Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low- to high-volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust (ARD) generation. This research was conducted to identify the principles of ARD liberation from the coal product. Five U.S. bituminous coals were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low-velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, coal grind ability, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific ARD generated. The results of this investigation indicate that a combination of several factors are associated with ARD generation. One factor is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss(ADL) moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The effect of these factors is that different percentages of <10-m coal particles are dispersed as ARD. A discussion of electrostatic field principles, coal ADL, and its effect on ARD generation is presented.

Pennsylvania has ample reserves of high-alumina clays which are potential sources of alumina, but many of these clays contain large amounts of iron, which makes them unsuitable for treatment by acid processes(1). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the optimum conditions for the selective hydrochloric acid leaching of iron (2-4) prior to the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from Pennsylvania ferruginous high-alumina clays. This was accomplished by first testing the iron-bearing minerals and the clay minerals most often encountered in Pennsylvania clays to determine their rate of dissolution in hydrochloric acid solutions. The results of individual minerals were then based for leaching Pennsylvania clays with a 19% hydrochloric acid solution at the boiling point of the acid for approximately 30 minutes to achieve as high as 90% iron removal and only 2-5% alumina losses.

"Minera Penmont, at La Herradura, is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V., and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with two-stage crushing and heap leaching facility, the gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130,000 gold ounces per year, and treatment capacity is 22,000 tonnes/day. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to the coarse visible gold, in some coarser particles ranging from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols where established during exploration and prior to starting up operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. But, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block made of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to starting up operations (“existing”) and the new protocol (“leaching”). In the “existing” protocol, subsampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying is used to estimate the gold content, on a 50 g sample. In the “leaching” protocol a 12,000 g sample was bottle rolled cyanide leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this “rotary sampling” protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the “leaching” protocol.Test results were compared in three groups < 0.30 g/t (below cut-off), 0.30 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall. Results show that the protocol established prior to starting up operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

The scheduling of underground mining activities is a complex task, in particular because of the requirement to satisfy a large number of constraints. A Schedule Optimization Tool (SOT) for underground mine planning is described, and its use for investigating strategic decisions is illustrated by means of a case study. The main components of SOT include: a genetic algorithm, which searches for optimal schedules; guidance, the application of heuristic rules to guide the genetic algorithm; and sliding, which implements just-in-time development. For the case study, SOT is employed to generate schedules at various ore capacities, accounting for the appropriate financials in each schedule evaluation. The case study finds that preliminary scheduling performed before invoking SOT, intended to provide a good starting point for the search, does not ultimately lead to higher value schedules. Two key uses for SOT are identified. A mine planner can save time by using SOT to produce high-value scheduling alternatives. This process ensures a broader investigation of the value that the deposit can yield. Also, SOT can be used to validate strategic and tactical decisions, by scheduling under alternative scenarios. Both uses produce high value schedules conforming to all imposed resource constraints.

Resin anchored rock bolts are an effective tool to control the deformation of an underground opening because they combine high support capacity with fast installation. However, there are still numerous shortcomings concerning the understanding and interaction of the system bolt-resin-rock. Field and laboratory test series have been conducted for evaluating the load capacity and bond strength of resin grouted rock bolts in different host rocks under axial load. This paper describes that the behavior and shear strength of the system bolt-resin-rock depends on the rock type and discusses a simple correlation between peak shear strength and shear stiffness in the ratio 1:1000 which may moreover be helpful for estimating rock bolt capacity after installation.

The beginning of 21st century has heralded the global strategic importance, as evidenced by increase in energy prices and energy generation-emission-utilization dilemmas. In January 2008, the South African energy supplier, ESKOM had tabled the concept of power conservation and acknowledged the energy crisis until 2016. The concept is required of all energy users to reduce their electricity consumption, intensify energy efficiency and cautiously proceed with new projects. The generation of energy results in by-products called ?green house gases? (GHGs). To make a positive response to climate change and their effect on the environment, every energy user must ensure efficient energy use through technical and administrative means referred to generally as energy savings. This paper identifies mine ventilation engineering, in particular the electricity consumed by main fan units, as an area of potential energy savings. For a major mining company, electricity consumed by main ventilation fans alone can be in the order of 120 MW. Although a known fan engineering technique but scantly applied technology identified as the Hermit Crab can be seen as a ?quick win? project, due to its success in other industries such as cement and steel. The ?Hermit Crab? technique® involves upgrading or replacement of an impeller - whatever its origin - with a design impeller to suit the actual ventilation requirements, resulting in increased fan efficiencies. The cash flow benefits associated with a case study and its rollout of this technology have been calculated. For a 10% increase in main fan efficiency, would have a net present benefit of US$ 16.08m over 10 years. With the inclusion of carbon credits, this benefit rises to US$ 29.40m in total. Application of other available technologies, viz., composite materials, ventilation-on-demand and variable speed drives are discussed.

The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

Our national interests are best served by having well-trained first responders available for rapid response to emergency situations in underground mines. However, recent mine disasters have indicated that focused training on hazard recognition, decision making, leadership, and incident command center protocols needs to be incorporated into a comprehensive training plan for all personnel involved in a mine rescue. Currently, there are very few training opportunities for the mining professionals responsible for making the crucial decisions needed during a mine emergency. With recent technical advances, it is now feasible to use a computer-based simulator to train mine rescue personnel for mine emergencies in their mine or any other mine at a convenient location without interrupting normal mining operations. This simulated environment teaches underground search and rescue procedures, communications, and decision making based on real-time information and hazard recognition. Since 2010, the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) has offered computer simulated mine rescue training using an incident command center (ICC) directed towards enhancing decision making and communication skills. To support this training, CSM partnered with Rite Solutions, Inc. to modify, enhance, and create simulation software for mine rescue applications. The focus of this partnership is to modify existing simulation technology to address the unique nature of underground rescue operations, make it applicable to any underground operation, create generic scenarios, and develop customized computer simulations, including scenarios, for specific sites. Need The CSM mine rescue computer simulator helps mine rescue teams train for mine disasters where they would be deployed for the rescue and recovery of a mine. It provides additional, readily accessible opportunities to train without affecting mining operations. While the simulator lacks the physical demands of a rescue situation, it is very effective for teaching mine rescue procedures as rescuers seamlessly walk through the process and work out issues before going underground. The mine rescue simulator also introduces students to coordination through an ICC which stresses the use of effective communication and hones decision making skills. Most of the mine rescue teams participating in this study had never trained with an ICC controlling the actions of the mine rescue team making this an extremely valuable training opportunity. In addition, the mine rescue computer simulator allows instructors to modify mine rescue scenarios and tailor the scenarios to each team?s individual needs resulting in a more versatile training experience. The goal is to ensure that all teams receive the maximum benefit from each training session.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. Fine coal (-500 µm) is notoriously difficult to dewater. It is not uncommon for a dewatered product to have a moisture content as high as 30 per cent after vacuum filtration. This poses several handling and financial problems to such an extent that a lot of fine coal is discarded onto slurry waste ponds. A novel way of dewatering fine coal was developed at North-West University. It entails deliberately damaging the filter cake during dewatering to allow for an increased flow of air through the cake at the expense of the applied pressure differential. This method resulted in an average improvement in final cake moisture of between 3 per cent and 5 percent when executed in the laboratory under controlled conditions. A device was designed that could be fitted onto existing belt filters that would damage the filter cake as it passes by. This device was tested on a vacuum belt filter installation at a coal beneficiation operation in the Waterberg coal field in South Africa. The results showed a 3 per cent reduction in final moisture of the cake, proving the validity of the method at full industrial scale.

Over the past 25 years, the present author has written with several co-authors a series of papers beginning with the landmark paper in the 1st International Conference on Ground Control in Mining in 1981, in turn, based upon U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) funded contract research managed by the author with a final report issued in 1979, all concerning this paper?s title subject, Effect of Full-Extraction Underground Mining on Ground and Surface Waters. Initially the work was a summary of British, Russian, and Hungarian experience tailored to United States strata conditions, but has evolved into a consistent and well-documented model of the behavior of strata influenced by full-extraction underground mining such as longwall coal mining. The several strata zones recognized in these works, Surface Fracture Zone, Constrained or Aquiclude Zone, Dilated Zone, Fractured Zone, and Caved Zone, have been observed by several workers in the field. The concepts presented initially 25 years ago have been adopted, rightly or wrongly, by state regulators, ground and surface water researchers, and mining practitioners. The development and utility of these concepts and recent findings will be summarized.

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project&apos;s scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the stability evaluation and bifurcation criteria are presented for the Jinping arch dam structure. The bifurcation models in failure status of the arch dam are derived from the uniqueness of the controlling equation of dam behaviours, and the relative phenomena between positive definition of dam structural tangent stiffness and bifurcation are given in the paper. Then the structural collapse criteria for arch dam are discussed based on the energy mode. A stability criterion of dam based on the connection of yield zones is proposed according to the implementation of elasto-plastic FEM (finite element method) numerical analysis. In accordance with this judging method, nonlinear FEM analysis is used for Jinping arch dam. The failure process of the Jinping dam was simulated and yield zones were found under the overloading condition. In 1990 the Noranda Technology Centre commenced a project to develop an interactive three-dimensional blast design system using a commercial computer-aided drafting and design package (CADD). The objective was to alleviate the blast engineer from the tedious and time consuming blast layout and design functions normally done by hand. This would allow more time for optimizing blast designs through assessing multiple options. Since several blast design software "tools" already existed at Noranda, the need arose to integrate all the applications into one overall system that shared one common database. The result is BLASTCAD.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

Recently, questions regarding the influence of atmospheric temperature and humidity levels on airblast levels have arisen at a number of blast sites. Humidity is alleged to have contributed to high levels of disturbance within communities surrounding blasting. In some cases, local regulatory agencies considered adopting guidelines to specify humidity and temperature ranges under which blasting cannot take place. However, it is normal blasting industry practice not to consider humidity or temperature effects, in the absence of inversions, on airblast levels. When blasting is conducted in the vicinity of residential structures, the influence of weather on the propagation and attenuation of airborne noise from the blasting site is always a concern. Sound naturally attenuates in air with distance from the source. A part of this attenuation is attributed to divergence at the airblast wave front, while the remainder of the attenuation is an accumulation of various factors that include temperature and barometric pressure, absorption in air due precipitation and vegetation, wind and temperature gradients, atmospheric turbulence and topography (Beranek, 1971). Wind speed and wind direction, as well as vertical and horizontal temperature gradients can cause airblasts to focus in local regions surrounding blasting operations and may result in air pressures greater than expected. In fact, wind and temperature inversions can actually increase sound levels with distance from the blast site. Close to the blast site, the effects of inversions may be negligible but may exceed 10 dB at 800 m or greater (Davis and Cornwell, 1991).

Research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to assess the technical feasibility of smelting cement-copper precipitate in an electric furnace to produce commercial-grade copper. The blister-grade copper produced in smelting was refined by gaseous oxidation and reduction methods to rive a product equal in quality to fire-refined copper. The cement copper used in the study was typical of the material produced in commercial operations. The sample product was received in a partially oxidized state and analyzed 77.5 percent Cu, 3.4 percent Fe, 0.8 percent Pb, 0.05 percent Ni, 0.6 percent Sn, and 0.9 percent S. Smelting tests were made on the precipitate using laboratory-size induction and electric-arc furnaces. Three types of furnace linings were tested during, the investigation: Carbon, including graphite; clay-graphite; and silicon carbide. Although all proved satisfactory, either carbon or graphite was preferred because of their superior refractory properties and low permeability to molten copper. Copper recoveries in the induction and arc smelting tests averaged 92 percent in commercial-grade metal assaying 99.8 percent copper. "There is an ever-increasing demand these days for efficient methods of removing metals from solutions especially for selectively recovering a particular metal from a mixture of metals in solution.Up until the mid l 930's the only methods widely practiced for such separations involved precipitation techniques or electrolysis. Both these methods have limitations and indeed can only be used for certain metals.It is only within the last 40 years or so when synthetic ion exchange materials became available that chemists in industry and universities have been able to apply ion exchange techniques to a wide variety of separations that not only would be impossible by precipitation methods but which are now achieved with much greater efficiency.Ion Exchange TechniquesIon exchange is a unit process that can be applied using either liquid ion exchangers or solid resin particles. Liquid ion exchange - or solvent extraction as it is often referred to - is used in a number of special areas dictated mainly by the nature of the separation.On the other hand, ion exchange resins are much more widely used and consequently a great deal more is known about their application to a variety of metal separations.In both systems there is a loss of the ion exchange material which in the case of solvent extraction results in hydrocarbons going to waste. The ion exchange resin systems lose resin in the form of small particles, referred to as ""resin fines"", and these are insoluble.The loss of liquid ion exchanger is due to the fact that it is slightly soluble in water and consequently the loss is a function of the volume of liquid with which it comes into contact and is not related to the amount of metal processed."
