(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. I FEAR most of the Institute members are already weary of the perennial controversy about the apex law. I feel that way about it myself now, though I have been guilty of considerable contribution to the discussion in the past. The discussion does not seem to perceptibly influence previously held views and I would not again break into print on the subject but for the urgent invitation of the Chairman of our, Law Committee. This energetic and able member has firmly determined to secure a revision of the mining law and among other things to eliminate the so-called apex provision from the U. S. mining statutes. He is, however, fair about it and has invited me to make "the strongest possible argument in its favor." I am suspicious that he is acting on the psychological principle that it is usually easier to convince an audience against a cause vigorously but unsuccessfully defended than against one wholly mute. Nevertheless, I realize that personally he wishes me no harm, much as he hates the apex law, and so am willing that the Institute have whatever benefit may accrue from my taking up again the unpopular side of the discussion. I say this because the attitude of a large part of our "articulate" membership seems irreconcilably hostile; their minds are made up; favorable consideration is foreclosed; and they become impatient and even sarcastic at any attempt to elucidate a favorable view of the apex law. The exact question for discussion at the present time is not whether on abstract, or any other considerations, the apex law is the best possible rule, but the very different proposition whether, after nearly 50 years of statutory life and much longer as a practically universal miners' custom, it is now just and expedient to repeal the apex law.

Resources for Freedom, a report by the President's Materials Policy Commission, commonly termed either the Paley report, after its chairman, or the PMPC report, was issued in June 1952. The data collecting and assembly work for its preparation were done in 1951. The statistical base in most cases was 1950. It reviewed our economy and predicted what it will be in 1975.* The bases for the predictions were given. Consideration was given not only to statistical data and trends but also to technological changes taking place and likely to take place in the ensuing 25 years that will affect our economy. The supply of raw materials was studied and predictions made as to the availability of supply and the sources in 1975. One of the industries covered was iron and steel. For the most part the report did not attempt to provide a curve showing annual growth for any industry or commodity. It contrasted 1950 with the probable status in 1975. Interpolation between these dates is difficult and the Commission did not intend that it be used for short interim intervals. It is possible in 1958 to show the actual changes from 1950. The magnitude of the changes illustrates the agreement with some interpolation of the Paley report. Statistical comparisons can be general only because the Commission did not postulate a linear change. A study of the iron and steel industry will show if the general predictions have been realized or if gross errors were made. This paper is concerned with such an analysis. It is concerned with the production and consumption of crude, not fabricated products. It attempts to bring various facets of technical and statistical information on the industry up to date.

Note: The figures quoted and used herein have been collected and furnished by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Without the help and willing co-operation of the officials of the Burreau, this study would not have been possible. Introductory and General Coal has one unique quality that distinguishes it from other minerals, one that is too, often forgotten. This is the quality of ubiquity. No other single mineral supplies such a wide and varied range of human requirements nor, up to the present, is there any indication of a rival in this regard. There is, consequently, reason for individual study of each of the major portions of the overall market for coa1. The provision of heat for our homes is a necessity of life in our Northern climate and the largest single source of this heat is coal. It is intended to present here a factual survey of the use ?of coal in home heating throughout Canada and the effect of these requirements upon the production of coal and the development of this phase of the mineral industry. The coals used for house heating in Canada fall into two more or less distinct classes, the very low volatile fuels such as anthracite and including coke, and the bituminous coals, including the sub-bituminous and lignite types. The bituminous coals are, of course, consumed in very large quantity by industry and the railways and are the most important type both in tonnage and in respect to the area supplied. Canada consumes annually for all purposes some 4,400,000 tons of anthracite, 4,300,000 tons of coke exclusive of Petroleum coke, and some 40,000,000 tons of bituminous coals. This is a fair measure of the relative importance to the overall economy although it will be seen later that the concentration of the household use of anthracite and coke into one area does create a considerable problem.

THE coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive force? of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. A detailed description of this apparatus may be found elsewhere.2 The coercive force determinations of magnetic materials are inter-esting because of the relationship established by Gottschalk,4 who showed a linear relationship between the magnetization coercive force and the specific surface of comminuted particles. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub-sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or, elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. The turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determina-tion of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

The Saganoseki flash furnace was built in 1973. The steel frames of the flash furnace were designed to absorb the expansion of refractories and contain expansion-absorbing materials between their frames and the skin plate. Expansion and deformation resulted in the furnace settler because of the repeated increase and decrease in temperature from more than 30 maintenance shutdowns. Preliminary investigations were conducted to confirm the condition of the settler, and it was found that partial cracks accompanied the expansion in the lower layer of the refractories. As a result, the risk of molten-matte leakage increased. Based on the above investigation, it was decided that the entire settler should be replaced by introducing a spring-displacement structure that was capable of maintaining the furnace integrity over an extended period. The difficult redesign and rebuilding of the Saganoseki flash furnace was accomplished successfully and safely in 76 days from September to December 2017, as planned. Because of various redesigns, the furnace was changed to a flash-smelting furnace that can withstand higher thermal loads based on recent trends of copper concentrate with increased sulfur and reduced copper. The new furnace is operating smoothly at present. INTRODUCTION The flash-smelting furnace of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd. Saganoseki Smelting & Refinary commenced operation in 1973, with an original designed feeding rate of 71 t/h. As a result of facility remodeling and operational improvements, shown in Figure 1, the feeding rate was increased to 215 t/h in recent years. After more than 40 years of operation, the original settler in the melt holding section of the flash furnace underwent significant expansion and deformation.

THE success of various operations in the manufacture of optical glass depends, in a large measure, on the ability to maintain proper heat control. A good pyrometer system is, therefore, a very necessary part of the equipment needed. Men of long experience in dealing with high temperatures, who have acquired through constant practice the ability of judging approximate temperatures by means of color, are undoubtedly valuable, but even the most competent are not as reliable as a good pyrometer system. They admit that their ability to judge accurately varies from day to day and that their judgment is affected considerably by the condition of the sky, whether it is clear or cloudy. Besides, where it is a matter of only a few weeks to train a man to operate a pyrometer system, it takes about as many years to train him to judge temperatures by the state of incandescence. The pyrometer outfit in use in the glass plant of the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. consists of the following: Platinum elements, optical pyrometers; base-metal elements, indicators, potentiometers, and recording pyrometers. Platinum Elements and Optical Pyrometers.-Temperature control in - the melting operation is of such great importance that it is very desirable to know the exact temperatures, relative temperatures being of little value. The use of the platinum element is to determine the rate of heating or cooling of the furnace. The platinum couple is installed in either the crown or the wall of the furnace. It is placed first in a porcelain protecting tube and this is placed in a permanently fixed fireclay tube projecting from 1 1/2 to 2 in. into the fire-chamber. It has been found impractical to use the platinum couple for determining exact temperatures of the melting furnace, for the platinum element deteriorates rather rapidly at the high temperatures used, 2500° to 2700° F. From June to-September, when the waterways .are ice-free, freight is carried by barge from the •railhead at McMurray, Alberta, down the Athabasca river to Chipewyan, and across lake Athabasca to• Bushell, the terminal on Black bay, lake Athabasca, a total distance of 265 miles.The Eldorado Operation has been connected by a 12-mile, all-weather highway to Bushell. Where the highway crosses the park-land along the Fredette river, the townsite, Uranium, is under construction to provide services to the uranium-producing district. Spur roads have been built to the Ace, Fay, Eagle, •and Martin mines of the Eldorado operation, and to the properties of Pitch-Ore Uranium Mines, Ltd., and Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines, Ltd."

Earth dams and tailings dams are discussed in detail. Some of the fundamentals of soil mechanics relating to earth dams are presented. Brief notes on optimization are presented. The development of a triplex meter for earth dam instrumentation is described. The advantages of the hydro-cycloned dam over the spigotted dam are outlined. INTRODUCTIONThe realistic and responsible recognition of the pollution problem, combined with the grossly increased volumes of waste material from large modern mining operations, has emphasized the demand for safe tailings dams at minimum cost.Tailings may be defined as the waste material from a mining operation after the process of concentration in which the minerals have been extracted for commercial use. The present revenue from the Canadian Mining Industry is slightly over $4,000,000,000 per year and it is estimated that the quantity of tailings produced exceeds 300,000,000 tons annually. In many instances, the volume of tailings from a mining operation is greater than the volume of crude ore mined on account of the small quantity of valuable mineral recovered during concentration, and on account of the ""swell factor"" resulting from the processes of drilling and blasting, crushing, and grinding of the crude ore. Some of the larger mine tailings deposits contain over 200,000,000 cubic yards and the associated tailings dams are among the largest man-ma.de structures in the world."

While coal was undoubtedly seen by the early travellers within the state, the first mention of it was in the late 1820's when hunters put some stones from a creek bed under the logs of a large camp fire, and awoke later to find the stones on fire. The stream was later named Coal Branch; the location was at the eastern side of the present Bibbs County.1 In the Louisville Daily Journal of Feb. 11, 1831, the following short editorial note appeared: "Tuscaloosa Coal.-A small quantity of this article has reached Mobile, and has been tried in the office of the Patriot; it is said to be an excellent article. We invite such of our friends as desire economy in fuel, love a cheerful and constant fire, or would eschew a smoky room, to call and examine." On a geological map published in 1832, the "Carboniferous group" is shown and a spot near Tuscaloosa indicated as showing bituminous coal,2 and this is again alluded to in Morton's Synopsis, 1834. A brief description of the coal fields in the state in 1834 said that in winter coal was brought down the. Black Warrior River to Mobile and sold there at the same price as Liverpool coal, $1.00 to $1.50 per barrel, ($10 to $15 per ton) and that the writer was using it in his laboratory.3 At that time it was in local use by smiths and an iron foundry was using it in Shelby County.4 In 1836 some coal was mined in the Birmingham district, chiefly in the northern portion of the Coosa basin, where it was loaded on barges and taken down the Coosa Rivers.5 "William Whitman dug coal out of Wolf Creek (Walker County) in 1837," and in the same county, in 1839, the first coal shaft in the state, was sunk. This was near the mouth of Lost Creek and was known as Frierson's Shaft. It was operated by a hand windlass, using two tubs.1

THE dendritic pattern of steels shown by deep etching is used exten-sively as a guide in the inspection and control of the great majority of steels used in ordnance construction and for many applications in indus-try. The value of macroexamination lies in the fact that it enables a qualified observer to make deductions concerning the general quality of relatively large pieces of metal. Not the least of these general character-istics is the nature and extent of the dendritic segregation in the steel, either in the cast condition or after mechanical or thermal treatments. PREVIOUS WORK Detailed methods for macroetching were outlined by Yatsevitch1 and have been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. A comprehensive study of the occurrence, origin, and the chemical and crystalline nature of the dendritic structure was given by Keshian.2 The marked persistence of dendritic segregation in nickel steels is fully recognized and has been discussed by Sauveur and Reed' and by others. Very little, however, has been written on the effect of the various elements on the macrostructure of steels, and the purpose of this report is to submit evidence concerning the influence of chromium, nickel and molybdenum on the macrostructure of some 4 by 4-in. ingots cast and treated under closely controlled conditions.

THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

THE selection of the proper type of flotation machine involves the consideration of a wide variety of factors. Under any condition, all types of machines will promote some kind of separation. Obviously, the correct way of deciding which type of machine is best suited for a particular problem would be to set up all types of machines and test them out in a competitive manner, but the vast number of small concentrating plants are unable to make such complete and exhaustive tests. The experience of the authors of this paper indicates that if all the factors involved in any particular problem can be determined, and if all the flotation-machine characteristics are understood, some basis for selection could be arrived at other than actual comparison. This paper is presented to show how the process factors and machine characteristics have been combined at the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. from studies of several types of flotation machines. At the two mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. in the Ducktown Basin of Tennessee, four distinct flotation separations are made on the complex sulphide ore. Three different concentrates are produced from the ore-in the order of their importance: iron concentrate, copper concentrate, and zinc concentrate. Four different types of flotation machines are used. The selection of these four machines, for the plant operation, was based upon the study and operating experience of the machine units shown in the following list: Fagergren machine; square cell, size 56 inches Fagergren machine; level type, size 56 inches Denver machine; conical disk impeller, size 24 inches Denver machine; receded disk impeller, size 24 inches Minerals Separation Sub-A, size 24 inches Munro-Pearce deep cell, pneumatic Southwestern air machine, Hunt principle To date the study of flotation machines has been confined almost entirely to the rougher circuits. The various cleaning operations, being relatively a much simpler matter, have not been investigated so thoroughly. Table 1 shows a typical analysis of the two ores as well as of the mineral content. RECENTLY a comprehensive investigation of the various sigma binary alloys was published by Duwez and Baen.1 It was shown that the following conditions are necessary for the formation of the sigma phase: (1) the difference in atomic diameters of the two alloying metals must not be more than about 8 pct; (2) of the two elements which form sigma, one must exhibit a body-centered cubic structure while the second metal must be face-centered cubic, at least in one of its allotropic forms. In addition, a tetragonal unit cell was proposed and powder patterns of six sigma phases were indexed for d spacings greater than 1.640 kx. Since the indexing, based on tetragonal symmetry, led to only fair agreement, the possibility of sigma being orthorhombic was investigated. Various methods for indexing orthorhombic powder patterns are de- scribed in the literature.' The method used in this investigation was a graphical examination of the differences in values of sin' 9 for the adjacent lines of the powder diffraction pattern. This method led to a complete indexing of the Cr-Co (60-40) pattern. Because of the strong similarity between the various sigma alloys, it was then possible to assign indexes to the patterns of Fe-Cr (50-50), Fe-Cr-Mo (30-30-40), Fe-V (50-50), Co-V (50-50), and Ni-V (50-50). The values of sin' 9 and indexes of the six sigma alloys, together with visually estimated intensities, are presented in table 1. In general, the similitude between the six patterns is quite good. For spacings greater than 1.75 kx a few differences are noticeable. In the Ni-V pattern, no (320) exists and the two strong lines (030) and (031) are separated by only two lines of lower intensity, unlike any of the other sigma patterns. However, very little is known about the Ni-V phase diagram and it is possible that the equal atomic percentage composition in this system lies in a two-phase region. GOOD will is becoming recognized more and more as a necessary business asset, and a successful concern must have the good will not only of its customers and the public, but of its employees. Management -enlightened management-recognizes this and will go the limit to get it. Progress depends on cooperation, and in industry cooperation must be based on the acceptance by employ-ers and employees of some practical application of the principle that capital and labor are interdependent. Capital cannot exist without labor, and labor without capital is helpless. The development of each is depen-dent on the cooperation of the other. Confidence and good will are the foundation of every successful enter-prise, and these can be created only by securing a point of contact between employer and employee. We feel that one of the most effective agencies for promoting good will between employers and employees is through some well organized method of conference and have consequently adopted, to accomplish this, a plan of employee representation. The plan inaugurated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. about four years ago, which provides for the election by secret ballot of representatives by and from among the employees, has for its purpose three fundamentals; namely, to give the employees a voice in the determina-tion of the conditions under which they work, to furnish machinery for the prevention and adjustment of differ-ences between employees and management, and, so far as possible, to provide and foster continuous employment. The constitution and by-laws adopted take care of the detail in setting up machinery for the functioning of the representatives of both management and men, but the spirit with which the plan has been carried out and the results which have been accomplished are of far greater importance than the plan itself. The Bethlehem plan, which has been in operation since October, 1918, can no longer be classed as an experiment. The original by-laws provided for amend-ments and, as was anticipated, changes and improve-ments have been made from time to time by mutual agreement. The operation of the plan for over four years shows it to be fundamentally sound and that it must therefore be conceded a success.

On. Tuesday, Apr. 8, the Rocky Mountain Club held its 12th annual dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria, New York. In reporting the dinner the Evening Telegram says: "General Coleman du Pont was sort of master of ceremonies, and he conducted the affair at the end of a Colt .45. It was the General's `forty-five' which filled the banquet hall of the Waldorf-Astoria with the brand of smoke which Uncle Sam showered so generously upon Germany's hordes. It was General du Pont's `forty-five' which bellowed and thundered and echoed through Fifth avenue, scaring horses and shell shocking pedestrians: But no one was hurt or badly shocked except those who could not discern the artistry of Miss Doraldino's dance. "There were Western men around the table who have just come hack from over there. For instance, there were Brigadier General G. H. McManus, General Shanks and a score of others. And there were Thomas H. Watkins, who is said to own half the State of Pennsylvania and is known as the `Coal Baron'-of Pennsylvania,, and Alba B. Johnson, president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, each one a Westerner, with personality and type suggestive of some of the wonderful men Bret Harte wrote so much about. "It seemed as though General du Pont, who was chairman of the Reception Committee, tried to eclipse all former meetings, and he succeeded if congratulations are a criterion. " General du Pont startled the management of the Waldorf and surprised the diners by staging a three-round bout between Frankie Fay and Phil Wagner. The clash between these two featherweights made Waldorf history, because it was the first boxing contest ever held in the hotel. Tex Rickard, who is going to chaperone Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey in a fight in the near future,-was scheduled to referee the contest, but at the last moment, for some obvious reason, M. E. Schermerhorn was sent in as third man. The bout was a slashing one. Miss Amparito Farrar, lately returned from France, where-she sang for the 'dough-boys;' Eleanore Wetmore, the Rath Brothers and Phil Baker were among the others who entertained.

"Products filling our societal needs, like communication and transportation needs, are becoming more sophisticated and efficient. The cost has been an increased complexity of material combinations. The same trend is also seen in investment goods. As an example, different crusher types have almost doubled the power to weight ratio in a relatively short time while producing even higher crushing rations. This has been possible by high performance materials and advanced designs. Another example is new hybrid materials in prefabricated high-strength steel structures in construction with the aim to lighten the products and obtain energy savings in the use phase e.g. in transportation. This development in general has made the end of life phase obscure. Recycling is often understood as the first phase of the material cycle. This has been supported by the material centric point of view. When, say indium, has been collected and mechanically treated to a concentrated fraction, it is assumed as recycled. This is not the case. The same applies to special steel alloys where one tends to lose some of the alloying elements to slag or even into the gas phase in the melting and refining stage, not in the earlier steps of recycling. At present there is no clear understanding of recycling of hybrid materials and no clear willingness to create new functional recycling systems. As the EU directives and most of legislation worldwide are based on the material centric thinking and implemented even on total mass recovery basis there is neither legislative incentive nor very strong economic incentives to work out the problem. In our research, we focus on industrial design towards sustainability from a product centric point of view from product collection to final metallurgical steps. It is vital, in the design phase of product, to understand the effects of decisions on recyclability to a saleable raw material. Main goal of our work is to create the fortunate circumstances in supply chain - to pass the barriers and find the effective and fruitful drivers - for reasonable use of raw materials and recycling co-operation with industry. The boundary conditions in the work are extractive metallurgical performance and the economic viability of all the steps. It can be shown from our work that small design alterations may have a large impact on the recyclability. The earlier the decisions are made in the product life chain the more positive impact they will have. It can also be shown, that a strong processing and metallurgical industry is vital to any meaningful recycling of the modern EoL products. "Seeing the elephant" was a term often heard from 1849 to 1859, the period of the great California Gold Rush. The phrase was used by those who dreamed of instant wealth that was believed could be found in California's virgin earth and mighty rivers. When news of fabulous gold strikes throughout the Mother Lode reached far away places, thousands of gold seekers left home and family to join in this incredible adventure. The barren, placid state of California soon became one of the most bustling, populous areas in the West. Before the Rush Before 1848, Mexico ruled California. It was then a remote region, isolated from the urbane world of the East by 2900 km (1800 miles) of scorching desert and impassible mountains. By sea, it was 29 000 km (18,000 miles) via Cape Horn. Spaniards and Mexicans settled the coastal lands on tracts donated to them by the Mexican government. The inland area was the domain of Indians and a few settlers who also had been granted estates by the government. Among those settlers was Captain John Sutter. He had been fortunate enough to obtain about 11 leagues of land (spanning 100 km or 60 miles in length) from Governor Alvarado of Mexico. Sutter was somewhat of a visionary and possessed a gifted tongue. He managed to receive most of what he desired with minimal trouble. Enchanted with Sutter's personality, Alvarado promised him Mexican citizenship. Alvarado also commissioned him to become "representative of the government and officer of justice on the Northern frontier." With uncanny foresight, Sutter began building a fortress on his land in the Sacramento Valley. It later became known as Sutter's Fort. It was more than just a fort, however. It also became a stopping place and home for many foreigners and Americans who traveled to California, and it eventually became the mecca for overland pilgrims. Sutter engaged in many projects. These included a cattle ranch, fur trade and trapping, and the construction of an irrigation system. With the influx of immigrants over the years, the community around the fort grew rapidly. Lumber was much in demand and Captain Sutter agreed to supply the necessary capital for a community sawmill. The site chosen was some 72 km (45 miles) northeast of the fort on the south fork of the American River in the town of Coloma. During the course of its construction, Sutter's carpenter, James Marshall, discovered a problem with the tailrace on the mill. First Strike Early in the morning on Jan. 24, 1848, Marshall was checking the tailrace. He noticed an object shining in a foot of water at the bottom of a ditch. He reached down and picked it up. His heart began to thump wildly as he realized he was holding a gold nugget. Sutter planned to keep the find a secret for as long as possible. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of operating mines. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving the focus on safety, sustainable mining, green issues, profitability and productivity. There is a very high emphasis on ‘reducing cost to improve’, lower mining and beneficiation costs by eliminating waste/inefficiencies (reduce people, use less consumables, multiskilling, etc). The internal mining environment is getting tougher to operate in, with the deposits being more difficult to mine, more difficult to manage due to external pressure along with issues associated with maintaining quality, etc.Technological and environmental developments too numerous to mention, mean that cost control models, reduction in human resource numbers, as well as other drastic measures to curtail expenditure and increase profitability have become part of everyday business. The capability to manage the mining environment in a systemic manner has been lacking and this increases the pressure for performance on those individuals operating and managing mines.Working smarter has become crucial to ensure that businesses optimise the use of their resources, become more safety conscious, more productive and remain cost-effective, while recognising the importance of sustainable mining now and in the future. The logic of determining and managing to the capability of the mining value chain will be examined and the underlying assumptions or beliefs guiding behaviour and decision-making will be highlighted.In order to identify the obstacles in the mining value chain that hinder achievement of its full potential, the following questions have to be asked:What are the factors that influence the performance of a mining value chain?What is the design capacity of the mine?How can the inherent flow and value capacity of a mine be determined?What types of solutions will allow a mine to operate at its inherent flow and value capacity?This article will discuss the way we plan, measure, assess and manage the mine value chain, by addressing the following factors:balanced capacity versus flow and value capacity designthe use of averagingoptimising individual components in a value chain versus optimising the whole value chain.Optimising flow and value through the mining value chain is one of the three pillars of Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MR™). IT has been said that carbon is "ubiquitous" with reference to iron alloys. Certainly at temperatures where carbon and iron form the solid solution, austenite, it may be readily added to, or removed from, steel surfaces. Differences in concentration potential are the sole requirements for carbon flow. To measure the rate of carbon flow, a proportionality factor, D, is arbitrarily expressed in units of (length)2 X (time)-1. If the term used for carbon concentration is weight pct C, as is customary, then a factor must be found, changing this term to one of weight per unit volume when the diffusion coefficient, D, is used in flow formulae. The determination of D values for carbon is complicated since D varies with the concentration itself. The Matano method has often been employed for systems involving a variant D. This method expreses an evaluation of unsteady flow whereby .0 is given a relationship with the numerical value of C-X slopes. The author contends that this solution is incorrect, except when D is invariant. The primary purpose of this paper is to support this contention. Here diffusion is controlled under two conditions of flow. The first part deals with the steady state; the second part considers unsteady flow under definite restrictions. Beginning with the fundamental concept, the development is continued until equations for C-X curves are obtained. The solution is then subjected to experimental data. It is realized that a great amount of reliable data is required for a rigorous proof. No such research is claimed. Instead an attempt is made to set forth the physical significance of the diffusion mechanism, and particularly to express the factors which influence the flow of carbon in austenite. Of equal significance is the implication that gaseous media may be employed with reasonable accuracy in making these determinations. THE STEADY STATE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN AUSTENITE The fundamental experiment defining diffusion in solid metals may be readily performed for carbon in gamma iron.1 For this experiment a thin plate of medium carbon steel is chosen. The surfaces of this plate may be taken as two parallel planes which may be considered infinite for points well in the center of the planes. These two planes are held at different concentrations of carbon at a constant temperature. This temperature, 1700°F for example, is one where the single phase, carbon in solution with gamma iron, exists. When these conditions are held for a sufficient time the concentration of carbon of the different points of the solid settles down towards its steady state value. At points well removed from the ends, the concentration will remain the same along planes parallel to the surfaces of the plate.
