The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., is conducting a rock mechanics study of the 6,200-ft-deep circu-lar, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to instrument and evaluate lining behavior and rock de-formation when a deep shaft is constructed in a high in situ stress field and anisotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were moni-tored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. Field data from the 5,955-ft test level show that rock displacement is controlled by rock mass anisotropy. Liner stress and strain levels reflect the high in situ stress field as well as nearby station and raise construction. Maximum stresses measured in the lining, as a result of shaft excavation, are about one-third of its compressive strength. Subsequent loading pocket excavation resulted in signifi-cantly increased stress and strain levels in the liner. Continued monitoring and preliminary analysis of the data indicate that concrete-lined, circular shafts are stable for the high, unequal horizontal stress fields and rock anisotropy encountered in deep-level mining. Adjacent development work can be expected to significantly alter the initial stress and displacement conditions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to obtain comparative data on the extent of reduction of galena and sphalerite with molecular hydrogen and with hydrogen from the thermal cracking of ammonia and methane at various time intervals. Galena reductions of 95 to 99 percent were obtained with H2 and with decomposed NH3 while reductions of 70 to 80 percent were obtained with cracked CH4? Sphalerite reductions of 99 percent were obtained at 1,000° C with Hz and with decomposed NBs; however, complete volatilization of the free zinc from the remaining concentrate and the subsequent recombination of zinc and sulfur vapors resulted. A promoted iron catalyst brought about a decrease of 100° C in the temperature required for complete decomposition of ammonia. It was found that H2S retards NB3 decomposition and that nitrogen retards the reduction of galena by H2? A mixture of N2 and He in about the same ratio as that obtained by the thermal cracking of NBs gave about 15 percent less reduction of galena than was obtained with decomposed NB3; this indicates that a portion of the hydrogen obtained by NBs decomposition is in an active form.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) evaluated several concepts to minimize flooding of Trunk Highway 35W (TH35W) near downtown Minneapolis. A deep stormwater storage facility (SSF) was selected for final design. Given the constricted project footprint, open trench excavation construction methods were not feasible, and a top-down construction approach using diaphragm walls (d-walls) was utilized. The SSF is located near the edge of a glacial valley containing glacial and alluvial deposits including cobbles and boulders. Categorizing ground conditions was critical in assessing constructability of the SSF and determining project cost. Multiple phases of geotechnical investigation were conducted including geotechnical borings, geophysical surveys, and pump testing. Obstructions (including cobbles and boulders) were encountered at some of the borings conducted and therefore were anticipated to be encountered during construction. As part of development of a project risk register, it was decided by the Owner that the Contractor should assume no obstructions during d-wall construction, and obstructions encountered during construction would be paid using funds allocated in a project risk pool, which was informed by a Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) and Geotechnical Interpretive Report (GIR). The cells of the structure were successfully completed in 2022 with final completion anticipated for the fall of 2023.

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company&apos;s shareholders. In the light of the industry&apos;s past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research into the effects of a barium-based fuel additive (the "postflame" type) on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of types certifiable for use in underground mines. Test parameters consisted of additive concentration and engine loads, speed, and air intake restriction. DPM emissions, including condensed volatiles, were measured gravimetrically. Also measured were gaseous emissions including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. The fuel additive was effective, reducing DPM up to 75 pct, when used at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct (one-fourth of the concentration recommended by the manufacturer). The additive was most effective at the highest fuel-air ratios, reducing DPM from 400 mg/m3 for untreated fuel to 120 mg/m3. At light loads, 25 pct of full rated, no DPM reductions were measured. Based on these results, the additive is recommended for use in diesel fuel, at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct, to power underground mining equipment as long as certain conditions are met: that a beneficial DPM reduction is verified, that the minimum required quantity of additive is used, and that potential adverse effects such as increased nitrogen oxides are checked.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay&apos;s entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

Sintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blast furnace use. Due to the depleting reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, there have been considerable changes in iron ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia. Corresponding to the changes in the availability of iron ore resources, the amount of impurities in iron ore has been slowly increasing. Some of these impurities have been found to have deleterious impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. In the meantime, an increasing number of large blast furnaces with inner volumes of more than 5000 m3 have been built that require more sinter and are often more demanding in terms of the quality requirements of the ferrous materials. Finally, sinter plants are facing increasing pressure due to more stringent regulations regarding their environmental impact. This paper gives an overall review of a variety of technologies developed worldwide to tackle the changing raw material characteristics and mitigate emissions from sintering operations.CITATION:Lu, L and Ishiyama, O, 2015. During the last three years prospecting has been active in southeastern Manitoba and a number of interesting gold, nickel and copper deposits have been discovered within an area 90 miles north of the international boundary, and extending about 40 miles westerly from between mileage 60 and 110 on the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. As known at present, two-thirds of this area of 2,000 square miles is underlain by pre Cambrian granite and granite gneiss and is not likely to contain mineral deposits of economic importance. The remaining one-third is underlain by metamorphosed sediments and lavas (greenstones), penetrated by the granite and granite gneiss and, at various localities, cut by bosses, sills, or dykes of gabbro, diorite, granodiorite, and other types of intrusives. The nickel, copper, and gold mineralization accompanied or followed the intrusion of these different rock types. The gold deposits are limited in distribution, so far as known, to the northern part of this prospecting area and occur along Manigotagan and Wanipigow rivers. These deposits have recently been described in some detail, (3) and therefore only the copper and copper-nickel deposits of the southern part of this area, along Oiseau and Maskwa rivers, will be described in this paper.

"A research program on modelling cement grinding circuits has been in operation at Hacettepe University, Ankara, for four years. It has concentrated so far on tube mill and air separator grinding circuits for cement clinker, with emphasis on plant sampling surveys, including axial sampling inside the tube mills. The data used for model development have come from 33 surveys in 9 plants.The operating conditions have been:- mill sizes - 3.2 to 4.8 metres diameter and 8.5 to 15 metres long,- mill feed rates - 46 to 158 tonnes per hour,- air flow through mills - 25000 to 125000 cubic metres per hour,- cement clinker work indexes - 10.3 to 18,- separator sizes - 2. to 3.1 metres diameter,- separator feed rates - 132 to 689 tonnes per hour,- separator speeds - 12.3 to 21 metres per second.The ball mill model is Whiten’s perfect mixing model and the separator model is the Tromp curve with a fish-hook. This paper emphasises the importance of calculating the breakage rates and the discharge functions with three case studies at five different circuits which were selected for discussion because they show how particular features of circuit operation can be included in the general models. Size distribution graphs are used to illustrate every aspect of the discussion"

Much of today’s gold is locked within sulphide minerals. These sulphide minerals, including pyrite, need to be subjected to oxidative pre-treatment in order to leach the refractory-gold using traditional methods. Typically autoclaves employing high temperatures between 180?225 ºC, and extremely high pressures between 1,500?3,200 kPa, are used for the oxidative pre-treatment. However, the autoclaves themselves are very expensive, costly to operate and maintain, and produce excess sulphuric acid. This paper studies the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite in ferric sulphate solutions. In general, pyrite oxidation under atmospheric pressure can result in high elemental sulphur production, i.e. less acid generation. Activated carbon has displayed an ability to catalyze the process, achieving reasonable kinetics. The reaction kinetics were investigated by altering acidity of the leaching solution, temperature, catalyst ratio, sparged oxygen and agitation. A combination of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) were used to monitor the kinetics of the process and elemental sulphur yield. The purpose of this investigation was to determine optimal operating conditions that maximized kinetics of the atmospheric oxidation while maximizing elemental sulphur yield.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for mine planners and engineers to evaluate on a conceptual basis if a shaft or a ramp is most suited for their particular underground access requirements. Mine planners and engineers are often raced with the decision of choosing which method of underground access is best suited for their particular requirement. Underground access can be provided by a shaft, ramp, adit, or slope for either exploration and/or actual production operations. This paper will focus on the construction cost and schedule differences between sinking a shaft and excavating a ramp which are currently the most typical access alternatives used in the western United States. It would be wrong to state that one method is superior to the other in every case. There are many variables to be addressed, and the degree of sensitivity of each of them will eventually dictate which method is the most suited to the particular circumstances. This paper compares the construction cost and schedule or sinking a shaft to excavating a ramp at different depths given different ground and hydrological conditions. This comparison provides mine planners with "rules or thumb" that may be applied to the access selection process.

In this paper we describe the synthesis of a new homologous series of linear Polyglycol-based frothers that consist of Ethylene Oxide (EO) and hydroxyl as hydrophilic groups and Propylene Oxide (PO) and alkyl chains as hydrophobic groups. The synthesized frothers were of two types: Alkyl-Ethoxy-Propoxylate (abbrev. CnEOlPOm) and Alkyl-Propoxy-Ethoxylate (CnPOmEOl) giving: (a) different number of groups and chain length, and (b) different locations of the groups. The identities were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. The characterization of the products was carried out in a bubble column. At steady state, bubble size, gas holdup and water overflow rate were measured as a function of frother concentration. The results indicate that increasing number of PO groups led to significant decrease in bubble size, and increase in gas holdup and water overflow rate. Increasing the alkyl chain length, gave similar but less pronounced trends. There was no impact of increasing the number of EO groups on bubble size but there was an in increase in gas holdup and water overflow rate. Changing the location of the PO and EO group had a significant effect on all three parameters.

Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use. Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

ONE hundred miles from Vancouver, at an elevation of 4,000 feet, is the Pioneer mine. It is situated on Cadwallader creek, a tributary of Bridge river, and is reached by travelling from Vancouver to Squamish by boat, a distance of thirty-two miles, from there by train to Bridge River (one hundred and seven miles), and finally by automobile across Mission mountain .(7,000 ft. elevation) to the mine (fifty-six miles): a total distance of one hundred and ninety-five miles. Prior to 1924, many Companies had examined the Pioneer, which had been developed by shaft to a depth of 200 feet, but, while values were good, the small size of the ore-shoot discouraged large investors. In July, of that year, opera-tions were re-commenced by the late David Sloan and, on sinking further, the ore-shoot was found to lengthen greatly as well as to ex-tend in depth, while remarkable gold values also were encountered. When, later, the price of gold rose from $20 to $35 per ounce, the mine was in an excellent position to take full advantage of the increase + and not only became an extremely profitable enterprise itself but its success greatly stimulated the search for and development of other 1-gold properties in British Columbia.

Gas handling at Magma Copper Company&apos;s, San Manuel smelter receives process gas from a flash smelting furnace and four copper converters. The major gas handling equipment consists of four electrostatic precipitators and a sulfuric acid plant. Process vessels in gas handling are typically confined spaces. Lethal gases., mechanical and chemical hazards, and the difficulty of rescue, should an accident occur, makes this area a must in the safety plan. The presence of hazardous chemicals and explosive gases in process vessels and piping are of major concern when repairs are required. Proper job procedures are critical to prevent injury during repairs. This includes plant employees and contractors who are likely to be unfamiliar with the hazards involved. The safe operation of a gas handling operation must include the functions of operations employees on a daily basis. This includes a safe working environment and involvement. of all employees in the safety program. If an injury does occur quick medical response is critical to prevent serious injury. Medical responders must be adeqliately trained and prepared to treat the injured person without becoming victims themselves.. The methods used at Magma copper Company to deal with these safety problems are the focus of this presentation.
