The construction and utilization of oil and gas pipelines is a vital aspect of the Canadian economy. The evolution of materials for this application can be considered as part of an evolutionary process in which the processing of the materials is linked to the design requirements of the pipeline. The evolution of both materials and designs will be considered in terms of parameters such as yield strength, work hardening characteristics including strain path changes such as the Bauschinger Effect and toughness. The final portion of the presentation will consider the possible uses of non-metallic materials, composites and 'smart 'systems in pipeline construction.

Both the San Andreas fault complex and the Murray fracture zone are apparently found to be contemporaneous with the Laramide mineralization period. Their compounding effects certainly have disturbed the Texas lineament belt and its components with serious lateral offsets and most probably have been instrumental in allowing intrusives to be emplaced as well as mineralization to accompany these intrusions at some of the fracture intersections. While the main fracture centers can be almost accepted as being structurally linked together, the Texas lineament trend definitely predominates, exerting a prevailing direction to graben (Silver Bell) and to elongated depressions (Bisbee). That this lineament belt also influenced the concomitant mineralization seems a logical inference. The orebodies are generally found at intersections near the most centrally-located intrusive with a distance varying from contiguity to one or two miles. The Southeast Arizona copper province owes its existence primarily to a particularly favorable structural setting of broad semi-continental scope. Thus, various regional structural elements are to be considered as possibly direct or remote cause for the widespread mineralization, although the one or the ones really responsible may never be singled out. There arc three basic regional elements: (1) The north-northwest-trending anticlinorium that diagonally crosses Arizona is quite obvious because many mountain ranges follow this direction. This anti- clinorium, which merges northward into the Wasatch-Jerome Belt, marks a broad zone of weakness where tension seems to prevail. Mineralized trends such as Jerome-San Manuel-Bisbee may give some weight to the economic value of this structural element. (2) Northeast-trending fractures, parallel to the Colorado Mineral Belt (Landwehr, 1967), appear troincident with mineralization as evidenced by the Questa-Grants-Morenci and the Lordsburg- Tyrone-Santa Rita alignments. This structural direction is accepted as one of the most economically significant in the Southwestern United States. (3) The Texas Lineament.

EXPLORATION for metallic mineral deposits is carried on by those special adaptations of methods which the explorer believes will yield most economically or satisfactorily the particular answer sought. In this project the usual methods of geologic observation, recording, and interpretation, when combined with magnetic geophysical methods and geochemical soil sampling, led to disclosures of appreciable zinc mineralization where none was visible in surface exposure. Since 1945 considerable work has been done with geochemical prospecting methods, chiefly in determining the presence and distribution of various elements existing in minor amounts in rocks, soil, vegetation or waters of mineralized areas. Such work, in which the U. S. Geological Survey has taken the lead, finds a ready place in the field repertoire of the exploration geologist as a supplement, not a substitute, for other methods. The Chollet project was carried out in 1951 by the American Smelting & Refining Co. near its Van Stone mine in northern Stevens County, Wash., in the area shown in Fig. 1. The Van Stone mine is located in the Onion Creek drainage of the Selkirk Mountains, midway between the towns of Colville and Northport, Wash., and some twenty airline miles west of the Metaline mining district. Its zinc-lead orebodies, currently yielding about 1000 tpd of ore, occur as bedding replacement deposits in the middle Cambrian Metaline formation near an intrusive granodiorite contact. The target of exploration at the Chollet prospect was a similar geologic environment along the intrusive contact about 5 miles west of the mine. Geographic Setting The Chollet ground covers a north-facing slope at 3000 to 4000-ft elevation. Second-growth jack pine and tamarack with some hemlock and yellow pine make a thick forest cover. A heavy under-forest of alder, willow, and lesser shrubs occupies the draws, see Fig. 2. Grassy slopes appear at higher elevations. The lower slopes are underlain by a thick blanket of glacial till and alluvium so that outcrops are scarce; however, perhaps 50 pct rock exposure prevails at higher elevations. This part of northern Washington annually receives about 25 in. of precipitation, which largely falls as snow in the winter months. Summers are dry with occasional rainy periods. General Geology The Van Stone mine and the Chollet prospect lie along the southern margin of a westerly extending lobe of the Kaniksu batholith, one of the series of granodioritic masses that are intrusive into Cretaceous and older rocks in northern Washington and southern British Columbia. The margin is composed of complexly deformed Paleozoic sediments ranging in age from the lower Cambrian Maitlen phyllite on the east, through middle Cambrian Metaline formation (limestone and dolomite), to Ordovician Ledbetter slate on the west. In general the formations strike N10 to 50E and dip steeply northwestward, although dip reversals and minor folding occur. This general rock distribution is shown on Fig. 3. In this area the Metaline formation, which is the host rock for mineralization, appears to be of about 4000-ft thickness that can be conveniently divided into the same three units defined by Park and Cannon' for the Metaline area. The basal part consists of 1000 ft of interbedded white limestone, argillaceous limestone, and gray silty argillite. The middle part, approximately 1500 ft thick, consists of fine-grained black, gray, and white dolomite. This unit also contains minor interbedded limestone. The upper part is a gray massive limestone about 1500 ft thick that grades upward into slaty limestone and slate capped locally by a thin black jas-peroidal dolomite which is either the uppermost member of the Metaline formation or the basal member of the overlying Ledbetter (Ordovician)

This article could be entitled "The Rediscovery of the Windfall Mine," since it was originally discovered early in this century. The "Rediscovery" was made by personnel of Idaho Mining Corp. during the course of an investigation of the Windfall mine beginning in 1967. There had been historic production from the Windfall mine sporadically from 1908 until 1951 and there was present during much of this time a mill that vat leached crushed ore. Mining was underground to a depth of 91 m (300 ft). Prior to Idaho's activities, the mine had been inactive since the early 1950s. Idaho Mining Corp. was an "exploration company," privately owned and based in Reno, NV. The writer was at that time manager of exploration for Idaho Mining. The company held interests in the Cortez Gold mine, then being readied for production, and had conducted exploration for various mineral commodities in Nevada for several years. Idaho's attention was first directed to the Windfall mine in the Eureka District, Eureka County, Nevada (see Fig. 1, Nevada map) by a search of published geologic literature of the state of Nevada. An attempt was made to acquire a library consisting of all of the published geo-data for the state of Nevada as well as to obtain as much of the unpublished material as could be acquired. A study of these data, and in particular Tom Nolan's Professional Paper 406 (1962), indicated that the Windfall mine was anomalous for the Eureka District in that it contained deposits of disseminated gold. This source and other sources indicated that the Windfall had produced from underground operations approximately 59 kt (65,000 tons) grading 12.6 g/t (0.368 oz per ton) gold ore that was processed in a vat leaching operation and that the gold was "invisible" to the naked eye and could not be panned. It was ascertained that there were no active operations near the mine and a geologic reconnaissance was made and a few samples were taken to attempt to determine if the mineralization was indeed disseminated. The initial group of samples around the mine area averaged 1.25 ppm [11.5 g/t gold (0.036 oz per ton)] and the mineralization did appear to disseminate into the wallrock. The next step involved researching the ownership of property in the immediate area of the mine, and [ ] a property map was constructed that showed six or seven different ownerships of patented and unpatented claims, as well as some open ground, in the target area. INTRODUCTION Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported in an underground or surface mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continuous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits vary from area to area and between different mines. For mineral benefications of this ore in the mills, use is made of various chemicals, often with toxic or hazardous properties.1 As well as the need to control the more conventional hazards associated with any mining and milling operation, special care needs to be exercised in the mining and milling of uranium because of the radioactive nature of the ore. This requires that we examine closely the radiation hazard areas encountered in the mining and milling of uranium, with the broad overview of some of the basic facts in the radiation hazard control programme. To place the hazard in its proper perspective, we require recognition, evaluation and control of those factors arising in and from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and affect the well being among workers or citizens of the community. The radiation environment in uranium mine is complex and variable. Although uranium ore is only mildly radioactive, it naturally contains a complex mixture of radioactive isotopes. Workers are exposed to external gamma radiation, to some beta radiation and to airborne radon, radon daughters and ore dust. All of these types of exposures warrant considerations in formulating control procedures but, in general, radon daughters are known to present the dominant risk. The basis of dose limitation in radiological protection is risk limitation. Long-term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia indicate that the incidence of lung cancer can be accounted for by a linear relationship with exposure to radon decay products.2 On the basis of this proportional exposure-risk relationship, a risk coefficient for lung cancer in the range of 1-5.10-4 WLM-1 during the total lifetime, has been estimated by UNSCEAR3 and other researchers. It should be noted that this risk coefficient includes the excess lung cancer risk from external gamma radiation in mines and from other carcinogenic chemical effects, if any, to which the miners are normally exposed during their underground work. It also takes into regard the possible synergistic influences. This paper reviews the occurrence of radiation and its control factors and the development of engineering design features for the environmental control at Denison Mine. NATURAL URANIUM SERIES Uranium is the most common element in the Earth's crust. It is widely distributed in nature in all rocks and is readily measurable in the sea. Hence, radon gas is universally produced in every part of the globe. Mining is patently confined to ores containing more than half a kilogram, or so, per tonne of uranium unless it is combined with other marketable metals. Uranium-238 is the first element in the uranium series. In all, there are 13 radioactive decay products of 238U (Fig. 1), ending up as a stable isotope of Lead-206. The whole basis of the radiological hazards associated with the mining and milling of uranium is dependent on the behaviour of these isotopes during each phase of the process.

Surface mining of coal is undoubtedly one of the more controversial aspects of the mineral industries today. There is a constant tug between the need for readily available and inexpensive energy supplies and the desire to minimize disturbance to the land. Without a doubt, surface mining severely disturbs the land surface. The duration of this disturbance, from a minimum of a few months to a maximum of infinity, however, is strictly dependent upon the mine operator's willingness to reclaim. Surface mining critics claim that it is impossible to ameliorate the detrimental effects of this mining to insignificance. The more vocal critics, indeed, are calling for complete abolition of surface mining for coal. Thus, they do not believe that it is possible to restore surface- mined land to pre-mining conditions. As a consequence of this position, an adversary relationship has developed between the operators and their critics who, simultaneously, believe they are doing their best for the United States. In a forum of mining experts, there is little need to recount the kind and amount of devastation that can result from poorly reclaimed land. This has been done numerous times, including once 1 by the author. Of particular interest to this paper, though, are the environmental hazards associated with contour strip mining. In addition to the problems of area mining: denudation of vegetation; exposure of toxic spoil; increase of erosion runoff; etc.--contour mining has the very real problem of landslide due to the outslope stacking of overburden. Contour mining is understood to be the extraction of coal from a hillside outcrop such that the resultant pit follows, or nearly follows, an elevation contour. The problem with contour mining as usually practiced is that the spoil from the cut, or the first cut if multiple cuts are made, is placed on the outslope. If this slope is steep, the resulting pile is difficult to stabilize, generally erodes swiftly, and may fail disastrously.

Many of the fatal accidents in coal mines have resulted from the Explosives used in Use of explosives for breaking down the coal. These accidents have resulted both from the use of explo- sives that were not suitable and from the careless or improper use of suitable explosives. Investigation has shown that one of the commonest causes of dis- astrous explosions in the coal mines in this country has been a blown- out shot of black blasting powder or dynamite. The dangers that attend the use of these explosives were perceived several years ago, and in consequence the attention of powder manufacturers was directed to the production of explosives that would be less liable to ignite inflammable gas or dust. The manufacturers have been so successful in their efforts that it is now possible to obtain explosives which yield much shorter and quicker flames than black blasting powder or dynamite, and hence are much less dangerous to use in fiery or dusty coal mines. of explosives. To find out which of the many grades of short-flame explosives Government tests have the qualities that render an explosive most effective and least dangerous for mining coal, the United States Government established a testing station at Pitts- burgh, Pa., in 1908. This station is now under the charge of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before the station was opened a state- ment of the requirements that the explosives in question would have to satisfy was drawn up and sent to manufacturers. A number of these sent explosives to be tested, and on May 15, 1909, a list of the explosives that had passed the tests was published. Since that date other brands of explosives have been tested and three more lists have been issued. The latest list, published in Miners' Cir- cular 2, Bureau of Mines, contained the names of no less than 71 explosives that had passed the tests prior to January 1, 1911.

The key drivers for the copper smelting industry are a complex mix of economic and "human" factors which combine to drive technology in new directions and can provide a strong indication of future industry trends. Recent examples have been the drive to achieve increased scale of production and resultant cost efficiencies by using a single furnace high intensity smelting vessel, and the broad acceptance of Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for this duty. The development and adoption of continuous converting processes to counter the increased pressures faced by the Peirce Smith converting process is another example of the need for innovation. This paper discusses the merits of the continuous converting process, describes how the Ausmelt TSL batch converting process has been adapted to the new Ausmelt Continuous Copper Converting (C3) process in response to these industry trends and examines the Ausmelt continuous converting flowsheet options available to the end user.

Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

Bureau of Mines , situated in Pittsburgh, Pa . , three phases of its work in behalf of the safety of the coal miner are the establishment of permissible explosives for use in gaseous and dusty mines , the development of electrical equipment that can be used with safety in mines of this character , and improvement in the safety of mechanical devices used in and about the mines . Also That these efforts are beginning to have a cumulative effect in lives. saved is evident from the fatality statistics of the industry . Although nearly 80,000 more men are employed in coal mining than ten years ago and much more coal is mined , the fatalities each year are considerably less than ten years ago . the amount of coal mined in a year for each life lost has risen between 60,000 and 70,000 tons . In 1909 , the year before the Bureau was created , the production of coal for each life lost was 174,416 tons . In 1920 , the production for each life lost was 285,000 tons .

THE Falling Cliff Mine adjoins on the west the Bertha Mine, from which a large amount of first-class ore has been taken, producing the purest zinc known to commerce. The two mines are in the same hill, Bertha being on the northern 'slope and Falling Cliff on the top and opposite slope. The formation is No. 2 limestone. In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

The Yallourn Open Cut Mine has recently commenced mining operations in the new East Field which will supply the 1450MW Yallourn W Power Station for the rest of its 30 year design life. The authors describe the design and implementation process followed during the rehabilitation of the areas disturbed by works associated with mining in the East Field. One area of the East Field, the old external overburden dump, has been of particular interest and is discussed in detail. A discussion on the fire protection considerations is included as these are critical and often misunderstood as being contrary to good rehabilitation design practice. Finally, the development of a master plan for the rehabilitation of the Yallourn Open Cut in general, incorporating the East Field work, is discussed.

A NOVEL practice in the bituminous coal industry is the accelerated method of burning coal to ash used in the laboratory of the Fidelity washery of the United Electric Coal Companies, Du Quoin, Ill. Development of this method has supplanted the tedious float-and-sink process for plant control at this plant. In normal operation the plant operators have available within thirty minutes the accurate ash percentage of the coal loaded in the railroad cars and can therefore make adjustments to maintain a practically uniform quality of washed coal, regardless of the variations in washery feed.

It is a pleasure to participate in this Fall meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers to discuss energy conservation trends in the cement industry. Energy is the "life blood" of American industry, and the ability to use available energy resources efficiently may well determine the future of our nation and of its industries. The Federal Energy Administration has classified cement manufacture as one of several energy-intensive industries in the U.S. and has selected the Portland Cement Association to make a detailed study of possible energy conservation measures. Member companies of the Portland Cement Association represent about 85% of the cement producing capacity of the United States and 100% of Canadian capacity. Stated briefly, the purpose of the Association is to extend the uses of portland cement and concrete through research and development, market promotion, education, and public affairs work. PCA's general offices and research laboratories are located in Skokie, Illinois. Our staff of engineers, scientists, and research personnel make the PCA uniquely qualified to perform an energy conservation study of the kind requested by FEA.

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

FOR the past six years gravity surveys have been used for underground prospecting in the copper mines at Bisbee, Ariz. The primary purpose of the surveys has been to reduce the diamond drilling and crosscutting necessary for exploration. Since many of the orebodies are small, and geologic control is not always apparent, any information that will direct the drilling and crosscutting is highly desirable. Because of extensive development and exploration work in the copper mines at Bisbee, it has been possible to cover more than 630,000 ft of crosscuts on 30 levels with the gravity surveys. In the process the gravity procedures have been refined to a high degree. Density Contrast: For a gravity survey to be successful, a sufficient density contrast must exist between the geologic feature sought and surrounding host rocks. Most mineralized areas will provide this contrast if fairly massive bodies are present. In the Bisbee area the entire sequence of formations, except for alluvium, appears to have specific gravities ranging from 2.65 to 2.70. These values have been determined by means of a large number of cut samples and diamond drill cores. As a further check, vertical gravity differences have been used where nonmineralized sections are known to occur.' The only known major gravity disturbances result from mineralization that has increased the density and the voids that have decreased density. The voids are caused by mining operations and by underground water movement that has developed several areas of caverns. Equipment: While not absolutely essential, a small rugged gravity meter, such as the Worden meter, is highly desirable. A tall tripod, about the height of a transit tripod, permits instrument set-ups in deep water and in locations where fallen timber and muck piles make it impossible to use a short tripod. An additional advantage of a tall tripod is that it places the meter in the center of the crosscut, reducing the error caused by the crosscut void. Size and weight are important, since the only satisfactory means of operating the meter underground is to carry it by hand. A backpack can be used in rare instances but is usually a hindrance because of the close station spacing. The operator's ability to move through tight clearances will improve survey coverage, as it is then possible to move through raises and caved areas and to pass mine cars and machinery with a minimum of trouble. Station Control: Gravity stations are normally located every 100 ft along the crosscuts, at each intersection, and in the face of all stub crosscuts. In areas of high gravity relief, or where small anomalies might be expected, stations may be located at 25 or 50-ft intervals. When possible, the stations should be offset to avoid effects of raises or other voids. The gravity stations on a level are tied to one or more base stations, which are usually located at the shaft or near the portal of an adit. The base stations may be part of a gravity control net that extends to each level in the mine as well as to the surface. Such a net extending throughout the potential area of the surveys is highly desirable, as it is then possible to compare all gravity stations on a uniform basis. The stations that are part of the base net should be carefully established by multiple readings and, if necessary, by a least squares adjustment of the loops. In some instances where levels do not have a shaft station, or where access may be blocked by caving, it may be necessary to establish secondary bases at the top and bottom of the raises that are between levels. Under fair conditions 70 to 90 gravity stations can be located and run in 6 hr by a two-man crew. The best field procedures depend on conditions. Reduction of Field Data: Most of the time required to produce a final gravity map is consumed in processing the data. Each meter reading must be corrected for a minimum of five factors that affect the gravity value in addition to the density contrast being sought. These factors are 1) instrumental drift, 2) station elevation, 3) topography, 4) latitude, and 5) regional gravity gradient. Mine openings, such as stopes and raises, will affect the value. However, it is seldom practical to make corrections for these voids. Usually a rotation is made on the field note on the station, and any
