting. Unfortunately, the same cannot be concluded for waste rock materials.Using a unique site assessment strategy that focuses on quantifying acidity fluxes from various domains at a mine site, it has become increasingly evident that sulfidic waste rock produces the majority (typically 60–80 per cent) of the soluble acid and metalliferous pollution at most active and decommissioned sulfide-bearing mine sites. Whether sulfidic waste rock is disposed in engineered above ground facilities, backfilled into pits or even underground voids, it remains the primary source of pollutants for decades to centuries.Conventional end-dumping waste rock practices result in angle-of-repose pathways for air and water, and these internal fabrics exacerbate sulfide oxidation (ie pollution generation) and discharge from waste rock materials. The primary aim of many cover systems is to retard the access of air and water to these conduits. Recent thinking is that more emphasis needs to be directed at strategic waste rock pile construction practices, and less reliance placed on thin soil cover systems to prevent AMD.Waste rock pile construction approaches that minimise porosity and permeability but raise the retained moisture content and enhance water residence times have the potential to lower sulfide oxidation rates and thereby improve water quality outcomes. The Bureau of Mines constructed a process research unit (PRU) to demonstrate new technology for extracting zinc from sphalerite concentrates. Up to 9 kg/hr of sphalerite (ZnS) concentrate was reacted at ambient pressure in the PRU with 80 pct sulfuric acid at 160° to 180° C to produce zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur. The PRU consisted of a three-stage glass reactor system: a 4-liter premix stage in which feed was slurried with 78 to 82 pct H2S04, a 40-liter stirred reactor, and a ISO-liter settling stage in which high reaction conversions were effected and excess H2S04 for recycle was separated from insoluble ZnS04 and sulfur. Evolution of sulfur-containing gases was minimized by sub-surface addition of acid feed slurry to the stirred reactor and by exclusion of air from the reactor to prevent the oxidation of elemental sulfur. Conversion of zinc to zinc sulfate averaged over 99 pct at the optimum acid concentration of 80 pct. Total sulfur losses (primarily S02) were less than 2 pct of the sulfur in the sphalerite. Elemental sulfur remained in the insoluble portion of the settled reactor product after leaching with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing sulfuric acid. The sulfur residue contained 75 to 89 pct sulfur. Neutral zinc sulfate, required for zinc electrowinning processes, was separated from the sulfuric acid leach solution by crystallization at -15° C as zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnS04?7H20). The crystallization operation simultaneously effected a partial concentration of the recycled electrolyte solution by removing water.
